can i just say that everytime you draw crassus its either him laughing at someone whos having a terrible day or having his day become terrible because some mf approached him and i am ABSOLUTELY DIGGING IT
I just finished up some books in my Pompey reading pile, so we’re about to unlock a third thing which is the kind of Problem™️ Crassus looks like from someone else’s point of view 🥰

I'm glad to hear it sshshdhd ....to think.... it started out as a goofy thing because I was reminiscing about theater & backstage melodrama and had a WILD moment where I was overcome with a desire to draw caesar and cassius making out....and now, months later, there's a first draft! & hopefully I'll be able to find the time to draw some more polished comics with that story now that there's something resembling a plot I can rely on :)

this tweet made me laugh, and I frequently make political comparisons between these specific groups of people, so now it's finally a comic

spartacus-sketch-page anon here! if you don’t mind me asking, what’s the story behind gaius/amicus/lentulus?
some of this will probably change because it’s meant to reflect an arc in trikaranos and I’ll edit it accordingly, but the general outline is that lentulus (batiatus in plutarch, although I’ll probably side with his cognomen as vatia in my own story) got amicus as a gift from lanista he was meeting with, who told lentulus that amicus isn’t really gladiator material but probably has “other uses,” and lentulus was like, pal EVERYONE is gladiator material if you know what you’re doing.
which is meant to serve as the reveal for who these guys are talking about
(I posted this excerpt forever ago, it’s all finally coming together 🍾)
and then one day, lentulus’ friend gaius from rome comes to capua.
that’s all I’m going to say for now! I do have a full spartacus comic planned and I’m going to save the bulk of the story details for that :) (except for when I do another sketch page with more scenes lmao)
#lanistas deal in human flesh so they’re on par with pimps and butchers. martial’s got opinions about them#anyway it’s not particularly subtle: sexual violence and physical brutality & exploitation is all over the place here#like gaius is raping amicus but he’s acting well within roman behavior wrt to slave bodies#that doesn’t make it any less awful tho. to be clear. & in the Roman republic: frequently those slaves were#ALSO victims of another layer of institutional violence: the imperialist war culture of rome (& the economy)#and you can’t separate sexual violence from war or from imperialism/colonialism either#ask tag#spartacus tag

Sorry if you’ve answered this before but how did you learn to draw? I love your style so so much and am super interested to hear how you developed it!
I used to check out those how to draw books from the school library in elementary school to learn how to draw Archie comics characters, and then took art classes as an elective in high school. deviantart for tutorials when I didn’t know how to draw something, town public library for finding books on color theory, etc. I carried (and still do) a sketchbook around in case I saw cool knickknacks or trees and wanted to remember it because I didn’t have a cellphone with a camera until I was, like, twenty lmao. eventually it just kind of culminated into a style!
#I went to a trade art school but it wasn’t for learning art it was for learning the professional publication production work pipeline#I wanted to like. be the person formatting graphic novels bc graphic design is my passion. or a colorist or editor lmao.#unfortunately the whole industry sucked so I freelance as an illustrator now#the most Art related thing I did in art school was probably the mandatory life drawing sessions which I started doing in highschool#for fun and whimsy#and also because I saw an ad for it in a local paper and thought ‘oh cool just like da Vinci would have done’#ask tag

so far, the three from historical records that have made an appearance on a sketch page are Spartacus, Crixus, and Gannicus!
the other two, Gaius and Amicus, are my own: Gaius is a friend of Lentulus, visiting from Rome, and Amicus is gladiator who was originally from a different ludus before ending up at the one that belongs to Lentulus

Do you like opera??
I don’t dislike opera, but it’s not something I’m particularly into. I watch/listen to stuff my friends (specifically, like, two people) recommend me, otherwise I prefer plays, ballet, & sometimes musicals.
