hello fellow autism haver i watched a talk on youtube once and now I am convinced I have it totally figured out (I definitely do not). According to the talk you kind of need 4 things for people to be interested in being your friend
Proximity (are you around this person often enough. the more times, and the smaller the group, the better)
Similarity (Is there something for them to pick you out over other randos, shared interest/identity etc)
Reciprocity (do nice things for them, and they'll "owe you one". most people actually like this; if they don't respond that's kind of a signal they don't want to be your friend. also don't keep strict track of this, the point is that you collectively "owe each other" to the point where you'll want to be in each other's life naturally)
disclosure (say vulnerable things, be embarrassing in front of them etc. this is the level people are at when they start joke insulting each other)
smaller groups are good for proximity, and are bad for similarity. big groups are good for similarity but it's hard to have repeat interactions; proximity is bad. so ye. maybe the bicycling group was just Too Big
oh ya I mean. there were HUNDREDS of people, it was more like an event than a group thing
but honestly the part that Sorta makes the whole making friends thing difficult is that i don't interact with like any groups at all- like i literally have 0 network at all beyond my family and part-time job. beyond that i really sorta only know a *couple* people around the city but wouldn't say I'm able to regularly meet with any of em

... really i mean nobody even complimented the bike (though to be fair- EVERYONE had a bike and some people had like. like ahhhh. yesterday i went downtown to join a whole bunch of people ride bikes around the city and it was the most engaging thing I've done like ever!! . i had 0 conversations with anyone despite participating in a shared hobby... sad .....

like I don't exactly have any other idea how to Initiate The Friend Making Process. the autism prevents me from doing a lot of natural engagement for one reason or another. Either I'm too anxious to say shit or if a conversation doesn't include My Interest im just a wet noodle on the pavement
