I need to think more on this :(
I am so glad my church group doesn’t meet over the summer bc it gives me some time to reflect with separation.
Bc I haven’t been meeting with them every week I can think of it’s the way I truly want to live my life
like the way I viewed myself got worse so idk
For a course I’m taking we had to do an autobiography type reflection and the only reason I could be honest is bc it is going to be anonymously graded
like being part of the church group in s way embarrasses me
but also Idk If I can just stop attending it come fall
like Im glad it’s not happening in the summer so that maybe this gives me a chance not to go back in fall
don’t get me wrong I’m still Catholic and will still attend the church and probably in fall I’ll attend even more church stuff
but i don’t think I want to make the commitment that I signed anymore
it makes me sad
and when talking to my mom she said something that made me think Wow maybe I should reconsider
i hate myself so much
that has to be the only reason
looking through my tumblr archive I said that I didn’t want to make myself hate me anymore and I think I messed up
I’ve made so many great memories and experiences with the church group and those people are everything they are so kind and genuine and I feel so connected to them
but some of the things they said had my heart BREAKING for them
and i realize it’s also like me I’m just like them
I don’t want to deny myself for the rest of my life but then I think why not just for a few more years
going back to what my mom said
She said “remember the rules of the church are the rules of man” and she said that specifically about my context
i mean my context adjacent but it struck me so hard it felt like a slap
The church group is such a meaningful place of people with shared identity and experience as me like talking with them They Get It
but i think maybe i should just decide to be far too busy come fall semester
i don’t want to leave the slack message because I don’t want the leader of the ministry to reach out and then I’d have to answer
and i don’t know what id say
If I would lie and say that I can’t fit it in my schedule (I would have to confess to that lie in reconciliation)
or if I would say the truth that I don’t know if I agree with the ministry anymore
and I’d feel so judged
even if I wasn’t judged I know that they would think of me a certain way
and Im not going to leave the church so there is not much I can do about it
i had thought about maybe leaving ti join the other Catholic Church in my city but that’s actually a decent drive away
The last time I went to confession had me feeling awful
It was so bad
and i don’t know how I feel about the ministry
i don’t know what to do
i wish I could talk to someone about it but I can’t I truly cant
i can’t talk to the people in the ministry because I don’t want them to know that I’m doubting this hard if I don’t leave and if I do I want it to be a clean break
they know my doubts that’s part of the ministry but not to this extent
and i can’t talk to the people in my life about it because they either don’t know I’m gay or don’t know that I go to that ministry
my friends know I’m religious but I know they would look at me So Incredibly Differently if they knew that the ministry I was going to every week is a sexuality and gender ministry. km embarrassed by it even though I thought it was what I needed to be closer with God
i went there after I was hurting: my return to church was largely inspired by the anniversary of an awful time
i have so many complex thoughts that I need to go theough
i think it would be best for me to leave the ministry and just attend more regular church stuff
i just hate the idea of the members knowing that I was in it and left
ahhhh
i need to reflect on this more I’m struggling so much
Im in part thinking of this so much because I am seeing them in person again this week for something unrelated to the ministry and it leaves me to wonder if they would halt their friendship with me if I stopped going
like technically since membership is like secret and I haven’t met them at other church events it’s like we have never met so idk idk idk
i want guidance
and Im not talking divine guidance I just want someone to talk to me and be like friend what are you doing
because i don’t know what I’m doing

Hi! May I ask for both sfw and nsfw alphabet with Syo and Ai?
Hey babes! Yes you can. I'm starting with syo and the SFW alphabet and then working my way up from there so be on the lookout!
SYO KURUSU SFW ALPHABET
Argument: Do they argue? How bad does it get?
Tries so hard not to but sometimes he gives passive aggressive comments that you pick up on and then it escalates from there. Never lets it get out of control though because he feels so guilty the minute the argument starts.
Babies: fur baby, scaly baby, or no baby?
Definitely wants a fur baby. A smaller dog would be perfect and he thinks it would be a great addition to the family.
Cocktails: are they extroverted? Introverted? Both? With their s/o?
LOLOLOL hes extroverted we all know that. Loves to make friends and has no problem doing so. Is the same with his s/o.
Dance: would they encourage their s/o to join the industry? How would they take it if they did?
On one hand he would love it if you joined the industry! On the other hand he knows the industry and how busy it gets and he's scared that you won't have much time for the relationship anymore.
Exit: Do they like to travel? Where would they want to go?
Definitely likes to travel! He wants to show his s/o his hometown in France and definitely wants to be a little more extravagant and check out bora bora.
Food: what's their favorite date with their s/o?
Shopping. It's two of his favorite things combined; his s/o and spending money. Also spending money on his s/o!.
Grease: what's something special they made for their s/o?
It's not that he made it but he put the design in. He got you guys matching raspberry fedoras with sunflowers on the side.
Honesty: would they ever hide something from their s/o?
The wedding ring LOLOLOL no on a real level hes very open with his s/o and the only thing he'd hide is a surprise for his person.
Independence: what type of lover are they? Clingy or carefree?
He's more carefree. He cant really handle the type of person that clings to him for life 24/7 and encourages his s/o to still have a life outside of the relationship.
Jealous: are they a jealous person?
Oh yes. Definitely. Hes scared that you would find someone better or you get sick of him and his busy schedule so he gets mad at any potential suitor that has their eyes on you.
Kindness: how far would they go for their s/o? Ride or die kind of thing?
Definitely a ride or die kind of relationship. He would commit crimes for his lover if it meant they were happy.
Love: what's their love type?
Words of affirmation is definitely his way to go. He always makes sure that you know how good he thinks you look and that youre the most beautiful person, inside and out, on this planet.
Mouth: where's their favorite place to kiss?
Your forehead! It makes him feel like your protector and like he's the king of the world with his queen/king at his side.
No: anything they wouldnt do with or for their s/o?
He would try to keep them out of the public eye. The paparazzi get crazy and he knows it and he just doesnt want you to get in the middle of that.
Odor: what's their favorite scent? On a s/o?
Oh oh oh rose scent on his lover! He just loves the sweetness of it and it reminds him of spring :)
PDA: how open are they to PDA
I mean he won't make out with you in public but he definitely likes to hold your hand and give little pecks. So relatively open.
Questions: will they be an open book or not?
Yes. To him, a partnership is with someone you can trust and that's definitely who you are to him.
Reserved: what's something that only his s/o would know about?
His heart disease. He doesnt like worrying his friends but it does come up in their conversations and he knows that his s/o wont betray his trust by telling everyone.
Serious: how long until they start to get really serious with their s/o?
Is serious right from the start. He doesnt like to play games and is in it for the long run 100%.
Type: what's their type in a s/o ?
Definitely someone who can keep up with him. He's very active and friendly and loves to be moving around. Someone who kind of compliments that would be preferred.
Untouched: have they been in a relationship before? How many?
Had little crushes but was never in a super serious relationship. Definitely a first for him
Very: what's something they're really good at outside of music?
Athletics! Sports are his life outside of music and he's good at pretty much everything.
Weird: what's something odd or weird about them?
As much as he denies it, Natsuki has proof that this is true; he has a little plush from when he was a kid that he still sleeps with because he feels safe with it.
Xylophone: their favorite part about you? Physically? Mentally?
Physically its your smile. He loves how brightly it shines and it always sets his heart on fire. Mentally its your determination. You set your heart on something and you get it done.
Yearning: would they like a family? How many kids?
Definitely would like a family some day. A traditional, two kids and a dog kind of family ya know? Also would like those kids to be twins but that's kind of not up to him lol
Zebra: Do they change throughout their relationship? Are they truly themselves?
Hes in it from the minute the relationship starts but he does have a few topics that he doesnt like to discuss at first so, he's relatively himself with a few secrets.

Boyfriend!Hyunjin
A/N: SHE PROTECC
SHE ATTACC
BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY
SHE BACC
HI GUYS!!! I’m so happy to be posting again i cry :,)  i hope you enjoy!!!! i;ll be updating as much as i can without rushing too much :D
MASTERLIST
Prepare your wigs peeps
This is gonna make me swerve
I mean
cmon it’s Hyunjin
Let’s do this!
Tumblr media
Prince Hyunjin
Is actually smooth af with his crush
He'll complement you whenever he gets the chance
Or gives you food
Basically your knight in shining armor
Ye, that’s not what actually happens
He's smiling like an idiot and about collapse when he’s with you because HE'S FREAKING OUT OK
So freaking nervous his heartbeat is always up when he’s with you
You sometimes think he’s about to have a heart attack and you’re not stupid you know why lmao
Same for when he confesses
At first he’s pretty calm about it
Just casually asked if you wanted to see a movie with him some time
“Like... a-as more than friends?”
You'd kinda expected it so you weren't too shocked when he asked you
So you said yes
Duh
And he does a double take
"Wait.... Are you serious? You want to?"
"Well yeah?"
"WHAT WHY"
Was good with flirting but didn't actually think you'd go out with him smh
Now every minute he just contemplates the fact that he has you
Tumblr media
And he still can't believe it
Like shit dude
He’s with the y/n
You never feel unloved when you're with him
He loves going for long walks, just to talk and relax
Why does it sound like he's a dog here lmao
Will always take as many pictures of you as his phone storage will allow, his camera roll is stuffed with pics of you
Will insist on going to the park for a picnic, he just loves you and the sunshine
He loves to quietly slide your hand into his
But he always ends up giggling because he’s so giddy about being with you
Has to take a moment to charge up his courage before giving you a quick kiss on the cheek
He then goes an unreal shade of scarlet as he covers his face, muttering that he ‘can’t believe that he actually did it’!
It takes him a while to finally gather up the courage to properly kiss you
Like.... a very long time
You were starting to get worried that he didn’t actually like you
Maybe he was just too nervous to tell you that it wasn’t working for him
buT NOPE
On one certain date, Hyunjin had prepared a cute little dinner on the practice room floor
He was so apologetic about the poor setting, but finally had stopped saying sorry when you’d told him for the 2376129th time that you were having fun
At some point, he just went uber silent, watching you not in a creepy way
You eventually noticed, and just stared back
“What?”
He didn’t say anything, but his eyes did widen a wee bit
“What are you lookin at, you’re sorta scaring m-”
He cut you off and just kissed you
BOI YOU WERE SO SHOCKED
Afterwards you both just stared at each other
And then Hyunjin goes all red
“I’m sorry I didn’t mean to do that I’m sorry that was stupid you can slap me if you want!!!!”
“Bruh why would I want to slap you?!”
“You don’t hate me?”
facepalms for days
Tumblr media
You meet the other boys only a few minutes later
Go figure
You’re talking casually, the embarrassment from the kiss wearing off
They all come stampeding into the practice room making an ungodly racket
And all go quiet when they realize what they’ve done
Changbin, bless him, tries to reduce the awful level of awkwardness: “*cough* uh hey, Hyunjin.... This must be y/n right?” He waves at you. “We’ve heard a lot about you, Hyunjin never stops talking about you”
He misses the death glare Hyunjin shoots him
Then Jisung
Freakin Jisung, man
Waltzes up: “Hyunjin’s cheeks are really pink”. He gives a cheeky smile. “You didn’t kiss did you?”
The room goes as quiet as a tomb
“OH SHIT YOU DIDN’T ACTUALLY KISS DID YOU????”
Of course Hyunjin completely loses his shit at the sight of you turning a deep red. “GODDAMMIT JISUNG STFU”
Ye your first meeting with SKZ wasn’t the best
But you all bonded rather quickly after
And Jisung buys you little snacks sometimes as an apology for your first awkward meeting
Tumblr media
OH GOD THE BOYS ADORE YOU
If you’re ever sick, they always get snacks for Hyunjin to give you
And if you’re really under the weather, they’ll cover for Hyunjin so that he can stay with you and take care of you.
He wraps you in blankets
YOU ARE NOW A BURRITO
And tries to make soup for you
We know what cooking!Hyunjin leads to
You’re chilling on the couch and you suddenly hear a high-pitched scream
You’re up and sprinting to the kitchen at the speed of light still wrapped in a burrito
To find him fanning at a smoking pot
“WHAT THE FUCK HYUNJIN YOU JUST NEED TO HEAT IT UP HOW DID YOU START A MINI FIRE?”
You’re home doesn’t burn down thank goodness
And you end up heating some soup for yourself while Hyunjin watches
And it’s! hilarious! when he’s sick!
He becomes a little ten-year-old istg
But in a really cute way
He doesn’t ask for anything: food, to watch TV etc
Nah he just wants cuddles
The whole damn day
So while you’re struggling to keep a mask on and not getting sneezed on, this idiot is smiling like a puppy if puppies could smile, clinging onto you like a love-filled leach did that sound weird? i think that sounded really weird
Tumblr media
i want this tattooed on my face thx
Now idk what this dude is afraid of
Something tells me one big fear would be to lose Stray Kids and the people he loves
And so I think he’d get kinda nervous when you both see less of each other and when he gets busier
You can’t talk as much because of his crazy schedule and with lack of sleep, he starts getting more irritated easier during the little intervals of time you get to see each other
At some point he might snap at you, maybe for no reason at all, and you’ll snap back indignantly
Yeah you love him but you’re not taking any attitude
If things get really bad, he just shakes his head, saying he needs some air
You’ll both give yourselves some space, but eventually Hyunjin becomes terrified that you’re too angry with him to talk again
So he goes to find you and talk
You both hug it out and decide to spent the rest of the day together for more quality time
And it’s totally worth Hyunjin getting an earful from Chan the next day
OK back to fluff quickly quickly
Tumblr media
On the days Hyunjin goes somewhere, you sometimes join him in the car ride, tho you’re always super careful to never show your face when he gets out
Gotta stay hidden yknow?
You’ll both send cute little texts throughout the day and OOF just couple goals
You: hey check this out, this is me 2 u *sends heart meme*
Jiiniie<3: oh yeah? well this is me @ u! *sends heart meme with more hearts*
You: boi dont start smth u cant win!
And thus begins the heart meme wars
r they even called heart memes idk
Tumblr media
i want this tattooed on my face pt2
We’ve already established that Hyunjin can’t cook for love or money
So if he even steps foot in the dorms’ kitchen
You bet that at least two other of his hyungs will follow for pure supervision
And he is not, under any circumstances, allowed to cook something by himself
And you’re grateful that your safety and world peace had been assured by this rule
Although, you’re allowed to cook together as long as you watch what he’s doing
If anything at all goes wrong, the blame is pinned on you
So it’s natural for you to treat these cooking projects as once-in-a-while occasions
Tumblr media
Now when you ask about meeting his parents
Holy Hell
Stutters, clammy hands, flitting eyes, you name it
Hyunjin is so frickin nervous about you meeting his parents oof
You don’t understand why, like hey, how bad could it be right?
But pretty soon you get why Jinnie was nervous
His parents aren’t that trusting within the first hour of knowing you
You guess it might be because of poor past experiences?
Maybe Hyunjin had been judged or dated once too many times just for his looks?
The thought is enough to make you swear by all you know to always treat him like a treasure
You also make a mental note to ask him sometime
Eventually, his parents realize you have pure intentions and they become so much kinder and warmer
They let you know how welcome you are to visit whenever you want, they offer to send you off with some homemade cookies...
And Hyunjin gets so emotional at the beautiful site in front of him that he bursts into tears
Which causes you and his parents to tease and hug him
if you’re thick, let’s just be clear that im making a statement on how you should NOT judge Jinnie purely because he’s good looking, appreciate his talent!
Tumblr media
Now, Hyunjin is kinda tall compared to the rest of SKZ hah im joking of course so it’s pure instinct to want to steal his shirts
Don’t lie, if you had the chance, you would take something i see right thru u
And at some point in your life, you stop realizing ‘hey, this isn’t my jumper!’ and just walk around in clothes that aren’t yours
And when this happens, three things follow:
You see a wild Hyunjin crashing through the apartment towards you, yelling happily that ‘that’s my favorite hoodie!!’ he tries to act like he’s angry and fails in 0.0000003 sec
He doesn’t slow down and freakin slams into you at full velocity, knocking you over or off anything you might be sitting on
He proceeds to tickle you mercilessly, until you either can’t breath and turn purple or until you commit an extreme act of violence in the name of self defense
Once this chaotic episode ends, most of the time with both of you are completely knackered and just lying on the floor
You both cool off by just cuddling and watching something on TV
Or reading something together!!!
I can totally see Hyunjin shoving one of his fav books in your face and insisting that you both take turns in reading aloud to each other
And you both react at the same time to shockers in the book, like you start crying together when a character dies who hasn’t had that traumatic experience or you both squeal with joy and hug each other tighter when something great happens
Did I just turn into a puddle of happy goo?
Yes I fuckin did.
Tumblr media
I think Hyunjin wouldn’t take that long to tell you that he loves you
That doesn’t mean that he planned anything tho
HAH! Course he didn’t
Probs says it when he can barely think straight
Maybe you’re watching him dance late at night
You’d brought snacks to keep him going ‘cause he was working his ass off
And there you sit, marveling at his skill and fluidity while executing his choreo
You have a talent for hyping Hyunjin up while he dances, cheering when he leaps high into the air, gasping when he performs a complicated move, and aw-ing and his graceful poses ok im done now
When he finishes one of his more dramatic dances, you jump up with glee and tackle him in a hug despite him being sweaty, saying how proud you are
He hugs you back happily and says:
“I should be the proud one, having someone I love so much being so supportive of me”.
You both freeze, still hugging each other
And neither of you move or breathe for a moment
“What did you say?”
“UhhhHHHH NOTHING I SAID NOTHING”
“You said that you love me!”
“WAT NO I DIDN’T I-”
“HYUNJIN I LOVE YOU TOO!!!!”
“N- wait what?”
“I love you, dumbass” same tho
Oof that poor practice room has seen a lot of awkwardness
Tumblr media
I’m cracking up just by thinking of how hopeless Hyunjin could become when SKZ are away
“Hey do you guys have a signal and/or data? I wanna Skype y/n and show them the beautiful view”.
*all of SKZ facepalms*
Always taking pictures to show you
In the evenings, you get a frickin cascade of notifications of both photos and messages from the poor boy telling you he misses you like crazy
When Skyping, he asks to see Khami, who you have the pleasure of caring for during his absence
You do question (mentally and then verbally) whether he calls to talk to you or his dog
He never answers the question heh
There’s lowkey a competition between you and Khami for Hyunjin’s affection
When the boys make their flight home, Hyunjin keeps you informed about everything that’s happening
I mean everything:
Jiiniie<3: we’re @ the airport :D     -6h ago
Jiiniie<3: waiting to board!     -5h ago
Jiiniie<3: they’re getting ready to go, i can’t wait to see you!! xxx      -5h ago
Jiiniie<3: will text you when we arrive, love!     -5h ago
Jiiniie<3: JUST LANDED! CANT WAIT TO HUG U     -31mins ago
Jiiniie<3: about to get our luggage!     -Just now
You get the point -_-
When you finally see each other, he runs at top speed to pick you up and spins you around
frickin goals man i feel so sad writing this :,)
Tumblr media
He goes public in probably the most aesthetic way that’s physically possible
He posts a bunch of gorgeous photos-
Courtesy of Jisung
-of your silhouettes in front of sunsets
-Pics he took of you laughing during a cafe trip
-Bomb-ass selcas where you’re both lookin hella fine
Just
UGGHHH
SO! AESTHETIC!!!
Naturally, the internet freaks the fuck out
Both of you are kinda nervous about the explosive reaction
There are salty bitches who are telling you to piss off because they jelly
But the huge majority of Stay are crying with happiness and wishing you both well
this better happen in the future im watching all of u
And soon Hyunjin is talking about you on vLives, proud af because y/n freakin rules!
OhmyGod I love Hyunjin
Tumblr media
Damn my heart be like < HYUNJIN 3 phew

Immediately after the meeting ended, you slipped out of the conference room and headed toward the front to check in with Max. There was no need for another disruption to your day and at this point, avoiding him was the foremost thought in your mind.
Nat looped her arm through yours as you rounded the last turn into the lobby. “How is this the first time I’m seeing you in like… a month or something?”
“Hello to you too Natty” you chuckled, finding a seat on one of the many sofas lining the walls. “Wanna accompany me to my next appointment? I’m just waiting for Max to pull the car around” you wiggled your eyebrows prompting the return of your chuckle and pulling one out of Nat.
“Sergeant Barnes? Oh… you mean Bucky” The short brunette at security caught the attention of both you and Nat with her remark as you both turned your head toward the comment, almost in sync. “Yeah, no it's ok, he’ll know who it is!”
“No, Ma’m, I need your name for security clearance”
The woman gently smacked her forehead,”oh yeah! Duh! Camila Monroe!” Nat and I both made eye contact before returning to our suspicious stare-down of the intruder. “Bucky!” She threw her arms in the air and a shriek filled the open chamber that was the lobby as she jumped into the arms of a very unsuspecting Bucky.
He caught her just in time and his large arms embraced the girl, “Camila?”
“Yeah silly goose! I wanted to surprise you!” she exclaimed, placing a steamy kiss on his lips. Knowing his hatred of PDA, your jaw to drop slightly at the length of their little interaction. Steve interrupted the two, clearing his throat and beginning the introduction process.
Nat pulled your shoulder closer to you and whispered into your ear, “who the fuck is Camilla?”
“Beats me nat…”  you sighed, excusing yourself and making a beeline for the exit, hiding your escape under the distraction that called herself Camilla. You  reminded yourself that you only needed to endure this for the week before you were back to your tiny apartment in the city. The kiss played in your mind like an excruciating highlight reel making your nail appointment feel years long. Despite your heart crumbling, you were never one to let down appearances so you sat through your nail fill with a dull smile on your face the entire time. Determined to hide out the rest of the day in your room, you left your nail tech an extra $200 tip for her silence and access to the back door. Your nail appointment ended about 20 minutes early so you could at least get a head start. Your tight dress clung to the brick wall of the salon as you ordered an Uber under the alias Nat had helped you create when you first got to know her. After it dropped you off at the compound, you used the west wing exit and snuck through the training compound, eventually ending on Nat’s balcony, directly next to yours. Your legs pushed off the edge of her balcony and came down rather gracefully on the landing of your concrete terrace. Pulling your phone from your pocket, you texted tony.
Y/N: Look tony, I need a break. This schedule I was given... It’s not happening today so call off your goons. If I see another one today, I will cause more damage than Steve his first night on Asgardian Liquor
Desperate for some reprieve from the day, you resorted to the books that lined your walls. Re-reads mostly but you never really minded that. By the time it reached midnight, you figured it was safe to exit and grab a snack. Gently opening the door, your bare feet pattered into the kitchen. Opening the freezer, you reached for your secret stash of ice cream only to realize it was completely gone. To be fair, it probably would have been gross after sitting in there for over a year. Opening the fridge, you were only met with further disappointment and it had never been more clear you lived with superheros. Green vegetables and other health conscious foods lined the shelves. It wasn't like you could cry over your ex while eating a head of freakin’ lettuce. You let out a groan and closed the door, abandoning your mission to find anything sweet in the kitchen and settling for a cup of water to take back to your room.
The next morning came and you awoke groggy from the lack of sleep to the loud knock that pounded on your door.
“Miss.Y/N, do you know what time it is?!” Max exclaimed, a panicked look holding claim to his face.
Your arm lazily came up to shield your eyes from the bright lights of the hallway as you quipped back, “No, Mr. Max, I do not know what time it is,”
“It's nearly 1! The banquet starts in 4 hours and you haven't even started getting ready! I’ve never seen you oversleep like this!”
You quietly groaned as 12 or so people invaded your room holding makeup, dresses, shoes, and hair supplies. “You’ll have to forgive me max, it's been a rough weekend,” you grumbled under your breath.
Almost instantly, you were swept away and worked on vigorously until almost 5pm on the dot. Your was makeup done to absolute perfection and your hair matched in both flawlessness and elegance. The yellow dress fit you a little too snuggly for your liking but its beautiful floral designs captivated your senses, distracting you from the corset that sucked the wind from your lungs. Yellow pumps adorned your feet with matching polish on each toe. You looked put together, key word being looked.
Insisting on escorting yourself to the ballroom, you snuck in the back door attempting to blend in with your surroundings. This plan was foiled almost instantly.
“Damn girl! You look good!” Sam exclaimed, gathering the attention of those around him. Heads swung around toward you and suddenly you were battling the compliments of Nat, Steve, Bruce, and Tony. Wanda was quick to grab your arm and pull you away, saving you momentarily.
“Where are you taking me?”
You laughed, as her plan became more clear. She plopped you down at the open bar and took her seat next to you. Swinging around to the handsome barkeep she gathered his attention, “Can we get some shots please and thank you!”
“Wanda, you know I don’t do shots.”
This time it was Steve's voice that caught your attention and rang over the noise “Bucky!!! Nice for you to join us!”
You peered over your shoulder to see him clad in a fitting suit and tie sporting the brunette, who was practically glued to him, on his side. Her perfectly curled hair hung over her bare shoulders, leading to a dress that must have been designed by the gods themselves. She looked stunning and her smile was far brighter than yours.
“I’ll take a fucking shot” you groaned.
“’Atta girl” Wanda complimented. After a shot or two, Vision grabbed Wanda to introduce her with some important head of the company or CEO or something, leaving you to the mercy of strangers who bought you drink after drink, pitying you and the downward spiral that was quickly engulfing you.
This vicious cycle was only broken when a familiar voice sounded from behind you, “Can I have whatever whiskey you are serving, please?”
Your head slouched in your hand and you had a childish mope on your face as you struggled to place the voice and control yourself long enough to leave on the high barstool that you found yourself stuck on.
“Y/N?”
Sliding off your chair slightly, you mumbled a quiet uh-huh.
“Are you here with someone?”
You sadly shook your head, taking another sip from your drink before the man grabbed the drink from your hand.
“Love, don’t drink that..”
His hand grasped your arm gently, steadying you and offering to walk you back to your room. All you could do was nod so he lightly lifted you from your chair and led to the elevator, only releasing you when he placed you on your bed and leaned down to take off your shoes. As your eyes met his for the first time, you sobered up slightly when you realized who had escorted you up to your room.
“Woah, W-woah, D-don’t touch me” you slurred, pushing Bucky back slightly with your foot.
“Y/N, please. You’re clearly not ok, let me he-”
You leaned down and pulled his hand off of you, crawling back toward the safety of your bed..
“Y-yeah Bucky! I’m not ok! I’m stuck in this s-stinking city at this dumb party with these d-dumb people all because I got dragged back to this stupid compound which made everything freakin hurt because as soon as I enter those fucking doors, I see the life we could have had if you loved me half as much as I loved you! But nooooo, Barnes couldn't commit! Couldn’t say he fucking loved me and instead opted to leave me, on my ass, and move to a different fucking country! Now I have to look your stupid face every day! So yeah, I’m not ok! Every time I look at your stupid face I cant fucking breathe because I love you so much that I hate you. And to top it off, you completely blindsided me with, the girl you have, uhh C-Camilla or whatever her name is, and she is by your side constantly. Then you come into the party and I cant even stay mad at you because you look so fucking good.” Your sudden confession brought tears to your eyes. You pulled off your other heel and stood in front of him, whispering,“Can you just tell me what she has that I didn't?”
His hand reached up to rub his neck as his line of sight stayed on the ground. “Y/N, it wasn't like that..”
You threw your arms in the air and rolled your eyes before crossing your arms.“Then what was it James? Cause I can't seem to piece it together”
“I-I don’t know Y/-”
“What was it?!” you screamed, the tears you previously held back now freely streaming down your face.
“It was easier to go! Ok?!” he yelled back, causing you to jump slightly. “It was easier for me to run from you! I loved you so much that I couldn't fucking take it! Camilla means nothing to me! I can play her game as long as I fucking want because I don’t care about the risk! I couldn't risk you breaking my heart because if you did I would have NEVER recovered fr-”
He was interrupted when you threw your arms around his neck and slammed your lips into his.

daisies
pairing: prince!jeno x gender neutral reader
genre: fluffy angst oh yes (plus lil commentaries hehe)
word count: 4.5k
summary: daisies symbolize true love – each daisy is really two flowers blended together in harmony, the center petals are one flower surrounded by the “rays” of another. they mean purity and innocence, one that swears a loyalty to love and a commitment to a shared secrecy.
a/n: thank you to jeno for being my biggest muse!! oh also thank you to payton for helping me research flowers for this <3
Tumblr media
·     royal prince!jeno can’t wait to rule his people and his beautiful kingdom full of flower fields and forests
·     but he can wait a little longer to get married
·     and one night the royal family throws a dinner party and a ball filled with suitors for their son
·     but jeno can’t take the stuffy atmosphere and the hundreds of girls trying to dance with him
·     so he runs off to his favorite spot in his kingdom
·     these rolling hills covered in daisies
·     it’s this pretty valley that nobody else knows about sometimes he goes there when his royal duties are too much and he needs to get away
·     but when he arrives he stumbles across you laying on the hill stargazing, engulfed in the flowers
·     he had no idea anyone else knew about this place
·     he really doesn’t wanna be around any more people tonight but in the dim moonlight he can make out the features of your face
·     he’s never seen you around the castle, and by what you’re wearing you definitely didn’t just run away from the same ball
·     so he carefully approaches and asks if he can join you
·     you sit up, freaked out that someone found this secret spot of yours
·     the figure is in a white button up and a dark blue suit jacket with gold swirls
·     he looks expensive but his eyes are kind
·     so you say okay
·     when he sits down next to you, he smells of many different expensive perfumes, which you find weird
·     you ask what he’s doing out here because by the looks of his dark suit he probably should be at some ball
·     and he says “yeah i should be.”
·     what?
·     and that’s when you notice the gold coronet resting neatly in his hair
·     ohhhhh he’s the prince
·     you’re sitting on the ground with the prince
·     the future king jeno
·     o k a y
·     suddenly jeno thinks he hears something and he’s paranoid of his parents’ royal guards finding him and this spot so he turns to you like did you hear that??
·     and before you could respond, out of nowhere he grabs you?? and dives into the flowers
·     your hands against his chest preventing you from smacking into him
·     he’s pulled you super close, his breathing rapid and eyes closed
·     you’re a little frozen, still in shock the prince just tackled you
·     he waits, realizing he probably just heard a squirrel or something
·     the ~kdrama~ moment happens where he opens his eyes and finds himself staring into yours
·     time stops for a split second, the wind ruffling the grass and daisies surrounding you two
·     and then he regains his composure and helps you up again
·     “are you okay? im so sorry! oh, that was so weird and creepy i just cant get caught out here.”
·     you blink slowly, the surprise wearing off
·     “yeah im totally fine.”
·     well maybe physically, but your heart?? about to beat out of your chest!!
·     jeno reaches his hand out and brushes a strand out of your face, smoothing out the rest of your disheveled hair
·     you swore fire ignited from his fingertips
·     you have to change the subject before you lose it
·     “so…you said you should be at a ball right now?” you clear your throat and brush yourself off
·     “ah, my family is pressing me to find a suitable partner. lately it’s just been dinner after dinner, dance after dance, i hate it.” he sighs, laying back into the hillside
·     “you hate people trying to get your attention?”
·     “i want to marry once i fall in love, not because they would be a good ruler of the kingdom.”
·     “i see.” you whisper, laying down beside him
·     “ i love my family, i love this kingdom and i can’t wait to rule but i wish that one part of my life could be normal. i tried to have the most normal childhood i could manage. i did everything i could to grow up and feel like everyone else, but nobody else has to have arranged marriages, so why do i?”
·     you stay quiet, soaking his words in, watching the moon as jeno continues to your right
·     “love seems incredible. i just wanna experience it for real. i don’t want someone ive only met a handful of times before our wedding, no matter how extravagant the whole thing is. i’ve tried so many times to explain to my parents that i can rule by myself for the time being and then ill find a partner, but they won’t let me.”
·     you listen to his worries, the whole time not realizing that your hand had made its way to rest on jeno’s arm
·     it’s something you do to comfort others, but he turns his head to look at you and you immediately pull away
·     you start apologizing, saying how it’s just a habit you have, but he stops you
·     “no no it’s okay, it feels nice to have someone really listening to me.” he smiles
·     oh his smile is beautiful, it shines brighter than the moon above
·     “i never get to hang out with other people my age and not have a bunch of royalty stuff looming over my head.”
·     you were just in awe that the prince who has it all is unhappy and you feel so bad and just wanna hug him because honestly he’s so cute
·     you listen while he rants about his duties and how stuck up some of the royal advisors are and how every suitor he meets is in it just for the wealth, they don’t really care about the him as a person
·     he asks what your take on it is and you talk about your views on love
·     you’re saying how you think it’s the most beautiful thing and that you’ve seen it in your parents and you want it so badly, but it always feels like all of the people in town don’t want a serious relationship
·     “i want to meet someone that makes every star look pale in comparison. i come out here to look at the night sky and hope that somewhere, the one i’m meant to be with is looking at it too.”
·     and jeno nods
·     he completely understands
·     “my family says i’m crazy for thinking that way. but i work in a library, im surrounded by incredible stories of romance, how can i not hope for one myself?”
·     he’s fascinated at the fact that you can date normally but don’t because you say there’s no one out there
·     jeno assures you there’s people out there, he has to meet with them constantly, he just never gets along with any of them
·     you talk about royal life into the late hours of the night
·     jeno is just so happy to have someone genuinely interested in his thoughts and feelings
·     he’s giddy, ranting about his plans for the kingdom and his goals for the future
·     you don’t know when you drift off, but you remember hearing his warm voice fade away
·     and you fall asleep on his shoulder
·     jeno doesn’t remember when he drifts off, but he remembers feeling your warmth at his side
·     when he wakes up at sunrise, jeno is like oh i‘m so dead they’re never gonna let me out of the castle ever again !!
·     but he looks at you, sleeping peacefully against him with daisies framing your face
·     he feels his heart do a backflip
·     is this how it’s supposed to feel? there’s not supposed to be a sense of dread pooling in his stomach like there is when a suitor walks in? interesting
·     gently waking you up, he tells you he has to run to get back to the castle
·     but he promises you he’ll do everything he can to come back to this spot to meet you and stargaze again
·     “i’ll be here.” you say sleepily, smiling at his messy hair
·     when he gets home his parents are like oh you are in so much trouble we threw that ball for you and you LEFT?? AND WE SEARCHED ALL OVER AND COULDNT FIND YOU?? WE THOUGHT YOU WERE KIDNAPPED??
·     and jeno is like um. oops? trying to contain his smile when he thinks of you and your soft hand on his arm
·     he gets read the riot act and is told if it happens again there will be serious consequences
·     and jeno never gets in trouble so this is big
·     but he’s willing to take the risk
·     for weeks he sneaks out and runs to the field each and every night
·     finding more reasons to love being in your company than there are stars in the sky
·     one night before dawn broke you stopped playing with the hem of your shirt
·     “i was thinking about what you told me the first night we met.” you say, eyes glued to the ground
·     “i know you’ll find somebody, and not just because you’re a prince. you will find someone who loves you for your heart, not just the riches.”
·     he stares at you, something in his eyes you couldn’t quite pin
·     jeno was glad it was dark, if not you would’ve seen the red dusting on his cheeks
·     “y-you’ll find someone too. i know it.”
·     its quiet for a minute and then very subtly, jeno grabs your hand
·     “is this okay?”
·     “of course it is. now can you tell me about the secret royal garden? i heard its incredible.”
·     you lay on your side and spend the rest of the night finding the stars in his eyes
·     another dinner is scheduled, this time with the family of a neighboring kingdom
·     this family has a daughter the same age as jeno
·     he knows in his gut that his parents want him to be with her
·     but he can’t shake the feeling of your hands in his
·     it’s where they belong
·     nevertheless, he fake smiles through the meal, tensing when she tries to reach for his arm across the table
·     after the disaster of a dinner, jeno sneaks away again
·     you can tell by the look on his face that he needs a hug
·     “i don’t want to be with her.” he breathes into your neck
·     “you’re sure you can’t talk to your parents about this?” you say, running your hand through his dark hair
·     “they don’t listen. i’ve tried, they just won’t listen.”
·     you hold him close, wracking your brain for a solution to this problem
·     but there seems to be none
·     jeno creeps back to the castle after spending the whole night wrapped in your arms
·     but the queen is waiting for him in his chamber when he opens the door
·     he’s banned from leaving the castle without supervision until he gets married
·     he’s never sent out unless it’s with a guard
·     he’s devastated and frustrated because he wants to sneak away to you but someone is always watching
·     he feels like he lost the one person who understood him the most
·     one day he goes into the castle library in an effort to get some peace
·     to his surprise, you are working in the front
·     you hear a gasp and when you look up jeno stands before you
·     “this library? you work in the castle and never told me!?”
·     “no, the town’s library is overstaffed because of the summer, so i took the job opening here. i always waited for you to come in and find out, but i guess you don’t use the library as much as i imagined.” you laugh
·     your heart is beating like crazy seeing him again
·     you bring him to your favorite little poetry corner, out of view of the entrance
·     huddled in amongst the books he takes hold of your hands
·     you can see him visibly relax when he feels your palms against his
·     “im so sorry, i tried so hard to go meet you but they have guards on me at all times. they won’t let me out of their sight.” he looks frantic
·     “jeno, i’ll wait however long it takes to be together. i still go to our spot every night, i still wait for you. i always will.” you reassure him
·     his brows unfurrow and he smiles, pulling you close to his chest
·     his heartbeat is soothing against your cheek and you realize just how much you missed him
·     “oh, i have something for you.” you reach into the last of the shelves, pulling out a thick worn book
·     he watches in confusion as you open to a page in the center
·     “here, i pressed these for you. for the nights when you can’t come visit, just know i’m there.” you show him two dry daisies, careful not to blow them away
·     his face lights up, gently taking the book from you and running a finger over their stems
·     he’s about to thank you when you hear someone call for him from the door
·     he frowns and shuts the book, tucking it under his arm
·     he presses a soft kiss to your forehead before scurrying off, leaving your skin burning and your mind dizzy
·     jeno’s parents are sure the princess from the neighboring kingdom is the one
·     and jeno can feel his stomach drop to his feet when they tell him
·     desperate to get to you, he tricks his guards into getting him something from the other side of the castle
·     he shimmies down his balcony and runs as fast as his legs can take him to the field before they can send search parties out for him
·     he grabs you by your shoulders and frantically tells you that they’re arranging his marriage
·     but it’s not what he wants, he can’t stop thinking about you
·     “jeno.” you whisper, pointing behind him
·     you see lanterns come over the hill and horses trample over the flowers
·     jeno stands in front of you to protect you but guards pull him away
·     he’s yelling at them to stop but they’re angry
·     you feel like you can’t breathe
·     one of the advisors recognizes you from the library and tells you never to come back to the castle
·     you stand and watch with teary eyes as jeno is dragged away and the candles fade into the night
·     a few weeks go by and you get word that the prince is betrothed to marry the princess and you’re absolutely heartbroken
·     you know jeno doesn’t want that
·     and even if it isn’t you that gets to be with him, you still want him to be happy
·     out of a job, you ask a family friend who works as a florist to hire you
·     “of course! we need all the help we can get for this wedding!”
·     oh no
·     your heart breaks even more but your family needs the money
·     you arrive a few days before to set up the decor and pray the the guards from that night don’t recognize you
·     and as much as it hurts, you hope you don’t run into jeno
·     but to your dismay he walks in with the princess and you feel your world collapse
·     you meet his gaze while they check on the ballroom’s set up and you can see the light behind his eyes go dim
·     suddenly he yells “NO! THIS IS ALL WRONG! WE NEED TO HAVE A MEETING TO DISCUSS THE DECOR IMMEDIATELY!”
·     he finds a way to break away from the princess just for a second and whispers to meet him at a different spot tonight
·     he says it’s under the willow tree at the edge of the forest by the stream and you nod
·     “the flower arrangements around the altar are hideous.” he goes back to frowning, trying his hardest not to steal glances at you anymore
·     you are sure there’s no way he could get away again but lo and behold you hear footsteps approaching
·     you run into jeno’s arms, worried this would be the last time you could ever hold him
·     he cups your cheeks, staring into your eyes
·     “we don’t have much time but i promise i’m not marrying her. we’ll figure something out, we’ll run away together, we’ll do something, but i promise i am not marrying her.”
·     he tries to assure you it’ll all be okay and he’s so certain it will be that you begin to believe him
·     but you hear footsteps again
·     lots of them
·     and you and jeno can hardly see because of the tears in both your eyes but you can hear the impending doom
·     there aren’t even words to say to each other, its over
·     it’s all over now
·     he kisses your forehead, then your cheek, letting his lips linger against your skin
·     jeno is ripped from your arms and both of you are taken back to the castle
·     they throw you in the dungeon and tell you that you’re going to have a meeting with the king and queen in the morning
·     you sit on the cold stone floor and cry into your palms, desperately trying to remember how jeno’s lips felt on your face
·     the next day you’re led out in shackles
·     you sit in front of the royals and the queen is furious
·     she’s yelling how dare you try and ruin her kingdom by getting in the way of her son’s relationship, how dare you still try and meet with him after everything that’s happened
·     she’s close to banishing you from the kingdom entirely when jeno runs in, “don’t you understand? im in love with them!”
·     jeno loves you
·     “would you rather the kingdom be run by a miserable king or a happy one?” he’s crying and you want nothing more than to wipe his tears away but the shackles keep you planted to the ground
·     you’re exhausted and cold and sad and hungry and you have no fight left in you
·     the queen can’t believe what she’s hearing
·     “you would put your future people in danger for this peasant?”
·     “i would rather give up the throne entirely than marry that princess.”
·     “how could you say that? i didn’t raise you this way! i raised you to be a selfless leader!”
·     “how could you expect me to lead these people well if im unhappy?”
·     she pauses momentarily, a softness seeping into her eyes, but it quickly fades when she looks back at you
·     the queen is still fuming
·     “we’re going ahead with the arranged marriage and that’s final, jeno.”
·     she turns to you and tells you after you’re done helping with the wedding you’re never going to see jeno ever again
·     he cries out, running to kneel in front of you and taking your face in his hands
·     “jeno,” you say weakly, “its okay. i hope you can find happiness.” you try to smile for him but everything hurts
·     his mother watches the sad scene unfold in front of her with a tightlipped expression
·     “and i love you too, moonlight.” you whisper
·     he laughs bitterly, tears falling onto your heavy arms
·     he leans forward to kiss you
·     but his guards grab him and take him away before his lips reach yours
·     he yells your name all the way down the hall, kicking and thrashing to try and break free
·     you hang your head in sadness and feel a sob wrack through your body
·     its over
·     the day of the wedding arrives and you solemnly finish the bouquet for the bride
·     you fill it with orange mock flowers (they represent deceit) quickly hiding the daisies they had brought for it instead
·     you try to find someone to deliver it to her but everyone is bustling around trying to add the final touches
·     you trudge to her chamber and knock, hoping to place the flowers down and leave as soon as possible
·     but she invites you inside and you dig your nails in your palms to keep it together
·     she’s pretty, but from what jeno has told you about her the only thing she cares about is power
·     “so i heard you’re the one who tried to break us up.” she says through an unnerving smile
·     you stay silent
·     “its such a shame really. jeno is really torn up over you. he’s too sad to think straight. he sits in bed with this old poetry book, but he never turns the page. i think he’s gone crazy, he doesn’t even speak! but i won’t need him for much longer. once i’m in line for the throne i won’t even need to look at him.” she twirls her finger around the center of the bouquet
·     “and when i’m queen, you’ll be banished. it’s a win win!” she laughs, brushing past you to leave, “oh, and do stay for the wedding. i wanna make sure you see this.” you can hear the venom laced in her words
·     your hands are numb, four dark crescents in each palm
·     jeno stands at the altar in his dark blue suit, the same from the night you met him
·     he’s pale, rings of purple under his eyes, his hands in fists, a daisy in his pocket, you can tell he’s biting his cheek
·     you stand behind the tall vase at the back of the ballroom, peeking through the flowers
·     the music begins and in walks the princess, and jeno has never looked unhappier in his life
·     he’s barely holding her hands, nothing like the way he held yours
·     the priest asks if he takes this woman to be his lawfully wedded wife, to have and to hold for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health, for as long as they both shall live
·     you hold your breath
·     it’s silent
·     the princess is smiling, but if looks could kill jeno would’ve been struck down immediately
·     “jeno?”
·     silence
·     a tear rolls down his face and you can see his body visibly shake
·     “no.” he says as firmly as he can
·     the crowd gasps
·     he drops her hands and begins to walk off when the king comes up next to him
·     “you better get back up there right now and finish this.”
·     “no.”
·     “what did you just say?”
·     “i said no, i’m saying no, i’ve been saying no. ever since i was little i’ve thought about what it would be like when i fell in love for the first time. i’d see the way you looked at mom and i thought i can’t wait for the day where i love someone so much i look at them the same way. and funny enough i did find that love. i fell in love in a field of flowers with someone who is more beautiful inside and out than the moon and all the stars combined. i finally found the prettiest flower of them all and i won’t stop fighting for them.”
·     he pauses and turns to look at his dad
·     “i know im going against your word, but you always told me a good king was one who finds strength in those around him, one who grows and rules to the best of his ability, and i’m the strongest when i’m with them, dad.”
·     he turns to the crowd, desperation dripping off his words
·     “i want to be a ruler you’re all proud of, but what kind of king would i be if i didn’t fight for what i want most?”
·     you didn’t realize you were crying until your tears ran down your neck
·     the queen stands up and you fear the worst for both you and jeno
·     “you really love them? you love them this much?”
·     “mother, i’ve always wanted true love. you know that. and i can’t see myself with anyone else.”
·     the princess is throwing daggers with her eyes behind them
·     the queen pauses for a moment and without turning around she says “come up here.”
·     you hesitantly walk up the aisle in your raggedy work clothes, your heartbeat pounding between your ears at all the eyes on you
·     jeno gasps “you were still here?”
·     “in no way are you ready to become royalty let alone a ruler, but i’ve never seen jeno stand up to us like this before, and i must admit it hurt my heart to not be able to give him the true love he wished for all these years. it’s not that i didn’t want him to experience it, i just wanted him to have the best partner for ruling over his people. but i think i caused more harm than good in doing so. you seem to really love him, and that’s all a mother could ever want for her child. if you promise to take all of the classes and lessons you need and work extremely hard to learn about this kingdom and what’s best for it, i’ll agree to you dating him. if you meet my husband’s and my approval, then maybe we can discuss marriage.”
·     “what!? absolutely not!” the princess stomps her foot “i’m supposed to be queen!”
·     “you never cared about my son anyway. get in your carriage and go back to your kingdom.” the king hisses
·     she throws her bouquet to the ground and storms out
·     both you and jeno are speechless, silent tears rolling down your faces
·     you thank the queen endlessly, promising to do whatever it takes
·     you cling on to him, trying not to collapse to the floor
·     “i almost lost you.” you say into the fabric of his suit
·     “never.” he mumbles into your hair
·     you walk hand in hand, fingers intertwined, back to your field
·     you lay down in the flowers and never let go of each other
·     tears wiped away with kisses
·     fingertips tracing the shape of your mouth
·     as the stars begin to poke out of the sky jeno connects your lips
·     it isn’t until the sun peeks up over the hill that he pulls away
·     and a year to the day you first met the prince in the valley, you stand in the same place, amongst the same daisies, under the same stars, reciting vows to each other’s teary eyes

Second in Command (Epilogue - Part Seven)
Tumblr media
Summary: Life as the “spare to the heir” isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be when you’re the supposed screw-up of the family, but people don’t know what really happens behind closed doors.
Rating: Mature
A/N: You guys are totally going to be annoyed with me for how I left it on a cliffhanger when I totally didn’t have to except to show some character growth and how things change...which I guess is exactly the reason I ended it that way :D

“Can I come in, son?”
“Yeah, of course,” Killian answers automatically, the shock of his father just showing up at his door stunning him for only a moment. It’s not like he never visits. He usually just calls or texts first. “I didn’t know you were coming over, dad. Why didn’t you call?”
“Oh, I was visiting the kids and thought I’d drop by since I knew that the two of you had returned home.” His dad steps inside, squeezing his shoulder before leaning down to pet Indy. “Hello, darling,” he then greets Emma, kissing her cheek before wrapping her up in a hug. “How are you feeling today?”
“Good, good,” Emma insists, her eyes still blown wide as if she’s actually been shocked. He knows she’s still a bit rattled from the flight and her nausea. The same thing had happened when they went out sailing the morning of their anniversary, before the disaster of the rest of that day, and even though he had been wary of it, Emma insisted she was fine. She never said she wasn’t, but the green of her face told him otherwise. “How are you?”
“Kicking pretty high for my age.”
“You are not old,” she laughs, tugging on Indy’s leash. “Do you mind if I take Indy for a quick walk? Let her run around a bit. She’s been told she’s going outside, and I’m afraid she’ll freak out if she doesn’t get to go.”
“Of course, dear. I’ll chat with Killian, and the second you two come back inside, I want to hear all about how you’ve been since you left us to go holiday in the warm sunshine. I swear it’s rained for the past week.”
“Sounds like a plan.” Emma takes a step over toward him, leaning up and kissing his cheek, whispering that she’ll be right back before taking a step outside with Indy and leaving him with his dad.
“Do you want something to drink? Eat?”
“I’m fine.” His father begins walking to the living room, settling down into the recliner he prefers when visiting all while Killian sits down on the couch next to him, only a side table between them. “So how was your holiday?”
He almost chokes on his own saliva thinking of all of the things he absolutely cannot tell his father about their holiday as well as wondering if he should bring up the privacy issue just yet. He doesn’t know, is never truly sure about these types of things. He could have a nice, normal conversation with his father or it could turn into another tense, stressful one. He’s had enough of those for a lifetime, but he also knows that he doesn’t have all of the time in the world to fix this. He’s got fewer than four months, really.
“It was wonderful,” he finally answers, his lips ticking up on one side. It really was wonderful to get away with Emma and only have each other for awhile despite the disaster that was their anniversary. It got better, though. It wasn’t completely bad. They had the sailing trip and the takeout meal that was better than anything else they’d eaten if only for how comfortable they both felt. He felt his son move for the first time, which was bloody brilliant and most definitely his new favorite thing. “It’s a gorgeous island. Emma mentioned something about asking you to make our beaches like that.”
Brennan barks out a laugh, the wrinkles on his face all gathering together while his gray hair shakes the slightest bit. If Killian was a betting man, he’d guess his dad is getting his hair cut in the next two or three days, keeping up with his lifelong schedule of haircuts. “If only I could. That would be bloody wonderful. But I like the way she thinks.”
“She’s definitely a brilliant dreamer.” He trails off toward the end of his sentence, looking down at his hand and twisting his ring around his finger, his constant physical reminder of his lifelong commitment to Emma, as if he really needs one. “Can I talk to you about something, dad?”
“Of course.”
“I know, well, I know that things were different when I was a kid, that technology wasn’t as advanced, that I was a bit of a surprise child and that you were on the older side when I was born.”
“Well, why don’t you just call me elderly then, Killian? And you have absolutely no proof that you were a surprise child.”
His dad laughs when he speaks, but Killian isn’t finding a lot of humor in it, knowing that he’s likely going to upset Brennan with his words.
“What I mean is, I know you weren’t really, truly involved in my life. And I’m not blaming you or trying to make you feel…upset, but I need a very particular kind of advice that really only you and mum or Liam and Abigail can give. And I’m honestly not even sure you can give it.”
“What’s wrong, Killian?”
He takes a moment to collect himself, hundreds of words on the tip of his tongue but none of them feeling quite right. But he has to say something, so he might as well speak the truth.
“How the hell am I supposed to be a father in a world where I can’t protect the privacy of my wife and my child? There were, um, photographers who rented out a house and used scopes to take pictures of us on the beach. And Emma and I got into a pretty nasty argument about it. She’s worried…I’m worried about Andrew’s privacy. We want him to live a life as normal as possible. We don’t want photographers following him to school or to the park, and I just – I don’t know how to fix it.”
He’s been clenching his fist all while he talks, the tenseness in his hand almost painful while hot tears form in his eyes, every fault and every insecurity he’s had long before the fight with Emma coming back and assaulting his senses, making everything a dark, cloudy blur.
Brennan looks calm, secure, the blue of his eyes not changing while his eyelids rapidly blink, his brows furrowing and the lines on his face increasing. Has he said too much? Shown too much emotion? Asked for the impossible?
“The fact that you have very obviously beaten yourself up about this proves that you are a better dad than I ever have been.”
“That’s not what I meant, dad. I didn’t – ”
“I know, Killian. I’m not taking offense to anything. I was a poor excuse for a father for the majority of your life. I was focused on Liam, on my job, on the protocol and the way that my father raised Albert and me. All I knew was that fathers were not supposed to be close to their children, and as much as that hurt me as a child, I stupidly believed it. The fact that you have forgiven me is something I still can’t believe.”
He leans over and places his hand on Brennan’s knee, patting him before leaning back and wiping at his eyes. “I did it for me, but with the way you’ve worked to change, you deserve it.”
“Thank you, my boy.” His father smiles, settling back into his chair and crossing his hands together in his lap. “But this is not about me. This is about you and your family. So you don’t want Andrew in the public eye? At all? Is that what you’re saying?”
“I mean, we haven’t discussed it in serious length, but yes. I’m sure that Emma will be okay with releasing the occasional photo or having him join us when we go overseas so we don’t have to be apart from him, but I think we’re going to have to take a step back in traditions. And when he gets older, I think we may need to move somewhere much more private.”
The front door opens then, the alarm beep sounding at the same time that he hears the click of nails and the squeak of sneakers as well as Emma’s voice. He straightens up, fixing his hunched back and sitting against the couch in as much of a relaxed position as he can.
“Go find, Killian, girl, yeah,” Emma coos, her voice getting louder the closer she gets to the living room. And then she’s in view, Indy running in first and jumping up on the couch before getting down once she spots Brennan, less familiar people always more exciting than him. Emma walks toward him, sitting down in the seat Indy just vacated and reaching around him to tangle her fingers in his hair, stroking the strands. “What’s wrong? Your shoulders are tensed.”
How the hell does she always know?
“Killian and I,” his father answers for him, seemingly understanding that Killian wasn’t sure what to say, “were simply talking about how you two seem to be suffering from some privacy issues and are worried about your child’s future, that you want Andrew to lead a more private life than normal.”
“Oh,” Emma gulps, her hand stilling in his hair before beginning again, “well, yeah. I know that we all grew up differently and that my childhood isn’t really an option, but that’s what I want, what we want. We want him to be able to be a kid, you know? I don’t want him to be used to cameras everywhere he goes. I don’t know how we’d fix that, but that’s definitely my top priority right now. And forever probably.”
His hand finds Emma’s knee, thumb running back and forth over the material of her leggings while she speaks. He’s here with her, for her, consistently, and he hopes that she knows this.
“Why don’t you two give me some time to think things over? I’ll meet with security. We’ll work out some plans and ideas. You two should probably talk to Liam and Abigail. It’s not, well, it won’t be exactly the same. You have more freedom than them, and they’re not quite as private as the two of you. But they do have experience in all of this.” “Thank you, Brennan,” Emma sighs, leaning back into the couch and scratching at his neck, his eyes fluttering closed for a quick moment.
“Of course, but at the end of the day, above everything else, we’re a family. How you two feel is far more important than any sort of duty and tradition we have, even if I do ask that we stick to the important ones.”
“Actually, I have something else that I want to talk about.”
His head snaps to her, eyes searching for what she has to say, but she’s not looking at him, her gaze trained on the wag of Indy’s tail while her fingers tap over his on her leg, the hand in his hair having stilled.
“What do you want to talk about, love?”
She looks at him then, the smallest of smiles on her face that comforts him the slightest bit, before directing her gaze to Brennan. “I don’t want to walk out of the hospital all made up hours after giving birth. Kudos to Abigail. She is a badass woman for that, but that’s not what I want. Andy doesn’t need to be exposed to so many people as a newborn. I don’t need to be all dressed up when I’ve just given birth. I don’t care about tradition when it comes to this. This is what I’m doing, and I really feel like it’s the first step in taking a stand about him not being some kind of public property.”
He didn’t know she felt that way about any of that, nearly every word she said news to him, but he gets it, supports it. If that’s what Emma wants for this, that’s what they’ll do. He’s never quite understood that tradition anyways, and he likes the idea of a more private celebration with just them and their families while Emma heals and they adjust to the terrifying process of being parents for the first time.
“I’m not sure we can do that, dear.”
“What?” His head snaps over to his dad, trying to process the words. “You literally just said that how we feel is more important than any duty we have.”
“But that we need to stick to the important traditions, yes. New family members are an important tradition.”
“Brennan,” Emma grits, her voice strained as she tries to keep it friendly, “I respect our family and all of the traditions we have, but I am not some kind of human machine who’s only here to produce babies. Yes, of course this is a big deal, but it’s a big deal for us as a personal family, not as some part of the institution. You can still put the sign up, make any and all announcements you want. Hell, I’ll release a picture if we have to, but all I’m asking is that we’re allowed to leave and travel home in peace.”
“I agree, dad. I mean, really. Of all of the things we break and bend, of all of the things we change, surely you can let this one thing go? It’s not hundreds of years ago where people are faking pregnancies and paternities to keep the line intact, which was ridiculous then. I think letting family be family is the most important thing, don’t you?”
“Aye, it’s just…you’ll have to forgive me.” Brennan runs his hand over his face, visibly warring something within himself, the lines on his face stressing. “You were right earlier when you said things are different now. These are not things that I really went through with you, not as prevalent as you. Emma, dear, I’m sorry. I don’t…I shouldn’t have ever considered making you do something you’re not comfortable with. I love you dearly, and you and Killian know what’s best here, not me.”
“I don’t want to disappoint you,” Emma says, getting up from the couch and sitting down on the edge of the coffee table so that she can squeeze Brennan’s hand. “You are so brilliant, and you uphold this family so well. I know that I’m different, that it was difficult to accept me, but change can be good, you know?”
“I know.”
Brennan stays for a little while longer, hashing out a few more details with them before accepting a cup of tea and some food, finally listening to them talk about their holiday all the while scratching behind Indy’s ears, her eyes closed in bliss the entire time. It’s peaceful, relaxing, and he feels his shoulders loosen the longer the conversation goes on, Emma’s laughter and joyful voice sounding throughout the room. In the back of his mind, though, he keeps replaying the conversation, thinking of everything he said, everything they all said, and he’s amazed it all went as smoothly as it did, surprised that his father acquiesced to their private exit from the hospital so easily. He had no idea that Emma wanted that, and he wonders how long she’s been toying with the idea, how many late nights she’s spent worrying about bringing it up. He knows she didn’t just think of it now, that it wasn’t spur of the moment, and he tries to remind himself to ask her about it later, to make sure that there’s nothing else she’s hoarding inside.
She goes through enough, has gone through enough over the years, and she shouldn’t feel like she has to hold things back from him.
But he saves his thoughts for later, letting his dad leave and letting Emma take a nap, her eyes falling shut without her even laying down on the couch. He wakes her before she can get into too deep of a sleep, though, knowing that it’ll hurt her back, and helps her go upstairs to their room, ignoring the curses she’s muttering under her breath about him waking her up. While she sleeps, he goes downstairs to his office, answering emails and clearing out his inbox that he left alone while they were in Spain.
Summer is normally a slow time for them, June and July full of engagements while August is usually taken off to spend in Balmoral. Emma’s due in September, though, a few days after his birthday, and she’s not working after August begins. He is, though, doing his regular work and making a few short trips, making sure never to never travel more than three hours away in case he needs to be home.
But that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have things to do now, organizing his files and reviewing the financials for Kidding a Goal until Indy comes walking into his office, her nails clicking against the wood until she’s staring up at him with her mouth wide open, tongue practically falling out of her mouth. He checks his watch and sees that it’s far past seven. He’s surprised she didn’t come and get him two hours ago.
“You ready to eat, my girl?”
That gets her tail wagging before she takes off, running toward the kitchen at such a pace that she’s probably there before he even gets up from his chair. Sure enough, she’s already waiting next to her bowl like the most well-behaved dog in the world, which is not something he expected when he and Emma decided to get a dog last year. But she’s done well, their training working most of the time, but Indy does have the tendency to lick his face when he’s sleeping. He’s not a fan of that.
But she’s his best bud and a constant companion on his runs, so it all evens out.
After feeding her, he hears footsteps coming down the stairs, Emma wandering into the kitchen with sleep-rumpled hair and pillow streaks on her face, her pajama top falling off of one shoulder. She immediately heads toward the fridge, grabbing a bottle of water and some yogurt before settling down on a barstool.
“How’d you sleep?”
She grunts in response, opening her yogurt and eating a large spoonful. “I hate being pregnant sometimes.”
“So not well then?”
“Nope. I felt like my guts were all being squeezed out, but do you know who’s not moving now that I’m awake and out of bed?”
“Andy.”
“Yep.”
She keeps eating her yogurt, quickly finishing it up before getting another carton. He should probably fix something for dinner so she doesn’t consume the entire yogurt supply in their fridge.
“Hey, sweetheart?”
“Yeah?” she mumbles, pulling her spoon out of her mouth and looking up at him, her hair deflating the slightest bit from when she came down.
“You want to tell me what that was earlier? With my dad. When did you decide you didn’t want to do the public announcement?”
“Oh, um, I first thought about it a few weeks ago, but it was really driven home after last week. Why? You have an issue with it?”
“No,” he laughs, leaning down across from her and propping his elbows on the counter. “I think it’s bloody brilliant, that you are brilliant. I like that you want to do things your way…our way. It’s very sexy.” “Oh boy, if you’re looking to get laid right now that is not happening.”
“Well damn. Now I have no reason to compliment you.”
“Shut up,” she groans, tossing her spoon over into the sink, the metal clanking. “But seriously, you’re okay with all that, right?”
“Of course. I want you to do what makes you comfortable. I’m not the one giving birth.”
“Damn right. I think I’m going to give your dad a heart attack though.”
“Aye, definitely. I know he’s trying and he’s being accommodating, but I could practically see the fear of breaking traditions rolling off of him in anxiety-filled waves. But he’s seventy-three. Some things just aren’t going to change.”
“So basically we hit the jackpot today?”
“Yep.” He walks over to the fridge, opening it up and seeing what they have left over from before they left. “What do you want for dinner?”

“Bloody buggering hell,” he curses, bringing his thumb to his mouth and soothing where he just jammed his finger on the wood.
Building a crib should not be this difficult, but it apparently is. He’s been following the instructions exactly, making sure that each piece is doubly secure, and he’s not sure how it’s taking this long. He should be finished, this crib should be made, and he should be able to move onto the shelves or Emma’s glider that she was insistent on them getting.
He’s spent more time in this room in the past month than he has in any other room in the house, June somehow running away with itself all while he’s been hidden away within these four walls. It took a month and a half for he and Emma to decide on a simple light gray, one that he’s pretty sure is also in their bedroom, but honestly, once they both agreed on the color (likely because they have agreed on it once before), he wasn’t going to say anything else. He did pick out the gray-ish blue that’s on the wall with the shelves (or at least where they’ll go once he gets to them), so he’s pretty proud of it.
Neither he or Emma are much one for designing, though they have gotten a bit more into it since the remodel of the apartment, but he’s pretty proud of how Andy’s room is shaping up, even if the lad will stay in the bassinet in their room for awhile. It’s a simple room, clean lines and clean colors. All of the furniture are different shades of white and warm browns, woods really, with natural accents. Abigail gifted them a large wooden giraffe along with some leaf and animal prints, so those are sitting in the corner waiting to be placed after all of this furniture is built.
His favorite part, though, is definitely going to be the little sitting area by the shelves and the changing table. He’s not under any impression that this is going to be a calm room, a place to relax, but he figures there have to be times when he’s rocking Andy back to sleep in that very spot, the shelves filled with colorful children’s books that’ll become routine reading one day as well as being filled with several stuffed animals and photo frames that he can’t wait to update with pictures. Of course, the cabinets below will be filled with the essentials, the things no one likes to talk about like diapers and nipple cream (that was something Emma did not want to know about, and he honestly doesn’t blame her), but they’re definitely still in the dreamy, picture perfect nursery phase where the messiness of a child isn’t quite a factor.
Really to him, as much as he knows this is real, as much as he sees the physical proof, feels the physical proof (which holy shit is it incredible to be able to feel his son move), it’s still difficult for him to comprehend that in two months he and Emma will have a child. It’s something they’ve talked about for years, something they were planning on, but it’s difficult to put into words just how much love he has for his son.
And his wife.
She’s a rockstar in every sense of the word, and if he doesn’t mention it enough, Emma sure as hell will. He loves her fiercely, and that love is another thing that he can’t quite put into words. He honestly doesn’t understand men who moan and groan about their wives constantly. If anything, he finds it disgusting. Yes, you’re going to have disagreements with your significant other. That’s natural when you decide to spend your life with someone who has their own wants, needs, and opinions, but at the end of the day, his wife is his best friend. If there’s anyone he wants to spend time with, it’s her. No question.
If the answer to who your best friend isn’t your spouse or the person you’re marrying, he doesn’t understand why the hell you’d bother getting married. His mates are great, but they’re not Emma.
Maybe he is a bit of the cheeseball that Emma always claims him to be, but he likes it that way.
He’s definitely going to embarrass his kids. All of the time. He can’t wait. He’s got a few years, but he can’t wait.
“You know we can hire someone to do this, right?” Emma asks, a bit of laughter in her tone that makes him roll his eyes. His best friend, most definitely. The teasing is just a small part of that.
“Aye, but I’ve started it, and I intend on finishing it.” “Okay, but the crib doesn’t need to fall apart while there’s a baby inside of it, and the glider doesn’t need to fall apart while I’m sitting on it. That’s, like, a double disaster, and I know you lived by yourself for a long time, but I’m pretty sure you’re not capable of that anymore.”
“Oh, really? Because I was just going to make them as unsafe as possible so that I could live by myself again. I miss being able to stretch out in the bed.”
“You’re so funny,” she teases from the other side of the nursery where she’s putting away the washed clothes in the closet, organizing them by size. He swears they have enough clothes to last Andy for the first two years of his life, and that’s not counting the piles of things he knows David and Mary Margaret have at their house. “I think I may have bought him too much stuff. I don’t even think I own this many things.”
“You don’t mess your clothes up multiple times a day.”
“Good point.”
“I tend to make those.”
“Eh. Debatable.”
“Not at all debatable.” He turns back to the crib, looking at the instructions to see if he can remember where he left off before Emma distracted him. “Shit, this is impossible.”
“I can call my dad, babe. It won’t be a problem. He’s a bit handier than you.”
“Please, I am plenty handy.”
“Okay, well being handy with me is not the same as being handy when it comes to building things.”
“If we call your dad, he’s going to take over. I want to do some of this myself.”
“I will tell Dad just to help. Come on, babe, you love spending time with my dad.”
“Only now that he doesn’t give me the scary speeches anymore.”
“Yeah, I bet those were a lot of fun.”
“I mean, it’s been a solid half a decade since I’ve gotten one, but he still shakes me to my core.”
He hears Emma laugh, snort really, before she makes her way over to him, slowly settling down on the floor next to him and waving her hand until he gives her the instructions. She looks over them while looking at the crib, her eyes continuously darting between the two.
“You put part G in backwards. That’s why nothing after that is fitting.”
“Bloody hell,” he curses, reaching over and taking the instructions from her hand and checking to see if she really did just solve his problem, “how did you see that when I’ve been staring at it for the past hour?”
“Fresh eyes, my love. Fresh eyes.” She leans forward and kisses his cheek before falling back against the wall. “And that’s exactly why calling my dad and asking him to come over in the morning will be a great idea. I bet Mom will want to come too, and she does a mean job with a power drill.”
So Emma calls her parents who agree to come over in the morning. On top of moving, they’ve also begun to change around the hours of the pub, opening it earlier and letting Will close it out at night. And it’s because of this that they show up at eight in the morning, he and Emma both still asleep when their doorbell rings. Emma groans when she hears it, burying her face into his chest and making it impossible for him to get up without disturbing her. He can feel Andy summersaulting around in her belly, and he smiles to himself knowing that she’s going to have get up. She can’t sleep when he’s moving around like that.
He can’t sleep when Emma’s basically running marathons in bed, but that’s not something he’s going to voice out loud. He can get up and sleep in a guest room if he needs to. Emma can’t get up and walk away from the person who’s running marathons in her stomach.
There’s two human feet inside of her. That’s pretty weird if he thinks about it too much.
Okay, so really weird.
Slowly but surely he gets out of bed, letting Emma flip over into his spot, and heads downstairs to open the front door. David and Mary Margaret have a key, but they never use it, always waiting for either he or Emma to open the door for them, which he appreciates after one too many times having them walk in on he and Emma.
“Hi,” he greets, opening the door and ushering them inside. “Emma’s still asleep, but I’m sure she’ll wake up soon. Do you guys want some breakfast?”
“We ate at home, sweetie,” Mary Margaret greets, giving him a quick hug before David does the same. “So Emma said you guys were having some issues in the nursery.”
“I believe that it was more like Killian not being able to put together a crib in under three weeks.”
“So funny, Dave,” he bites, rolling his eyes and locking the door. “I did eventually figure it out. I just think this mid-July heat is obviously getting to me. Or maybe nerves. I’m not too sure.”
“Well, let’s go help then. We’ve got to be at the pub at two, but I think we should be able to get things done.”
After he fixes himself some coffee, not nearly as wide awake as David and Mary Margaret, they head upstairs and begin working in the nursery, assembling the shelves and drilling them into the walls in half the time that it would have taken he and Emma had they done this by themselves. So maybe help isn’t all bad. Before Emma even wakes up, they have the shelves installed and pictures securely nailed on the wall. There are books already being stacked, stuffed animals and knick knacks being placed, and all of the fun nipple creams and breast pumps being placed in the cabinet.
They’re working on the glider when Emma finally wanders in, her hair falling out of its band so that half of it spills down her back while the other half is piled on top of her head, and she’s got her glasses on, something she only does when her eyes feel too puffy to put her contacts in.
“Hey, sweetheart,” David greets, finishing tightening the screw he’s working on before getting up to embrace Emma. “How are you feeling?”
“Rough today. I think the little dude’s a giant or something because he crushes my lungs and my bladder at the same time. So I can’t breathe, and I have to pee. So, yeah, it’s fun.”
“I’m sorry.”
“Thanks, dad. It looks fantastic in here. You guys have done so much. I feel like we’re not going to have anything to do in the next two months if we finish all of this.”
“That’s kind of the point, love.”
“Yeah,” she yawns, covering her mouth, “I know. Mom, do you want to come and rest with me in my room? My back hurts today, and I just can’t sit on the floor in here with you guys.” “Of course, hon,” Mary Margaret answers, walking away from the closet and stepping over to Emma before she rubs up and down her back. “Are you sure you don’t want Killian to join you? David and I would be fine to work on our own.”
“No, it’s fine. I bug him all day, and I’m kind of thinking that you can paint my toes for me or we can watch movies or something. It’s been awhile since we’ve done that.”
“Text me if you need me, love,” he tells Emma, his eyes tracing over her in a bit of concern. It’s difficult watching her be uncomfortable or miserable on some days when he literally can’t do anything about it.
“Yeah, babe, I will.”
Emma and Mary Margaret walk out of the room, their voices fading away as they walk into their bedroom one room over, and he’s left with just David who promptly gets back to work finishing building the chair. Music plays in the background, an eighties’ playlist he thinks, and it doesn’t take longer before the chair is completely together and he’s sitting in it testing it out. It’s comfortable, probably one of the best seats they have in the house, and he can definitely understand why Emma insisted on this one after shopping around a bit.
“How does someone so small have so much stuff?”
“My child is twenty-eight years old, we don’t even live in her childhood home anymore, and I swear things of hers still pop up all of the time.”
“That’s likely because Emma leaves everything all over the place.”
He folds his hands behind his head, closing his eyes and rocking back and forth while Cherry Bomb plays in the background, which is definitely not a nursery appropriate song. Or maybe it is. Who needs Mozart when you can have The Runaways?
“So is Emma like that every day?”
“Like what?” he asks, popping an eye open to look at David who’s sitting against the shelves, which can’t be good for his back. God, how old is he getting if his first concern is for someone else’s back?
“Exhausted.”
“No, not every day. She’s usually got a hell of a lot of energy, even if there’s always a nap. I think she had a restless night. She’ll tell me like it is, though. If she’s having a bad day, she’ll let us know.” “What about you?”
“Well, I don’t have a baby crushing my lungs and my bladder.”
“True,” David laughs, running his hands through his short hair. Killian swears it’s gotten more gray in the past year, the blonde nearly disappearing. David is only fifty-two, so he’s not exactly older. Hell, if it weren’t for the wrinkles on his forehead and the gray hairs outnumbering the blonde, he’d look much younger. “But I remember being a dad for the first time. It’s terrifying, so you’re allowed to be scared.”
“I am. It’s…” He reaches up and scratches behind his ear, his hair getting long enough that he knows he needs to get a haircut soon. “Emma and I try to make sure that we keep up our normal routines, that we have our normal conversations without talking too much about the baby, but it’s kind of hard, you know? It’s like we’ll be talking about going out to eat and two minutes later we’re making a list of middle names or speculating if he’s going to look more like me or Emma.”
“I know. But it’s an exciting time, Killian. There will never be anything like it, and if you want to talk about the fact that you’re having a kid, you should. You and Emma have been together for so long, and I really don’t think your relationship is going to struggle if you’re not sitting around making references no one else understands for hours on end.”
“Oi,” he protests, resisting the urge to pick up the toy elephant next to him and throw it at David, “that is your daughter you’re mocking, and she can still kick your ass.”
“Trust me, I know. Who do you think raised her to be like that?”
“Mary Margaret.”
“You’re walking a thin line.”
He winks at David, his lips ticking up on the right into a smirk. “I know. You and Mary Margaret did such a good job, still do such a good job, and even with all of the times you’ve messed up – ”
“ – which is a lot more often than even Emma has probably told you.”
“I just…you’re a good dad, Dave. To Emma, to me. I hope I can do half as good as a job.”
“You’ll be great, Killian.” David smiles at him, something genuine, and Killian’s reminded of how much David really has impacted his life in all of the best ways. “I promise. And as much as I love you, I do love my little girl more, and she’s going to be amazing. She’s always…she’s never been too open to a lot of people, but the people she loves, she loves so fiercely, you know? And she’s already doing so well at being a mom. She’ll call me at nights, and I can just hear the happiness and excitement in her voice. At the end of the day, that’s all you want, you know? For your kid to be healthy and happy.”
“Yeah, I know.” He smiles to himself, thinking of how happy he is. “Also, how dare you imply that you love your own daughter more than me. I thought I meant more to you than that. I thought we had something special, man.”
“I can still give you hell. I’d watch yourself.”
He and David finish up in the nursery for the next few hours until David and Mary Margaret have to go to work, leaving after the three of them eat lunch down in the kitchen, Emma staying upstairs for a nap. When the Nolans are gone and he’s finished eating, he heads upstairs, bypassing the nursery and walking into their bedroom where Emma is sitting up on the bed watching TV.
“Your toes look nice,” he compliments, grabbing onto her big toe and moving it back and forth. “Do you feel any better?”
“Yeah,” she sighs, twisting onto her back and scooting up the bed, “it’s just one of those days, you know? I’m not usually this miserable.”
“I know, but it’s okay to have bad days, love.”
“Come here,” she tells him, crooking her fingers and motioning toward him before she turns on her side and wraps her arms around her pillow. He does as she asks, kicking off his sneakers and crawling up into the bed, the mattress moving against his weight until he’s pressed up behind her, his knee stuck between her thighs and his arm wrapped around her waist while the other rests above her head. This is how she’s been comfortable lately, and he can’t say he minds. “Did you guys get a lot done?”
“Aye, it’s almost all finished.” He moves her hair off of her neck, placing a kiss there before resting his chin on her shoulder. “It just needs your finishing touches, I think.”
“And we have to unpack all of the boxes that are in the guest room and put them away in the closet.” “That too, but we’ve got time, Emma.” She hums, and he can feel the vibrations as well as Andy moving around under his touch, the movements following how he taps his fingers. “Has he been active today?”
“Not since I woke up, but he always responds to your voice.” “Yeah, he recognizes me?”
“Of course, you talk so damn much. How could he not?”
He turns his head and presses a kiss against her jaw, biting a bit just to tease her. “You are not a very nice woman, my love.”
“Oh please, I’m, like, the seventh nicest person you know.”
“Seventh?”
“I figured it was conceited to put me at number one.”
“Possibly.” He moves his hand against her stomach again, snaking his fingers up under her pajama top so that he can feel the warmth of her skin. “So he really does get more active when I talk?”
“Yeah, it’s pretty weird to think about, but it’s true. He likes when you talk. I think it’s because you’re a much better story teller than me.” “I mean, obviously.”
“And that he’s probably just glad to hear someone else besides me. Imagine being stuck with someone for nine months. Good God.”
“Well, I’m stuck with you for forever. Good God.”
She groans and curses him under his breath before she scoots over and turns in his arms, slowly but surely moving to face him. “Don’t be an asshole. Also, so I was talking to mom today, and she wants to be called Mimi. I think Dad wants to be called Papa, which I like as long as that’s not what you want. I know that’s what some kids call their dads.”
“Aye, it’s what Lizzie calls Liam, which is weird since Alex doesn’t do that. But I’m okay with dad or daddy, so David can be called Papa.”
“Yeah, I kind of like it. Mimi and Papa. And then your parents are Gammy and Grandpa, right? That’s what Alex and Lizzie call them.”
“Aye, but I know Mom didn’t want to be Gammy. It’s just what happened. She says it makes her feel old.”
“Your mom is not old.”
“I know, but considering your parents are barely fifty while my parents are in their sixties and seventies, it doesn’t help.”
“I’ll tell my parents to get older then.”
He smiles at her before closing his eyes and settling into his pillow, letting his head sink down into the softness. It’s calming in here, the lights turned off and curtains closed while the ceiling fan hums a steady rhythm above them. He could fall asleep like this even if he’s not the biggest fan of naps, always somehow ending up groggy when he wakes up, and it doesn’t help with the way that Emma is playing with the hair at the nape of his neck, her fingers scratching into his scalp.
“Are you working tomorrow?”
He pops an eye open, looking at Emma and smiling when her nail hits a particularly sensitive spot on his neck. “Aye, I’ve got the Investiture ceremony at ten. Why?”
“Just wondering. I was thinking we could go somewhere. Just us. Maybe take Indy to Berkshire and let her run around, spend some time outside.” “We can do it in the afternoon, if you want. I think the weather is supposed to be nice.”
“Yeah,” she sighs, leaning forward and sliding her lips over his for a brief moment, “I think that would be nice.”
The next day after he’s finished with the ceremony, he hurries home, changing out of his suit and into shorts and a t-shirt, slipping a baseball cap onto his head and grabbing something to eat for lunch while Emma does the same, her hair falling out of the back of her hat in a long ponytail. They’ve got all day, but the afternoon’s weather is pleasant enough that he’d like to go now so they can stop by a café for dinner, even if that’s the absolute last thing that Thomas will want them to do.
They want their privacy, but they should be able to go out to dinner.
So he and Emma load up into his car, letting Indy sit in the backseat with the window rolled down so she can feel the mid-July breeze blow through her fur. It doesn’t take long to get to Windsor, pulling into their parking garage less than thirty minutes later, and instead of going inside like they’d usually do, he hooks Indy up to her leash while Emma grabs some water bottles and they head to the private gardens, avoiding the visitors wandering around on tours.
As much as he prefers the spring, mild July days are near the top of his list of favorite things. Everything is brighter, more pleasant. The grass is actually greener, the flowers contrasting against their background to create a landscape of whites and shades of purple, while everything is covered in a clear blue sky, only a few white clouds scattered throughout. New life blooms, and he gets to be the one to appreciate it, to revel in it. England can be so dreary sometimes, the weather somehow reflecting the moods of most people on their morning commute to work, so he appreciates when it’s not. He’s always loved the outdoors, and if there’s any complaint he has about his home, it’s the small private garden that they have to themselves. He’d like something larger, more space to run around, and sometime in the future, he and Emma plan to spend more time in Bucklebury so that they have the privacy.
That’s what they’ve decided on since returning from Spain last month. There’s been more lengthy, draining discussions with his parents and their security team than he’s ever wanted, and as much as he feels like they haven’t really accomplished anything, he knows it’s a slow process. Of course, there are drawbacks to every positive. They’re still going to have to spend most of their time at Kensington. It’s closer to their work, to their families. Hell, Emma’s parents just bought a house so that they could have the ability to spend time with their grandchild, and now they’re going to move away from them. It’s less than an hour drive, but it’s not nearly as close as they currently are.
But everyone understands, and they don’t plan on moving any time soon, not until Andy’s a bit older. They want to be near all of their loved ones when he’s younger, and they’ve spent so much time working on their home, making it exactly how they want. It’d be difficult to leave full time, so it’ll be nice to have the option of both.
It’ll be even nicer to give Andy the most normal life that they can possibly give him.
Emma whistles next to him, her fingers between her lips, while Indy runs back to them from where they let her loose. She was about five seconds away from jumping into a pond full of fish, and as much as they’d usually let her swim, they don’t need to have a wet dog with them for the rest of the day. So she runs back to them as quickly as she can, her legs leaping in the air with her black and white fur bouncing the slightest bit. He’s convinced that she shouldn’t be able to be that quick, but she’s still just a young dog, less than a year old, and though her legs will get longer, he doesn’t think she’ll ever be full of this much energy again.
If she is, he and Emma are definitely in over their heads.
With the dog.
He’s going to choose to not think of what it’ll be like with a toddler than can run and a dog that he can run after.
After she calms from her almost pond dive, Indy walks along in front of the two of them, occasionally wandering off the stone path to sniff around in the plants, nearly tearing up several flowers until they call her back to keep walking. They stay wandering for a little over two hours, not caring where exactly they’re going or if they’re circling back around in the same spots. Indy and Emma get tired around the same time, so they settle down onto a stone bench with a patio cover that’s next to another small pond.
In the distance, he can see the Chapel where they were married, the steeple rising up above the other buildings and stone walls, and he smiles to himself thinking of that day. In the grand scheme of things, he knows that when it comes to he and Emma, as important as it was, they had so many smaller, inconsequential days that he holds just as fondly in his heart.
But that was a pretty damn good day.
He stretches his arm out over the back of the bench, wrapping it around Emma’s shoulder and tangling his fingers into the ends of her ponytail while she leans her head on his shoulder, the bill of her hat hitting him in the chin for a brief moment. He’s glad she suggested them getting away from London for a little bit, for suggesting that they change up the routine and spend a day enjoying summer, especially since they’re missing out on Scotland with the rest of the family.
A month in the same place as everyone is likely a bit long, anyways. He loves his family, but that’s a lot for anyone.
“I love you, you know?” Emma asks out of nowhere, her gaze never falling away from the rippling of the water in front of them, a fish leaping up out of the water while the lily pads float around.
He squeezes her shoulder, rubbing up and down her arm and kissing her head even if she can’t feel it through the hat. “I know. I love you too.”

Phoenix Protocol 04
A Zavala x Female Guardian work.
Tumblr media
Summary: When the Traveler’s Light was returned to the Guardians after the defeat of the Cabal, it did not manifest itself the same in everyone. Miyu, an Awoken Warlock, finds herself struggling with her abilities, her Light feeling different and not her own. With her Vanguard preoccupied with grief and all eyes turned to the Reef, she finds herself turning to an unlikely source in an attempt to rediscover her connection to the Light and define what it means for her as a Dawnblade.
Previously
She makes sure to get there early. Ghost is barely awake - which is saying something for a being that does not actually require sleep like she does. Quietly, carefully, she withdraws her notepad from her bag and rests it carefully atop the books he’d lent her. Her hand is cramping a bit this morning, likely from training the night before, but she ignores it as she holds her pen. It will pass. The skin is healed, the regenerated nerves just aren’t immune to the knowledge of what they’d suffered. She focuses, meditating on what she’s read in the last day or so, and waits for Zavala and his trainees to arrive.
A lot of what she’d read was philosophical. What it meant to be a Titan. What they stood for. At first, she’d believed it to be impractical to rely on such knowledge. But, as she read onward, she realized he’d chosen these texts for a reason. He was hoping for her to find a commonality.
Light could be - and often was - measured in terms of enemies vanquished, in the amount of time the Guardian can manifest the pinnacle of their bond to the Traveler. She knows her benchmarks, and clearly he believes she’s measured them (she has). It was incredibly flattering, she felt, for him to care as he did. Not to say that he didn’t have some connection to her, being the leader of the Vanguard, but even so. The fact that he’d had a short conversation with her and still managed - despite his schedule - to select books for her to read meant a lot.
She’d joked with Ghost that she must be pathetic if one person being nice meant such a great deal to her, that maybe she needed to get out more. She didn’t miss the sad twitch of his cones. Miyu knows he’s worried, and this isn’t something that gets fixed with hugs and conversation. They’ve talked themselves in circles about her Light. She needs to find a way to fix it. For Ghost, for herself, for everyone else who is counting on her - whether they realize it or not.
In the course of her thoughts on the subject, she’s considered the liability she is for teammates on strikes. She could, in an emergency, draw up the necessary power - she hopes - for Dawnblade in its entirety. But it would maim her, easily, if not worse. She’d be useless after that. And in a Darkness Zone… it was suicide. A last resort.
At last, Zavala emerges from one of the training corridors, eight Titans in tow. Three women, based on their builds, two exo males, and one very tall, slender Awoken male followed the Vanguard closely. Two others walked further behind the main group. Based on their measured, confident gait, and the gear that looked a bit higher quality than that of the others, she guessed they might not be as new as the rest.
The Titans’ Vanguard immediately set about making them work through a series of drills - warm-ups - to get the blood flowing. His eyes cant up to her, and she nods to him. His face was impassive, unreadable, and he returns his gaze to the rest of the group after a single blink.
Afterward, he begins discussing their connection to the Void. “The Void’s voracity,” He imparts, voice carrying loud enough for her to hear, “While certainly a factor to consider, is not nearly as demanding within us as it is in Warlocks and Hunters. It does, however, require a clear mind and true intent to wield, all the same. Even if your resolve is not to care how many fall at your feet,” Zavala continues. “You must become impenetrable. Your body a shield, your Light a wall. A fortress in which your allies may seek refuge from the storm.”
It takes time for the Light to well inside a Guardian. While Zavala gives them that time, he calls upon his Traveler-given ability. Cool, lavender-violet light surrounds him in a bubble of unstoppable Light. She can feel the cool ripple of Void energy, even as far away from him as she is. It’s different from the handful of times she’s seen Ikora utilize her Nova Bomb. The hunger that the Void feels is muted, as if he is doing to the Void what the Void does to others. Feeding off of it, and it off of him. A cyclic event, she hypothesizes, jotting down a brief summary of it.
The hazy-cool pulse of it makes whatever he says to his students impossible for her to hear, but she watches with interest as he stops bracing the dome of light and allows it to simply exist. She is certain that newer, unsteady Titans would likely have to brace the entire time, which is effective as a defensive maneuver, but for an experienced Titan - and from her experience working with some of them - it is actually a small pocket of space summoned to give them an advantage.
He shows them what it feels like to be shielded within the Ward, stepping out of it and back in with each of them in turn. An overshield - she knew about this perk of the Titan’s ability. They all radiate a similar pale purple when they step inside, making their forms look extremely distorted from her outsider’s point of view.
Later, after exhausting them with calling upon their own fledgling abilities, he invites them all to attempt to break his shield.
He stands inside it plainly, arms at his sides. Does not move to attack. Does not attempt to defend. A cockier man would sit down within it and close his eyes, wait for it to be over. Maybe even make a snarking comment at the fact that there was not even a ripple in his Ward, that it sustained minimal damage. Zavala does not. When they are all panting, overwhelmed by their leader’s great strength and resolve, he encourages them to take a break, water themselves and then join him in meditating on what they have learned before returning to the Tower to begin their day.
Miyu follows along, returning to the bleachers instead of standing beside one of the structural supports, allowing breath to fill her lungs and her mind to clear. Meditation is centering, and she allows herself to reflect on her questions, on Solar and Void, their burning demanding need to consume and feed.
Feed the void and it grows colder. Numbs. Consumes.
Feed a solar fire and it grows hotter. Burns. Consumes.
She repeats the mantra until she drifts away.
When her eyes opens, she sees a candle. One singular light against the darkness all around her.
“What can one light do,” A warped voice asks, “When faced with such overwhelming darkness?”
The question is rhetorical, she thinks. The Warlock commits the sight to memory and chooses to observe. She approaches the candle hovering in midair before her.
“The Light lives in all places, in all things.”
Miyu repeats the words. Somewhere. She thinks she’s heard this somewhere.
“You can block it, even try to trap it,” It continues, “But the Light WILL find its way.”
There is a pause, as the candle’s light grows, crackling and spitting as the flames give way to a roaring fire. The twisted voice softens, and the flames consume her but do not hurt. It has been so long since the fire of her Light has not burned.
“Even in you, though broken you may seem.”
Her eyes flash open and Ghost is hovering in front of her, looking concerned. “You were mumbling,” He says. “You never mumble when you meditate. What-”
Miyu’s chest heaves as her eyes widen, her words rushing out quietly. “I think I... had a vision.”
“You what?” Ghost stares at her. “About what?”
“The Light,” His Guardian says, voice low but giddy. “Candles. Bonfires. It’s - I don’t know how to explain it.”
“We should talk to Ikora,” The small AI tells her. “She will know what to-” Ghost shrugs his shell and groans. “You’re shaking your head no. Why are you shaking your head no?”
“I don’t - She isn’t who I want to talk to about this,” Miyu whispers. “Can we talk to Zavala instead? He said he’d answer my questions, anyway.”
Ghost bobs up and down, thinking. “I suppose… but, if he suggests talking to Ikora, you should.”
Miyu scoffs. “You know he will.”
“I do,” Ghost agrees. “But there’s no reason why you shouldn’t get both of their opinions, right?” He understands and agrees with her reservations about Ikora, but there’s no doubt that she is the most knowledgeable person in the Tower and best equipped to discuss this with his Guardian. “If you don’t agree with her, that’s fine, Yu-mi. But you should hear her out. She is your Vanguard.”
“Fine,” The Warlock agrees, reluctantly.
A small drone and a flash of light alerts them to the presence of another Ghost. “Hi,” She says, in a child-like, sweet voice as she swivels to regard them both. “Zavala wanted me to let you know that he’s been called away. He said that you should check in with him later, if you have a moment. When I figure out when he also has a moment,” She says in a child’s version of sarcasm,” I’ll ping your Ghost.”
Miyu nods, a bit caught off guard by the tone of the rather formidable man’s Ghost. She’d expected it to be an icy, frigid female, or a similarly reserved male. Instead of voicing such a thought, the Warlock simply insists, “That is fine.” The Ghost spins and prepares to transmat back to her Guardian in reply. “Um, Ghost, I-” The little bot turns back to her, single eye blinking curiously. “Thank him for me, please. This was helpful.”
“I will!” She chirps, bobbing excitedly as she departs.
When she’s gone, Miyu’s partner says, “Huh. That was not what I was expecting.”
“Me neither,” The Warlock agrees.

[37] Glitch in the System - Lost & Found
By K.
Tentacles happen. _ Despite its reputation as the world’s foremost authority on unpredictable acts of insurrection, day-to-day life for even the most elite of Talon’s operatives was shockingly mundane given its organizational ethos. While the events which bookended individual deployments were suitably chaotic, the days between them were less so. Barring any exceptional circumstance or need for debriefing, the inner council left its constituency well enough alone, their expectation that each agent perform their due diligence regarding physical and tactical training providing structure to their days.
As such, routine was the ironic norm. In addition to establishing considerable predictability, it meant that when something was out of place, it was almost immediately apparent to everyone. What “something” was could be anything: an employee, a case report or dossier, weapons, tech. For those working and living in closer quarters, it was often the most inconsequential of everyday objects.
“What’s this?”
One such object appeared without fanfare, unheralded and unremarkable in absolutely every way but for its  location. Left anywhere else, its presence would be anything but suspect; in fact, many would welcome it with curiosity, if not excitement.
Children and adults the world over adored Pachimari, after all. Its image was practically ubiquitous, right alongside those of Rikimaru’s various mascots and even Hana Song. But what a palm-sized, stuffed version of the famous tentacled onion was doing on the kitchen table of Talon’s Venetian headquarters was as much a mystery as it was a thematic non-sequitur.
Gabriel stood before the toy, his midnight excursion for junk food interrupted by its baffling existence. Though it was fundamentally harmless, he couldn’t help but entertain the instinctual suspicion it aroused
“Strange,” he muttered, tugging idly at his goatee as he racked his brain in search of the operative who’d be so childish as to purchase the thing, nonetheless leave it in a communal space. His mental rolodex proving fruitless, he considered a different, more harrowing reason for the toy’s placement.
Picking it up in scarred hands, Reaper turned the plaything over and over, appraising it with pointed scrutiny better reserved for fresh recruits. As he ran his fingers along its surface, he searched for any signs of tampering: sewn patches inconsistent with the rest of its craftsmanship; unnecessary seams; strange scents or, worse, ticking. Toys, after all, were a common plant for both explosives and illicit substances, and Gabriel was renowned for being a man disinclined toward easily-earned trust.
His review lasted  less than two minutes. Finding nothing, he returned the plush to its original spot on the tabletop, its pristine off-white and kelly green a marked contrast to the dark oak and the looming void of night filling the estate’s corridors.
“Fucking stupid,” he growled at last, pulling the hood of his sweatshirt more tightly about his neck before turning his attention to the refrigerator.
Widowmaker found it the next morning, pausing in the kitchen doorway beside Sombra to level a critical eye on the stuffed toy. Sombra, hardly awake and far from functional, only acknowledged the sniper’s questioning glance with a yawn.
“Is this yours?” the taller woman asked, padding lightly across the room toward the item in question. When no answer came, she scooped it off the table and turned back to her colleague, head canted in silent reiteration. It certainly seemed like something the hacker would own, and of the agents stationed in Venice with on-site living quarters, Widowmaker couldn’t think of anyone else who might.
Blinking against the heavy cling of sleep, Sombra shook her head. “Nah. S’cute, though.”
“It still has a tag,” the assassin observed as her partner began to drowsily rifle through cabinets in search of the requisite ingredients for breakfast.
“He gonna’ help you make these pancakes?” Sombra asked over one shoulder.
Widowmaker sighed in a shadow of annoyance. “Still with the pancakes?” she asked. Setting the plush aside, she joined the shorter woman at the counter to assist with the procurement of certain ingredients placed further overhead: flour, baking powder, and vanilla extract.
“Jeez, spider. Why all the pancake-hate?”
Turning the bottle of extract over to check its use-by date, the sniper shrugged. “They’re just so terribly American.”
Sombra chuckled at Widowmaker’s nigh-tangible derision, laughing even as she shooed her away from her workspace. She grabbed the little Pachimari en route, tracing the embroidered lines of its smiling face with her thumbs as the sniper set to washing her hands. “You gonna’ keep this thing?” she asked after a spell.
Widowmaker’s sole response was a sideways glance that declined the suggestion more loudly than words ever could, one eyebrow cocked in the most vociferous incredulity she could muster. As she reached for the hand towel hanging off the oven door railing, however, a single flicker of thought crossed her mind: an idea as asinine as it was uncomfortably amusing and, either way, bound to bear interesting fruit. “Actually.”
Sombra blinked. “Actually?”
“I have a better idea.”
The hacker inclined her chin expectantly. “Go on.”
“I am bringing it with me to see Moira.”
Sombra’s delighted peal of laughter was interrupted only briefly by the cheery, artificial squeak the stuffed onion produced when she squeezed it incidentally. Its chirp lit up the kitchen anew — a small, innocent blip on the radar of the world’s most feared terrorist organization The contrast wasn’t lost on either of them, and even Widowmaker couldn’t help the bemused chuckle that slipped past her lips.
“She’s gonna’ shit,” Sombra grinned. “You have to tell me about it.”
Nodding her agreement, Widowmaker tossed the towel across the counter to her partner and set to work. “I will deliver a full report.”
Though it didn’t alter the cold war of their rapport, Widowmaker acknowledged that Moira’s begrudging directive she return to a modified training regimen was offered with the implicit understanding the sniper’s initial weeks of recovery had been miserable. The geneticist offered no outward indication the alternating routines of intense physical therapy and endurance training were anything but standard, yet the fact their work often ran well over the scheduled handful of hours indicated something like consideration, if not a shadow of sympathy.
That said, there was nothing easy about the work given her. Despite Widowmaker’s commitment to reclaiming mastery over her own body and Moira’s willingness to facilitate it, the increments by which the doctor increased the difficulty for her patient were broad. This was the norm, and had always been the norm: Moira, pushing each agent to the extremes of their ability while they, in turn, pushed to meet that expectation out of some combination of spite and muted professional detestation.
It was Hell, but it worked. The nanotechnology that expedited healing was of remarkable benefit, reducing what would in decades past have been months of recovery to fewer than one. But the actual work - the hours of alternating sprints and distance runs, of acrobatics and weight training and aerial silks and climbing - was entirely Widowmaker’s responsibility.
“Excellent,” Moira murmured, waving the sniper down from below as she, one leg crooked around a length of silk, hung suspended from the ceiling above. With a few, deft adjustments, Widowmaker followed the scientist’s cue, tumbling with controlled grace to a few feet above the ground. “If only everyone we kept on retainer were quite so determined.”
“‘Retainer’ is not entirely honest,” the assassin sniffed.
“Regardless,” Moira continued, waving off her commentary as if it were some irritating gnat, “you are cleared for active duty. I would recommend you spend some time with your rifle, but I doubt you need my encouragement. I will apprise Akande of your progress.”
“Merci,” Widowmaker replied, watching coolly as the taller woman terminated their conversation by stalking wordlessly toward the console against the far wall of the room. Assuming her departure as dismissal, the sniper stooped to pick up the small collection of belongings she brought: water bottle, towel, and, beneath it, the Pachimari plush she and Sombra discovered earlier that morning. Draping the towel over her shoulders, she glanced about the facility in search of a drop point. The whole thing was excessively silly, but placement was absolutely crucial.
“Amélie. One more thing,” Moira rejoined, turning on her heel suddenly. “The recoil on your rif— what the bloody hell is that?”
Glancing between the toy in her hand and the doctor before her, Widowmaker froze for precisely one second, and, thinking as quickly as possible, hung her head in mock mourning of a surprise well-thwarted. “A thank you,” she said, perfectly straight-faced as she approached the other woman. “I am an abysmal patient.”
Without so much as another word, she leveraged Moira’s flabbergasted silence as an opportunity to deposit the wayward toy in her free hand, turn on her heel, and move with mechanical precision toward the exit. As the doors whispered open, she heard Moira’s voice, weighted with uncertainty, behind her:
“…the recoil on your rifle may aggravate your shoulder…”
Then:
“These idiots.”
True to Moira’s prediction, Widowmaker spent the rest of the day outside, reacquainting herself with the Widow’s Kiss while Sombra logged hit/miss percentiles at the sniper’s request. Doubly true was the doctor’s warning that the rifle’s recoil, normally so innocuous - comforting, even - grew irritating with time as the butt stock hit the still-tender shoulder that only a few weeks ago had been firmly dislocated.
“Damn,” the she hissed, pressing ungloved fingertips against the nexus of joint and socket as she switched the gun to her off-hand.
Waving her holoscreen out of existence, Sombra sidled up beside the other woman, looping an arm about her waist. “Call it a day. There’ll be more angry holographic men for you to murder tomorrow.”
“Probably for the best,” Widowmaker admitted, allowing the hacker to lead her up the graduating stairs toward one of the estate’s many entrances. Warmth greeted them beyond the threshold, immediately easing the hacker’s shaky grip as they traversed the network of halls toward the westernmost wing serving as their living quarters.
“You give Moira that thing?” Sombra asked, glancing up to meet the taller woman’s eye from the corner of her own.
“I did,” she replied. “It was sufficiently uncomfortable.”
“For you?”
“For everyone,” Widowmaker said, trying and failing to suppress the smile threatening the corner of her mouth. As Sombra’s chuckle began to give way to some further inquiry, they turned the corner toward the hacker’s room and ran, almost bodily, into Gabriel. The man’s expression was unreadable - somehow removed from his usual, passive scrutiny and irritation. On anyone else, it may have read as muted delight; on him, it seemed like discomfort. Widowmaker recognized it well and immediately as his default expression of  lukewarm amusement.
“What?” she asked suspiciously, eyes narrowed.
Shrugging broad shoulders, Reaper merely cast a long glance over his shoulder, as if expecting some shadow other than his own to follow. “Nothing.”
“You are making that face.”
“What face?”
“The face you make when something is funny.”
Sombra glanced between the two of them, brows raised. “Jefe?”
Shaking his head, Gabriel only shouldered past them with a grunt.
“Everyone here is fucking weird,” Sombra murmured at the exact second Akande turned the far corner, hands curled around a small, white and green object.
“How convenient,” he said, stopping before them. “Just who I needed to see.”
The silence that attempted residency between the three of them never had a chance against Sombra’s gleeful cackle. Akande, stifling his own smirk, averted his gaze to the object in his hands.
“Lacroix,” he began, voice broken by the faint lilt of laughter trying to break through. “Is this yours?” He unfolded his hands with the question, revealing the smiling face of the mysterious Pachimari.
“No,” Widowmaker replied tonelessly. “It is Moira’s.”
Snickering, Doomfist shook his head. “Moira, it seems, finds its presence particularly distracting” he said. “Which, frankly, I think is her way of saying she liked it but doesn’t have a place for it.”
“Like everything she likes,” Sombra murmured beneath her breath - a statement both Akande and Widowmaker seemed perfectly capable of acknowledging without actually acknowledging it via an exchange of glances.
“I think it’s prudent I return this to you for the time being,” he continued, proffering the stuffed creature with a degree of delicacy that seemed infinitely at odds with the strength he both possessed and embodied “In the future, I recommend scotch if you’re in need of a gift for Doctor O’Deorain.”
Before Widowmaker could even think of accepting the toy, Sombra scooped it deftly into her arms. “Gosh, araña. How thoughtful,” she grinned. “Just what I always wanted.”
Shaking his head, Akande simply stepped aside and allowed them to continue on their way. “Thoughtful, isn’t she?” he smirked.
“Shut up.” Widowmaker replied, waving him a lazy goodbye.

Back in the Super Bowl, Tom Brady and the Patriots can't escape Donald Trump
The New England Patriots have gone to the Super Bowl each year that Donald Trump has been president, and with his favorite team in the championship again this year, the president’s relationship with the Pats and star quarterback Tom Brady is back in focus.
Trump has repeatedly hailed the Patriots as “winners,” touted his friendly relationship with Brady, team owner Robert Kraft and head coach Bill Belichick and has even suggested as a candidate and president-elect that they supported his presidency. He has also dined with Kraft at his Mar-a-Lago Club in Florida.
Congratulations to Bob Kraft, Bill Belichick, Tom Brady and the entire New England Patriots team on a great game and season. Will be a fantastic Super Bowl!

Brady’s ‘MAGA’ moment
When asked about his relationship with Trump, Brady has largely been evasive, but amid ongoing speculation about Brady’s political leanings, fans have continued to tie the Patriots to Trump.

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady chats with Donald Trump at the WBC Lightweight Title Fight, June 25, 2005.
In Sept. 2015, Brady was spotted with a “Make America Great Again” hat in his locker. He was also known to have golfed with Trump before the business mogul became president.
During an 2015 interview on the Dennis and Callahan Interview Morning Show on Boston sports radio station WEEI, Brady confirmed that the hat was indeed from Trump.
“Now that he’s running for president he sent me a hat and he gave it to RKK weeks ago,” Brady said, calling the team owner by his initials. “So it found its way to my locker.”
“I’ve known [Trump] since 2002 when I judged one of his beauty pageants … so I’ve known him for a long time,” Brady added. “He always gives me a call and different types of motivational speeches at different times.”
Thank you to Tom Brady, Coach Ditka, Coach Bobby Knight and all of the many champions that have been so supportive!

Last week, actor Daniel Radcliffe — most known for his film role as “Harry Potter” but also a notable NFL fan — told Variety that although he doesn’t think the Los Angeles Rams will defeat the Patriots at Super Bowl LIII in Atlanta Sunday, he is rooting for the Rams “because the whole world is rooting against the Patriots, sorry.”
Asked if Brady should retire, Radcliffe said, “no,” but “he should just stop winning things.”
Then he cited Brady’s relationship to Trump:
“Take that MAGA hat of your locker! I feel like that was the moment where as a country, we were all like c’mon dude … you’re awesome, we’re behind you, don’t put that in there.”
Trump fuels the fire
Amid continued backlash from fans over the “MAGA” hat and a constant stream of questions about his politics, Trump put Brady and the Patriots back in the spotlight, announcing a day before the 2016 general election that Brady and Belichick are supporting his campaign for president while addressing thousands of supporters at a rally.
“Donald, I support you, you’re my friend and I voted for you,” Trump claimed that Brady told him.
Trump also read a letter he said he had received from Belichick, saying, “You’ve proved to be the ultimate competitor and fighter. Hopefully tomorrow’s election results will give the opportunity to make America great again.”
Although Brady did not confirm nor deny the claims at the time, his wife, super model Gisele Bundchen, denied the reports in an exchange on Instagram.
“Gisele I heard you and Tom were backing Trump! Is that true?” one user wrote.
“NO!” Bundchen responded.
Then, while speaking at a pre-inaugural dinner, the president-elect said that Brady and Kraft called to congratulate him for winning the election.
When asked on WEEI’s Kirk and Callahan show in January 2017, Brady did not deny that he called Trump, but appeared to downplay it, saying, “I have called him, yes, in the past. Sometimes he calls me. Sometimes I call him.”
“But, again, that’s been someone I’ve known. I always try to keep it in context because for 16 years you know someone before maybe he was in the position that he was in,” he added. “He’s been very supportive of me for a long time. It’s just a friendship. I have a lot of friends. I call a lot of people.”
A surprise no-show
During the 2017 Super Bowl, which took place two weeks into Trump’s presidency, fans compared the Patriots’ historic comeback against the Atlanta Falcons to Trump’s unexpected win against Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election.
What an amazing comeback and win by the Patriots. Tom Brady, Bob Kraft and Coach B are total winners. Wow!

“What an amazing comeback and win by the Patriots. Tom Brady, Bob Kraft and Coach B are total winners. Wow!” Trump tweeted at the time.
One day after the win, tight end Martellus Bennett told reporters that he would not participate in the traditional White House visit, where the Super Bowl LI champs were set to be honored by Trump.

“Basic reason for me is I don’t feel accepted in the White House. With the president having so many strong opinions and prejudices, I believe certain people might feel accepted there while others won’t,” Bennett said.
And after that, several other players including defensive end Chris Long, running back LeGarrette Blount, defensive tackle Alan Branch and linebacker Dont’a Hightower announced that they would also not attend, with some citing their opposition to Trump.
But everyone wanted to know: What about Brady?
After much speculation, the team’s star quarterback surprised many when he announced on April 19 — the day of the visit — that he would not be joining his teammates at the White House.

Brady cited “personal family matters” and Trump did not publicly comment on Brady’s absence.
“I am so happy and excited that our team is being honored at the White House today,” Brady said in a statement. “Our team has accomplished something very special that we are all proud of and will be for years to come. Thank you to the President for hosting this honorary celebration and for supporting our team for as long as I can remember. In light of some recent developments, I am unable to attend today’s ceremony, as I am attending to some personal family matters. Hopefully, if we accomplish the goal of winning a championship in the future years, we will back on the South Lawn again soon.”
It is not uncommon for players to skips visits to the White House — often citing scheduling issue. In 2015 Brady said that a “family commitment” prevented him from attending the ceremony held by then-President Barack Obama.
Trump’s feud with the NFL
Trump ignited a public war with the National Football League and some of the league’s biggest stars when he slammed black players like former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who routinely took a knee during the national anthem to protest institutionalized racism and police brutality. Trump also lambasted NFL owners for allowing the protests to continue and called on fans to boycott games.
The feud which has been ongoing for two years was sparked at a 2017 rally in Alabama, where Trump suggested that team owners should respond to players who protest and say, “Get that s– of a b—- off the field right now, he’s fired. He’s fired!”
When asked about Trump’s comment in Sept. 2017 during an interview on WEEI’s Kirk and Callahan show, Brady called Trump’s comments “divisive” and voiced support for players who protest.

Members of the New England Patriots kneel on the sidelines during the National Anthem before a game against the Houston Texans at Gillette Stadium on Sept.24, 2017n in Foxboro, Mass.
“Yeah, I certainly disagree with what he said. I thought it was just divisive,” Brady said. “Like I said, I just want to support my teammates. I am never one to say, ‘Oh, that is wrong. That is right.’ I do believe in what I believe in. I believe in bringing people together and respect and love and trust. Those are the values that my parents instilled in me. That is how I try and live every day.”
After hosting the Patriots in 2017, Trump rescinded a White House invitation to last year’s Super Bowl champs, the Philadelphia Eagles, after several players announced that they planned to boycott the visit.
The Philadelphia Eagles Football Team was invited to the White House. Unfortunately, only a small number of players decided to come, and we canceled the event. Staying in the Locker Room for the playing of our National Anthem is as disrespectful to our country as kneeling. Sorry!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 5, 2018
Whoever wins the Super Bowl this year, a question that cannot be avoided is whether they plan to visit the White House.

Living with Walking Depression – When You Can’t Stop Carrying On
The idea of walking depression (sometimes known as smiling depression) captures the experience of those who are able to go on walking, talking and even smiling while feeling depressed. Sufferers may be able to hold down jobs, relationships and family commitments without ever letting on that anything is wrong. This type of depression can be very difficult to diagnose and treat for this reason and the consequences can be severe.
The most recognisable image of a person living with depression is someone who is lethargic and gloomy, perpetually exhausted and frequently bursting into tears. The phrase “nervous breakdown” conjures up the image of a person who has simply stopped working – someone who cannot go on any longer. But what about the people who can go on, no matter how much they are suffering?
“It doesn’t occur to you that something is abnormal”
Award-winning actress Lorraine Bracco found herself suffering from low moods shortly after landing the part of Dr Jennifer Melfi on the hit TV series The Sopranos. “I kept saying, ‘Oh, next week will be better. Next month will be better.’ It’s like walking pneumonia. Instead, it’s walking depression. Or it’s a fever that you have all day long, all the time. I was dead inside.”
However, Lorraine still managed to put up a front in order to look after her kids. “They had clean clothes and a warm meal and a roof over their head but I was missing. My soul was nowhere to be found.”
Singer Billie Myers had a similar experience after the success of her number one single Kiss the Rain. Despite her single’s soaring sales, she found herself increasingly experiencing low moods and anxiety. However, Myers didn’t realise straight away that what she was experiencing was depression. “The doctors tell you it was always present, I just didn’t recognise it,” says the singer. “Your norm is your norm. And therefore it doesn’t occur to you that something is abnormal.”
The singer still managed to live her life without disrupting her hectic schedule. “You can be a functioning depressed person, the same way someone can be a functioning alcoholic,” says Myers. “If I’ve got a press interview or show, it doesn’t matter how I feel, you go in there and you act the part.”
Associate professor of psychiatry at Cornell University, Dr Gail Saltz, believes that people who are especially resilient find it easier to keep going as they don’t know how to seek help. “People are ashamed and they don’t understand [what is happening to them],” she says. She also places an emphasis on the amount of guilt a person may feel about their depression. “Guilt about everything and anything and things that are irrational. They might think, ‘I’m a bad person.’”
Even so, Dr Gail Saltz does not think this way of being is sustainable. “You can put on a face for a certain period of time. When you are severely depressed, you cannot. You really stop functioning.”
How we carry on
So why do some people find that they can keep getting out of bed day after day even while feeling so bad? There may be several answers to this. Firstly, some people may not be able to admit their experience due to feelings of embarrassment. “Sometimes [a patient] may tell you, ‘No, I’m not depressed’ – and they smile. But it’s a sad smile,” says London psychiatrist Dr Cosmo Hallstrom. Feeling that you must hide how you feel can contribute to worsening symptoms and decreased energy yet individuals with Walking Depression may find this preferable to fears of being judged by friends and family.
Then there are individuals who simply do not recognise that what they are experiencing is depression. These may be people who have never recognised a difference in how they feel day by day or have experienced a very gradual onset of low moods. Head of information at Mind, Bridget O’Connell, recognises that lack of knowledge may be a factor in Walking Depression. “The recognised symptoms of depression tend to be crying a lot, feeling lethargic, perhaps not even being able to get out of bed. But not everyone with depression displays these symptoms.”
Other sufferers may know that they are depressed or even have received a diagnosis but do not want to discuss how they are feeling with anyone. “People have this idea of themselves as a functioning, successful person who fits in and they worry about losing that image,” says Marjorie Wallace, chief executive of mental health charity Sane.
It may also cause mixed feelings in a functioning individual to admit that they are depressed. “It feels presumptuous to put yourself in that category when you’re still getting by,” says writer and life coach Alison Gresik on her blog. “You feel like it would be insulting to those who are much worse off than you.”
There can be practical concerns involved with disclosing information about mental health. According to survey Stigma Shout, conducted by Rethink in 2008, 9 out of 10 respondents living with mental health issues reported that stigma had had a negative impact on their lives. The effect of stigma can impact on areas of life such as employment, friendships, activities and having the personal confidence to enjoy life. Respondents reported that their friends, neighbours and colleagues had treated them negatively after disclosing details of their health. With the threat of being excluded or bullied by others, people who suffer from Walking Depression may simply feel they have no choice but to keep going.
Do you have walking depression?
If you are finding it hard to enjoy life and experiencing frequent low moods, you could be living with Walking Depression. Here are some pointers to help you decide.
You’re not enjoying anything
If you can’t remember the last time that you truly enjoyed something, it could be a sign of depression. Likewise, if you find it hard to find things to look forward to, it might be an indicator that something is off-balance.
Your energy is low
You might be able to keep going but just barely. Your energy levels are just as good an indicator of your health whether you are still keeping to a daily schedule or not.
You frequently feel irritated or angry
When we squash how we feel on a regular basis, it becomes harder to control our emotions when they rise to the surface. Experiencing bursts of anger or irritation which seem out of proportion to what you are experiencing could be a sign there is something deeper at stake.
You tell yourself ‘I can’t’
People who live with Walking Depression fear changing their routine too much in case they have to face how bad they normally feel. If you are frequently turning down enjoyable activities or finding excuses not to take a break, you could be feeling that you must carry on against the odds at all costs.
How to walk away from depression
Singer Billie Myers eventually managed to pull herself out of her Walking Depression with the help of her friends. “They dragged me to a psychiatrist. I was very unwilling. I thought that I was fine. He basically told me that I was incredibly depressed and I could continue to be that way or work at being better.” Myers felt grateful for the support of her friends during her depression who she described as being “really great” despite her negativity and lethargy. “I could turn somebody telling me I’d won a lottery into a disaster. You lose a lot of friends when you’re like that. Friendship is a two-way street.”
As well as gaining support from friends, other sufferers report that talking-based therapies have also helped them to cope. Marketing consultant Alison Cowan told Mail Online that Cognitive Behavioural Therapy had helped to support her through her depression. “I used to think I had to hide things away,” says Alison. After the therapy, for the first time I felt able to honestly talk about how I felt.”
Writer Alison Gresik also advocates reaching out to others for support. “Therapists aren’t the only people you can talk to,” she says. “Seek out people you can be authentic with and spend time with them. Join an online class or community. Reducing your isolation will erode your unhappiness.”
Gresik also suggests that Walking Depression is a consequence of being deeply unhappy with how you are living your life. “You face a decision: Will you do something about your unhappiness, or will you allow it to continue?” says Gresik. “I appreciate the importance of accepting what we can’t change. But what really fires me up is changing the things we can, and finding the wisdom to know the difference.

People are strange........
I’ve been meaning to get back on here and just say whats on my mind and so im going to start with the interesting world of people and us as humans. Some of this may not make any sense to anyone and thats ok but for me, i like to just talk and see what happens.
But before i get to where i am now with people,i sort of have to go back to where my thoughts on people sort of changed over the years......
November 4th 2011 and i lost my dad in one of the most horrific traffic collisions to happen in the UK. The first 3 to 4 years from that were hell and i can easily admit that. From that day my whole life was turned upside down and changed. Going through court cases, enquiries, the press hunting you down, people either being there for you or not being there at all. Something like that effects people differently. I’ve seen the best in people over the years and I've also seen the worst for whatever reasons. But my attitude to people has changed since then and continues to do so.
With all that going on as well i also went through a real shitty relationship with a right bastard. Im not sorry for saying that either as he really was. He was a narcissistic wanker who took full advantage of me going through some real shit stuff to then being his punching bag. Thankfully only mentally but the damage was done and its taken me a few years to get over such a person who treats another person like shit. When you are one minute made to feel like the most important person in the world to then the shit on the bottom of someones shoe,oh boy does it mess you up. But saying that, the best thing that asshole ever did was end it with me and F off somewhere up north. He will forever be a F up and continue to abuse people/woman because he is just pure evil and will never get help for his many many issues and will NEVER be happy and that tbh makes me happy, but of course i dont think about that waste of breath anymore, but soon it’ll be i think 5 years since he ended it and i got away from all that bs and i could not be happier. Yeah sure i had to start from scratch mentally on myself as that f***er took every bit of confidence i had in me and destroyed me, but i can now at least say i have never been happier.
With becoming happier and more confident again i see the attitudes and responses i get from people. After dealing with a narc my view on people, male or female is well lets say guarded i guess. If you know me well enough, you’ll know i’ll talk to anyone about anything, but for me it takes me a while to make sure whoever this person is,is a good person and actually will have a positive vibe for me to go with. That might sound crazy and like ‘’Wtf kim you cant judge people like that’’ but actually i can. Its a simple thing of i dont have time for bull shitters, attention seekers, time wasters, two faced assholes, backstabbers etc. Within a short space of time i make up my mind about people pretty quickly on if i want to spend more time with them or not,and its shame we live in world where people get so bloody upset by this notion. Its simple really. If i think you are an idiot or not someone i want to spend my time with then i wont and there is nothing wrong in that. Relationships will always facinate me and amuse me because my life is so different from others. Example point - Actually being someone again. I am very independent nowadays and tbh for anyone to try and break through that then bloody good luck lol But i am single by choice because i do actually really love being on my own but also i know deep down i cant commit to anyone due to being a full time carer to my mum. If anyone special came into my life they would have to deal with being second best as my family come first and foremost before anything else. If they can deal with maybe seeing me once or twice every few weeks and stuff like that then go for it. But i dont think there is many people that could deal with my lifestyle. I am use to the crazy of it but its wrong to ask others to be in my life with all that i have on. Yeah sure i’ve met some wonderful people i thought maybe it might work out with but sadly it was not meant to be and im ok with that as they are still very dear friends to me.
This may sound crazy too but i have rules,as it were, when it comes to people/social media things like that. Now yes social media to me can be a blessing and a curse. I have all sorts of pros and cons over the years of it,but normally sadly it does come down to the stupid people on the other end of it. One example of many. So i go to a lot of comic cons and have done since 2015 when i first met Matt Ryan at Wales comic con and fell in love with the Assassins Creed games. Since then i have been so lucky to meet a few of the Va’s of the games from older to newer games and continue to do so and also support them in any other work they also do. Anyway coming back to social media and at cons if there is an AC guest there i will,if i can try and get said guest(s) involved in AC cosplay meet ups and i have been SO lucky to have had the chance to work with some fantastic VA’s over the years and make it happen. Sometimes i’m not even holding the meet up myself but the VA has asked me if its ok to go along and i take them which im so so humbled by. But anyway back to the example of idiots and social media. Before the last AC game come out,i had taken a little time away from gaming all together due to home life taking a more important role to play that needed my time and attention. Now any normal human being would actually understand this and respect this but i did try and keep people posted on any cons and events the AC cast were appearing at. I was in one AC group that sadly was run by some real ego maniacs and people that cant organise a piss up in a brewery and also just very bitter and jealous people when it came to others achieving something in the AC world. Like my god the attitude some of these assholes would show, was just disgusting and it killed my passion and excitement for the new game. They would make fun of cosplayers that had worked bloody hard on their cosplays in the messenger we had set up for the FB page that i was apart of and just talk shit most of the time, and other times not even AC related. But anyone like i said last year was a bloody hard one for me mentally with things going on at home and i had no time or patience for idiots.
Last May just as i was on my way to London MCM i found out on the bus itself, that the game shop i was working in was going to close and i was gutted. Now i had ONLY decided to go to MCM to see the lovely Victoria Atkin and Patrica Summersett who are fantastic ladies in the VA world and have been in many games over the years so having been asked by Vic herself to be there and also part of the meet up that was happening,i got myself a friday and saturday ticket. London mcm is always a manic one but ok if you know where and when you need to get done things like that. The friday was more of a chilled day con wise and time to see Victoria and meet Patricia for the very first time and she was just fantastic! (More on that later) also some other VA’s as well that i hadnt met before or had seen and wanted to catch up with. Now before Vic and Patricia were announced i wasnt actually going to attend but was basically asked to by Vic so should and Patricia could come to the meet up. Great! No problem at all i though.........
I was nervous about telling the idiots in the fb group i was with, that i was going to be bringing along special guests because my god this lot dont have make easy things more bloody difficult. So it was about maybe 3 weeks before London MCM and i dropped in the messages that even though i was being quiet i was catching up when i could and that a guest was going to join us for the meet up. Now this fb group were so bloody anal about who ran meet ups. They always had to be done by someone on the admin/mod team (which i was so against tbh. If people wanted to meet up then bloody well let them) so whilst i was with this group i did mcm birmingham and a couple of wales comic con as i was a mod. I was keeping Vic updated on things once timings and location had been sorted and also to make sure she could come along as well. The time for the meet was basically decided a few days before the meet when the mcm schedules had gone up which was fine, but before this the miserable lot didnt want many people knowing that really this meet was happening. Tbh no one in that sodding group had great social skills as all they ever did was make it more stressful then it needed to be. On the years i didnt go,so many people told me how messed up the meets were and lots of shouting ect went on and tbh i wanted none of it. It was my first (and thankfully last) meet up being in that group of last year. Back to no one wanting people to know about it. Their reasoning's were they didnt want every tom dick and harry to come along unless they were in the AC group, they didnt really want anything on social media said about it either but i was very against that as Vic was so good at letting people know when meet ups were happening on twitter and instagram so that more people could join in on the fun and rightly bloody so too! So anyway the day of the con and the admin decide to change the sodding location of the meet so they think less people will turn up from where they normally have it. Bad move as that would later unveil. So i am at the event on the saturday and im messaging Vic to say about the new details and she is sharing away as well so thats fine by me she can do what she likes. Anyway on the saturday before the meet, there was a AC panel with Vic and Patricia and it was great and really fun and right at the end Vic announces that the meet up was happening right after the panel and to come along and follow me and two of my friends. I wont lie this next bit looked amazing haha. So the girls come off the stage and then Patricia asks me if its ok to come along which of course i say yes more then welcome. We wait for security who were fantastic btw,and really enjoyed the walk to the meet up. So at the front of this parade was my two friends in their ezio and jacob frye cosplays, then me in my frye twin mash up holding my prop up so the girls could see me. Then two security guards, then the girls and their handlers and then more security. The way that people moved out of the way for us was just fantastic. It was like parting of the waves and peoples faces were like so in well surprised at what was going on but also followed along to the meet which was cool. Anyway it was a bit of a walk but we soon get to the meet up and i introduce Vic and Patricia to everyone and there was some very happy faces and really lovely people asking me how on earth i keep getting VA’s to come along lol I dont do anything special i just ask them haha. So anyway pictures are done with the girls and cosplayers and its all good fun and they were with us for about 15 mins if that and we did cosplay stuff and also admin/mod photos with the girls too which was fine and social media stuff for the girls as well which was fun. They soon leave and i feel like collapsing to the floor after tbh weeks of stress trying to sort things out and it was a huge relief things went ok for them and i thought everyone else. There was a few omg moments but not to do with me thankfully but it didnt look very well lets say professional and that was bs because the meet had moved and others didnt know so some shit kicked off but yeah that was not my problem to sort.
Anyway i go back into the venue not long after the meet to basically see some folk and also was asked by the girls to swing by again before i left the con as i was only there the friday and saturday due to money and having just lost my job i wasnt in the best of moods but they did help so much. A few days of the con pass and pictures are posted up as usual blah blah but the messages within the group about the meet up are well not great. The vibe i got was basically they werent happy with how Vic was somehow but they werent saying that exactly so i basically said in all the times i’ve met any voice actors and got to work with them there has never been any ego’s or bs just a lot of fun. They didnt really see what i was getting at as i know they didnt get my involvement with who i had worked with so far and were beyond jealous it was so damn easy to see. But yeah their slight digs at Vic pissed me off so again went back to ignoring the messages coming through as it was just all nonsense chat.
Another thing this pathetic group didnt like was other members being in other AC groups and this is what finished it for me cos it got so stupid. Now before the bs happened which i’ll explain next, i am and still in over 30 plus other ac groups or ac cosplay related groups and have done meet ups in other countries ffs so you should not be told who you can and cant do that with. Anyway what happened was a little before MCM London i got asked on twitter by the lovely AC United Kingdom page if i would like to help them out on their social media sites to which of course i said yes. This group have been so amazing to me since they asked me to join and its been a blast with people that are so supportive and love what i do to help promote stuff for VA’s and things like that. I was very honoured to be asked. Anyway the older group found out i was added and also another mod and f*** me did they kick off. When i then explained how i ended up in this group they soon shut up for a while and backed the F off. Now i know the other mod didnt like getting added and thats fine as being added to groups can be annoying so she left the new group i was now apart of as well and thats fair enough. Again i said my piece and left the chat as it was all going back to more rubbish talk.
A few weeks went by and i had saw that the guy who added me to the new AC group i was in was blocked from the old group i was i and i asked why. Oh boy that shit storm hit hard. Because i hadnt been that involved in the group chat or on the fb page they basically started on me which was hilarious to be honest. Now they booted my friend because he was adding their members to his own fb which was a big no no. I had also added members because i asked them if they would like to be apart of it. When i said this they were quiet for a little time and then went on this pity party of ‘’Well it doesnt matter as it seems lots are jumping ship and so we are going to close the group anyway. We’ll keep it open but no more meet ups or anything blah blah blah’’ It was literally like they had a toy taken from them and they were reacting like a shitty child. With that, and watching the melt down this lot were having my last message was something like ‘’well its been nice knowing you all take care’’ and that was it. Soon enough i was booted from that chat and kicked out of the group hahahaha. I was then informed they put a post up about closing the group as people were leaving and they couldnt be bothered with it anymore and just really stupid stuff tbh but they sounded so butt hurt it was unreal. So now comes in one of my rules. The second anyone walks out of my life, that is it for them. I dont chase people or find out answers i just let them do what they got to do and i do my own thing. I then deleted and blocked all of the admin and mods but one off of my fb because i wasnt going to let them kick me out of the group for their tantrum and then think its ok to watch what i do with me life. I dont f***ing think so. The next day a good friend had sent me a pic of one of the admins trying to play the victim card and butt hurt again that they had been removed from my life. Its simple. You walk out you never get the chance to come back or watch what i do. F*** no! So yeah i easily cut stupid people off.
I have other rules too and another is that if i have had no contact with someone on line or on the phone in over 6 months i delete/remove/block them from all my social media and also if their number is in my phone book i delete numbers too. Now tbh this should not need explaining to anyone but here is example two of why people just f*** me off.
Now i get on with anyone and everyone as i said and blokes especially as i’ve always been a bit of a tom boy and so girly girls i dont really get on with. Now i’ve made some great friends from the netherlands the last few years who are just wonderful and mean a lot to me and i will always do my best to go see them if i am over there or if they are going to festivals things like that i will go and support them. Anyway last may something happened at an event which was just blown out of proportion it was unreal. Lets use person A and person B as i dont like to use names. Now person A is from the netherlands and person B is from the UK. I have known for a long time that person B has liked person A and thats fair enough. Person A is still a great friend of mine and person B is no more. Now then at an event last year i got a little drunk with person A and it was a good laugh. Whilst walking together i happened to trip over something and my friend caught me and then heald my hand to help me walk as i was pretty drunk. That was nice of him. Now then at the same time this happened person B saw this happen and knowing the sort of person they are (a complete and utter immature asshole btw) i then get a message from a outside person saying i was a bad friend because i know how person B likes person A and what i was playing at blah blah blah. I laughed at the message as it really was BS and replied politely the event that had happened with the falling over and also hello im gay so back the fuck off im not interested in person A. Said messenger soon backed off and that was it. Thankfully i didnt see said messenger rest of the event. But anyway there was no need for that. What happened was a laugh between two friends nothing more nothing less.
Event ends and everyone goes their own way and back home and funny enough Person B does not really talk to me much after and tbh i didnt care. Yes i get they liked person A but ffs grow up and maybe ask what happened before getting someone else to fight your battles for you. I think it took a few weeks before i heard from them and they were still in a piss when they really had no right to be and left it at that. Move on about 3 months and i knew what was coming and it was the usual messages of ‘’Oh im so sorry for being a tit back then it was so silly of me blah blah blah hope we are ok’’ i explained to person A that i had no bad will towards them at all and its all over and done with and forget it and move on.No problem at all. That was the last time i heard from person A. Going back about 8 months now.....bare that in mind......
Now last November i went to the Netherlands for a gig and to see person B and his new gf who i had got to know over the internet. They had taken me in for a few days and it was lovely before i went to amsterdam. Now when i got back to the uk i did a instagram post saying thank you to my friends for a great time. I was scrolling through fb not even an hour after my post and i saw a shitty post from person A saying ‘’Oh looks like i’ll have to take some people off of my fb as i dont want to see things like that as they hurt’’ and some other bs. I knew instantly this was aimed at me and low and behold the next day after their fb post i was taken off of their instagram. Why you ask? Well because i had had a lovely time with my friend and his new gf!!!. This was now also 6 months after the BS at the said event before as well. FFS get over person B already as its been 6 bloody months and you knew he also had a sodding mrs and no interest in you and you didnt even talk that much. I get it feelings for someone can mean so much but to be so petty against someone else because they hung out with your crush and their new gf is f***ing stupid! So there comes into my rule of if you walk away from me or out of my life in anyway you do not get to see what i am up to anymore so i blocked person A from my instagram after that immature bs and at that time also muted them on fb as i no longer wanted to see the shit they were posting. Xmas and new year comes and goes and no messages. Not a problem i had already moved on with my life.
Same event comes around this year where shit kicked off last year but this year i didnt go. I knew plenty of folk that did and are in the same clicky group and noticed person A was hardly in much pictures which i thought was amusing tbh as they are all such attention seekers. So i went onto Person A’s fb page and saw that i had been removed from their fb page. Fair enough i thought not a problem at at all since it had been 8 months since we talked and they had already walked out in one way so the trash took itself out which was perfect for me. Again i had no problem with this due to their behaviours before hand and also i had moved on so didnt care. So with that and knowing how creepy they are on social media i block them as well. Done and dusted i thought.........
A few weeks ago i suddenly get messages from person A (comes up as unknown number on the app it was on but i knew who it was) asking if i had taken them off of my social media and why. I didnt reply to the message as i feel  no explanation is needed for such a thing. Life moves on and people grow apart its pretty normal tbh. So anyway another week goes by and i get another message asking the same thing but this time less jokey about it and more demanding. I ignore and delete the messages again. Another few days goes by and the third message is 1) damn creepy 2) proves my point on how crazy they are. The message basically said person A can see me on another accounts i have and so know i am online still and that they have talked to other people about things and they have said to let it go but they cant do that because they want answers. I literally lol to this message because it was just so needy and whiny but also damn creepy. Ffs who watches someone else from other accounts to see if they get a reaction or not?! Like grow up but the main thing that actually pissed me off about this was the pure nerve this person had to ask for answers when they were the first one to walk away many months back. Now did i go to them asking questions and why? No i did not as i dont care and still dont. Yet here is person A demanding to know why i have blocked them?! F*** right off. Again it comes back to you do not walk out of my life and expect to then keep an eye on me. Thats just all sorts of messed up and their messages just proves how f***ing crazy they are for checking up on me other profiles. If i could find these profiles i would block them too but tbh i dont care. I am happy and living my life. But how f***ing dare anyone demands to know anything from me when they f***ed off first. Not going to happen. I am hoping person A soon gives up and just leaves me alone but time will tell. If i get one more message i will then block them from what app they have contact me on.
You may wonder why i’ve wanted to rant about this and i’ll tell you why. The last few weeks i have got friends who have gone or going through life changing things. One has brain cancer and has maybe 2 years to live, another her ovarian cancer has come back and dont know the full scale yet and another a family member went through something horrific and its made me stop and think about life in general. I knew that life was short after i lost my dad but with all this happening and also more going on its made me think that again and gone bloody hell you never know what will happen to you. It makes you think about the important stuff and things that actually are important and not the BS of social media and things like that. I want my life to be filled with good people that are there for me and also support and love me for what id do. Not whiny pathetic people that moan about sweet f*** all when they should be more thankful for what they do have. I dont have time for people that have no positive effect on my life anymore. I wanted to be lifted up not heald back. I want to be pushed forward, not worried about other peoples opinions.
So now i am taking time out from a things again for my well being and looking forward to the future :-D

Stolen car question about police & insurance company?
Is it common for police and insurance companies to request some very private personal information when a car is stolen from private property? The vehicle is 100% paid off, 6 yrs old, not worth more than $10,000. The owner and driver both have significant savings, no debt and also own (outright) more cars than we have drivers. The insurance company asked me questions while recording part of the session and asked for my personal cell phone records as part of the investigation. Can I refuse such a request. Auto Insurance Question: Please help!!!!!?
I asked this yesterday too, but did not get any responses; so if you have any information at all, or this has happened to you, please list an answer! I just recently lost my beautiful 1977 Monte Carlo to a fire! It was all original, and the adjuster found it to be worth between $12,000 and $13,000. Due to my ignorance of insurance, we were put into a stated value insurance policy worth $6,000, and now, I am only getting $6,000 for my car. I feel ripped off. I am young, and don't know anything about insurance, but trusted my agent. The car has been in my family and was gifted to me from my dad a little less than one year ago. My agent asked for photos, and a letter from my parents with what they thought the worth of the car was, signed saying it was a gift. So, that's what we gave him. They stated in the letter they paid $6000 for it 8 years ago. We were never told to get the car appraised, or that we had to keep up on checking to see if the value had gone up so we could change our policy. Do any of you have any advice on how I can get the insurance company to give me all the money? Is there anything I can do at all? Thank You so much!""

How much should a car cost? Really.?
Just from some light browsing on the internet, it seems like they (the advertisers/car manufacturers) want us to believe that $30k is a reasonable median cost for a new car in the U.S. The price goes up disporportionately if they can call it a 'crossover' or the holy grail: SUV!!! $$$$$$$$ Assuming a person makes around $50k a year gross/ $30k a year net (is that a reasonable assumption for the U.S.?), and assuming the car will be worth close to $0 in 5 years, a $30k car works out to be around 20% of his or her income, not including gas repairs insurance et cetera. Is this reasonable? Is it sustainable? Are we heading for a 'correction' in auto pricing? or is the plan that we all just use financing tricks to perpetuate these exhorbitant prices?""

What is the difference between being forced to buy health insurance vs. being forced to buy car insurance?
In my state we are forced to have car insurance or we will be fined. I know that having the government intervene more in our health insurance seems like more of a step in a socialism direction but were we already going that direction anyway with car insurance AND we did already have medicare and medicaid. This reform does not seem like anything more than insurance reform and medicare/medicaid reform. It is not as radical as it could be: http://healthreform.kff.org/SubsidyCalculator.aspx The government subsidies are not even that good. People making around 30-50k still have to pay $200-300 a month for healthcare and now they are actually being FORCED to do it no matter what. The government will only help with $500 per year of that total bill. I am a conservative...BUT why is this so bad? Dont we really need healthcare reform because the way it is going it looks like in 10 more years nobody will be able to afford insurance period if things were left the way they were (it has gone up 100% in the last 10 years). Change can be good sometimes. Everyone needs to calm down.

A question about insurance on a car?
ok i live in england, and i am 27yrs old, i drive and have my own insurance which is fully comp, as i am over 26 i can drive any car third party, my boyfriend is just starting to learn to drive and since neither of his parents drive, hes going to have to get his own car with his own insurance on, which is obviously going to be quite high as hes a new driver, hes 20yrs old. we got told that if he put me on his insurance as a second driver then it would work out a bit cheaper for him, but im wondering if this is true, as i can drive his car anyway on my insurance, so im not sure if its legal to go on his or if they will let me. any advice would be appreciated.""
How can you add an illegal alien to your car insurance? Where?
I have a girlfriend who happens to be an illegal alien. I am a legal U.S. citizen living in California. She owns a car (under someone elses name) and the time is coming when she will have to go to the DMW and reregister it. She wants to transfer the ownership to me but still drive it herself, which I will have no problem with as long as she agrees to pay all costs associated with using the vehicle (an agreement I will get in writing). However, she dosn't want to give her information to any insurance companies because shes afraid the Feds will find her out and deport her back to Mexico. Is their any way I can buy an insurance policy for my new car and add her to the coverage without giving the insurance company her name and and other information? Say, some policy that covers me and any other driver that happens to use the vehicle? If so, what company should I sign up with?""

Car insurance stuff i don't understand.?
Hello everyone, I am an international student who's been in the USA (Buffalo, NY) for the past 2 years working hard on my masters (i'm 25 now). I bought a POS Saturn last year for 2000 dollars and, well, for that i needed to get car insurance since it's mandatory in this country. Since i was from abroad and i had a learner's permit at the time, i had to get insurance with my international license. Progressive was my only choice so i paid around 700$ for 6 months. That's the rate I've been paying for the last year. Unfortunately, i just don't have the money anymore to pay 700 more dollars for the next 6 months. I tried different insurance companies but they are all around the same range. Apparently, i was stupid enough to not get a credit card as soon as i landed in this country. I was raised with the if you don't have money, don't spend it philosophy so i just used my debit card. This is the only reason that i can see for these absurd rates. Every single one of my friends ( all international students ) pay around 200-250/six months dollars for their pieces of crap cars. I just feel like i'm not being given a fair deal. Not having any credit might put a penalty on me, i understand somewhat how a capitalist mind works... let's say about 100-150 more dollars for 6 months, but a whopping 500 $ ? Don't you think it's kind of messed up that first of all it's mandatory, and then there's no baseline to at least make sure that noone gets ripped off. Is there any way that a person can inquire why he is being charged so much(instead of the bs the agents tell you i.e your area is bad etc.)? Or are you at the mercy of these people?""

Car Insurance Question?
I came to north Carolina at the beginning of August from FL to stay with my aunt while I got my finances in order and she recovered from her back surgery. I plan to stay here until a bit after the new year. When I moved, I arranged to have my mail forwarded while i am here. Also around this time, I started searching for a new insurance provider because my rate had gone up with geico. I decided on progressive. When signing up for progressive, I signed up with my Florida drivers license number and my new nc mailing address. A couple of months later I received a letter from the state of Florida saying that they were notified my geico insurance policy was cancelled and to provide new proof of coverage. I went online and provided the information but apparently made an error when selecting the insurance company name. I accidentally selected protective insurance company instead of progressive. I was made aware of this error when I received a license suspension letter yesterday. Since then I have notified the state of Florida Of the error. I then received notice that my insurance was still not acceptable because Florida requires that if I have a florida registration, i must have a Florida policy. I called my insurance who confirmed that although they provide Florida coverage, I was under a nc policy even though I provided them with a Florida drivers license number since my mailing address was currently nc. I have had no lapse in coverage, but my insurance company cannot switch it back to florida until I am living there again at the beginning of the new year and can provide a valid address of where I will be living. I do not know where I will be living when I get back yet because I will have to find a new place to move into. Does anyone have any advice as to what to do in this situation? When I first moved to FL and transferred my tags, it cost me almost 500 dollars, so if i transfer them to NC for the time being, i will then have to pay 500 dollars again once I go back to FL""

Reflection
hello!
ive gotten a lot done over the past few days and decided to hangout with earl and gongjoo on a whim. and it was really nice and im glad that i got to spend time with them! i was pretty nervous that i would be really scared and skiddish around but i was actually pretty calm. we just went shopping at costco together and then ate dinner there. DAT $1.50 HOTDOG + DRINK DEAL AT COSTCO IS TOO GOOD :’O Gongjoo actually paid for me but it’s just such a good deal man! but yeah, i told them about hyde park and my incident on sunday as a brief update for whats been going in my life and i did really enjoy spending time with them. i figured i would just walk home after costco but they invited me over so i just admired their record player and started figuring out what i need for my apartment next year—both personal and shared. And then we watched an episode of Black Mirror together before I decided to head out for the night around 11:30pm.
but today was pretty productive too! I printed my resume, tho it got crumpled. i checked the times for the computer lab and DPC—both of which i found out were actually open mon-wed :( today was thursday :(
but i revised my graphic design and typography drafts and prepared graphic design for printing. but i cant really easily revise my draft for typography so im waiting for dawn to get back to me on that first. but i do think jilly is actually going to like my revisions! i also needed to learn to bite my tongue bc whenever she replied, i got upset. esp when i misread her e-mail and thought she was just reminding me to fix the text after i just did and not at all acknowledging my other changes. It wasn’t until after the next e-mail that I realized my mistake and apologized and she took it well. Thankfully. I’m pretty happy with my school schedule and I think my resume is a bit messy but I at least want to see if the information is good. I can fix the design later based off of whatever Brian Socall tells me. Tomorrow is Friday, aka the last weekday of my spring break and it’s been really nice just being productive and getting to spend time with myself in thought. I do think I should listen to music less and watch less shows and instead spend more time just thinking about life and my choices and decisions and all that jazz. And hopefully I will tomorrow. Oh, I also watched “Chasing Coral” today and wrote a one paged summary on it for extra credit. And I already finished my culture, race, and media homework a while ago so I’m in pretty good standing at the moment. I just need to WRITE THE DESCRIPTIONS FOR MY PORTFOLIO and solidify my resume and then I can meet with Jo-nell and start applying! :D I haven’t scheduled an appointment with her yet just bc I don’t want to be too ambitious with my deadlines and it’s been going pretty well so far in terms of getting things done. But I don’t want to expect myself to get the same amount of work done once I’m back in school bc I know that I’ll get really busy again. But I think I can manage my time well. And I think I’ll have time for ASO and AiGA next semester too! I just hope it won’t be too overwhelming to do that on top of all my classes and commuting and serving at Lakeview. And of course my job. But we’ll see! I am committed to serving and that’s inevitable and it does look like I’ll be stepping up from ASO. But if I need to step down, I know they’d understand. And I do want to get more involved with AiGA to better build my portfolio and get my foot in the door for design. But I know that whether or not I join, God has a plan and a purpose for me and because of that, serving should be my most important responsibility.
I’m still thinking about whether or not I should go home and that’s definitely something that I should be praying about. Whether or not I pray or read daily shouldn’t even be a question. It should just be routine. But it’s not. I still see it as an individual task instead of as a part of my lifestyle and I should change that.
But, yeah. I also realized that I never chatted with Andrew and Sofia today which was weird and I know that we’re all busy and they’re still in school but I did find it interesting. I just messaged the chat asking how their days went and pushed Andrew for more of a response but it did seem pretty forced. Talking daily isn’t a necessity, it’s just something we happen to do. But they are still busy with classes and work so I understand. I’m sure the chat will be blowing up like crazy next week when they’re on break instead and I’m busy once more.

Wanted – Running group.  Must be supportive and fun loving.  Willing to run early mornings and drink IPA beers after races.  Interested in exploring new routes and suffer through hot, humid days of summer.  Must be willing to sacrifice pace on occasion if group member needs company.  No runner left behind.
Running is very often a one person sport, especially when training for longer distance races.  During my half marathon training last year, I did 100% of the training runs alone.  Partly this was due to the fact that I don’t like the pressure of trying to run at someone else’s pace. I am a slower runner and when I try to run with others I often start to feel bad about myself because I can’t keep up.  I’ve found solace in music and meditation as I run, but it sure would be nice to run with others.  Definitely would make the miles go by faster.
This year as I get ready to begin training for the marathon, I’ve decided to try again to run with others.  Now, I just need to find my tribe – people who run at a pace similar to mine, or are willing to run with me regardless of pace.  I am a member of an online running club and love how supportive this group is.  When I ran my first half marathon, it was with this club.  We all met in the shadows of the steel stacks in Bethlehem, PA for a weekend of running events at the Runners World Festival.  These people were my phone and computer friends, none of which I had ever met in person prior to that weekend.  I must say it was slightly unnerving to attend an event with strangers, but I just knew it was going to be awesome.
Sub30 is a group of runners who share the goal of running a sub 30 minute 5K race.  But, it is so much more than just that.  It is a club that includes people from all over the country.  They share many goals, the most important of which is positivity.  The heart of the group is the ideal that we lift others up and no subber is ever left behind.  During my weekend at the Runner’s World Festival, this running club’s support was incredible to see and receive.  There were people pacing others, sacrificing any PR goals to support another to their goals.  There were people cheering at every race for anyone in the club, strangers or not.  And, there were people near the finish waiting to run in with members of the club, those last steps.  What a true testament this club is to the running community.  It was something so wonderful to experience in person.
With this club experience in mind, I decided this year to try to participate more in my local clubs.  I had joined two last year but never attended any of their group runs or events.  This week I attended my first group meet up with a local running club.  While everyone was friendly enough, I didn’t get the same feel as I did from the Sub30 group.  It just seemed like I went to this event to run alone leaving me wonder if I really needed to drive there to do that.  I will definitely give it another try though.  Perhaps on other evenings there will be others who run at a slightly slower pace.  The whole experience left me wishing my Sub30 crew lived closer and wondering why all clubs don’t embrace the same goals.
I have a second club that I’m a member of which is not quite as local.  It is in Manhattan and they meet up on Saturday mornings.  I get a really good feeling about this running club, but the location makes it more challenging for me to get to.  It’s hard to commit to driving in to Manhattan on Saturday mornings when I generally go to Queens to check in on my parents.  I’m trying to work out the logistics though because I’d love to see how this club operates.
I used to prefer to run solo, but recovering from these last two injuries have left me really struggling to regain my confidence.  I’m afraid of re-injuring myself each time I lace up.  I’m questioning my abilities as I struggle through what used to be so easy for me to do.  I’m wondering when running became so hard and how even though I ran with broken toes all winter I’ve lost so much conditioning.  I know that if I could find a good, supportive tribe I could regain my confidence.  The support of the running community is what I need now to push me through.  Running doesn’t have to be this hard and the energy of others will lift me up.
After struggling to keep up with my training schedule as my injury healed, I have finally decided I cant do this alone anymore.  It’s time I step outside my comfort zone and find a running club, or partner, that I can actually run with on a regular basis.  Going to the local meet up this week was the first step and even though it wasn’t amazing, it won’t be the last.
Do you have a local running club you run with?  How did you find your tribe?  I’d love to hear about how the power of this human connection impacted your journey.  Be sure to leave a comment below.

Happiness Hack: This One Ritual Made Me Much Happier
When my wife and I moved to New York City in 2001, recently graduated from college and newlywed, we were eager to find friends. We knew nearly no one but were sure wed soon find a fun-loving group like the 20- and 30-something New Yorkers who spontaneously dropped in on one another on
We hatched a plan. After moving into our Midtown Manhattan apartment, we invited all the neighbors over for drinks by placing Kinkos-printed quarter-sheets into everyones mailboxes. Then, we waited for our versions of Chandler, Kramer, and Elaine to show up. But they didnt. In fact, no one did. As the ice in the cooler melted and the guacamole browned, not a single person among 100 apartments stopped by. Not. One. Person.
Recalling that episode now, we sound embarrassingly nave. We didnt realize friendships in the real world worked nothing like the ones we had forged in our dormitories, let alone those we saw on television. Yet as it turns out, our desire to belong to a tight community was far from foolish.
Recent studies have shown a dearth of social interaction with people you care about and who care about you not only leads to loneliness, but is also linked to a range of harmful physical effects. In other words: A lack of close friendships may be hazardous to your health.
Dying for Friends
A 2010 meta-analysis reviewed 148 studies involving over 300,000 participants and concluded that having weak social ties was as harmful to health as being an alcoholic and twice as harmful as obesity. Julianne Holt-Lunstad, co-author of the analysis, told Reuters, A lack of social relationships was equivalent to smoking up to 15 cigarettes a day.
A more recent study, published in the , found a biological response to loneliness that triggers disease. According to the researchers, social isolation sets off a cellular chain reaction that increases inflammation and suppresses the bodys immune response.
Perhaps the most compelling evidence that friendships affect longevity comes from the ongoing Harvard Study of Adult Development. Since 1938, researchers have been following 724 men, tracking their physical health as well as social habits. Robert Waldinger, the studys current director, said in his recent TED Talk, The clearest message that we get from this 75-year study is this: Good relationships keep us happier and healthier. Period. Socially disconnected people are, according to Waldinger, less happy, their health declines earlier in midlife, their brain functioning declines sooner, and they live shorter lives than people who are not lonely.
Lest we think having 500 Facebook friends might offer some protection, Waldinger warns, Its not just the number of friends you have its the quality of your close relationships that matters.
So what makes for a quality friendship? William Rawlins, a professor of interpersonal communications at Ohio University who studies the way people interact over the course of their lives, told The Atlantic that satisfying friendships need three things: Somebody to talk to, someone to depend on, and someone to enjoy.
Finding someone to talk to, depend on, and enjoy comes naturally when were young. In college, for example, we build strong bonds when nearly everyone around us is also searching for connection. But as we grow into adulthood, the model for how to maintain our friendships isnt clear. We graduate and go our separate ways, pursuing careers and starting lives miles apart from our best friends.
Suddenly work obligations and ambitions trump buddies and brewskis. It becomes impossible to be spontaneous without planning for weeks, if not months, in advance. Once children enter the picture, exhilarating nights on the town become exhausted nights on the couch.
Friendships Starve to Death
Unfortunately, the less time we invest in people, the easier it is to make do without them until one day it becomes too awkward to reconnect. Since we havent spoken for so long, we think, where would we even begin? If we were still close friends wouldnt we have spoken more by now?
This is how friendships die they starve to death. But as the research reveals, by allowing those friendships to starve, were also mal nourishing our bodies.
Case in point: Several months ago, I found myself in a funk. I now live in San Francisco and whenever someone asked, How are you? my reply was the standard Silicon Valley yuppie salute: Good! Super busy! Yet this wasnt exactly true. I wasnt good.
To put things in perspective, I wasnt bad, either. Things were fine. By all measures, more than fine I had a healthy family, a growing business, and interesting clients to work with. Id recently published a book that became a Wall Street Journal bestseller, and if my social media stats were to be believed, I had plenty of friends and followers.
And yet, the funk. I soon identified the problem: The more professional opportunities came my way, the more time I spent away from my real-life friends the people I truly cared about. Maintaining friendships with people to talk to, depend on, and enjoy takes time.
As an undergraduate, I first heard the term residual benefactor in an economics class. A residual benefactor is the chump who gets whatever is left over when a company is liquidated typically, not much. When were not careful, the people we care about often become residual benefactors: We leave them for last, giving them whatever bits of time are left over after weve attended to everything else.
The Solution, the Kibbutz
If the food of friendship is time together, how do we make the time to ensure were all fed? My friends and I have recently come across a way to keep each other close. It fits into our lifestyles despite busy schedules and a surfeit of children. We call it the kibbutz.
In Hebrew, the word means gathering, and for our gathering, four couples meet every two weeks to talk about one question sort of like an interactive TED Talk over a picnic lunch. The question might range from a deep inquiry, like Whats one thing your parents taught you that you want to pass on to your children? to a lighter, more practical question, like How do you disconnect from your iPhone on weekends?
Having a topic helps in two ways. For one, it gets us past the small talk of sports and weather, and helps us open up about stuff that actually matters. Second, it prevents the gender split that happens when couples convene in groups men in one corner, women in another. The question of the day gets us all talking together.
Consistency and Stiff-Arming the Kids
Every other week, rain or shine, the kibbutz is on our calendars consistency is key. Theres no back-and-forth emailing to find a time. We always meet at the same place, and each couple brings their own food so theres no prep or cleanup. If one couple cant make it, no biggie, the others carry on the conversation.
What about the kids? In our group, kids are welcome, but they dont run the show. Typically they play on their own, but if they interject, theyre given a stern response that sounds something like: Im having a conversation with my friends because my friends are important to me. Youre welcome to listen or join the conversation, but please dont interrupt unless its an emergency.
For our childrens sake, we want them to know that adult friendships matter. We dont want them to have to rely on TV to figure out how adults interact. By watching us, our children see that being a good friend means listening when others have something to share, and not being distracted by anything else including our cellphones, the football game, or even our own children (unless someone is bleeding). The entire affair lasts about two hours, and I always leave the kibbutz with new ideas and insights.
Most important, I feel closer to my friends. No, our group isnt as funny or spontaneous as the pseudo-New Yorkers I grew up watching on TV. But it turns out that fun wasnt what I was missing it was authentic, caring friendships. Making time to invest in my most important relationships finally snapped me out of my funk and provided the psychological nourishment I didnt know I was missing.
Not only that, it turns out the time I spend with my friends is also an investment in my future health. Forget diets and the latest workout routines. The best medicine may be to gather your favorite people around a table and make a toast: To friendship, and your health.
Heres the Gist:
Studies show adult friendships have a significant impact on our happiness and well-being.
Committing to my kibbutz has had the biggest impact on my happiness over the past year. Heres how our group works, but the lessons can apply to any adult friendship:
Book the time Reserve time on your calendar for the foreseeable future so there’s no guesswork or scheduling headaches about when well see each other again. Our group meets every two weeks.
Go deep Talking about a meaningful topic strengthens your bonds. Get past the shallow small talk. In our group, a different member brings the question of the day to each meeting.
Dont let kids derail you Children benefit from seeing you model a healthy adult friendship. Tell the kids they can listen or participate, but they cant interrupt unless its an emergency.
