"80s prairie resurgence vibe" is exactly right! I loved Kirsten the most because her life was so RELATABLE!
My bedroom, and my life, looked like a school room in the 50s. My bed, my dollhouse, my horse ranch toy, my teddy bear, my blankets, EVERYTHING was homemade. My dollhouse and horse ranch kicked ass though.
the twin are DEFINITELY the rich kids, I didn't even know the existence of most of what they were talking about until the 2000s. It's cool that they talked about grunge while living in Seattle though.
They also talked about girl power which was fun, though even as a kid I knew girl power was mostly a marketing ploy, Nicki is over here having a full blown existential crisis over it.
A true 90s experience would have been a giant looney tunes t shirt.

We didn't have a pizza Hut anywhere near our small town but Holy cow do I want that book it play set!!!! It's incredible! Those red cups!! 😍
They unfortunately did not talk about beanie babies, Lisa franks, butterfly clips, or charm bracelets (Italian charms?).
But they talked about Powerpuff girls, which was kickin' and kind of surreal.
I remember collecting beanie baby cards because Mom didn't see the point of beanie babies but *I* could afford the cards! I had a little photo album I lovingly put them in ❤️ treasures. I even had one teeny beanie, Inch the Inchworm, magnificent.
It really was a big deal getting a gel pen, and a Lisa frank notebook?!! Win!
I had some Dear America books also, But I LONGED AND YEARNED for Marissa Moss's Amelia books, they were too expensive and did not show up at thrift stores so no go 😔
I think the big problem with the Isabel and Nicki book is that when you look at the authors, there are six of them. The books wasn't written by an author, it was written by a comittee. A comittee of strong accomplished women, but a comittee nonetheless. It's a sanitized generalized and idealistic portrayal of the 90s. Most of the drama comes from the personal lives of the girls and I did not feel there.was any historical education going on. It really wasn't 'American Girl', it could have been any old book.
I understand I have strong nostalgia connected to American girl. I did enjoy the book and I do want some of the accessories. But overall I don't feel like the 90s was represented well and I don't think any historical events really taught or talked about.
The illustrations were very good, I did enjoy them, and actually I thought they were the best illustrations on a long time for the brand.
Wouldn't it be fun if the 90s American girl characters actually reflected the 90s? I was literally actually 9 in 1999 like Isabel and Nicki. Imagine, being a kid in stuck in the middle of
-the satanic panic,
-stranger danger,
-massive mill shut downs that caused towns to wither,
-and Mambo Number 5 being played on repeat on the Disney Channel

What is your favorite Barbie or the 90s?
I've been thinking about this for a few days and trying to think of a good answer.
The Barbie I am personally most nostalgic for is the 1994 Olympic Gymnast Barbie, but I have said that before so I really want to give a unique answer.
So I've been trying to think of another Barbie I can name that I haven't talked about before. A bit of searching and I found a Barbie that I never would have remembered by name but I suddenly had such a strong sense memory of the outfit she was wearing.
This is Bubble Angel Barbie. I am not quite sure how to describe the garment she is wearing - it is a bodysuit where the legs are sheer sparkly tights and the bodice is like a leotard made of crinkly material, with an ankle length overskirt. I remember this outfit so clearly but have no memory of the bubbles or her wings.
I can only assume I lost those immediately but repurposed the outfit for other uses.
