You know what? I'm so passionate about this subject & think I could talk about it for an hour (or at least ten minutes). Writing the script right now & will post when it's finished.
Saw the opening for the Legend of Vox Machina S3! Going to elaborate on this later but I would bet real physical money that the score was completed after the animation was done. In the previous openings, even the key poses and arcs of the characters are on-beat or syncopated with the theme. Totally possible if the score is done first!!
The S3 opening is nice, but that level of synergy is absent. As an animator myself, TOTALLY feels like what we get when the composer’s got to try and match us! Too bad, too— the animation and visuals are great, but the music’s not hittin’ those beats!
The brushwork is SO good. Everything about this is SO compelling artistically! The color, the texture, the use of texture to guide the eye to the face… HUGELY in love with this piece!!!
Sad FM
"Hail holy queen of the sea, you're whirling in rags, you're vast and you're sad."
This is such a good point! I almost exclusively work in short form animation where this is very possible. In film I know it comes after to match the pictures and scene… I wonder if it’s the same for feature animation!

Huh!! That is really interesting!! I think for animators it really depends on the focus of the animation and the background of the animator— animation has SUCH rhythm, and I’ve worked with composers that can “see” it and composers that can’t! Neat!
Would love to hear your thoughts on the musical depth of the S3 opening— it felt lacking in bass to me? Not as epic? But I can’t pinpoint why!

Okay, I did get a soft rejection (with a side of 10% maybe), but the professional sent a very encouraging reply & essentially said that part of it was that I'd need more training than the other candidates they were looking at (their company is just getting off the ground and they don't have the resources right now), but they did add me (!!!) and say they may be in touch if the slated interviews don't work out and/or would look at me as an option if they expanded!
In this case, I can't overstate how grateful I am for this particular rejection. Hearing that my reel might've been enough had I had more experience-- that at face value, I've executed my craft to a near-competitive level for the kind of position I was going for-- wow! After months of silent, dead-end rejections... I needed that more than I thought I did!
Went to apply for a job, midway through I learned that the person hiring is someone I respect very, very much in my field (who I have never spoken to), then saw the application site was closed (How Did I Miss the Deadline for this Really Cool Job!!!!) and then saw that it was the website's fault and that they were taking applications through LinkedIn DM's.
So I did the premium trial & sent my reel in, and they told me they're sending it to recruitment/leads and that it's a good reel!!!! And then the person I have respected for years sent me a friend request!
I'm beside myself!!
