Jehanne (“Giovanna I de Napoli” in Italian) was a member of the Capetian house of Anjou, which had been founded by her great-great-grandparents, Charles Ier de Naples, son of Louis VIII de France and Blanca de Castila, and Beatritz de Provença. Jehanne and her sister, Marie, were the only surviving grandchildren of Robert de Naples, known as “le Sage”. She was betrothed as a child to her second cousin, Prince Endre of Hungary, yet her grandfather took steps to bar Endre from the line of succession, recognizing Jehanne as his sole heir. In the event of her death without any children, the throne would pass to her sister, Marie. In 1344, Jehanne was crowned as the sole monarch of Naples. The 14th century was an exceptionally violent and chaotic period of time and this is reflected in Jehanne’s reign, which was marked by infighting among the descendants of Charles II de Naples: the kings of Hungary (descendants of Charles Martel d'Anjou), the Tarantos (descendants of Philippe Ier de Tarente); the Durrazos (descendants of Louis de Gravina), and the Sicilians (descendants of Eléonore d'Anjou and Federico III di Sicilia). The most notorious event in her reign was the murder of her first husband, Endre. He was murdered by members of the nobility, but whether Jehanne was involved or not is unknown. Her support of some of the Antipopes did not help her precarious situation either. In 1382, Jehanne was assassinated on the orders of Charles, duc de Duras (a descendant of Louis de Gravina).
