I still have more Johnny and the Bomb stuff to post. It doesn't seem like there are many Johnny Maxwell fans here, but too bad. There should be! It's not Discworld, and it's for slightly younger readers, but those technicalities don't make a lot of difference to Terry Pratchett's great writing.
In general I find time travel + England + WWII irresistible, I don't know why but see also Blackout/All Clear by the fantastic Connie Willis, and the excellent Doctor Who episodes "The Empty Child"/"The Doctor Dances." Johnny and the Bomb is everything I love about time travel stories, all of the pieces dropping into place in the wrong order but eventually fitting together as a complete picture.
Here's how this book thinks about time, from Johnny's (age 14, I think) perspective:
It doesn't matter how long it takes to build a time machine. We could all die out and evolution could start again with moles or something, it could take millions of years, but sooner or later someone will find out how to do it. It might not even be a machine. It might just be a way of understanding what time is, like everyone was scared of lightning and then one day someone said, look, you can store it in little bottles and then it was just electricity. -- Terry Pratchett, Johnny and the Bomb
[Y]ou probably could move in time like a train on a track, so you flipped over onto another track just a little bit farther along. You moved in space, really. -- Terry Pratchett, Johnny and the Bomb
I mean. It gets in there and rewires your brain a little, you know?
There are also plenty of lighter, funnier bits:
"She looks happy enough," said Kasandra. "What's she listening to?" "I couldn't say for sure," said the nurse. "All I know is the headphones aren't plugged in." -- Terry Pratchett, Johnny and the Bomb
Johnny had never spoken to her in his life, except to say "sorry" when she rammed him with her cart. -- Terry Pratchett, Johnny and the Bomb (it me)
"Turn left!" "But there's traffic coming, Sir John!" "If they haven't got good brakes, they shouldn't be on the road!" -- Terry Pratchett, Johnny and the Bomb (shades of Crowley)
Kirsty normally dealt with the terrible and the unexpected by getting angry with it. -- Terry Pratchett, Johnny and the Bomb (relatable)
I'm just saying don't forget about Johnny and the Bomb and the other books in the Johnny Maxwell trilogy, they deserve to be recognized as part of the Terry Pratchett oeuvre too!

Read the Project 2025 manifesto RIGHT NOW
It's MUCH worse than y'all have been hearing
There is so much here you'll have to look at it for yourself, but the climate policy alone is nightmare fuel.
The republican coalition wants to essentially end funding for green energy, dramatically promote and expand fossil fuel industries, and eliminate funding and regulations in all sectors promoting climate change mitigation. Task forces and offices related to clean energy and lowering carbon emissions will be eliminated and replaced with offices for promoting fossil fuels.
Tumblr media
They want to LOG NATIONAL FORESTS TO "THIN" THE TREES TO STOP WILDFIRES.
Tumblr media
THEY WANT TO FORCE OREGON AND CALIFORNIA TO LOG THEIR NATIONAL FORESTS AND TREAT THEM AS FOR TIMBER PRODUCTION
Tumblr media
There are specific provisions in Project 2025 to essentially destroy the Endangered Species Act, causing it to defer to the rights of "economic development" and "private property." The plan includes delisting gray wolves, cutting the budget so that a "triage" system is used to determine which species will get protection, removing funding for research, removing experts and specialists from the decision-making process, and preventing "experimental" populations of animals from being established.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is so much worse than I expected it to be and there's much more past that: They want to deregulate pesticides and remove much of the EPA's ability to regulate pollutants as well.
Also included in the manifesto is that we should
withdraw from nuclear weapons nonproliferation agreements, build more nuclear weapons, and resume nuclear weapons testing
Tumblr media
The manifesto comprehensively outlines the scorched-earth elimination of abortion access, down to ensuring doctors aren't even trained to perform abortions. There are plans in here to disrupt abortion access GLOBALLY, not just domestically.
Not only that, the Republicans plan on reframing family planning programs around "fertility awareness" and "holistic family planning."
Tumblr media
I can't even describe it all. I'm trying to give screenshots of the most important things but there's so much.
The foreign policy is a nightmare. They plan to push fossil fuels onto the Global South and promote the development of fossil fuel industry in the "developing world."
It is aggressive and antagonistic towards other nations, strongly pro-military, proposing that we INCREASE (!!!!!) defense spending, improve public opinion of the military and military recruitment, and increase the power to fund new weapons technology.
Just read the Department of Defense section. It's about greatly increasing and strengthening the military-industrial complex, collaborating more closely with weapons manufacturers, removing regulatory barriers to arming our allies and to inventing new military weapons, and recruiting more people into the military. They include provisions to develop AI technology for surveillance. And of course, continuing to support Israel is in there.
Elsewhere it proposes interfering in foreign countries with creepy pro-USA propaganda campaigns, even establishing international educational programs where faculty have to pledge to promote USA interests.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There's a line in here about getting rid of PBS because SESAME STREET is LEFTIST for God's sake.
HOW are people claiming democrats have the same policies. I feel like i'm losing my mind.

I just love The Mummy (1999) so much like I've always felt it was a masterpiece, I was never able to pinpoint the exact reason but I think I got it in my last rewatch: every single character is extremely competent in a very concrete, punctual and once-in-a-lifetime helpful skillset, and then they're ABSOLUTE DISASTERS on literally EVERY OTHER ASPECT of their lives. Evy can read and Sherlock her way through literally any egyptian riddle like she was born for it, but PLEASE, DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE, leave ANY sharp objects, unstable structures or even-remotely inflamable objects ANYWHERE near her she WILL find a way to unleash HELL IN HER SLEEP. Rick can smash-parkour-swordfight his way out of any scenario but he has to have ALL neurons completely focused on the ONE (1) task at hand and if he gets out-DudeBroed he loses all his hit points his health meter goes red and he surprise-resets like a forced Windows update (see following scene for reference)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And don't even get me STARTED on Jonathan. This absolute gem of a man really is willing to let his sister drag him to hell and back with only mild complaining and will stop her human sacrifice ritual while the priest is mid-swing with an "hey Evy look we found the book!" with the same energy as if he was proudly announcing he found his long-lost car keys behind the couch but we DON'T blame him because he correctly spent his one braincell on THIS scene that changed the history of cinema forever:

Huh. I am extremely baffled by some of the things I see The Kids say about writing. I assume this is because the world is full of The Horrors these days, and they don't want any of that in their stories. Which, fair. I get it.
But part of what stories are is teaching you about being human. And that includes pain. So you can't not write that. That's just... being alive. Life is full of beauty and suffering. You can't skip the pain. Part of what a story does is teach you about pain and how to live through it.
How are you supposed to bear up under The Horrors if you haven't practiced? That's part of what fiction is for.

You can't say "if this didn't happen then that would have happened" because you don't know everything that might have happened. You might think something'd be good, but for all you know it could have turned out horrible. You cant say "If only I'd . . ." because you could be wishing for anything. The point is, you'll never know. You've gone past. So there's no use in thinking about it. So I don't.

Just a thought for the night, but remember in 2016 there were all these accounts that seemed really really telling you all the ways Hillary Clinton was some kind of demon woman, just the worst, and really Trump wouldn't be worse and maybe he'd even be better?
and then it turned out they got banned for being literally Russian agents and never came back because spoiler they were?
does it feel like that all over again? just a thought.
