Yaezakura | Multi-Layered Cherry Blossom
When metereologists make cherry blossom forecasts, they are referring to the Somei Yoshino variety which has a very short season — from late March to early April, to be exact. However, hanami forecasts don't usually include the early or late-blooming cherry trees, which are also quite lovely.
Yaezakura, which means "multi-layered cherry blossom," is a catch-all term for cherry blossoms with more than five petals. Starting to bloom in mid-to-late April, yaezakura have petals that range from light to dark pink. Because of the double layers of petals, they are known as a symbol of strength — in comparison to the delicate and fleeting Somei Yoshino.

ナラノヤエザクラとは…
ナラノヤエザクラは八重桜の一品種です。
「いにしへの奈良のみやこの八重ざくらけふ九重ににほひぬるかな」
(伊勢大輔)
当時京都では珍しかった奈良の八重桜が宮中に献上され、
宮中で受け取る役であった伊勢大輔が
藤原道長より即興で詠むように言われ
詠んだ歌が有名。
牧野富太郎氏の指導の下、山田壽雄氏が描画した
ナラヤエザクラが掲載されていました。
