Sumi Brush (2023)

Unlike the realism of western painting, the aim of sumi-e painting has been to convey the essence of whatever is depicted. East Asian flora and landscapes are most common, and nature's harmony is expressed through the painter. The combination of black ink and thin absorbent paper afford little room to overwork the surface. Because of this, one must be mindful of the brush, its load, how diluted the black ink has become, and how pressure is applied to each gesture.

In 1948 the Nakba took place, and in essence, has continued to this day. The ongoing ethnic cleansing of historic Palestine has been condemned by human rights organisations, and is illegal according to international law. While oppression of the indigenous Palestinians receives scant mention in western media, their territorial dispossession proceeds at an unyielding pace. The BDS movement highlights institutional complicity in the ongoing injustice, and advocates for consumer, academic and cultural boycotts.

Flying Colours (2023) 🕊️🍉🇵🇸

As the Palestinian flag is banned in the occupied territories, slices of watermelon containing the Palestinian national colours came to be a symbol of resistance against the colonial occupation. The Palestinian people have so far endured 75 years of systematic oppression and territorial displacement. The recent events in Jenin, and ongoing settler violence throughout the West Bank are part of the ongoing ethnic cleansing of Palestine, and it the moral and legal right of the indigenous Palestinian people to resist the illegal colonisation of their land. Jenin refugee camp is one of 68 that have formed since the Nakba of 1948. Donations to help shelter the displaced and rebuild the camp can be made to interpal.org
