it was stark, how her gaze had flickered away from him and sought to land anywhere but his face. out of character for her to say the very least. for her entire life, it was rare she’d found it hard to stare directly into anyone’s face. there was hardly ever any reason to feel like she shouldn’t. it was her right to command space, to demand attention. even under the scrutiny of people she hated or who held power over her, nevaeh would always look them in the eye. she had nothing to fear, nothing to be sorry for.

this was different, though. nevaeh felt something she hadn’t felt in years: guilt. it crawled under her skin and made her feel so, so uncomfortable. she and oliver were not a thing and she’d never had the expectation that they ever would be. they were each other’s easy option; the most familiar and simple thing to come back to, like the one thing on every menu you gravitated to when all the other options felt too complicated or different. she had to admit it felt strange to be flirted with by someone and realize so abruptly that she simply did not care. her usual carefree impulsiveness was muted when the stranger had bought her a drink, had complimented her and asked for a dance. she’d went along with it, because that was what she usually did. it was muscle memory to fall into the arms of a hot stranger in the middle of a dance floor… but her mind was somewhere else entirely.

when she’d kissed them and let their hands wander down below her hips, halfway to drunk and a little irritated, she’d only been thinking of oliver. she’d partly went off with them to get him out of her head, because she should enjoy it, she always did. but it had backfired completely. it’d only made it worse. she hadn’t enjoyed a moment of it and immediately wished she hadn’t. not once in her life had she felt a regret so strong it nearly sobered her completely up again. she’d pulled away abruptly, nearly tore herself away and bumped into the people behind her.

no, was all she could think. no, no… god fucking damn it, no. as she’d walked off she thought she heard them call out to her in confusion over the music, but she’d ignored it. she’d needed to clear her head, and just as she’d thought it, there he was. like she’d conjured him from the thoughts alone. though suddenly, terribly, he was all she wanted in the moment, she was finding it hard to reconcile with the feelings that thrashed around inside her at what had just happened and the fact that he was now standing directly in front of her.

“ i don’t feel good… ” she croaked, and it was true. she felt horrible, and she knew it wasn’t the drinks this time, not entirely. “ home, home, can… take me home?? please?? ”
