The Entire Lore of the Moonwingian Language Family (I Guess)

Today I've got a message from @niniralin asking me to reveal some lore behind East Moonwingian. Here you go!

Moonwingian family is used for communication in the Fairy Realm, which is a place in the universe of my books - The City of Witches, which you can read on Scribble Hub or listen to on Youtube, and Curse Therapy Journal, which I plan on releasing after the weekend. As of now it only really appears as some names, but I plan to place one incoming arc of TCoW in the Fairy Realm, so it will get some presence and relevancy.

It is named after the Moonwing Archipelago, where it is used. East Moonwingian is used in East Moonwing Island and West is used in West Moonwing Island. (Yes, those are also countries.) In addition West Moonwingian is a local lingua franca, but not global.

It is not really known today what Proto-Moonwingian was like. The Proto-Moonwingian society was non-literate. If knowledge needed to be preserved they used pictures made in clay or wax tablets. But aside from numbers and some magical symbols those pictures were more like cave drawings than actual logography.

Then there was an anomaly called The Great Connection, which allowed to travel between the Fairy Realm and the Human Realm. It is not known who caused it, but it was some fairy alchemist experimenting with the five elements to create their own world. After they caused The Great Connection they disappeared and became known as The One Who Time Forgot. (And I'm using they, because it forgot even their gender.)

The first humans to arrive on Moonwing Archipelago came from Britain and with them they brought some writings in Old English. Those writings were seen by Sijatinakso the Writer who created the Old Moonwingian alphabet inspired by them.

Over time the rising differences in the evolution of language and culture between the East and the West caused the society to split. Today both islands have vastly different societal norms, traditions and languages. (Not to mention that the West basically turned into a mafiacracy.) Both also have their own literary language pioneers. East loves the works of Umi from Ampi E and West delights in Khoti Kniki and Sampati Īsiāk.

How to differenciate between the three languages?

Old - It has ä

East - It has no š and no o

West - It has ky and long vowels ā and ī

Written for the story I'm writing for the new MacGuffinsUwrite event by @moonfeatherblue! Because I couldn't write in English, I had to write in a conlang and then attempt translation. And don't worry if you don't understand. It will make sense in context.

i know an engineer-type dude who said fiction bored him, because fiction is mostly-formulaic and tropey, and you can generally guess what’s gonna happen next, and yada yada

so his solution for this problem was… to solely read serial web novels in languages that (1) he did not speak, and (2) for which there was no actual translation, fan or otherwise

apparently, the combined forces of “trying to figure out WTF is going on via the power of Google Translate" + “cultural differences in storytelling conventions” + “the inherent randomness of where the hell amateur authors are gonna take their plots”—those all mashed up to make stories that were unpredictable enough to keep him guessing all the time

then he described to me this totally batshit-sounding Hungarian story he’d been obsessively reading once a week for years

and god i think about him all the time.  like.  that is the most wild way to process fiction that i have ever heard of, but also, i’ve gotta admire the sheer chaos energy of it
