He's scared that if he ever actually stops to take a break, completely relax, and fully drop his guard, something horrible will happen to Gotham and/or the people he cares about and he won't be able to stop it because he wasn't prepared OR the years and years of burn out and physical/emotional pain will finally catch up to him (because he stopped running from it) and it'll hit him so hard that he'll finally have to face the trauma he endured as a child when he saw his parents die (which he is not physically capable of coping with, because the event fractured his identity into Batman, a man with childish morals and an inability to make exceptions [such as not killing a petty crook OR a mass murderer and thinking they should be dealt with the same way] and a childish sense of justice that cannot exist without him blocking out his trauma [so if he had to face that trauma his very identity would cease to exist]) therefore his mental health would be destroyed to such an extent that he'd be unable to even pretend he was alright, which in turn will make the people he cares about worry about him, and because he hates when people worry about him it'll cause him to lash out which will further isolate him from the world and from any form of human connection, leaving him sitting broken at an empty table in an empty mansion on an empty island just like he did when he was a mere, insignificant, hurt, orphaned eight year old who hadn't yet made his mark on the world-

i love the (slightly cracky) premise that the newer batkids like duke who weren't around during jason's genuine "i hate the batfam" era would sometimes forget that it even happened so there'd be times where it would go:

Tim Drake, as Robin, allowed himself to get captured by Art Thieves to find out where they were hawking their goods. He was not expecting to be sold as one of the items, or for roughly half of the villains in attendance to his auction to lose their fucking minds at the sight of him.

Turned out, they had a soft spot for him because of how often he saved their asses back when Bruce was going off the deep end.

So when they saw Robin, tied up and beat up and being auctioned off like a thing to a room full of people who were more likely to keep the kid as some sort of fucked up pet, they lost it.

The building is destroyed. Priceless art ground into the dirt with nary a care. Catwoman herself ripped a priceless, thought to be lost Van Gogh for the sake of stabbing one of the auctioneers in the leg with the frame they had it in.

By the time Batman arrives, Robin is actively trying to talk everyone down from killing the thieves. Trying.

there was a period of during which the members of the Batfamily would only communicate with each other during superhero shit.

somewhere around the time where angst was just high on all ends.

Jason was going through another bout of feeling like a man out of time.

Tim's abandonment issues were kicking up again.

Dick felt even more pressure to always keep the smile on his face.

Damian was struggling with being allowed to just be a kid for the first time.

Steph kept biting off more than she can chew in an effort to prove her worth.

Cass kept having to drag herself out of a constant state of auto-pilot and being on high-alert 24/7.

Duke still felt hesitant about exploring his powers freely, especially in front of his family members.

Bruce was struggling to get through to any of his kids while also failing to acknowledge that he himself had his own shit to work through.

and poor Alfred was just trying to hold it all together.

and, as usually happens when you're going through shit, each member of the family felt so overwhelmed and suffocated by their own struggles that they failed to notice that the person down the hall, across the dinner table, or sitting beside them on the couch was also suffering in silence.

then, there was a massive breakout from Arkham, or some extraterrestrial bullshit, or some new hotshot who thinks they're going to be the one to finally destroy Gotham.

either way, for the first time, the ENTIRE family went out.

and the thing about fighting villains is that even after years of training, it still requires almost all of your focus and concentration.

so yes, Dick and Jason were too focused on kicking ass to notice that they'd fallen back into their old banter patterns from years ago.

and yes, Damian and Cass—the two kids trained from birth to be a weapon—made a game out of trying to one-up each other, combining their discipline and competitiveness into entertainment.

and you know Steph and Tim were absolute menaces, feeding off of each other's energy and bouncing jokes and ideas off of each other that got every person on coms to crack at one point or another.

as for Duke, well ... let's just say he was surprised by how much Bruce asked him to take the lead with his abilities.

for all of Gotham's faults, it had a few redeemable qualities, Alfred admitted to himself the next morning, while he served breakfast to a tired but satisfied family.

I would bet cash money that Dick said the exact same thing to Bruce when he was 14, too. I AM MAKING THE ULTIMATE SACRIFICE FOR YOU BY PUTTING ON A SUIT. IT IS RESTRICTING MY FREEDOM IN ALL THE WRONG PLACES, BRUCE.
