Who is the third who walks always beside you?
When I count, there are only you and I together
But when I look ahead up the white road
There is always another one walking beside you
–TS. Eliot, The Waste Land, written about Ernest Shackleton’s 1916 third man experience.
On this day in 1916 Ernest Shackleton reached a whaling station in Stromness in the South Atlantic, completing an epic 26 day journey to reach help after losing his ship. While crossing the mountains, starving and without climbing gear, Shackleton famously saw a fourth person in his group of three desperate sailors.
And he's not the only one. The “third man,” named for the poem above, is the phenomenon where people in life-threatening or highly stressful situations sense another person (of whatever gender) with them. The solo hiker has a companion, or the group of four becomes five, of which most or all report seeing the extra person.
Read all about the Third Man Phenomenon and get writing prompts on my blog, such as:
All the lonely people. The third man has been reported most often in mountaineering, shipwrecks, and polar exploration, but any highly stressful situation would work for a story, including disasters, crime, or simply getting lost. The sky’s the limit here: you could have an alien on a disabled ship experience the third man as the ship’s AI, or a sorcerer believing their animal familiar is with them. You could also combine the third man with crisis apparitions, where people in life-threatening situations appear to their loved ones many miles away. Perhaps the third man is two-way communication.

Hey, y’all, it’s Weird Wednesday! Where on some Wednesdays, I blog about weird stuff and give writing prompts.
Today: The Devil Whale: Island or Sea Monster?
The legend of a whale (or turtle) as big as an island can be found all over the world, from Sinbad to Pliny the Elder to St. Brendan; it’s known as Aspidochelone (Asp-Turtle) to the Greeks, the Devil Whale in Christian tradition, and Fastitocalon in the old English poem “The Whale.”
The story goes like this: a ship approaches what seems to be an island in the middle of the sea, complete with sand, hills, and grass. The sailors happily clamber onto solid ground and go about making lunch. But as soon as they light their cooking fires, the “island” begins to shake and sink, revealing its true nature.
The Devil Whale is a fantastic story. But could it be a real thing? Are there whales as big as islands that sink ships and doom sailors? Well, sort of.
Check out the blog post for the whole story and some monstrous writing prompts, such as:
What the blooming hell? Probably the weirdest thing about the story is that little detail which most convinces sailors that this is, in fact, an island and not a living creature: the grass. Some sources say the island-whale’s skin is like sand, and it has bumps that resemble rocks. Sure. But how could there be actual plants growing on the back of a whale? Well, writers, that’s up to you. Maybe the beast is still for so long that seeds can sprout in soil washed up by the waves. Maybe the plants grow by magic, and they’re filled with a rare power sought by the bravest spellcasters. Maybe it’s a glamour: the whale uses a spell to appear like an island, drawing in sailors to eat. Maybe there are even dangerous sirens who live on that “island.”

The innkeeper and his wife, the coachman, they were expecting a middle-aged businessman, too arrogant to listen, too cynical to even believe the warnings are well-meant, too confident in his own science and religion to listen to anyone else. Someone with enough worldly experience that he might recognize Dracula as a threat even if he doesn't understand the nature of the threat. Someone important and well-connected enough that he's too risky to kill, old and dull enough not to be interesting enough to toy with.
It was a comfort, to know there was no way to save him. Another comfort, that he would be useful and boring enough to be spared, and canny enough to spot the danger.
Then Jonathon Harker shows up, young and earnest and innocent. He praises the food and asks for recipes for his young bride-to-be back home, and they can see in his face how in love he is. They see too his enthusiasm, his fascination. He blushes when he looks at the women and averts his eyes, he consults his phrase book so he can better give compliments.
He's young enough to be their son. Maybe the innkeeper has a child close to Jonathon's age--a son just starting his own life, a daughter a little younger peeking through the door and sighing at the handsome traveler. Or maybe their child would have been Jonathon's age, if only--but no, they must not think that.
But they do think it, and so the innkeeper's wife begs him to take the rosary "for your mother's sake" and it's not really Jonathon she's talking to. The innkeeper whispers to his friends and customers and old gossips, and they pass it to the passengers on the coach. The coachman is taken back too, the money the Count sent weighing heavily in his pocket. To refuse to drive him means death, to warn him is pointless.
Everyone on the couch is older than Jonathon, old enough to know what the devil in the castle does to the young and earnest and innocent. They all carry their own protections, and one by one they offer them to this poor fool who doesn't understand and wouldn't believe, but he's too polite to refuse and kind enough to see their concern and be touched by it.
The coachman drives his horses like he is fleeing from the devil instead of to him, and they all hope, pray, it will be enough.

take his ass to claire’s (again)
[ID: a digital drawing of Ed Teach, with the big beard, in 3/4 view giving the side-eye. he’s wearing small bitchy little pastel rainbow sunglasses and a flowy white shirt. he has bows in his beard, and a collection of various brightly colored hair clips, two rainbow hair wraps, and rainbow glitter in his hair. the image is shaded all over with a layer of rainbow pencil that gives the drawing a slightly holographic look. the background of the drawing is a light purple with some rainbow sparkles scattered to either side of Ed’s head.]
