“ I grabbed pizza and some smoothies, so if you want them you gotta let me in first, “ he calls through her door, hoping that the mention of food will encourage her to open it.

Helene had been avoiding everyone and everything for the last few days it seemed, to the point where even her father could not get in touch with her, which prompted him to send Colleen round, but she didn’t even answer the door to her best friend, claiming that she was unwell and didn’t want to pass a bug to her as well. That was a complete fabrication, of course, there was no sickness involved in her current state.

“ I hope there is pizza, Joakim. I’m looking a bit worse for wear so if I open that door to no food you’re in a lot of trouble, “ she says, making her way towards it and unchaining it to let him in even though she knew there would be a thousand questions.

“ Jävla skitstövel.. why didn’t you call me, Helene? “ Joey says as he steps through the doorway, placing the food and drinks down immediately before moving closer to the woman.

Helene feels her breath still a little when he comes nearer and reaches both his hands up to either side of her face. His eyes are inspecting her busted lip and the faded bruise coating the swell of her cheek. There is a clear indication of a ring marking printed into her flesh which tells him the blow was forceful. He bristles, but he tries his best to tone down the anger.

“ You know by now I just deal with this stuff on my own. There isn’t any point in getting everyone else involved in my battles, even if I struggle to cope half the time. I’m sure it will all die off soon, though.. his visits are becoming less frequent, “ she can recall that much at least, in her troubled state.

“ That’s not how you should be handling abuse, Helene. That man has gotten away with too much for you to be allowing it the way you seem to do. I know you’re scared and I know you think it wouldn’t make a difference because of the people who he knows, being a copper, but you have to tell authorities, “ he lightly scolds her for the continuation of her suffering, even if he knows how hard it is for her to do those things, because it’s now time for her to actually put her foot down.

“ Joakim.. “ she begins, a breathy sigh released as she swipes some of her hair our of her eyes and he automatically places a kiss over her brow. “ I have tried in the past, but connections make it so much more difficult than you’d think. Everyone he’s ever worked with in that department revere him too much for me to get any kind of help or protection. “

Joey huffs in response to this, the anger that had built behind his eyes earlier now surfacing once again, but he makes sure to step away and retreat to the pizza box so he can open it and get her a straw for her smoothie, while he answers her. There is every reason for him to be angry, naturally, but he knows the consequences of being that way around his lady and so, every opportunity he gets, he keeps it from her entirely.

“ I’ll help you find someone who will listen, älskling. This isn’t happening anymore. I worry about you from the moment I rise till the moment I go back to bed.. which, you know, I always will because you’re my girl and I want to keep you safe from harm all of the time, but knowing Joel is out there running free and not being punished for what he’s put you through, doesn’t sit right with me. I can’t just let him walk, “ he utters.

Helene approaches the counter then where he is standing and cutting the pizza into sections. She grabs the smoothie and a smile lifts the corners of her mouth instantly when she takes a sip, delighting in the taste of banana. He knew it was her most favoured flavour, of course, because they had been together a year or so now, but it was always a nice reminder when he did opt to bring those things to her attention like this. Reaching a hand forward, she makes a grab for a pizza slice, too.

“ I’m always afraid of getting anyone else involved because I don’t want my loved ones suffering the same fate. My bestie knows about Joel and his temper and what he has done in the past, but I always implore her to never go after him either. She is like a sister to me, Joakim.. I don’t know what I’d ever do if she got locked up on my behalf, “ she says, a tear falling.

Joey reaches his hand across the way and grabs hers, pulling it up to his lips after giving it a squeeze and presses a kiss over the back of it, then each knuckle. He takes his time while eyes are trained on her own at the same time, then he smiles. It’s a warm smile, filled with hope and promises she had never been given before in her past relationships. To be fair, most of those were with boys and not men, while Joey was the embodiment of a man and a walking, talking example of how a woman was to be treated without any second guessing.

Helene melted in the palms of his hands whenever they were together and she longed for that feeling of home and comfort every second they were apart. It was a wildly different feeling to the one she had experienced while with Joel. He had made her feel tiny and weak, unable to speak up for herself or even to fight for herself whenever he was around and it impacted her entire personality. She used to be incredibly bubbly and a force to be reckoned with, but since he entered her life years ago, she hadn’t quite been the same.

“ I love you, Helene. I’ll always love you and protect you from harm. You just have to let me in a little more. Promise me? “ he pleads, taking a bite of the pizza as soon as he’s said this.

“ I love you, too, Joakim. Thank you for being the rock that I need.. it’s hard, but you’re right. I need to push a little harder and find someone willing to listen who will actually make some changes around here. He knows so many people, it’s difficult, but there must be some angle we can go from. There has to be a loophole in the system somewhere, “ she affirms.
