high school au, pining, confession, car
i got two requests for this!!! so i hope it’s up to the hype. i always get carried away with hs aus. thank you anon!! ps. the song mentioned is chasing fire by lauv. a banger indeed.
It was Luke’s automatic duty -- like breathing, or walking -- to drive Julie home after a gig.
She was a new driver who was still uneasy about driving at night, and Alex would always end the night with Willie while Reggie and Flynn were always eager to delay their exit and have some more fun for a couple more hours. So when Luke got tired, and Julie and him found themselves hugging the walls of the venue or breathing heavily from a tiring set; it was customary for her to curl into the passenger seat while he pulled out of the alleyway or driveway.
It was also an excuse to spend 20 minutes alone with the beautiful girl, even if she would be half asleep sometimes when they drove home together.
Once in awhile, she would sneak him inside and let him stay over. (But they weren’t dating or anything, obviously, because dating within the band was terrifying.)
((Only because Luke knew that Julie held his love for music in her hands. And he didn’t know what would happen if he gave her the rest of him, too.))
Tonight, they had just played a party thrown by Julie’s friend Carrie Wilson, who happened to be the cousin of their ex-rhythm guitarist -- but a gig was a gig, and a lot of their classmates were going to be there, so it was a deal they were quick to take.
Following a six-song set and a lot of dancing, Luke felt a yawn crawling up his throat. Julie was standing off to his side, with her arm wrapped around his as if she were worried he was going to suddenly join the party and abandon her against the wall.
But he would never. In fact, he only moved closer to her and leaned his head on top of hers that was resting against his shoulder. When she offers her bottle of water, he gladly wraps his hand around her wrist to lift the bottle to his lips and hydrate.
“You wanna head out, Rockstar?”
Without even trying to yell over the music, she nods against his shoulder.
Warmth filling his chest, he winds his arm around her shoulders and leads her into the entryway where the coat closet lies. Slipping on both of their coats, he is sure to wave at Reggie and Alex as he slips open the front door and holds it open for Julie; signalling their exit.
Luke ignores the knowing grins he receives from his beloved bandmates, and slips his jean jacket over Julie’s thin sweatshirt after catching her hands rapidly rubbing up and down her arms to generate heat.
“No, Luke, keep your jacket. It’s freezing out here.”
“I’m hot-blooded. You’re right, it’s cold, so you definitely need this.”
Pouting, she tightens the wrap of the jacket around her. “You should just let me suffer the consequences of my mistakes.”
Jumping in front of her, he opens the passenger door as if it is a ritual between the two of them. “That won’t happen if I can help it.”
Julie just rolls her eyes -- she truly, painfully, has no idea how honest he is being.
Luke can tell she’s tired, so he does what he normally does and waits for her to start any conversation because he doesn’t want to push her. Soft music, Chasing Fire, plays through the speakers off of Julie’s playlist, and the lyrics seriously make Luke grip the steering wheel tight.
I was driving you home in the middle of the night, but I couldn’t bring myself to say goodbye
What if he did that tonight? What if he just… Sat in the car, and told her he loved her, and waited to see how she would react?
It would be so stupid. But luckily, stupid is Luke’s middle name.
“I love these drives,” Julie hums into the cold air, contrasting with Lauv’s voice. Her words fog up the window that she is resting her head against. “It’s so nice. Quiet, and dark, and just the two of us.”
Wow, she’s definitely exhausted. Sometimes Julie gets a little loopy and sentimental when she’s tired, but shit -- Luke’s heart pumps against his ribcage with a ferocity that can only be caused by Julie Molina.
So, since it’s late, he’ll play her game.
“Why do you think I always jump at the chance to drive you home?” Beat. “I just like spending time with you.”
“Really?”
God, does she really not know? Does she really not see it?
Has he been letting her feel unloved all this time?
“I thought it was obvious, Jules,” he tries to smirk but it really just is a wince. “You’re like my favorite person.”
The girl in the passenger seat stays quiet, knees tucked into her chest despite the seatbelt because the seat has practically molded to her body at this point. She belongs there, next to him.
“You’re mine,” he hears her sigh. It’s so quiet and is almost completely muffled by the sound of a passing semi truck, but he listens and he hears it.
It shouldn’t be what puts him over the edge.
But it is.
“You know I love you, right?”
Finally, her head lulls to her left so that she can face him. If he was able to look at her longer, he would see her eyes shining as if she was about to cry -- but he has to keep his eyes on the road. “I love you too, Luke. You know that.”
“No, it’s-” His knuckles bleach around the wheel. “I’m in love with you.”
Again, more silence. Luke doesn’t chance glancing at her through his peripherals because he doesn’t want to see her disgust.
He wishes so desperately that he could be looking at her, as focused on her as he is when they are on stage or at school or not in a car where their lives are in his hands. The quiet sinks into his stomach like a lead balloon, and he has just convinced himself that he’s ruined everything as he rounds the corner into her neighborhood, when-
“You’re in love with me? Actually?”
Luke scoffs. What kind of question is that? “It’s kind of hard not to be, Julie.”
The car rolls up in front of her house. He parks and turns the key in the ignition to turn it off, wondering if Julie is going to take the chance to run.
She doesn’t.
The second that he shifts to face her, he catches her face practically glowing -- she’s teary-eyed, but she’s smiling, and suddenly she is leaning across the center console and pressing her lips agsainst his with her soft hands on either side of his face.
“I love you, too. But like, the way you mean it.”
It’s his turn to be shocked. “Really?”
God, her smile makes him want to kiss her senseless; but she beats him to the punch. He wants to push for more, but the chaste kiss she gives him before responding will have to do-
“It’s kind of hard not to, Patterson.”
Alex, Reggie, and probably even his parents would beg to differ.
But none of them matter, because Julie is in front of him, and she loves him like he loves her.
When she invites to sneak him inside as she has done many nights in the past, she holds his hand this time around -- and he eventually does get to fulfill his wish as soon as they reach her bedroom.

lovebug - cth
Tumblr media
summary: a moment captured by ashton leads to an engagement present that the doves had no idea would ever exist.
author’s notes: alright guys, this is all thanks to the most amazing ask that left me floored and eager to write this up. i hope you all enjoy this and that lovebug is stuck in your head as it was mine for the past couple of days.
warnings: pure fluff and dovey (for once) being a soft human towards her soulmate, calum.
masterlist || request
It had happened almost by accident, a moment that was meant to be shared by just the two of them. But Ashton found himself in a lot of these moments when it came to Calum and Dovey, in little pockets of time where it seemed like they were both too lost in one another to realize anything else. He'd been early, the first guest to the monthly band family dinner that the Doves had been hosting since moving into their new house a few months back, Dovey claiming that they needed an excuse to use their new kitchen and what better way than celebrating with the band. He'd walked in through the side door which he knew Calum always kept unlocked since it was closer to his home studio and the guys could just come in and work on songs without ringing the doorbell and having Duke bark up a storm. He had expected to see the two of them procrastinating on making dinner, which was usually the case when it came to band dinner night, but he was instead met by the two of them dancing along to lovebug, a song that reminded Ashton of the Doves in general. He wasn't even sure why he did it but in an instant, he had his phone out and he was recording the moment, a fond smile on his face as he watched his best friend fall further in love.
Calum loved family band night, he loved being able to spend time with his brothers and their partners, and he especially loved the part where he got to show Dovey new recipes to cook together. They'd been making a new Italian recipe, the smell of fresh tomatoes and herbs filling the kitchen as they both worked in silence, the only sound around them was of the knife against the chopping board and the music playing from the speaker on the counter. Calum had been lost in cutting up some basil that he almost missed the soft gasp that left Dovey when she heard the familiar guitar notes playing from the speaker. Calum recognized the song almost immediately, knowing that it was one of Dovey's favorites because as she had told Calum multiple times during their car rides or when cooking, "the Jonas Brother's were the best band ever and no one, not even The Beatles could compare. Well except maybe your band, Cal, but even then, Lovebug is a banger." Calum never argued with her on that because he knew how special the band was to her and she wasn't wrong, Lovebug was an absolute banger.
Calum had set the knife down on the counter and made his way over to Dovey, his arms wrapping around her waist as he sang quietly along to the song. He couldn't help but smile as he saw the way Dovey's eyes lit up and her arms wrapped around his shoulders, to pull him in closer. They were both singing to one another, swaying along to the guitar as the world seem to just blur until it was just the two of them swaying and taking each other in.
It wasn't long until the song started to speed up and Dovey pulled away from him, a fond look still in her eyes as she squeezed both of his hands in hers. Calum had been admiring her ever since he pulled her into his arms, wishing things could always be this way and the pressure of touring or promoting would go away. He hadn't told anyone yet, besides Mali who had gone with him to what seemed like every jewelry store in Los Angeles, but there was a box with a ring in it hidden in his office. He'd bought it a month before, his heart racing every time he thought about getting down on one knee to ask Dovey to spend the rest of their lives together, to become one. He'd been trying to plan the perfect time to ask her, to make it a day she wouldn't forget but it just seemed like life kept getting in the way and Calum kept getting whisked off to a different city for a performance. He'd been planning on taking her next time he was pushed onto an airplane and just ask her in the most romantic spot he could find but-
"Now I'm! YEEEEAAAAHOW!"
Calum's thoughts were once again interrupted by Dovey, who had seemed to take her performance of the song from dancing with Calum to a full on air guitar performance while she bounced around him. Calum's laugh echoed through the kitchen as he watched the love of his life rock out to a Jonas Brothers’ song while they were meant to be making dinner. He couldn't help but join in on the fun, whipping his head back and forth as he joined Dovey in playing out the guitar riff as he sang along, knowing that Dovey was the one for him and that he was going to be marrying her one day.
Ashton, who had been staring at the couple and recording them, stifled his laughter and shook his head as he watched them both dance along to the song. He slipped out of the hallway, making his way back to the side yard as the two lovebirds were left panting and in a fit of giggles from their performance. After looking back at the video, he opened up his messages with Calum and was about to hit send when Calum walked out of the house and called his name, the message long forgotten as he saw Calum struggling to juggle a bag of recycling and a very excited Duke on a leash.
Ashton had gotten a call a few weeks later, Calum speaking way too fast for him to understand and sounding like he had just run a marathon. After telling him to calm down and take a deep breath, Ashton couldn't help but chuckle as he heard the good news about an engagement and Calum asking him to be his best man. Without hesitation, Ashton agreed and congratulated the couple as he switched the call to Facetime, grinning as he saw the Doves with flushed cheeks and teary eyes. With promises of a celebration of their engagement and another round of congratulations, Ashton hung up the phone before Dovey could start crying again and started planning a time where everyone could get together.
It had started off as a group chat, late one night when Ashton's worries about not getting a present for the Doves' engagement party had him scrolling through homeware websites until all he could think about was Dutch ovens and air fryers. He'd sent out a message to everyone he could think of that had had the honor of spending time with the two weirdos known as the Doves, it was a simple request really, one he knew he'd get plenty of replies from.
"Can you guys send me any videos you have from the Doves?"
It wasn't long before he and Andy were looking through all the videos Ashton had received and sorted through the best clips. After a few hours filled with both of them laughing at how perfect Calum and Dovey were for one another, Ashton's present was complete and ready for the Doves to see.
Calum had been obsessed with holding Dovey's hand ever since she had started wearing her engagement ring, running his hand over the thing gold band every time he had the chance to. Whenever they were out running errands or hanging out with their friends, his hand would be tightly grasped in hers, his eyes looking down at the ring every once in a while to admire it. Even as Calum drove them to the address that Ashton had texted them at the beginning of the week, with promises of free booze and a celebration of their big news, Calum couldn't help but glance at the ring that was adorning Dovey's hand.
The party had been filled with lots of congrats from the Doves' friends and family who had all found themselves in a courtyard hidden in the middle of the wine country where flowers decorate the walls and love flowed throughout. It was filled with delicious food and a lot of champagne, not that anyone was complaining too much. But it wasn't until Dovey and Calum found themselves in the middle of everyone facing a projector screen that Ashton had been setting up for the past few minutes with Andy that everyone had settled in their seats and waited with anticipation. Calum looked around the crowd, confusion clear in his eyes as he tried to figure out why everyone was watching them both him and Dovey.
"So as we all know, we're here to celebrate the fact that these two lovebirds have finally decided to tie the knot!" Ashton grinned as he clapped his hands and chuckled when everyone followed him. "And to celebrate that, our good friend Andy and I have decided to make a video, with the help of many of you here today, to show exactly why these two lovebirds were meant to meet."
Calum's head cocked to the side as he listened to his best man speak, his eyebrow raising as the projector screen switched from plain white into a picture of him and Dovey with a kangaroo when they had visited Calum's family back home and taken a trip to the zoo. As the picture faded, Calum heard Dovey's laugh playing out from the speaker near the projector, a video of her and Calum from one of the many game nights they'd attended playing out.
As the rest of the video played out, Calum's laugh joined Dovey as the scene switched and a video of both of them at the latest album release dancing along to Wildflower. Different moments in time showed the way Calum and Dovey's relationship seemed to be something more than either of them realized, something more than just two people who loved each other. It was moments where Dovey was laughing over Calum spotted her from the stage and they both waved at one another, moments where they were both asleep on a couch while their friends argued over the rules of a game, moments where they seemed too lost in one another to even notice anyone recording them.
Calum glanced over to Dovey, who had been watching the video while squeezing his hand every time she laughed, she had a soft look on her face, one she rarely ever showed to anyone except for Calum when sleep was so tempting but she wanted to stay up and talk the night away. Her eyes were focused on the video that was playing in front of them, too lost in reliving those moments where she thought that no one had been watching nevertheless recording. It wasn't until Calum heard the familiar notes to a song that Dovey loved that he saw the tears forming in her eyes. His own eyes moved back to the screen, watching that moment from weeks ago in their kitchen where they had danced along to a Jonas Brothers' song and had gotten lost in each other, never realizing that Ashton had been recording them.
It was the moment when Calum had realized that he had needed to ask her to marry him as soon as he could, it was the day where after everyone had left Calum had booked them a trip away where the two of them could take each other in and where no one could stop him from asking her what had been on his mind for a while now. It was all in front of him and Calum felt the breath sucked out of him as he once again was hit with the realization that Dovey, who would have dance parties with him in the kitchen and then proceed to fight with him over the fact that celery was not a delicious treat, was his soulmate and there was no way he was ever going to let go of her, the ring on her finger shining almost as bright as their smiles as the video ended with the one and only, Lovebug.

Could I pretty please request Zen and MC ~platonically~ getting hammered together and just getting into shenanigans? I’m a ✨lesbian✨ and still reslly would love to have these characters as best friends, especially zen because he seems like such a ride or die. If I could have one wish it would be getting plastered with Zen and him making sure I don’t die. Thank you in advance and feel free to reject this one lol
Yes !!! Ofc I can do that :) also I have literally never rejected a request LMAO I’m here for your enjoyment. I’m rlly excited to write this bc everyone is SLEEPING on zen and also ?? The Zen friendship content in Jumin’s route? I’ll never shut up about how much I love it. Also I threw Yoosung in here too pls don’t hate me
Clubbing - Platonic! Zen
Warnings: alcohol (duh lmao)
Summary: you’ve had a rough day at work. Zen’s been meaning to show you around to some of his favorite bars. Zen’s responsible but also wouldn’t hesitate to punch a bitch if need be. Yoosung has to clean up after your messes
Oh! Also. PSA, I’m 19. So have I ever gone out and gotten drunk... no LMAO. I do drink (it’s legal where I’m at as long as you’re with your parents, still wouldn’t be able to drink in a bar though) but only enough to get buzzed usually. Anyway if this is inaccurate that’s why I am so sorry LMAO
You honestly had had the worst day today. It was a pretty bad week, truth be told, and you were so grateful it was the weekend. You texted Zen a lot throughout this week; the two of you had become close friends since the RFA party and hung out almost every weekend. Hearing all about your bad days, he suggested taking you to a bar to let off some steam and give you something to look forward to. You’d never turn down a drink.
You took an Uber to the bar, as did Zen. You expressed your desire to get plastered and Zen agreed wholeheartedly. You had never been to this bar before, but Zen swore by it, so you trusted him.
“Hey!” Zen exclaimed as he saw you get out of the car. He was leaning against the wall of the bar coolly, dressed in the leather jacket he must have pulled out of his closet from the time he was in a motorcycle gang.
“This better be worth the commute,” you teased, not letting him live down the fact that it took almost an hour to get here (primarily due to traffic honestly).
“Oh it will,” he had a giant grin on his face. “I’ve been so busy I haven’t been here in a while, but i doubt it’s changed.” He pushed himself off the wall and made his way inside alongside you. “It’s right outside of a college so you get all the fun college students here.”
“Sounds messy,” you commented, glancing at some girls in skimpy crop tops and high-waisted shorts getting drunk already.
“Much better than bars for real adults. You’ve always got some guy moping over a glass of whiskey in those. Here, it’s all singing and dancing and getting drunk. Of course, I only come when I want to get completely hammered, but it’s always fun. The kids are nice too.”
It was at this point that you reminded yourself that Zen was only 23. He seemed so much older because he’s been on his own for so long, but nope, he was 23. The same age as a lot of the grad students here. So partying with them was not weird or creepy in any sort of way. In fact, the students probably were over the moon to party with someone so famous and, if they weren’t aware of who he was, handsome.
“So what do you typically start with here?” You asked, wanting to get the full experience.
“Shots. Classic move, especially for the med school students. You’ll see them soon enough. They start off with fireball but then make their way down to the cheapest vodka they have as they get more drunk and can’t actually taste it.”
“Let’s follow their influence,” you suggested. Zen went up to the bar and ordered some shots, bringing four glasses back with him. “Do they normally do two at once?” You asked.
“Nah, they’re way too broke for that. But I thought it’d be fun.” He handed you your shot glass and clinked his against it. You gulped down the shot, feeling the familiar fire burn in your throat. (I love fireball LMAO) You shook your head vigorously to counteract the burn, as though that would help, then looked back at Zen. “Good?” He asked.
“Perfect. Round 2?”
“Already?”
You laughed. “Well, it’s here isn’t it? The faster we can get drunk the better.”
You got drunk pretty fast. Zen was constantly handing you drinks, which of course you didn’t turn down. Maybe it was because the two of you hadn’t gotten drunk in a while, but this one hit you hard.
“Will you sing karaoke with me?” Zen chuckled, his cheeks flushed from all the alcohol in his system.
You laughed out loud. “Sure. I’ll even let you pick the song.”
You did not expect him to pick “Before He Cheats” but honestly? A banger of a song. Who doesn’t know all the words to this song?? “Hey, I’m Zen, and this is my best friend,” he slurred out, introducing you before the song started.
You sang in unison, the first instrumental break coming out. “This is for my asshole ex!” You cheered. The college students cheered with you.
“And all my old managers who told me I’d never make it!” Zen added. Everyone cheered again. You walked over to him, tripping on the microphone cord. He caught you a few inches off the ground.
“That would’ve hurt like a bitch,” you commented, bursting into laughter again. He helped you up and held your hand as you crossed over the wires this time, ensuring you wouldn’t get caught again.
Was your performance good? Probably not. Even Zen, who usually sang pretty well, was some sort of hot mess since he was so drunk. But the drunk students seemed to enjoy it, so you padded off the ‘stage’, proud of yourself.
Some dude called your name. Ew. Maybe Zen shouldn’t have introduced you.
Zen whipped around to face him. “If you so much as look at her right now I swear to God I’ll knock you into- Yoosung?”
“Hi!” You turned around to see the origin of the voice; it was indeed Yoosung. “You guys are kinda drunk.”
The two of you simply laughed, brushing him off. “What are you doing here?” Zen asked.
“Oh, well I live right down the street.”
“Oh my goodness you are a college student!” You observed keenly. You were connecting so many dots.
“Yup. Uh, I had an LOLOL event tonight but was super tired, so I thought I’d come and take a shot and it’d help wake me up. Never expected to see you two belting out Carrie Underwood.” He scratched the back of his neck awkwardly.
“Oh! I have a great idea,” Zen exclaimed, focusing his attention on you.
“I’d love to hear it.”
“Why don’t we just crash at Yoosung’s place tonight? We won’t have to pay for an Uber at high time and get stuck in traffic!”
Yoosung’s eyes widened. “But-“
“That’s pretty smart,” you agreed, nodding. “What do you think Yoosung?”
“I-“ he sighed. “I guess it’s okay. As long as I can play LOLOL.”
“Yay!” You cheered. “We can go now. Lead the way.”
Yoosung hesitantly led you out to the street, walking ahead of the two of you, glancing back every few seconds to ensure you hadn’t died. Zen wrapped an arm around you and you one around him, and you stumbled down the street together, only slightly more stable than you would have been if it were just you on your own.
Luckily Yoosung lived on the first floor. You weren’t sure you’d be able to do steps right now. He unlocked the door to his apartment. “I only have like... a bed and a couch,” he muttered awkwardly. “But we can figure something out.”
You stepped into his apartment, looking around. “Wow Yoosung! This is cute as hell.”
“Uh, thanks, I think.”
You made your way to his couch and collapsed down on it. Zen did so on the other end of the couch at the same time, your legs bumping into each other. You both shifted so that your legs were on top of his so that it was more comfortable.
“Is that really comfortable? You can take my bed,” Yoosung offered.
“Nah, this is great. Will you get us a blankie though?” You asked. Yoosung left to go find something. Zen shrugged off his leather jacket. You were very happy you wore something comfy enough to crash in.
Yoosung draped a blanket over the two of you, his face bright red. “Is this okay?”
“Perfect! Thanks Dad,” Zen joked. Yoosung’s face got even more red, his ears heating up now too.
“Night Yoosungie. Don’t stay up all night,” you commented, shutting your eyes.
You heard something set down on the coffee table. Cups of water and Advil. He was too sweet. “I have class in the morning, so feel free to see yourself out whenever you’re up and ready tomorrow,” Yoosung said. “Goodnight you two.” He chuckled to himself. You and Zen probably looked like absolute idiots, but not that you cared. You had a great night out. Good thing Dad Yoosung was there too.

Winter Weddings – 15 Reasons We Love Them added to Google Docs
Winter Weddings – 15 Reasons We Love Them
We have been inundated with requests to big up the winter weddings vibes. With Coronavirus meaning many spring postponements, a lot of you now find yourselves setting a new date for the winter months and are keen to know the benefits of having a winter wedding.
We have a post coming soon about how to transform your spring wedding into a winter wedding, but today I wanted to chat about winter weddings in their own right. I’ve enlisted the help of reader Holly who had her very own winter wedding. So without further ado, let’s crack on with the benefits of having a winter wedding.
Advantages Of Having A Winter Wedding
It’s different
Simply by the fact that there are fewer winter weddings, yours is likely to stand out. Even in today’s climate where couples are postponing weddings from spring to winter, there are still those that are postponing for 12 months, so winter is still likely to be an unsaturated season.
It’s also at the time of year, under ‘normal’ circumstances, that your guests are less likely to have wedding fatigue (can you believe that is actually a thing?) and your wedding is less likely to clash with others or annual holidays.
More Supplier Availability
January to March are often quieter months for venues and suppliers which means potentially more availability. A winter wedding might just be your ticket to getting that sought after supplier that you really really want. These months can also potentially be more economical in terms of wedding dresses, if you get savvy. There are often more sample dresses available from previous seasons and if you did want a last minute dress – you may not have to wait the obligatory 6 months or so.
Winter Wedding Weather
It goes without saying that you likely won’t need a wet weather contingency… Just lead with that in mind from the get-go. One less thing for you to have to think about right. You might want to consider snow/ice contingencies… Especially if you’re venue is somewhat rural. But aside from that, plan with the good old British weather in mind and embrace it.
A big misconception about winter weddings is that you can’t have a marquee or a tipi wedding in the colder months. We’re here to tell you that you absolutely can. From fire pits to the most magical lighting, you can have an insanely gorgeous and cosy warm winter wedding in a tent. Don’t believe us? Then check out this previous post on how to have a winter wedding in a marquee.
Decorations
For late November or December weddings, often your venue will have some Christmas decorations up already, so this can sometimes enhance your own theme. They may already have a festive tree or some beautiful garlands floating about. It’s a good idea to ask them what their seasonal decor plans are and you could take inspiration from this for your own.
Top Tip from Holly: I showed my floristry plans to my venue and they asked my florist to do their Christmas decorations as a result – this meant as an added bonus it all tied in!
Winter Wedding Ideas
All Of The Lights
With the evenings getting darker sooner you can really benefit from tonnes of atmospheric fairy lights, tapered candles, lanterns… Whatever takes your fancy. You can transform a venue space with just these three things alone. You can set such a special atmosphere with the right lighting so make sure you really consider your options. This post might help give you some direction.
Top Tip from Holly: Don’t forget how much light fairy lights chuck out! The canopy at my wedding breakfast was much brighter than I envisioned because of the volume of lights. And for anything overhanging, use battery-powered tea lights to avoid wax dripping onto guests.
Festive Themes
Winter is arguably the easiest season of them all to draw inspiration from and create a theme. Some ideas are:
Floristry: Using seasonal flowers and foliage to bring that festive feel.
Top tip from Holly: I used mistletoe and holly in our buttonholes. Check out our podcast episode about wedding flowers here to find out why you should void using mistletoe on your cake!
Some flowers may be more expensive at this time of year if they’re not in season so it’s worth really considering what you go for and what will fit into your budget. But don’t worry, seasonal winter flowers can be just as striking and colourful as any other time of year. Here is a round-up of some great autumn-winter flowers to fire up your imagination. Think berries, feathers, ranunculus, cosmos…
Ceremony: Struggling to decide on readings or music for your ceremony? You can look at incorporating carols or Christmas inspired readings for pre-Christmas weddings. Our reader Holly had Deck The Halls during her ceremony. Obvs.
Or embrace the concept of Hygge (cosiness) with songs or readings that evoke that feeling for you.
Food & Drink: Again it’s really easy to draw from the season when it comes to food and bevs. How about warm drinks for your ceremony (mulled wine/cider/hot chocolate etc), and you can follow that through into your reception and breakfast with classic Christmas tipples (speak with your venue about creating cocktails as they can get a bit pricey if they include multiple ingredients).
And what’s not to love about winter food? That real comfort food that everyone enjoys. You know the ones, bangers and mash (great for meat-eaters and veggies too!), cottage pie or how about a selection of miniature pies? Devils on horseback (guys, I didn’t know that this was an alternative name for pigs in blankets! Did you?), all the roast veg, gingerbread men, mince pies, and you can most definitely crack out the Baileys for an Irish coffee.
Holly’s top tipple tips are: Hibiscus flowers in Prosecco, Sloe Gin, Mulled Spiced Cider. How about Mimosas with candy canes, Mistletoe Mules, or cranberry whiskey sours? I don’t think you can go wrong with a classic espresso martini either. And then there’s hot chocolates and toasted marshmallows in the evening.
Favours: If you want to go down the traditional route of favours then again, this is a great season for finding things that your guests will love. How about taking a stab at homemade cranberry sauce or hot chocolate bundles. Maybe you could go for tree decorations, candy canes, candles or crackers. Holly made her very own sloe gin. Fancy.
Cake: If you’re partial to a bit of festive christmas cake then why not make that the basis of your wedding cake? Other things to consider are yule logs (my absolute fave) and those richer warmer cakes, the red velvets or a chocolate fudge maybe.
Winter Wedding Fashion
Your options are endless when it comes to winter wedding fashion. And winter bridal accessories are our favourites. Some excellent ways to cosy up your look are:
Footwear: Babes, if you rock a boot we will love you forever. If you’re after some inspiration as to how that translates, look no further than real bride Emily. Wow.
Cover Ups: Interestingly what you decide to put over your wedding outfit can sometimes make the outfit. Check out this Pinterest board dedicated to bridal cover ups for tonnes of inspiration for the ultimate accessory.
And one of our most loved Instagram pictures was of this unbelievably bridal coat. We’re seriously hoping that bridal coats become a thing, because… Wow.
Accessories: You can also consider going a bit… Spangly on the ears and neck and/or wrists. Maybe not all at once. And what about what you’re wearing on your head? If ever there was a time for Ice-Queen-Tiara-Chic it’s at your winter wedding.
Consider your fabrics: We’re talking predominantly about velvet. If there’s one time you can rock and all out velvet suit or a velvet cover-up, it’s for a winter wedding. It adds warmth and character to any wedding. Also wedding dress layers are your friend. But don’t get too worried about your dress being warm for winter, you’ll mostly be nice and cosy inside so you can still rock that backless dress if you wish.
Make-up: A darker lip, vampy nails, a smokey eye. All things that work so well during this season should you feel bold enough to take any of them on.
And one final note when it comes to nailing your winter wedding: Consider how your photography plans might need to change to accommodate the season. With the evenings being shorter you may need to take your couples shots slightly earlier. And if you want to capture those golden winter sunsets you might have to be willing to nip out from your wedding breakfast so that you don’t miss it. Make sure you have a good chat with your photographer to ensure you get all the shots that are important to you.
We’d love to hear about when your winter weddings are going to be and what your plans are. Be sure to check out our winter wedding Pinterest board for inspiration on all the above advice.
And thanks to Holly for contributing to this article. Holly joined is on the podcast to chat about planning a wedding with small children so that’s definitely worth a listen if it’s relevant to you too.
Happy winter wedding planning lovelies x
