Any research which shows whether farmers in India prefer print or digital media?
Tumblr media
Sharing a bit of market understanding and trends with you in India.
1. Internet is available across India extensively.
2. Indian agriculture market is an informal credit driven market where there are about 4.5 lakh channel partners who sell products to farmers. Channel partners receive products directly from Companies.
3. Major segments / products in India are Crop Protection (Chemicals), Crop Nutrition (Fertilizers), Seeds, Mechanization & Machinery.
4. Companies in agriculture experimented aggressively with digital campaign during Covid-19 onset (FY 2020) of which some were doing digital only until mid year 2021. Digital became cluttered by the mid of 2021 with google targeted ads and direct space buying on website with no actual result which said the customer bought the product. Companies realised that digital can be a good medium to make presence and improve brand recall but print and television segment is import as it comes with a trusted Newspaper Publication and Television channel to reach a regular mass audience.
5. In digital, the cost to reach a farmer was low but companies didn't see sizeable return on investment or conformity if the farmer bought the product.
6. Companies have now started to do integrated campaigns which include Digital, Print advertisements and print and digital ‘advertorial' (Success story / story selling) which is helping brands to have multiple touch points with the farming community in India.
7. Tractor brands in agriculture still do aggressive digital campaign as the cost of product is high and every conversion is high return. Agro chemicals, crop nutrition, seeds are driven by Print and Television as product cost is low and is for mass market.
We at Krishak Jagat - National Agriculture Newspaper did a readership survey among the farming community with our subscribes in India to understand the emerging trends in the farming segment in late 2020-21. We do this every two years.
Sharing the link of the survey which went to the agriculture industry across India:

Agriculture Newspaper Krishak Jagat is the most preferred print medium in India for International advertisers
Tumblr media
Companies across the globe are looking to advertise their products and services to India’s +14 crore farming population. The size of farming population in India is the biggest in the world. Since India has three major agriculture seasons in a year, the farm lands are covered throughout the year with minimum fallow land days. This brings out huge potential for Agri-inputs, agricultural products and services to be marketed in India.
Agriculture season in India starts with the onset of monsoons in June-July and ends around September and October. The second season is called Rabi or the winter cropping season which starts in November and ends around February. The third season is called Summer or Zaid cropping season which starts in March and ends in June. The major crops dominating all the seasons are field Crops which includes paddy, cotton, maize, wheat, pulses, oilseeds along with fruits and vegetables.
Farmers in India have started to adopt technology at a much faster pace due to numerous subsidies given by the government. The basic technology starts with drip irrigation and goes up to automation in fertigation. Drones use in agriculture has been given a strong push by the government with subsidies for various land holding farmers, farmer groups and rural societies working in agriculture.
Krishak Jagat agriculture newspaper is the largest subscribed farmer agriculture newspaper in India. The covers major agriculture states in central India in Hindi language. The newspaper is as old as India’s independence and was established in 1946. It has also been awarded by the leading Indian Government body on agriculture "Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR)”.
