Wood Engraving Wednesday
ANDY ENGLISH
This print by English wood engraver Andy English (b. 1956), entitled Garden Plants for Bees, is reproduced in the catalog for the Fourth Triennial Exhibition 2020-2022 of the American American wood engravers society, the Wood Engravers’ Network (WEN), juried by my Wisconsin colleagues Tracy Honn and Jim Moran.
The original print, measuring 165 x 85mm (6.5" x 3.5") in an edition of 75 copies, is printed from three separate hand-engraved woodblocks: two seasonal collections of plants crowned by a small engraving of a bee. Besides its selection for the WEN Triennial, the print also won the illustration prize in the 2018-19 Society of Wood Engravers touring exhibition. The venerable Society of Wood Engravers is the British counterpart to the American Wood Engravers' Network, and Andy English is a member of both societies.
Trained as a geologist, English is a self-taught wood engraver, beginning the practice in 1991. The Wikipedia article on English cites an observation by British journalist Paul Wheatley that English came to wood engraving "for the first time and found it to be so natural and comfortable that he could only describe it as remembering a process rather than learning it." The print shown here is available for purchase on English's website for £75.00.
Also on English's website is a lovely series of images showing the development of a wood engraving, which we reproduce below, along with a photographic portrait of the artist:

As the juror for WEN's Fifth Triennial, I look forward to reviewing many fine wood engravings, and hopefully there will be a few by Andy English in the mix as well.

Seeds Purchased from Stonecrop Gardens, NY
One of the biggest benefits of membership at Stonecrop is access to their amazing seed bank. Members can purchase rare seeds for $1 a pack. These are plants that are sometimes extremely difficult to find at nurseries and that work perfectly for my area. Here is a list of what I purchased from them...some I've already begun.
The seed collection got suddenly a lot more interesting.

Anemone virginiana. Interesting thing about this plant is that for years I've pulled it thinking it was a weed. On the years that I forgot to pull it, I was like, man that is pretty! So I now leave it alone. It's drought tolerant and the flowers are loved by pollinators. I'll be planting some more from seed as well.

My Favorite Seed Sources
The holidays have past and gardeners mull over the coming garden season. Seed catalogs have arrived and the email inbox has regular enticements to prompt an order. Reviewing the offerings is a favorite winter activity, especially if you live where planting the garden doesn’t commence until spring.
Here’s a list of the seed companies I’ve come to depend on. If you have a favorite I should know about, add it in a comment, including why you like it.
You can find this list on my RESOURCES page along with my Favorite Garden Books and Knowledge Bases for Gardeners.
Mother Earth News Seed and Plant Finder lets you quickly search the online catalogs of more than 500 mail order seed companies. Especially useful for unusual varieties. Johnny’s Selected Seeds has an incredible variety of seeds and an extensive Grower’s Library I consult frequently. Renee’s Garden offers a wide selection of heirloom and gourmet vegetable, flower and herb seeds. Some of their seeds I’ve planted for decades. Frequent new introductions and lovely seed packets with artist drawings and useful info. San Diego Seed Company Brijette, urban farmer and seed purveyor produces and curates organic, heirloom vegetable, herb and flower seeds regionally adapted for Southern California. Check her Instagram feed too. Territorial Seeds often has seeds I want that are out-of-stock at other companies. The seed quality and germination rates have been excellent. Seeds from Italy is the U.S. distributor for Franchi Seeds, Italy's oldest family-owned seed company, founded in 1783. Many of their heirloom varieties are untreated, most are open-pollinated, and many are certified organic. Seed count is very generous and packets reasonably priced. Fedco Seeds is a no nonsense seed company in Maine with many organic, open-pollinated and unusual varieties. Seed packets and website are ordinary but have everything you need to know. Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds carries the largest selection of heirloom seeds and one of the largest selections of seeds from the 19th century; hence their website rareseeds.com Botanical Interests is another reliable seed source with gorgeous art and helpful information on their seed packets. Often available in garden centers.

December 2022: The Next to The Last Day
The freezing temperatures ended around the 28th of December. Now, we are back in the 60s... and it’s raining. We aren’t predicted to see winter temperatures again until next Wednesday. So far, the first plant to show signs of recovering from the freeze is our cilantro:
