If you've noticed people locking down their fics over the past 18 hours, it's because of this lore dot fm fiasco that's been on TikTok.

Lore dot fm would like to be "Audible for Fan Fiction". What they do is scrape Ao3 and pull the text into the app to be read by an automated voice.

There's a reason people are hesitant to trust the company (whether or not it's a good reason is entirely up to the reader):

Some people did a deeper dive on the who and what, but the tldr on that is this CEO in the videos (who's also the CEO of Spinoff AI) is not exactly married to the truth.

Here's what Spinoff is, per their app store page (in case anyone's wondering):

Spinoff lets you become the hero in any story with your favorite characters. Choose from thousands of storylines or create your own and get the ending you deserved. Expect the unexpected because you never know what's going to happen next on Spinoff.

So... AI generated fan fiction. This is one of the reasons why fan fiction authors are a little hesitant to have our stuff put on lore dot fm.

Companies need money to be able to maintain apps. Apparently, the company that owns Lore dot fm isn't exactly flush with it. You're not going to have a financially insolvent company that's hosting a major app out of the goodness of their hearts.

For one, they can't. No financing. For another, companies like money. Sort of their whole thing.

How are they going to recoup those finances using our fan fiction? Or, how are they going to make this worth the expense? I think it's safe to at least note that they will have to find a way.

anyways, there’s a new app that is putting fanfictions from ao3 as an audible book without author’s permission. it’s called lore fm.

the only way to opt out is by emailing them? which is completely bs. ao3 is completely okay with it, unfortunately.

so as an author, im asking, please don’t put fanfics on here unless you ask the author specifically and they okay it.

AO3 IS IN TROUBLE IF CALIFORNIAN AGE VERIFICATION LAW PASSES

An upcoming Age verification bill centered in California will be voted on Monday-- And as always,instead of actually protecting kids, it will lead to more online censorship and privacy risks, as it will force websites hosting to verify their users age by sending their ID, your browser history would be linked to it. if you live California, call your reps and tell them to oppose the bill AB3080 as it highly unconstitutional.

They also deem LGBT content harmful to minors, as well as mentions of weapons and tobacco, putting them on the same level as NSFW content.

Since AO3 headquarters reside in California, much like Reddit, Twitter,Discord and Youtube (and others) who knows how bad the effects would be. Instead of just effecting Californians (even then its concerning.) the effects would be US or even worldwide. VPNs wont help.

A reminder that Jazwares CEO - the company behind toy brands like Kellytoy, Squishmallows, Bum Bumz, Hello Kitty, Pokemon (in North America), Nerf, and many others - is a staunch supporter of Israel, with half of their recent intern cohort from Reichman University being called back to fight in the IOF. Not only this, but he and his wife Laura are working with the organization known as Brothers For Life that gives aid to Israeli soldiers, as well as supporting the infamous Canary Mission, which is responsible for doxxing pro-Palestinian students.

Buying new Jazwares products is going towards a CEO who supports genocide, please continue to boycott Jazwares brands and seek out alternative brands or strictly buy from secondhand sources when looking for new gifts for yourself or your loved ones.
