Ahhhhhhhh hmm. See here’s the thing; I’m not really even sure what the “popular fics” in the fandom are only because every fic I read is a great fic and all fics deserve to “popular”. But I do know what you mean… the fandom Classics and all that… I usually only rec fics that I have read, because I’m weird that way. I know Alexx keeps a few lists (since she’s a lot more organized than I, LOL, and literally goes through the entire Ao3 library of fics as opposed to me and my bookmarks, LOL):

About Sleep and Coffee and the Existence of Fate by Atiki (E, 17,426 w. || Fluff, Marriage Proposal, Humour, 5+1) – Naturally, John was startled when suddenly the ultimate solution occurred to him: Marriage. This was, of course, a bit of a fundamental problem rather than an actual solution. One didn’t simply use the words “Sherlock” and “marriage” within the same sentence. Not even in a hypothetical context. Five times John kind of wanted to propose to Sherlock, and one time he didn’t have to.

With All My Heart by QuinnAnderson (E, 19,257 w. || Red Marks / Soulmates || Magical Realism, Growing Up, First Kiss / Time, Falling in Love) – AU in which every time a person falls in love, a red line like a tally mark appears on their wrist. Sherlock is determined to keep himself from ever gaining one of these marks for fear that love will corrode his mental faculties. Then he meets John Watson.

The Real Meaning of Idioms by feverishsea (T, 21,691 w. || Texting, Humour, Post S2) - After two weeks away, John finally texts Sherlock. He doesn’t expect Sherlock to respond. He doesn’t expect Sherlock to keep texting him. And he really doesn’t expect things to spiral out of control so rapidly.
