yeah the part in Lisa Frankenstein where the creature softly kissed Lisa before electrocuting her to death in her step-sister's tanning booth did, in fact, get to me. yeah what can I say I guess I'm just a romantic.

was watching a movie made in 2002 and for the first time in my life I was genuinely thrown off by how far away the early 2000s are now. it honestly feels just as distinct to me as the way the 70s, 80s, or 90s do.
Like people don't dress or talk or style themselves in that way anymore. Interior design doesn't look that way anymore. Objects don't look like that anymore. Some of those objects don't exist anymore. Even the way people act in a cultural and social sense, seems so different.

Honestly loki in avengers (2012) was lightning in a bottle in terms of having a Fun Villain that the mcu has pretty much never had again. Can you even name five other villains across the mcu’s 24 movies? Of course you can’t, they’re all unmemorable or insufferably dull (yes, that includes thanos). The only slight exception I can really think of is Hela. And the mcu kept trying to recreate it but they kept failing because none of them actually understand what makes loki fun!
They’ve tried everything that they think people like about loki (sadboys with ideologies and Tragic Backstories) but the reality of what makes him good is so much simpler lmao
Loki is a fun villain and as popular as he was in avengers because he is the only person in that movie who is enjoying himself. That’s it. That’s all it is. He’s hurting people and destroying things and he looks good while doing it! He’s smiling! He’s having a good time! When you’re dealing with a simple good vs evil plot like a superhero movie normally does, your heroes are not allowed to have fun because they have stakes to worry about. They have something to lose and something to fight for. Your villain is your chance to let SOMEONE in the story have fun, because they don’t have morals to worry about. No matter what happens, they can probably find a reason to be petty and cruel and get a smile out of it.
And that’s why I think the “I don’t enjoy hurting people” line of the loki show was more of a bad omen than we gave it credit for. Because mcu loki DOES get satisfaction out of hurting people. He is not a good person. That’s something he should have to put in the work to learn instead of just having it be a retconned trait of his. I’m tired of how sanitized these villains have become. It is possible to create a complex narrative and a complex character out of a cruel character, and I think loki would be better if it had started there.
Just. Let villains be unapologetically cruel again! Let them have fun! This applies to non-marvel shit too I’m tired of nuanced character-driven stories in my Disney animation movies bring back the Disney villain 2021

Am I an Annabeth apologist? No. "apologist" implies she's done something wrong when Annabeth Chase has never done anything wrong in her life ever

Zuko may have started off as an average or poor fire bender as a child, but he also progresses with his bending substantially throughout the series and by book 3 he is a powerful and formidable bender. I'm surprised that this is even up for debate.
And I think this perception of Zuko being somehow forever stuck as an average bender comes from the fact that this dude has the absolute misfortunate of constantly battling it out with: the literal avatar, prodigies (katara and toph and azula), and the canonical best fire benders in the world (his father and azula again)... but none of that changes the fact that Zuko is extremely powerful. And its especially ironic that this perception of Zuko as a subpar firebender/bender seems to be so pervasive because by season 3, Zuko is beginning to beat the benders that people consistently seem to argue that Zuko could never measure up to. Like the first time Zuko ever redirects lightning is Ozai's lightning and he does so successfully!
and I do wish we had more time to see Zuko's bending prowess after the Firebending Masters episode because once Zuko is no longer relying on his anger and rage to fuel his fire bending, he is operating on a new level.
Like I know for some it's akin to sacrilege to even consider Zuko being on the same playing field as Azula, and to be clear, I am in no way claiming that he's more powerful than her, but I also don't think it's a coincidence that after his realization about fire bending, the last two battles he has with his sister end with a stalemate (he and Azula use the exact same move on the airship, and the resulting explosion actually knocks Azula back further) and then him winning the Agni Kai (which yes, I know who technically won the Agni Kai is heavily debated, but imo the entire battle was a subversion of their typical dynamic wherein Zuko was sure of himself while Azula wasn't, and once Azula realized that she wasn't going to beat him purely through raw bending, she resorted to targeting Katara).
I fear that "fire bending didn't come easy to zuko" and "zuko isn't a prodigy" (both true) has somehow snowballed into "zuko is a bad or at best average fire bender".... which simply isn't true, especially by the end of book 3
