I'm Jessica, an illustrator, designer, and ceramic artist & this is my process blog! Follow for extreme close-ups of tiny brushstrokes, assorted clay creatures, and sometimes books!
To see more finished work, visit my website at jessicabartram.ca & to buy things (mostly ceramics), see my shop: heywitch.bigcartel.com!
Augh I've been in total head-down-gotta-get-stuff-done mode for the last few weeks & so have hardly been taking any photos while working, BUT please witness the Shelf Of Things I Made This Month:
When I get back from opening my cottage, I'll have 36 mugs to glaze, plus a batch of critters & etc to bisque & then also glaze. And all that has to be done by the end of June, while I also work on the illustrations for a kids book & another client project (help).
My last few sculptures before calling this batch done were some more ravens & they were such a nice way to finish up, as I find them particularly soothing to sculpt :)
These things are mostly for a summer market I'm doing, but I'll be putting anything that doesn't sell up in my shop in the fall!
Yesss love to get a shoutout for my frankly unreasonable reading habits!! <3
1, 20, 43! 📚
Name the best book you've read so far this year.
It's gotta be Bear by Marian Engel. Unironically: this book fucking slaps. 10/10. It won a Governor General's award for a reason.
20. Where & how do you find new books to read?
My friends on instagram are 90% of the sources for book recs. Especially @jbbartram-illu. She reads sooo much & posts so many interesting titles. I'm always screenshotting & adding to my library holds based on her recs. This is also why I post a lot of the books I read on my insta stories. Gotta keep the book rec cycle going haha.
43. Title of a book you own that's in the WORST physical condition.
Omg my poor copy of Castle Waiting by Linda Medley. It looks like this because I read it 8000000 times in high school.

Hi all! My artwork “New Perspectives” is up for auction in the 14th Annual UPwithART fundraiser supporting Unity Project London and Museum London here in Ontario!
You can view this piece in-person at the Museum's exhibition from April 26 to May 3 – free admission. Save the date for the arty-party on May 4 and get your tickets and/or donate now at UPwithART.ca !
This event will help support the unhoused members of our community access shelter and move to permanent housing as quickly as possible. Support would mean a lot for this cause. :)
The fastest way to shut down my "freelance life means I have to constantly be working" thoughts is to remind myself that if I was a boss holding a worker to the standards I hold myself to, their union would hunt me for sport and nobody would blame them.
OK so this seems like it would be a Big Deal, but this miso ramen is my fav thing to make: https://www.japanesecooking101.com/miso-ramen-recipe/
Here's my most recent go at it:
Since I don't eat pork, I sub in about 2-3tbsps of Dashi stock powder for the ground pork in the broth (but I'm sure the pork is super tasty!), and I put like 3x as much ginger in during the broth phase because I'm a ginger fiend.
I also like to split the tbsps of miso between the regular grocery store stuff & a locally-made fancy one, but that's also not necessary. I've used all kinds of miso paste (white, aka, etc) & it can be fun to change it up & see what that does to the flavour.
Also, if you don't have sake hanging around, you can split the 2tbsps of sake for 1tbsp of rice wine vinegar & 1tbsp of mirin & that works great.
If you have access to fresh ramen noodles (or fresh-ish ones), those are great, but any ramen-style noodles from an Asian grocery store work fine because the soup is so good you don't need fancy noods.
In the photo above, I added some sliced smoked duck breast that my mom gave me in place of the sliced pork, but you can play around with the toppings depending on what you like (my usual are fried corn, green onions, and a 7:23min egg!).
Getting the timing on everything took me a bit, but now I have a streamlined system & can do this from start to finish in about 45mins-1hr :)
hallo. in the spirit of my sandwich post of yore i am asking you: what is your favorite and-or most reliable dinner to make and eat? this month i would like to learn at least one new recipe
bonus points awarded for good leftovers
if it's a depression meal that's understandable but not very helpful for my selfish dream of not eating depression meals
bonus points also awarded for a vegetable such as the noble brogoly 🥦
remember when you were 10 and you would hang out with your friends in order to Look At The Computer together like you went to their house and experienced the information superhighway together. and then leave
