So, when I watched Chainsaw Man and met Kishibe, well, my brain went on...what if Leon? (I don't know if it's just me, but I had an Anakin of the clone wars vibe after drawing the inferior Leon XD)

CHAPTER 03
A melody echoed in the darkness. A distant echo that rocked him gently. It felt like a warm caress, not like the icy touch that nightmares brought him. They whispered words in his ear, promises and laughter that filled him with joy. It had been a long time since he had felt this way. He had missed the calm of dreaming in tranquility with no shadows lurking, no voices haunting him.
 "...on..."
Was someone speaking to him? It was a soft, soothing voice, a mumbled whisper.
 "...eon..."
It was getting more and more intense. He didn't want to wake up, but that voice was pulling him like a magnet.
"L... eon..."
He was sure he had heard that voice somewhere else.
 "Leon..."
***
His blue eyes parted lazily, blinking several times to get used to the light. He grunted as his muscles felt stiff. It felt like he had slept in a bad posture. He lifted his head and looked around to situate himself, only to meet an amber gaze watching him worriedly.
“Hey.” he greeted.
Ashley felt tingles at Leon's deep velvety voice, still half asleep. She smiled.
“How are you?" asked the agent, getting up from the chair in which he had fallen asleep.
“Better, thanks to you. Again.” She tried to joke with her hoarse voice and Leon felt bad for making her talk.  Ashley looked around the room. They had been moved and were now in two rooms, facing each other, with thick glass separating them. Ashley turned her head to one side of the bed, now with clean sheets and pulled herself upright with a groan of pain. Leon tensed.
“Hey, hey, hey, hey, don't strain Ashley.”
 She laughed.
“I already lost my strength yesterday.”
Leon looked at her hesitantly for a few seconds.
“Do you remember the other night?”
Ashley stared at an infinite point.
“It's kind of vague... but I remember a few things.”
Especially Leon's touch against her body. She remembered how he carried her in his arms, whispering softly to her, trying to keep her conscious. The way he carried her to her new room and laid her on the mattress. He remembered her pleas for him not to leave and how he took her hand to promise to stay with her.
He stayed until she was exhausted from pain and fever and then he was taken to the front room. Ashley raised her bandaged hand to her temple, trying to calm the migraine. She still had a high fever, her back was burning and her mind was spinning. She was shivering, but at the same time she couldn't stop sweating. She was a mess.
“Honestly, I never would have expected you to throw a heart rate monitor through the air.” she heard Kennedy's chuckle trying to cheer her up.  Ashley looked up at him, dumbfounded.
“Did I do that?
 Leon looked surprised.
“Don't you remember?
Ashley pulled the covers up to cover her arms from the cold.
“I...I...remember...Salazar, then his mechanical voice and...the rest is kind of a blur, everything was hot, it was moving so fast.” she clutched her temples “I followed a smell, I think…”
Leon raised an eyebrow.
“A smell?”
Ashley was still deep in thought, trying to remember.
“I think it was the smell of your gum.”
Leon didn't believe her words. He glanced over at the table in his room, where the only small box he'd been allowed to keep rested, and then turned his eyes back to her. Was she telling him she'd tracked some gum through aisles of a 200-meter ward?
“Are you sure about that?”
Ashley's shoulders shrugged.
“Now that I can get a good whiff of them I can say yes, I guess.”
“Do you smell them now?” He gestured with his head toward the table.
She nodded.
“Honestly, they've helped me sleep.” Those words caused a faint blush to settle on her cheeks, but she tried not to let Leon see it. Instead she heard an amused chuckle.
“It had to be something, because your sense of direction is less than ideal.”
She gave him an indignant look and pouted.
“That's not true.”
Leon laughed mockingly.
“If you say so.”
They both laughed softly and felt the accumulated stress melt away. They chatted about trivial things, especially Ashley's eagerness to shower again. Being able to talk to someone face to face helped her state of mind. Leon hadn't realized how much he had missed talking about stupid things with someone. Still he didn't want to overdo it, he could see her still dizzy and her shaking hands betrayed the discomfort in her body, still she smiled at his jokes with dazzling joy.
Time flew by and before they knew it, Hunnigan called for the noon review at the same time they knocked on Ashley's door. Leon decided to start filling out the outstanding reports with Ingrid, while Ashley was being examined. They cleaned her wounds, changed her bandages and gave her medicine.  Leon noticed Ashley cringe as the doctors dressed in quarantine suits approached her. When she took off her shirt he looked away quickly, but he could make out an ugly bruise running the length of her shoulder, arm and back. He guessed it would be the side she kicked the door down with.
He couldn't help but snicker.
To think that he would see the president's daughter kick down a door while being chased by doctors was memorable.
Speaking of the president.
“Does Mr. Graham know about yesterday's incident?”
 Hunnigan sighed.
“Unfortunately, yes. He asked to have access to direct notifications in case of alarms. He didn't see the recordings, thank God, although I don't know how long I can hold them.Sooner or later he'll see them.”
Ingrid looked up to see Leon's face, his hands paused over the keyboard in thought.
“Are you worried that he'll see your intervention?”
It was subtle, but a muscle in the man's neck gave a tug.
He sighed.
“I'd be lying if I said I wasn't, but I'm more concerned about the position he might take on Ashley after seeing the recordings.”
“Regarding her protection?”
 Leon nodded.
“I hope he doesn't decide to lock her up so she can't be taken away again.”
“It's going to be tough.” Hunnigan whispered softly, making Leon look at her.
“Yes, it will be.”
He heard voices on the other side and turned to see Ashley sitting on the edge of the bed with her feet dangling. One of the medics helped her down and held her up when she stumbled as she stepped on the floor with her injured soles. Leon jumped up without thinking and walked over to the glass window. One medic helped her walk and the other pulled a chair over to where the officer was standing. He looked at her with concern.
“You shouldn't get up.”
 Ashley smiled at him.
“Can't I have a conversation next to a person?” Leon looked at her and couldn't help but laugh and took a seat.
“Leon” his name sounded soft as a caress on her lips “I'd like to meet Hunnigan, may I?”
The agent looked surprised but nodded and picked up the laptop. Ashley sat down carefully and wrapped some blankets around her legs.
“Thank you very much.” She thanked the doctors for a second before adding crestfallen “I'm sorry I made a scene yesterday.”
“Don't worry, Miss Graham, but be more careful from now on, okay?”
She nodded, still embarrassed, and folded her hands in her lap, waiting for Leon to come to her on the other side of the glass wall. On the full screen was Hunnigan, who greeted her.
“Good morning Miss Graham, nice to meet you.”
”Are you Ingrid Hunnigan? Nice to meet you too.”
Ingrid smiled.
“You don't have to treat me with so much respect, you can call me whatever you prefer.”
Ashley smiled impishly.
“Only if you call me Ashley.”
Leon laughed at Ashley's cheekiness and turned to Hunnigan, who was looking at her in surprise.
“Well, nice to meet you Ashley, I see that even being with Leon, you haven't forgotten to be polite.”
“Hey, I am polite.”  he defended himself, dramatically offended.
“You're just shameless.”
Ashley tried to hold back her laughter so her back wouldn't hurt.
“That's 100% true.” the blonde smiled .
This time Leon turned to her.
“I can't believe you took her side so quickly.”
“Given the ones you've told me. Although nothing beats…Luis's…”she whispered his name and her face darkened. Leon also looked at the ground as he remembered the man who had helped them so much and whom they had failed to save.
They both sighed.
Hunnigan felt the need to encourage them.
“When you get back you can have a few drinks in his name. I didn't know him, but the help he gave you saved my skin from being grilled meat in the president's oven.”
Ashley looked up at the mention of her father.
“How is my father doing? “
“The president is very concerned, but eager for you to come home.”
“Could I speak to him?”
Hunnigan declined.
“Unfortunately this is a confidential medical line, we don't want possible hacks of conversations with your father, after all, no one knows about all this.”
That's true. Behind closed doors no one knew anything about the kidnapping of the president's daughter.
As if it didn't happen.
“I see.” Ashley whispered apologetically. “Could you give him a message for me then?”
“I'm all ears.”
That voice....
Ashley's eyes widened wildly and she turned to the other side of the room, where the glass window faced the hallway.
Her eyes filled with tears.
“DAD!!!!” she shouted, tensing her muscles to run to him.
“Hey! Hey! Hey! Stop right there!!!!” Leon's alarmed voice stopped her. Ashley's father saw that Leon had suddenly stood up with his hands against the glass, wanting to stop her personally. The president turned to look at the agent silently.
“The doctors told you to be careful, okay?” His voice was calm and seemed to have brought the exalted Ashley to her senses. She stood up gently, resting her weight on the tips of her toes, where she was least injured, and walked, leaning against the wall. Leon followed her, glued to the glass. The president's eyes did not miss the agent's concern. He saw how he wanted to help her walk, but could only rest his hand on the thick glass as he slowly advanced beside her.
Ashley sobbed with tears in her eyes as she reached her father, resting her palms against the window, and he mimicked her.
“Oh, honey…” the man broke down too and tears spilled from his eyes. They both rested their foreheads against the glass, unable to hug. Leon looked at them with a smile on his face and felt joy coursing through his body. In those moments he was aware of his work and what he was fighting for.
To show a new dawn to those people who gave up.
“What are you doing here dad?” Ashley cried, trying to wipe away her tears and unable to undo the dazzling smile on her lips.
“I had to come. When I heard there was an incident yesterday, I called in a favor to come see you.”
“A favor?”
“Let's just say that after flying a fighter aircraft, I'm going to appreciate the comfort of my business travel more.
Ashley exclaimed in disbelief and Leon couldn't hold back a chuckle that got the president's attention.
“I have to admit you have some good friends among the pilots, Agent Kennedy.”
Leon stood up suddenly with his hands behind his back.
“I'm glad to know that my companions have helped get you here safely, sir.”
Graham laughed.
“Well, I got here in one piece, even if my stomach can't say the same.”
Ashley laughed still with tears in her eyes and her father rested his forehead against the glass again.
“I'm glad to see you feeling better, honey. I know I just came but I can't stay too long, I've already postponed several meetings and I can't disappear for that long. I'm really sorry.
“I know dad, you know that's nothing new. The fact that you crossed the Atlantic at the expense of your breakfast is enough for me, you couldn't have given me a better gift.”
Her father couldn't hold back his tears and wanted with all his might to walk through that door to embrace her, but he couldn't and it hurt like hell.
“Leon" he called the agent.
The man turned to him.
“Yes, sir?”
“There are no words to thank you for all you have done for Ashley, I don't know how to repay you for everything. I owe you.”
Leon gave a subtle smile, a little tense.
“Honestly, Mr. Graham, a good steak and 3 days of sleep is enough for me.”
Graham laughed and also felt the urge to hug the man who went alone on a suicide mission.
“I know a good chef, I'll tell him to prepare you the best meal for your return.”
Leon nodded gratefully and watched as father and daughter said their painful goodbyes. Unable to hug and feel each other's warmth, he could understand that feeling all too well, too much for his liking even. He watched Ashley stay glued to the glass until her father disappeared behind the door. She stood there for a few minutes staring out into the now empty hallway.
Leon turned back to the screen where Hunnigan was still logged on.
“Did you know he was coming?”
She denied, rubbing the bridge of her nose under her glasses.
“That's why all his plans for today were removed, how could I not have noticed?”
“I don't think you would have known he had boarded a fighter jet to cross the Atlantic” Ashley's laughter caught both of their attention.
She fell silent again and Leon decided it was time to leave Hunnigan.
“Tomorrow at the same time," she informed him.
“I'll be here, circling around like a hamster.”
And she hung up. Leon turned to Ashley as he saw her still standing there silently and then moved back to the wall separating them. Her amber gaze stared at a distant point, thoughtful and crestfallen. Her lips parted heavily and the words dragged between her teeth.
“What's it going to be like when we get back, Leon?”
He came closer, palms flat against the glass, but did not answer. He just stared at her too, deep in thought.
“I guess I'll go back to my missions and you can go back to college.”
She didn't answer, she stood still, processing his words and trying to really believe them. Then she raised her bandaged hand and placed it in front of Leon's within inches of hers.
“Do you really think I can get back to normal?”
Her amber eyes, still glassy from the encounter with her father and reddened, looked up at him pleadingly. Leon swallowed saliva at the intensity of her orbs. So much feeling in eyes that had seen horrors too soon. He wished he had never had to experience anything to do with bio-weapons. His blue eyes sank into the gold like water and he felt those feelings wash over him.
“When…” he whispered softly “I left Raccoon City I tried to forget about it, believing that if I did everything would go back to the way it was “he didn't want to break her, not more than she already was “ I'm not going to tell you it goes away, but it does get better, although you have to give it time.”
Ashley replied with a hmm and they stood there in silence for a few more minutes. They decided to sit down again and just chat about more banal things. What their favorite colors were, why beige was beige and white was white, what Leon's favorite chewing gum and jackets were and what music and hobbies Ashley liked. They passed the hours calmly, feeling the tension disappear and they could become oblivious to the monsters that lurked in the back of their minds.
But they knew that they would return at night.
Oh, and how they came back.
