One day the Portal changes colors. Danny is convinced that is just Clockwork doing his shenanigans again, specially when what comes from the Portal is just his older sister, maybe in her mid-to-late 20s
Present Day Jazz is fascinated by her and asks her a million questions, mainly if their paper about ghost envy was published or if she went to the college she wanted.
But something is... off about her. She looks at their parents with suspicion in her eyes, she always seem to have a gun or a knife hidden in her clothes no matter how many times they assure her things are safe.
It wasn't until they learn the truth that everything makes sense — she comes from a timeline where she kills their parents for murdering Danny. And this is her attempt number 165 at preventing that future.

Weaponized incompetence my ass just weaponize it back. Once my dad tries to pull the “but I don’t know how to clean the counters as well as you” on my mom and she said “ok honey I’ll show you” and she made him stand in the kitchen and watch her clean the counters. Then she pulled out a bottle of chocolate syrup and proceeded to spray the entire kitchen in chocolate, hand him the sponge and said “okay now it’s your turn”

if you've been wondering where I've been, the answer is "being beseiged by plot bunnies". have a snippet.
Jason's up at the bar ordering drinks when she comes in, all long red hair and bright green eyes and an air that screams danger, and Jason knows he's fucked.
A sharp smile as she sidles up beside him sends his heart thumping; her voice when she orders tequila is the kind of husky Jason will happily take orders from. She leans forward over the bar, her hair cascading to one side as her spine curves under her leather jacket, and her shirt pulls tight enough to show the silhouette of a weapon at her back.
Jason has no idea what kind of weapon it is. He still wishes asking for a spar was socially acceptable.
In his ear Roy snickers, mutters about taking watch, then clicks his comm off. Jason uses his far hand to flip Roy the bird, tucked up in the corner in a comfy booth seat, then puts him out of mind. Jason's not gonna turn down a gift horse.
"Tequila, huh?" Jason sips at his beer, the bottle that was meant to be Roy's half forgotten by his elbow. "Interesting choice."
The woman shrugs, and her hair ripples in the bar's low light like molten glass being shaped by a master's hand. "It's cheap and strong," she replies. The bartender slides her drink across, and she lifts it with a nod then downs the shot in one. "Why?" she asks as she slides the glass back. "You got opinions on my alcohol choices?"
"Fuck no." Jason gulps down a mouthful of his own beer to wet his suddenly parched throat. "You do you. I'm just impressed."
This time her grin is a bit softer, a bit friendlier.
"Well, Mr Two-beers—" Jason scowls at the nickname, "—what about a challenge? You, me, and whatever spirits this place happens to stock?"
Jason shouldn't. He really shouldn't. But Roy's okayed it and Bruce's black card is burning a hole in Jason's pocket. And out here in the middle of nowehere, at a little roadhouse-hotel-bar that practically is the town, there's no need to keep his guard as high as back in Gotham.
When will he get another chance to challenge a pretty lady to a drinking contest?
"Alright, you're on." Jason drained his open beer, slid the unopened bottle down the bar for someone else to grab, and flagged down the bartender. "What's first?"

99% of "mysterious disappearances" esp of people in their 20s who start acting weird for 48 hours and then vanish are not mysterious, thats just when a lot of reality-obliterating mental illness tends to kick in and it's pretty easy to get a short circuit in your brain that makes you go family guy death pose in joshua tree national park. it's not any less tragic, it's just a documented phenomenon and not particularly predictable. its a big reason the medical advice is for people with a family history of schizophrenia to completely avoid weed and psychedelics. "people just go crazy sometimes" is a principle of human health that used to be a lot more accepted prior to the american midcentury and to a certain extent thats a healthier way to conceptualize and prepare for the risk, as opposed to the modern assertion that anyone acting weird is dangerous and broken forever.

The midjourney stuff just reminds of when we were trying to find a new platform to host the ao3 donation form, and companies kept trying to tell me about all their "ai" features that would track donor engagement, and figure out the optimal pattern to email individual donors asking for follow up donations, and all the ways they suggest we manipulate people into staying on our websites. It was a great way to filter out who either wasn't listening to us when we described our ethics and donor base, or just didn't believe us.
Now granted ao3 is a unique case based on a) the amount of page views we get in any given time period and b) the fact that most donors absolutely do Not want to be identified as such anywhere, (the default "list of recent donors" module got nuked Immediately) but it surprised me some that the concept of "donors who value their privacy and would be furious at even the whiff of AI" is unique. Some of us really are just existing in different worlds.
