“They loved each other so much. They’d waited so long for each other ‘cause it wasn’t the right time, and then it was, and they only got to spend a couple months together.” Buck sniffles. “They waited for so many years to be together and—and a freak accident took him away from her.”  Eddie reaches for Buck’s hand, covering it with his own. Buck flips his hand and laces their fingers, holding on tight.  “It’s terrifying, you know. A love like that, how it can make you feel and what it can have you do.” Buck barks a laugh, one that sounds like it hurts his throat, and raises his free hand to wipe the tears gathering on the ends of his lashes. “And I—I can’t imagine having a love like they had and losing it. I don’t think I’d survive it.”  Eddie thins his lips, blinking away the glimpse of Shannon from the back of his mind. He lost her, one of the great loves of his life, but she’s not the only one. And it hurt, you know, tore him apart from the inside over and over and over, and some days he didn’t think he was going to survive but he did.  He did. He is.  And Buck will, too.  “I know it’s scary, Buck, but losing the person you love isn’t something you have to worry about,” he says. “It’s not going to happen to you. I promise.”  Buck wrinkles his nose, a sign he’s holding back a flood of emotion, and asks, “How do you know?”  Eddie steps into Buck’s space so they’re chest to chest, heart to heart. “Because I’m not going anywhere, baby,” he says, reaching up to cradle Buck’s cheek in his hand. “I promise that, too.”

WIP Wednesday!!

Since a lot of people expressed interest in Clipboard Buck's sexuality quiz, I'm sharing some of that 😊. Haven't had a lot of time to write today, had to take pupper to the vet for his shots (he's okay! A little mad about it, but he's kinda dramatic lol). Anyway, this fic is slowly coming together. I'm hoping it won't take super long, but ya know. Have one of my favorite parts:

"So you're..." Hen trails off. She's biting back a smile that screams I knew it. "I don't know what I am," Buck shrugs. "For the longest time I thought how I felt was just... normal." "It's not abnormal," Hen assures him. She rounds the coffee table and sits on it. "That's what Maddie said," Buck sighs. "All I know is I am definitely not straight, and I want to know what I am." "You don't have to pick a label," Hen points out. "I never did," Chim says before taking another bite of celery. The entire team looks at him, varying degrees of surprise on their faces. He looks around the group. "What? I'm not straight. This can't be news to you." "I knew you were flirting with Eddie his first shift," Buck declares at the same time Hen says "it's not news." Eddie raises his eyebrows and grins at Chim, who honest to God blushes. "I was being friendly," Chim insists. "You were being a possessive golden retriever trying to mark your territory, I... didn't want him to feel unwelcome, that's all." "Aw, thanks, Chim," Eddie says, patting his knee. "Or was it Asian Fabio?" Chim shoves at him. The force throws Chim off balance and he falls against Eddie's side, knocking him into Buck, who half collapses across the couch like a line of ridiculous dominos. Hen cackles and Bobby scrubs his hands over his face with a long suffering sigh. By some miracle, their coffees- and Chim's celery and peanut butter- escape the mess unscathed. Chim scrabbles up and takes a seat beside Hen on the coffee table, glaring at Eddie like all that was his fault. Eddie sits up and takes Buck's hand, pulling him upright. "Oh, so you help Buck but not the guy who wasn't afraid to flirt with you?" Chim balks. "I've always been the favorite," Buck says with a cheeky grin, knocking his shoulder against Eddie's. "Before we end up calling an ambulance to our own firehouse," Bobby says, "have you thought any about the label you might want?" Buck sighs, his shoulders dropping. "I've tried. It's all really confusing and I've read articles about each one that might apply to me until the screen went blurry." "Why don't you do one of those quizzes they used to put in magazines?" Bobby suggests.

I made a meme

thinking about buck's "i was just the guy standing there when it happened" after the shooting and buck standing there watching eddie let chris go. like, extremely UPSETTING actually. because in both of those situations there was literally nothing more that he could do. but he's BUCK. he measures his worth in what he can do, not who he is. being there is not enough, it's not enough. except to eddie it is enough, it always has been. eddie doesn't need him to do anything other than be there.

Chapter 3

Chapter 1 Chapter 2 (cover by @ronordmann 🥰)

There’s already too much distance between him and the dark haired stranger. Already around the corner and out of sight from the most handsome man he’s ever seen Buck has to try at least.

“Bobby?”

“No” 

The tone is clear, which Buck thinks is extremely unfair, it’s not like he’s actually suggested anything yet. Bobby has no reason to say no. He doesn’t even know what he wants to say. 

Despite the pre-refusal he tries anyway.

“But he might have been more hurt than he let on, I think we should go back. He he could of bumped his head on the wall and we didn’t notice” 

He stops and manages two steps in the other direction before Bobby grabs hold of him and pulls him in the correct direction. 

“He was fine, Buck.”

Bobby’s voice is firm, that’s his ‘I won’t change my mind’ voice. Another thing about his mentor that Buck is regrettably familiar with.

“But I I should have given him my number in case he felt worse later. I know some first aid.”

“Yeah?” 

Bobby turns to face him so Buck can fully appreciate the look he’s getting, Buck pulls a face at the eyebrows that are sky high as Bobby says,

“…mouth to mouth maybe?”

Eddie Diaz in S2:

Eddie getting more and more reckless the longer Chris is away.

Eddie throwing himself into dangerous situations because without his son he isn't sure what the point of living is.

Eddie slowly figuring out who he is outside of being a dad and starting to be more careful at work because Chris will come home and he needs to be there when Chris is ready.

Eddie going missing during a natural disaster and Buck loses his mind trying to get to him as he's swept away.

Buck spending the days following Eddie going missing looking through hospitals and morgues trying to find him.

Buck telling Gerrard he needs to be the one to tell the Diaz parents and Chris that Eddie is missing/presumed dead and Gerrard just rolling his eyes and saying something mildly homophobic about Buck and Eddie.

Buck calling and Chris knowing immediately that something is wrong by the sound of Buck's voice alone.

Bobby having to balance his own guilt of not being the captain and thinking he would have noticed Eddie being more reckless and trying to support Buck and Hen and Chim and Ravi through the grief of losing a team mate, a family member.

Bobby taking up the mantel of searching hospitals for Eddie when Gerrard won't give Buck more time off.

Bobby picking up the Diaz parents and Chris at the airport and telling them they haven't given up yet.

Chris feeling grief and confusion and anger that his dad is missing and maybe dead without them getting the chance to make up.

Chris realizing he didn't tell his dad he loves him when he left and that the last thing his dad said to him was how much he loves him and the last thing he said was 'okay'.

Buck getting a call at two in the morning four days after Eddie went missing from an unknown number only to have it be a hospital in Newport Beach. They finally managed to get Eddie's phone unlocked and Buck is listed as the emergency contact.

Eddie washing up on a beach miles and miles away from where he was swept away with a head wound, internal bleeding, and a broken arm. The paramedics and rescue team are shocked it isn't worse.

Buck calling Chris and rushing to the Diaz house to pick him up and take him to the hospital.

Eddie waking up from a medically induced coma with Chris and Buck in his room.

Chris tearfully telling Eddie he loves him and even though he's still mad he wants to come home.

Buck tearfully telling Eddie he's never allowed to do that again because he doesn't think he'll survive Eddie actually dying.

Eddie tearfully (and high on painkillers) telling Chris he loves him more than anything and Chris can be as mad as he wants to be - Eddie will love him no matter what.

Eddie turning to Buck when Chris leaves with his grandparents a few hours later to get breakfast and telling him he dreamed about him.

Eddie telling Buck he's sorry he's too late, but he loves him and thought Buck deserved to know that.

Buck telling Eddie's he's a dumbass and he's not too late.

Chris walking back into the room an hour later to find Buck and Eddie both crammed into the bed, sleeping together.

Helena and Ramon being a little confused about their son being cuddled by his best friend, only to turn around and see the rest of the firefam arriving and smiling fondly, like they were waiting for this to happen.

Eddie and Chris taking time to get to know each other again, but doing the work to rebuild their foundation.

Eddie telling Frank three months after he went missing that he never wants to scare his family like that again, but going missing like that might have been the best thing to happen to him since Chris came home and now he has Buck as his partner in every way imaginable.

I’m obsessed with Eddie and Buck being equals in a way none for their romantic relationships ever have been. Because Buck is always dating someone that treats him like he’s less, and Eddie is always treating himself like he’s less. Because they both put whoever their dating on a pedestal. Buck because he sees the best in everyone and wants someone to give his love to and doesn’t feel like he’s worth anything so he settles for whatever he’s offered, and Eddie because he’s never been allowed to place value in himself outside of what he can offer and he views women in some ‘holy’ way and thinks that ‘mother of my child’ is the highest importance of a romantic partner, even if it’s just a ‘Shannon substitute’. Which as concepts are shattered by each other, because Buck has seen Eddie at his worst and still thinks the best of him, and Buck has been Eddie’s coparent the whole time, and removes that old traditional expectation he put on himself, simply by being a man and fitting the role in his life better than any woman could. And it’s incredible because if they were both willing to look at themselves and say ‘this is what I deserve’ then they could both ask themselves ‘who treats me as good as I treat them?’ And Eddie could ask himself ‘if I remove woman from the equation, who would fit in my life in that way?’ And Buck could ask himself ‘if I thought I could have anything I wanted, what would I want?’ And then they would arrive at the answer of ‘each other’ really fucking easily.

because I read (and loved) @tizniz recent vampire Buck fic, I was inspired to go back to my drafts of a continuation of my vampire Buck fic, so have some of that!

"I'm not going to lock you in to a life where you watch me grow old," Eddie had said.

"Uh, isn't that just marriage in general?" Buck teased.

"Not when it's one sided," he said. "And I don't want you to feel that kind of obligation to stick around for it. Because we both know you will."

"Isn't that my choice?" Buck had said, and Eddie could sense in his tone that he was a little hurt by the rejection, but he wouldn't truly let it show.

"It is, that's why if we stay unmarried, when you finally realise that you don't want to spend decades taking care of me or stop being attracted to me—"

"Not possible but I'll let you finish," he said with a petulant shrug, making Eddie sigh heavily through his nose.

"If," he said, agreeing to meet him in the middle. "You change your mind, you're free to just end it and go without guilt."

"Do you honestly think I'm going to change my mind?" Buck asked.

"I'm going to get older, Buck," he said, and for a moment Buck dropped his gaze. "You're not."

In an instant he was mere inches from Eddie, looking down into his eyes with an impossibly intense gaze and then cupping Eddie's face in his hands.

"And I'm going to love you until the day I die," he said, eyes burning with that searing passion of his. "Whether that's decades or centuries. I'll love you."

Lucy stands there arms folded and a dare in her eye. She doesn’t think he’ll do it. He shouldn’t he knows that it’s reckless, he’s not supposed to be reckless anymore.

Lucy’s face gets a trifle smuger and he can feel the urge to prove her wrong bubbling up inside him. He could do it. It’s not that high. It’s not that far from one end of the roof to the other. How hard can it be? He’s strong and he’s got excellent balance.

“Buck.”

Eddie Diaz’s voice is serious, dripping with a message he’s not actually voicing but is in his eyes when Buck sneaks a look at him.

“It’s not a good idea.”

“Eddie’s right, it’s far too high. You could never manage it. Don’t worry, we understand.”

Her eyes are alight with challenge.

“Buck, don’t”

He ignores that, again from Eddie Diaz. Who is he to tell Buck not to do something. Just because he scored highest in last week's maths test doesn’t mean he knows what Buck can and can’t do. Doesn’t mean he’s better than Buck just because he’s smarter and taller and more handsome.

Buck ignores Eddie and Lucy and marches towards the house. He puts his hands on the trellis that will get him up to the roof and starts to climb.

No but thinking about Buck when he was a teen makes me go INSANE actually like he was absolutely that kid who wanted friends and attention SO BADLY and everyone could see the desperation just dripping off of him, the way he would throw himself into friendships TOO fast and TOO intensely and the other person would withdraw and back off from the sheer intensity of that energy. And like, it’s not that he was Unpopular, its just that the other kids saw him as an amusement at best and he would play that role willingly, GLADLY if it meant they’d invite him out after football games (is it canon that he played fb in hs? or was that in a fanfic and i accepted it as truth?) or watch him make a fool of himself at keg parties.

Like, think about how quick he was to follow that random guy to LA from Peru like that boy has NEVER had a best friend before in his life, only Maddie could ever come CLOSE to fitting in that role, but even then they weren’t equals, she was his sister, and kind of his mom. And even at the 118 like Hen & Chim & Bobby all care about him but he’s like, their misguided little brother/surrogate son, not a BEST FRIEND.

But then along comes Eddie and not only does he accept Buck the MINUTE he drops his dumb posturing act, he offers him this equal partnership—you have my back, I’ll have yours—without a single hesitation. And when Buck comes on super strong the way he still can’t shake (involving himself in Eddie’s childcare issues), Eddie not only accepts those overtures he reciprocates (helping Buck’s sister move, later on coming to cheer him up w/ Christopher post-crush injury) 

LIKE!!!!!! Buck has absolutely never had anyone in his life like Eddie. Someone who just knows him so well and sees all his flaws and hangups and doesn’t see him as a fuck up or a younger brother but a FRIEND, someone to rely on, someone to play video games with and talk to about the hard stuff and CALL WHEN THEY GET ARRESTED (I know he did NOT call Buck, but they sure did go out of their way to make it explicit that he was Eddie’s FIRST CHOICE) Someone who just wants him around just BECAUSE. Because he’s fun and because he’s kind and he cares and he just!!!! ENJOYS SPENDING TIME WITH HIM!!! Like he took him to take Christopher to see Santa??? Just because???? And he never makes Buck feel like he’s too much, or he’s coming on too strong, or he wants more friendship than Eddie is willing to give, like every time Buck wants to connect with him Eddie is RIGHT THERE offering that same connection back to him (and, actually, is often the one offering first) and being a safe place for Buck to land no matter what.

Like I obviously ship it as well, but their friendship ALONE has me shaking/crying/throwing up

Buck is off in the corner sitting down in a fake rock in front of a fake castle wall with an arched window off to one side. It has flowers climbing over it. It’s obviously a photo shoot and Eddie’s going to be buying whatever edition of whatever magazine the pictures will be in because wow, even from here he’s impressed. E Buckley is sat with his legs parted, he’s leaning forward resting his folded forearms over the hilt of the sword that’s pointing straight down between his thighs. Eddie swallows to moisten his suddenly dry mouth.
