Whenever Canada isn’t depicted in post apocalyptic dystopia fiction, it’s doing a completely different type of post apocalyptic dystopia than the States.
If America’s doing Mad Max, Canada’s doing 1984. If America’s doing The Hunger Games, Canada’s doing The Walking Dead. If aliens come down to Earth and blow up the White House, the machines take over Canada and blow up Parliament Hill.
Both are equally bad and miserable to live in, but they’re just different enough for the Canadians to feel condescendingly smug.

Argh... so I've been reading in Scum Villain's Self-Saving System (SVSSS) fandom recently. And it's given me a new pet peeve about formatting and TTS. A bunch of the authors in that fandom are using black lens brackets to indicate the 'system' voice, 【like this】, because the original novels do, and, yeah... unfortunately that's not always compatible with TTS (definitely not with google's TTS engine, and testing with various other online TTS engines gives mixed results).

YUP! They get read aloud! Every. Single. Time. They. Appear. Open black lens bracket like this close black lens bracket.
Please resist using the novel's formatting and just use regular square brackets instead! Which do not get read aloud unless there's a space in a bad position, [ like this ]. If you want to be fancy, maybe use <tt>...</tt> formatting or a monospaced font such as courier to make it stand out more as something mechanical.

Which reminds me, another bad formatting choice I've bumped into multiple times (and I can't remember if I've mentioned this one before) is where authors use something <like this> to indicate things like speaking mind-to-mind, or that someone is speaking a foreign language (despite the actual text still being in English). Cool. Neat. Also not TTS compatible, unless you like repeatedly hearing less than and greater than mixed into the text. But guess what - there are already perfectly serviceable ‹single› and «double» angled quotation marks that could be used instead - and since they're recognized as actual quotation marks, they don't get read aloud! Shocking, I know.
Those angled quotation marks could also be another decent option for indication of things like the system voice, obviously.

You look at enough reconstructed archaeological ceramic pots in museums, you start to go progressively more insane. What were the people who refit these thinking.
You see plenty of nice archival, soluble adhesives, don’t get me wrong. And you got the formerly very common plaster reconstruction—we don’t love that these days, but it makes sense. Then you see a jar that’s at most 10% original pottery sherds embedded in pure white plaster making up the majority of the pot and just go, why. Why would you do this.
You get pots held together with bandages and gauze. Pots held together with masking tape from the 1980s that flakes off when you touch it. Pots where the plaster pieces have been painted to match the rest of the pot, and then the rest of the pot has been overpainted as well to match the plaster. Pots where the pieces were not fitting back together very well but god damn some conservator was gonna MAKE them fit. Pots where the inside is slathered with some reddish putty. Pots where there’s a note tucked inside written on the back of a library checkout slip “Already done—3/12/66” and what is done is that the inside is slathered liberally with cement.

Aprils work is Pompeii themed, inspired by photos I took in the House of the Vettii. The illustration is named Buried and is of the remains of the villa’s north courtyard, bathed in streaming morning light, with a mysterious occupant. It's summer, which means we're almost there! Podcast Girls Week is a week long prompt-based event where fans are encouraged to create works celebrating their favorite podcast women. This year, the event will take place on July 8-14.
Monday: What about sad wet cat women? Highlight a podcast starring women in the leading role(s).
Tuesday: This too is yuri... Spotlight a F/F ship (or platonic or familial relationship between women if that's your preference).
