Today In History
Countee Cullen, poet, novelist, children’s writer, and playwright, was born on this date May 30, 1903.
Cullen was a major contributor to the “Harlem Renaissance.” His life story is essentially a tale of youthful exuberance and talent of a star that flashed across the African American firmament and then sank toward the horizon.
“What is Africa to me:
Copper sun or scarlet sea, Jungle star or jungle track,Strong bronzed men, or regal black… Women from whose loins I sprang… When the birds of Eden sang? One three centuries removed… From the scenes his fathers loved, spicy grove, cinnamon tree… What is Africa to me?” - Countee Cullen from “Heritage”

Noble Sissle and Eubie Blake’s Shuffle Along, a pioneer musical featuring Josephine Baker, Florence Mills, Caterina Jarboro, William Grant Still, Hal Johnson and others, opened at the 63rd Street Music Hall in New York City on this date May 23, 1921.
Sissle met Blake in 1915 as an aspiring lyricist and singer when they were both hired for an engagement with Joe Porter’s Serenaders at Riverview amusement park in Baltimore. They quickly formed a songwriting partnership—one that would last for 60 years.

Today We Honor Donna Summer
LaDonna Adrian Gaines better known as Donna Summer, was a singer/songwriter who gained prominence during the disco era of the 1970s, and became known as the “Queen of Disco.”
A five-time Grammy Award winner, Summer was the first artist to have three consecutive double albums reach number one on the U.S. Billboard chart.
Summer first rose to fame the mid-’70s, thanks to “Love to Love You Baby.” The song, with Summer’s whispered vocals and orgasmic groans helped define the mid-‘70s disco trend and hit No. 2 in 1976. Summer followed the song with such hits as “I Feel Love,” “Last Dance” and a disco-fied version of the Richard Harris hit “MacArthur Park,” which outdid Harris’ version by hitting No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 singles chart. It was Summer’s first of four chart-toppers.
But with her 1979 album “Bad Girls,” Summer broke out of the disco mold as the genre, which had become renewed by the success of the “Saturday Night Fever” soundtrack, was feeling a backlash. “Bad Girls” demonstrated Summer’s vocal and stylistic range and produced two No. 1 hits, “Hot Stuff” and “Bad Girls,” as well as a Top 10 ballad, “Dim All the Lights.”
And, in 1983’s “She Works Hard for the Money,” became a big radio hit.
Recording Academy President Neil Portnow said. “Her talent was a true gift to the music industry.”

Albert Einstein once said his 2nd-best idea (after the theory of relativity) was soft-boiling an egg at the same time as he was cooking his soup, so he could get two meals and only have to wash one pot.

The Ouija Board named itself.
According to its inventors, “Ouija” was the game’s response to the question of what it wanted to be called.
They also claim that when they asked it what Ouija means, it ‘replied’: “Good luck.”

In the 1950’s drug stores not only filled your prescription, but there was usually a food counter, ice cream and coffee. My Great Uncle Angelo worked as a soda clerk in the New York suburbs where a man named Bill would come in and flirt with him.
Tumblr media
At a time when being gay could cause you to be arrested, Bill and Angelo, fell in love and began their lives together by renting a home in Fire Island where they could escape on weekends.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They soon built a home and life together as part of a migration of gay men from NYC that was beginning to happen. It was a quieter time, decades before Stonewall or the heyday of the "gay 70's".
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As time passed, they helped to build a growing gay community there, where men were free to be, share, and discuss life. They would reminisce about the days when sharply dressed gay men went to the Bon Soir to hear a 20-something Barbra Streisand.

My great Uncles Angelo and Bill were never legally married. Bill died of cancer before he could see gay marriage legalized. But they lived together their whole lives, spending winters in Manhattan, and summers in Fire Island.
