After spending the day there a few weeks ago, Rachel Hawkins and I would be very good at leading a tour of the @brooklynmuseum entitled:
Women Who Have Had Enough of Your Shit
(Tag yourself I am wearing a red bow tie and staring into middle distance)

“Mrs. Alexander Cumming, née Elizabeth Goldthwaite, later Mrs. John Bacon”, 1770, John Singleton Copley, Brooklyn Museum.
I find this portrait very beautiful not only because of the wonderful silk satin gown Elizabeth Goldthwaite is wearing (look at that LOW neckline!), or the neckerchief in delicate lace or the charming bow at the front of ther dress (or could it be part of the neckerchief?), but look at that claroscuro. The way Singleton Copley manages to pull her presence from the darkness makes me think more of Baroque Dutch art than American portraits.
