for me it depends mostly on how higher difficulties work. if it's like many difficulty systems where enemies just have more health and you die faster. that doesn't make the game more interesting. but if the higher difficulty actually adds something new to the experience, I'll prefer it that way. best example i have is terraria. i play expert mode because it has new ai changes and is actually more interesting to play compared to normal, but i don't play master mode because it's just expert with bigger health bars and fewer mistakes. that's just not any more interesting

i will always choose an easier mode in a game over hard mode because id rather have a chill time tbh
