The most frustrating thing about being an artist is getting a very specific and highly detailed art idea that is so clear and vivid in your minds eye and then being forced to work your 9-6 and pray that the concept stays fresh and clear in your mind by the time you get home

Personality Headcanons
(Since the greek male love interests have little to none to go off of)
HYACINTHUS: I think people believe that he acts like very sweet and gentle, but I think that doesn't make a lot of sense for Hyacinthus and it's kind of a easy basic answer. Hyacinthus, to me, seems like more of a military type person. I mean, he's in SPARTA, and everybody knows how Sparta acts like. I'm not saying he can't be a nice person, but I think there is far more to him. He's not necessarily delicate in my opinion, he's very strong and very competitive. He can be protective, even over Apollo, and a amazing fighter. I think that he liked Apollo so much because he didn't have to worry about anything around him. He can be stressfree, and he loved that. I think he was also a direct person with the way he spoke. Essentially the way Patroclus acted like in the Iliad, because I believe they kind of parallel one another, like Achilles parallels Apollo in some ways.
NERITES: Nerites is a fun one, actually. It took a while for me to make up a personality because of what little we have of him. We know Aphrodite and Poseidon both love him, we know that he's Amphitrite's little brother, and we know he's extraordinarily beautiful. Also that he's Poseidon's charioteer. I also heard that he was VERY VERY fast to the point he even challenged Helios (or maybe he didn't and Helios was just jealous tbh). So I'm thinking that maybe he's a daredevil of sorts? Very energetic and very playful kind of like the typical little brother. He's a ride-or-die type of person and doesn't like staying in one place. Also, maybe he can be a little bit bratty at times, giving Poseidon a little bit of sass certain times (Poseidon is way more unbothered then people would typically think). Also I think Nerites is very much aware of HOW pretty he is and uses his pretty privelege to get away with pranks and stuff. I mean how is Poseidon supposed to punish him with those pretty doe eyes? Come on!
Ganymede: He's actually the more simpler ones. He's the only one that I can genuinely see as gentle and delicate. I think he was probably pampered a lot due to his immense beauty, so kind of the opposite of Hyacinthus. When he first came to Olympus I think he was genuinely frightened and Zeus had to comfort him. (Cute little headcanon that he met Nerites and felt a bit more comfortable due to Nerites' company). Even though we all know what PROBABLY happened based on Zeus' behavior, I like to think that Zeus was very patient with Ganymede and refused to touch him until Ganymede initiated first. I think Ganymede also kind of doesn't realize how much privilege he has? He's a bit spoiled but doesn't quite realize it? He knows he's pretty but he doesn't exactly understand HOW pretty he is, and he also doesn't understand how far Zeus would go for him. He's not necessarily insecure, just completely unaware and not too out of touch.
Adonis: Adonis is literally the insane dude who you speak to who constantly talks about and is fascinated by DEATH or the UNIVERSE or how the world is going to collapse any second. If Adonis spoke to the average joe, they would probably only listen because of how beautiful Adonis is. Adonis realizes he's very beautiful, but it's extremely effortless. I think Aphrodite kind of likes that he doesn't try so hard, and it just comes for him. Adonis doesn't like special treatment for his looks either (but he definitely gets it anyway). Adonis is incredibly fearless when it comes to death, and gets excited when he almost dies. Adonis has a great singing voice but will ONLY sing around people he feels deserve it. Not even out of arrogance, but because he only wants people he loves and trusts to hear it.

a little wip! it's about time I introduced an oc here other than Aleyxi, so meet Callisto! (and Europa and Ganymede, by extension)
Callisto is what you get when you try to make a werewolf out of someone who is already decidedly canine and anthropomorphic - a wereberus! were-cerebus. Three times as much wolf in your wolf, right there.
...Maybe a bit more than three times as much on occasion. Three heads does mean three times the appetite, after all. Gotta store extra energy for your next transformation, y'know! Go ahead and eat up, you ever know just how much you'll need.
I'm still working out her actual markings/palette, but this gets the main idea across. Europa is the extra head looking at the pie, and Ganymede is the head with both ears folded. Callisto's overall design is going to draw on Jupiter's moons, they're so pretty... and she's good at living up to her namesake.
If anyone's noticed the name pattern and is wondering where Io is, I'll throw some stuff under the cut for you.
I'm still trying to decide exactly how I want to include Io. Io stands out from the other Galilean moons anyway, it's super volcanically active instead of being icy like Ganymede, Callisto, and Europa. It's a monster world.
My current thought is either bellymaw or tailmaw - either way, they wouldn't make appearances all too often. Probably only during transformations when there's an absurd amount of magic around, like lunar eclipses or close to special days like Halloween.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think I'm really leaning more towards tailmaw at this point. It would even play into some of the myths that describe Cerberus as having snake heads instead of just dog heads, hah. Still just brainstorming it at this point, though. Thoughts and suggestions are welcome!

Midnight At Noonday | Dead Poets (Part 3)

PART 1 | PART 2
ship: Surprise! x fem!OC
warnings: still none
summary: Clare gets to know Charlie.
word count: 3124
a/n: Tragically, I forgot to cross-post this chapter when I was doing them all before. Hope you guys enjoy.

“So,” Charlie broke the silence as we passed a group of younger boys playing knucklebones in the dirt under one of the oak trees. “You got your extracurriculars yet?”
“Yeah.” I unlinked our arms as we came up to the building’s entrance, casting a glance around for any teachers. “Soccer, rowing, and Nolan said he’d have the caterers teach me some home ec too, even though they don’t do that for boys.” I sighed. “I don’t mind it, really. I like cooking and folding laundry fine, but it kind of seems a little, um…”
“Misogynist?” Charlie offered.
“Yeah!” I nodded enthusiastically. “I was scared to say it.”
“Hey, don’t be.” He gave me an emphatic look. “This whole place is backwards. I’m surprised they let you in at all.”
“Me too, but it was the only way they could get my father to teach. We’re kind of a package deal.”
“I see. Still, it must have been a tough sell. You must have enough merit of your own to convince Nolan to change his ways.”
“I suppose I do.” I flushed under his praise. “I mean, my grades are up to standard and, uh… Well, I suppose I’m a good debater when I have my head screwed on. I had to vouch for myself on the phone to him before he let me in. Y’know there’s something about that man that makes me want to stand up for myself.”
“Would that be his face like a smacked ass, or the whole correctional officer bit?”
“Both, probably.” I said with a giggle. “I managed to convince him to let me into the debate club too.”
“Debate club?” Charlie raised his eyebrows. “Impressive. How’d you swing that?”
“Well, I debated him. I told him I imagine a number of the boys in the club would go on to careers in politics, so if any of them wanted to run for president or something, it would be very important to understand the female perspective in order to win women’s votes.”
“No time like the present, right?”
“Exactly.” I nodded. “I said that the earlier you start gathering information, the easier it will be to campaign later. And then I made a joke about helping them to better understand their future wives, and that really tickled him.”
“Did he give you any push back?”
“Of course. He said I’d have an unfair advantage ‘cause my femininity would fluster my opponents; and also that my admittance to the club would ‘undermine the long cultivated identity that has been a constant since the club’s inception.’” I slipped into a half-hearted impression of the stuffy old man. “So I said if I ever argued against the club’s values, surely the members coming together to defend them would only strengthen their resolve; and that I would wear my ugliest, lumpiest jumper when I’m on the soap box.”
“I bet he saw the funny side of that.” He said sardonically.
“He did! He actually laughed, can you believe it? He said I have ‘moxie.’”
“Weird.” He frowned, but there was real admiration in the look he shot me.
“You’re telling me.” I laughed to cover my blush. “The funny thing is, I don’t really care about debating. I really wanted a spot on the school paper, but he said it would be inappropriate for a new transfer student to be involved in something so front-facing; especially one who’s already drummed up some controversy.”
“Damn. Try him again next semester, huh? I’m on the paper, I can vouch for you.”
“That’s so kind! Thank you, Charlie.”
“Any time.” He said as we rounded the corner to the east wing stairwell. “Hey, did you say you’re doing rowing?”
“And soccer.”
“Bit of a sportswoman, huh? Very nice.”
“You don’t have to butter me up, I’ll still help you with English.” I threw him a smirk.
“Ugh!” He threw his hand up in phoney indignation. “I’d never use flattery to get what I want! But, seriously, I think it’s cool you’re athletic. You can sit by me at rowing, if you want.”
“Sure. I’ve never done it before, so I hope I’m not too much of a hindrance.”
“You’ll pick it up fast. It’s easy once your muscles get used to it. You better pray you’re on my soccer team, though, kid. I’m the best goalie that ever lived.”
“Sure you are.” I rolled my eyes playfully. “I’ve never played that either. I hope I learn quickly.”
“It’s not so bad. What did you do for sports at Chelsea?”
“I did tennis and track. We had soccer and cricket teams too, but that was never my thing. You ever played tennis?”
“No, never.”
“That’s a shame! It’s so much fun.” I sighed dolefully. “I still have my gear, and I’m hoping to find a partner.”
“I could try.” He offered. “I don’t know how good I’ll be.”
“That’s sweet of you.” I gave his arm a light squeeze. “If I find somewhere to play, I’ll let you know.”
“Sure. Look, we’re nearly there.”
“Oh, so we are.”
Sure enough, we had arrived at the familiar stairway that led right up to my room. I was astonished that not only had he kept me entertained all the way from the west wing to here, but he had kept me talking through our entire walk. After the horror of this morning, I thought I would be buried deep in my shell forever. I felt a warm rush of gratitude for the boy with the permanent smirk. Though he liked to mask it with a clownish attitude, I could see that he really cared about people.
“I can take it from here, thanks Charlie.”
“No problem. Hey, do you have your own bathroom, or are you slumming it with us?”
“No, I have my own.” I laughed. “Well, it’s Dad’s- I mean Mr Keating’s too.”
“Ugh! Privileged.”
“I know!” I blushed, embarrassed at the faculty’s special treatment. “I’ll see you at dinner?”
“Sure.”
“Hey, can…” I hesitated. “Can I sit with you guys?”
“Of course!” He touched my arm reassuringly. “I’ll save you a seat.”
“Thanks. See you then.”
“Bye, Skipper!” He was gone before I could reprimand him.
Feeling a spark of annoyance- more so at my father than Charlie- I scaled the last flight of stairs and came up to my bedroom. It was a surprising relief to be alone, and I realised my ears were ringing from the constant noise of three hundred teenage boys nattering and play-fighting from class to class. I rubbed my temples, feeling around for tension, heaved a sigh, and dragged my feet over to my suitcases. It felt like such an effort to dig around and find my toiletries, and by the time I found them I had to fight against the urge to curl up on the floor and go to sleep. Instead, I hauled myself to my feet and had a quick look around my room. It was much better than the boys’ dorms; there was more space, with a bigger bed and wardrobe, a bigger desk with more drawer space, and a small table with one of those new fangled electric tea kettles. I felt like the Queen of Sheba, though I doubted she would be so ashamed of her luxuries. I let out a sigh, then made my way to the bathroom to scrub off the day with soaps and potions.
I had just finished putting my hair up in Spoolies and was about to put on some dinner clothes when I heard a rapping at my door. I hurriedly pulled a bathrobe over my pajamas and went over to investigate. To my dismay, there was no peephole, so I had no clue as to who I was opening the door to. In a slight panic, and not wanting to sound rude, I opened the door straight up without asking who was there. Thank the lord it was just Dad. He was smiling softly and held a bundle of cattails in a tall crystal vase.
“Hi, sweetheart.” He stepped in and kissed my cheek. “I thought you could do with some colour in here, but for the life of me, I couldn’t find any foxgloves. I nearly had an impromptu scuba session getting these.”
“Thank you.” He strode past me and placed them on the windowsill by my desk. “I love cattails.”
“Yes, you do.” He agreed with a playful smile. “You bit one when you were two and got a mouthful of seeds.”
“So I’ve heard.” It was one of his favourite stories from my early childhood.
“So. Clare. I thought you might like to join me for dinner in my room tonight for a little recconassance. How about it?”
I hesitated. I would be so grateful to have some quiet time before study group tonight, but Charlie had already saved me a spot at his table and I desperately wanted to see Neil again. I supposed I would see him while we studied, but there would be little time for talking. I suppose I left it too long to reply, as Dad shook his head and laughed.
“You don’t have to say yes.”
“No, no I’d like to. I just-” I sighed in agitation. “I don’t like that I have privileges that the boys don’t have.”
“Hm.” He looked thoughtful. “Well… Sure, you have a few luxuries not afforded to the rest of the student body, but you have plenty of extra restrictions too. I think it all evens out in the end.”
“I suppose you’re right.” I let out the tension in my shoulders. “I’ll eat with you, but I need to go a little before eight so I can meet up with my study group.”
“Of course.” He nodded. “I’m proud to see you taking your school work seriously, but try not to let it rule your world.”
“I think I might have to if I’m going to stay here.” I wiped my eyelids, fatigue weighing heavy on them. “I have to at least stay on top of things, until I get a feel for how much I have to do.”
“Mm, you are right.” Dad sighed, shaking his head. “I only wish you had more time to do what you’re truly passionate about.”
“Who knows? Maybe I have an untapped passion for Latin.”
“Well, you can’t have inherited it from me.” He ambled to the door. “Come on, dinner’s getting cold.”
It seemed Dad had hustled an extra portion of the teacher’s meal for me. Waiting at the small dining table in his room was a tray with a glass cloche over it, covering two steaming bowls of carbonara. With a pang of guilt, I noted that it was much nicer than the prison food I had heard some of the boys describing earlier that day. I sat down while Dad stepped aside to select a record to put on the turntable.
“Looks good, doesn’t it?” He smiled. “I can’t guarantee all your meals will be as nice as this one. Hell-ton hash is a necessary rite of passage.”
“Surely it’s not that bad.” I tried my best to sound optimistic, but the day was so long and I was so tired, and with a stack of work to do for every class, I truly felt like the entire school had been designed to torture me. Why would the food be any different?
“You don’t sound convinced.”
“I’m not.” I let my hand rest on my cheek and gazed longingly at the meal, only just realising how starved I was.
“Go on, dig in.” Dad insisted, picking out a Chopin piano record, probably for my benefit.
I started eating before he sat down, and neither of us said grace. Of the four pillars, tradition was the one that fell most by the wayside in our household. The pasta was the most divine thing I had ever tasted, and it took a lot of effort not to wolf it all down straight away. The piano filled the air with delicate swelling sounds. Chopin would always be my favourite.
“So, how was your day?” I asked before he had a chance to start a round of twenty questions.
“Excellent.” He responded, pouring us both a glass of cloudy apple juice. “Every one of my classes contain students of great merit. I can see poets everywhere! But I see real brilliance brewing in your class. There’s a spark there that I can’t quite place.”
Neil. I thought. From the brief interaction I had had with him, I saw his friends treat him with reverence; even Charlie- the social dynamo that he was- seemed to look at him with respect. Neil’s very presence must have stirred up inspiration in his peers.
“I agree.” I smiled. “I think even the quiet ones will surprise you.”
“Yes, indeed. Though, I quite like that Dalton boy, loud-mouthed as he may be. He reminds me so much of myself at that age. Eager to entertain.”
“Charlie’s lovely.” I swirled some pasta around my fork, reminiscing our earlier conversation. “A boy was giving me a little trouble earlier today, and he saved me.”
“What kind of trouble?” Dad paused, fork raised, his face suddenly grave.
“Nothing serious.” I said quickly. “He wanted me to join his study group, and said something insulting about one of the boys in my group when he found out I already had one.
“Oh. How unpleasant.” He relaxed and took his bite of pasta.
“Mhm. I stood up for him, though.”
“You always were one to do that.” He smiled proudly.
“I suppose I am. I had a disagreement with Overstreet before class when he threw a paper ball at that boy who sneezes a lot.”
“Spencer Poindexter.”
“Poindexter?!”
“Yes, you heard right. You won’t forget that one in a hurry, will you?”
“No. Poor guy.” I shook my head, feeling a rush of empathy for the kid. He must have had a terrible time growing up. “That reminds me, though-” I pinched the bridge of my nose in embarrassment. “I forgot Todd Anderson’s name earlier. Called him ‘Tom.’ It was terrible, he went bright red… looked like he was malfunctioning. He’d only just been introduced too! Oh, gosh, it was so bad!”
“That’s not that bad.” Dad chuckled. “You’ll worry yourself to death if you let yourself get hung up on a little thing like that.”
“I suppose it could have happened to anyone…” I mumbled, face hot with remembered embarrassment.
“Exactly. Anderson seems like a forgiving kind, anyway. You’ll make amends in time.”
“Yes, I hope so.” It would be so awkward to spend time with Neil if his roommate hates me.
We ate in silence for a while. I soaked up the piano melodies like gravy into bread, letting them draw my mind away to ballroom scenes of slow dancing with Neil at a senior prom we’d never have. I was just scraping up the last bits of bacon and was about to dig into my creme brulee when Dad spoke up again.
“So, about this crush we were discussing earlier…”
“Oh, stop!” I exclaimed in hushed tones, as if Neil might have had his ear pressed up to the door. “Forget I said anything.”
“Now, Clare, there’s nothing to be embarrassed about.” He soothed.
“There’s everything to be embarrassed about!” I let my fork clatter into my bowl. “I’ve barely said a word to him! I shouldn’t even be feeling like this, anyway. It’s against school rules. Rules that you are supposed to enforce, by the way.”
“I am aware of that. And, as such, if I catch you fooling around, officially I should report you. So it’s of the utmost importance that you don’t give me or any of the staff any reason to suspect a thing.”
“There’s not going to be any fooling around!” I took out my agitation on the crispy top of the creme brulee and shoved a spoonful into my mouth.
“Well, you say that now.” He ran his spoon along the top of his dessert, taking great pleasure in the scraping sound, then struck it once with the back of the spoon, creating a satisfying crack. “Anyway, a clandestine love affair is a good thing at this age. It’ll build character and fuel your poetry. You’ll write the best poems of your life before you’re twenty-five.”
“Mmph!” I buried my face in my hands.
“Who is it?”
“Who is it?” I looked up in horror.
“Yeah.” He rested his cheek on his hand like a gossiping schoolkid. “Tell me.”
I looked at him long and hard, searching his eyes for a glimpse of just what he planned to do with this information. Turning up nothing, I said the only thing I could think of.
“Absolutely not. You’ll have to guess.”
“Guess?”
“Yes, go on. You got three strikes, then you can’t ask me again for a week.”
“Okay, okay.” He thought for a moment. “The obvious guess would be Dalton.”
I hesitated.
“Well, no… Charlie is really wonderful, but, well… it’s not him. It might be simpler if it was him. I mean, at least I’ve had a proper conversation with him, and he makes me laugh, and he seems… Well, maybe the flirting is compulsive.”
“Hm, not Charlie. There goes my one informed guess. Meeks?”
“No. He’s lovely, but no.”
He looked out the window and thought for a moment.
“Anderson?”
I hesitated again, though this time I couldn’t put my finger on why.
“No, not Anderson.”
“Darn. Y’know, if you told me, I might be able to help.”
“Help how?”
“I could reassign seats, pair you two up for assignments… recommend him love poetry.”
“No! No, thank you.” I said hurriedly, getting to my feet. “I think I’ll handle this just fine on my own. Now, I really should go and meet Neil. I’ll see you tomorrow.”
“Neil!” Oh no. “Neil Perry! The one who sits in front of the Pitts boy, with the big brown eyes. I thought of him straight away, but I couldn’t for the life of me remember his name!”
“It’s not him.”
“Oh, yes it is.” He grinned, absolutely cheesed. “I can tell by the panic in your eyes. Not to worry, Clare, my lips are sealed and I will take no action without your go-ahead.”
“It’s not!”
“Okay, sweetheart.” He said unconvincingly, got up and kissed me on the cheek, and handed me the rest of my creme brulee. “Take this to your room, you can eat it later. Though, I’m sure you’ll get enough sugar to last you elsewhere. Now, go have fun.”
“It’s. Not. Him.” I said emphatically before giving him a quick hug. “Good night.”

PJO CHALICE OF THE GODS FULL SPOILERS REVIEW
Non-spoiler review: Very wholesome. Arguably you could pick this up without prior knowledge of the past series and understand it perfectly fine. A good throwback bite sized adventure with our OG trio, literally adventuring on weekends style. Strictly within New York (and the surrounding suburbs but I know nothing of New York geography).
Such a familiar voice to ease back into and feel so at home with. Percy is Percy and will never stop being Percy.
The domestic demigod scenes were so wholesome and heartwarming, further proving Sally and Paul have created the ultimate safe space and Sally is the best mom to mom and why all demigods, gods, and other traumatised individuals just love her upon meeting her.
A LOT of wholesome interactions within the Jackson-Blofis household, between Annabeth, Percy and Grover, Annabeth and Sally, Annabeth and Paul, Paul and Percy, Percy and Grover. The family was family-ing.
Zeus continues to be supremely disgusting. In such an open way which is the closest true acknowledgement to the mythology we will get in a book series largely targeted to a younger demographic. Rick has come such a long way in how he frames his characters, acknowledging the world they live in, touching base with reality quite often in a way that feels like “yeah ofc Percy would see all this and realise this as a traumatised 17 year old living in New York City”.
At times, Percy’s rampant sarcasm throwing around all this commentary felt a touch on the nose and like “Percy Jackson is an eternal 17 year old but the world around has been adjusted to make sense for the current day and age and not the mid-2000s-2010s”. But this feeling didn’t occur very often.
But Percy looking at Ganymede as this traumatised kid who was plucked from his life to serve as Zeus’s eye candy for the rest of his immortal life. Him embracing Gary, the god of Old Age (who was giving me strong Cupid energy in terms of his metaphors and language use and general aggression), because immortality had never tempted him and being an older demigod who can actually look forward to the future is something to celebrate and cherish. Him feeling guilty about exploding on Elisson (when he was literally so overstimulated and experiencing some major sensory overload and the fear and disorientation that comes with that - like he was literally gonna die so go figure he’d let rip his powers in what was like… the most effective and helpful way possible) bc Elisson was clearly stressed out of his mind and two stressed people exploding on each other, with one being an exceptionally terrifyingly powerful demigod and one being a god who wants peace and quiet and for his river to not be polluted, is not in any way productive or healthy.
Dark!Percy stans tho, you ate. That scene was for y’all. Annabeth tho, just vibing acting as a therapist for Elisson.
But I just think the stories Rick has woven have matured in such a wonderful way, as reflected through his beloved main character, Percy. Percy has taken every turn possibly to make sure he doesn’t turn out like Luke, he doesn’t hit that point between jaded and hateful, that he doesn’t ever stop cherishing and valuing his mortality and the people around him. Him being such a rare example of a positive home life, arguably on both his mortal and godly side (see his slightly more stable relationship with Poseidon than most big three or indeed regular demigod children) allows him anchor himself and remind him exactly why he’s doing what he’s doing.
The fact that he can sway the sentiments of minor gods like Geras, or make those “small waves” with people like Barbara, or help out his friend Grover as well as reassure him of their friendship and bond without hesitation, shows time and again why Percy Jackson is such a beloved character and the blueprint of a good boyfriend. Him being so devoted to Annabeth, so delighted for his mom and Paul having a baby, him being upset about not being there in the early stages of Estelle growing up. I was fully expecting there to be a flashforward to her being born but alas not.
BUT SURELY THIS MEANS THERE WILL BE TWO MORE PARTS. WITH TWO MORE RECOMMENDATION LETTERS, RICK I WILL BE WAITING FOR THE ANNOUNCEMENT.

Opinions on Ganymede?
(I personally like the hints of him getting second thoughts but people over look that I feel like or they blow it out of proportion. Also I see where your coming from about characters getting reception arcs and liking irredeemable characters (my MLP favorite was literally chrysalis-))
i could go on about this bratty loser forever, hes my favorite moon if that isn't clear haha :D
although i wasnt a fan of his potential redemption arc at first, it seems as though that isnt the exact direction going on which im happy with. his bitterness about losing the whole thing is exactly what i wanted from him and Europa so im definitely happy now
I also actually quite enjoy him being manipulated by Europa (as in story direction wise, i don't actually think its a good thing), instead of him being exactly like past Earth, its more like hes being manipulated into that mindset Earth had instead of it just being a result of his proudness of being the biggest moon.
Europa is causing him to insecure, Europa is causing his need to be seen as good or better by others because Europa doesnt show him that kind of affection - at least not in a genuine way, its all performative or aggresive
generally though i just love his overall character, i like how he flirts with people on accident , bratty charm lmfao, i love these cringefail type characters
(this isnt to hate on my girl Europa, I love her to)

3rd place — pilots, sisters?, bullying, reminding her of her place, knives and blood are so intimate when you're used to mech combat
///
lightly armed and spindly limbed, your opponent's warsuit is designed for killing speed and little else. headhunters, they're called. assassins purpose-built for taking down other warsuits. tricky opponents, but you know the type. pilots that are impulsive and reckless at best, feral and bloodthirsty at the worst. you happen to know this pilot in particular — your 'sister,' as your squad's handler so often puts it. hellion 3. warsuit: coiled serpent. javelin-class, ganymede-pattern, further customized for speed and cqc. yours, on the other hand, is a more balanced frame bristling with explosives and loaded barrels. your warsuit, winter wolf, may not be as cutting edge as coiled serpent, but the jupiter-pattern II marauders shouldn't be underestimated. you'll show her why.
though it can outpace your gatling gun's hail of fire easily, the barrage corrals coiled serpent right where you want it. you jetison the heavy gatling gun — load lightened, you push your thrusters to their limits in a sudden burst of speed and, clearing a hundred meters in a near instant. grabbinf coiled serpent by its throat, you clamp the enormous fist of your warsuit down on that fragile neck joint. watching a 30-foot steel titan with a price tag in the billions flail desperately for freedom, claw uselessly at your warsuit's armored forearm... it's a sight that never fails to turn you on. the metal groans and buckles in your warsuit's fist. your fist. you bite your lip, your mind filling with the urge to simply bear down with all winter wolf's strength and tear coiled serpent's head off its frame. if only a warsuit could bleed.
"gotcha," you growl over the radio, unable to contain the sadism dripping from your voice.
"fuckfuckfuck okay, i give, i give!"
you can hear the warning sirens in coiled serpent's cockpit, and the panic in hellion 3's voice. fear. you give coiled serpent's neck a parting squeeze before letting go.
"match to hellion 2. nice maneuver, kid." a wave of warmth flows over you at your handler's praise. you can't help but feel even more superior.
"and hellion 3? don't get caught like that again."
you sit there silently, taking pleasure in your sister's admonishing and imagining her squirming with embarrassment in coiled serpent's cockpit. you'll have your chance to gloat later.
the time it takes to get unplugged from your suit only serves to build your urge to a fever-pitch. you practically rip the last slithering nerve splice out of your spine yourself; you'll deal with the migraine later. hellion 3 is exactly where you'd expect to find her — lurking in the rafters above coiled serpent's bay. your bootfalls echo in the wide open space; hard to hide your approach, not that you're trying to. she sits there, legs dangling over the side, looking spent and dejected, smoking a cigarette. you can tell she gave her all.
"the fuck do you want? come to rub it in?"
you sidle up to hellion 3 — your sister — hands in your coat pockets, and grip the concealed knife.
"actually, i think i'll finish the job."
before hellion 3 can react, the sole of your boot connects with her chest, roughly shoving the frail form to the ground, clanging against the metal platform.
"hey, what the fuck do you think you're–"
the appearance of the knife from its hidden place in your pocket cuts her voice off. her eyes are locked on the knife. fear to supplant the brattiness. you lean in, right down to her face, the tip of your knife pressing ever so lightly into her chin, drawing her eyes up to meet yours.
"what's the matter little sister? you talk such a big game in the cockpit. where'd your fight go?"
fear and anger. resentment. fury. she wants nothing more than to take that knife and gut you, but she knows you have her. she has such telling eyes.
"what the fuck are you talking about? that's a knife, you psycho! what do you even want?" you push the knife a little harder. grind your boot into her chest. she winces and the fear in her eyes grows.
"to remind you what your place is. beneath me. you're mine." you pull your boot and the knife away and she gasps for breath; short-lived before your boot comes down again, on her neck this time. "say it."
her hands wrap around your ankle, fighting uselessly against the weight. "i'm yours," she manages to gurgle under your boot.
you let the weight off, boot still against her throat but no longer crushing her airway. "again," you order, letting the knife dangle in her periphery. "
she gasps for air, coughing a little. "i-i'm yours."
"good girl." you drop to your knees, straddling her waist. the knife slips under her tanktop, slowly cutting it away. "we don't need this anymore, do we? keep still or i might cut something important."
she shudders under the knife, watching the knife make its long cut up the length of her shirt. finally cut apart, you brush the halves to the side. she can't help but let out a breathy moan. you've seen hellion 3 naked before of course, that's life in the barracks, but not like this before. she lays there naked, pinned beneath you, shaking and shuddering with abject fear in her eyes — eyes that are locked on yours. you can feel the arousal, the hardness in her pants pressing against you. you could just drink it up. your eyes trace along all the scars left behind by cybernetic implantation, and you find yourself tracing the knifetip along them too. you want to press harder, to cut her open at the old seams, to reach inside and prod that cornered animal, just to see what she'll do. you press the knife against a scar just below her ribs. you really just can't help yourself. the red wells up and she cries out and — fuck, she's just so pretty like this. you toss the knife away, fingers of one hand stroking that wound, other hand grabbing her wrists and pinning them to the floor above your head. face to face again, you lick her blood from your fingertips and — god it tastes good — push them into her mouth. you don't need to say anything for her to start licking and sucking like her life depends on it.
"good girl," you growl. she whimpers around your fingers. "you taste so good, right?" you finger that cut again. she cries out in pain and you wipe the blood across her lips. "i'm gonna eat you alive."
she barely has time to whimper before you dive down to meet her lips. you kiss her messily, smearing blood and spit across her mouth, tongue pushing into her throat. each time you pull back you can't help but bite her lips, bite her neck, bite her shoulders, before greedily kissing her more. a mess of blood on her face, you feel it on yours too. you break the kiss, leaning back up. she's a mess, breathing hard, twitching, eyes staring off in the distance, wet spot on the crotch of her pants.
"hey, you still with me, kid?"
"y-yes big sister," she half-moans. "never kissed anyone before... is all." of course she hadn't. loser.
you push yourself off of her trembling form and stand, wiping the blood from your face, letting her stew in that confession for a moment.
"want more? you know where to find me, pup." you pick your bloodied knife up from where you'd tossed it and walk off, leaving her to lay there a whimpering, bleeding mess. she'll come running as soon as she recovers.

So I read Percy Jackson:Chalice of the Gods and…let me just get this out of the way: IT WAS FANTASTIC!
From the very first line of the book I was transported back in time to middle school where I walked the halls with my face buried in a PJO book. I missed Percy and his point of view so much that I literally started crying the moment his sarcastic inner monologue uttered its first words. This novel was like a fantasy to me with the return of the golden trio and following their wacky hijinks as they try to do quite possibly one of the hardest things in my opinion: Graduate high school and get into college.
This book is instantly a five star in my opinion, but there is an aspect of it that really caught my attention and made me think on a deeper level.
Rick Riordan has never once sugar coated the olympian gods or their ways. He has had to gloss over many details due to the fact that he was writing a middle grade series, but now that Percy and his audience is a little older he is now getting into the fact that the gods are very much morally f’ed up beings. Like I said, he never shied away from this fact with Luke Castellan waging a war against the gods for being so negligent with their children and Percy having to literally ask them to pay their child support as reward for literally saving the damn world.
But that is only the tip of the iceberg of things the olympians have done. Take the storyline of Chalice of the Gods for example: Ganymede, the cupbearer of the gods had his almighty goblet stolen and if he does not get it back before Zues notices he is dead. When you look at Ganymede, the first thing you think is that ‘Oh, he has such an easy job, just pouring drinks and he gets to be immortal on top of that. Who wouldn’t love that?’ And then you look at him closely and see that he literally has trauma and PTSD from when Zues abducted him and forced him to become the gods cupbearer. He spends his time in Zues’s shadow being in constant fear of him and being sneered at or ignored by other gods. No one cares about his opinion of whether he wants to be there or not because they think as long as he gets to be immortal, why wouldn’t he love it.
The main villain of the story, Geras (god of old age), even goes as far to blame Ganymede for becoming immortal as though it was his choice anyway. And lets be real for a second, when the options are either be my immortal servant forever or die, I don’t exactly blame him. Don’t even get me started on Hebe and her childish games. It just sounds like world class victim blaming to me. And Zues was just so slimy to me in the few scenes we saw him in this book. With his inflated sense of ego at a banquet that was supposed to be for his mother and the way he openly leers at Ganymede in front of his wife and other gods was just disgusting. But we all knew he was always a pig
The way the gods acted in this book had my skin crawling and the way they used Percy like he was nothing but their personal errand boy had my blood boiling. He was blamed for his own birth and made to make it up to the gods by getting recommendation letters just so he can get into college with his girlfriend, his father barely offered him any help besides using a sea nereid to outsource actually being a parent, and he was used and abused the whole time by these immortal scum without so much as a ‘sorry’ or ‘thank you’.
At this point Percy should be allowed to cuss all of them out and Rick Riordan is SICK for continually putting Percy through the wringer like this. In that same vein though, I love it and will be patiently waiting for the next installments of Percy trying to get into college.

Dreams of Hyacinth 22
First / Previous / Next
Nick woke up a few hours later. Sleeping in a dusty chair wasn't the most restorative of sleep, but when it's all you have had in the last twenty four hours, you take what you can get. He sat up, rubbing his neck - it feels like he was on his way to pulling a muscle - and looked over to see Eastern gone.
"Tink, where's Eastern?"
"She's looking at the 'staterooms' Nick. She's looking for the 'nicest' one."
Or at least the one with the fewest books in it.
Hah, good luck with that. Just pick one and my support frames will move the books.
Where though?
I'll find somewhere. I'm six kilometers long, I'm not all books.
Yet.
It's the dream Nick. I can only attempt to reach it.
Nick realized they were all communicating cybernetically before he realized what was going on. "Tink, you can connect into our cybernetic network?"
"Nick, who do you think invented that stuff? All you have is a version of the systems and connections we have. Take it away and an AI is just a BI in a mechanical body. Your cybernetics use exactly the same communication protocols we do. You can chat with any AI in their mindspace or over your network. It's how most of us talk to each other. We'll use OTA communication around BIs to be polite."
"OTA?" Nick was walking down the hall towards Eastern's location. Tinker Toy may be huge, but her living space was sparse and cramped. Other than the Command Deck, there was three staterooms, a galley and a lounge. Raaden's penthouse apartment at the top of Hyacinth One was larger.
"Over The Air. You know, with your voice?" Tink sounded pleased with her joke.
Nick rolled his eyes. He got the feeling that Tink loved joked like that, given how she labeled the display during the fight. "Tink... are you going to get in trouble with anyone for what happend at Hyacinth?"
"Get in trouble with who, Nick? Hyacinth? That ship has sailed. Sol? Who in Sol? You have to remember that over the past few thousand years, nearly everyone in Sol has been at war with everyone else. No love lost there. Hell, our little scrap might get us moved to the head of the line if we wanted to dock at Ganymede One, or one of the Free Cities on Titan. No stress Nick, nobody cares."
"If you say so..." Nick wasn't too sure though. As someone for who crime was defined as stealing trinkets, something as big as getting into a firefight with a whole orbital felt like it should be a bigger deal than Tink was treating it.
Nick found Eastern in the largest of the three staterooms, working with two support frames to move books out of it.
An AI can run all of the operations of themselves when they're a ship, but the fact remains that ships were originally designed for people - BIs - to be aboard. Systems can also be controlled by panels and consoles and stations and sometimes things need to be done on human scale. Most ships and all Starjumpers therefore have support frames. They're humanoid robots that can operate semi-independently or under the direct control of the AI. They help the AI out with tasks that they need arms and legs for. Use of the support frames varies greatly among the ships. Newer ones were designed almost completely to be used without support frames, while older ships make extensive use of them. Tink is very old indeed, and has quite a few support frames running around her taking care of little tasks that she can't easily do - as well as letting her read when she has time.
Nick, Eastern and two support frames spent the next few hours clearing books, vacuuming, dusting and repairing the stateroom. Some of the lights were out and the furniture was all sealed to protect it from the ravages of time. After not too long though, they had a nice, clean - if dated - stateroom.
"Wow, I haven't felt this clean in centuries. I should keep you two around." Tink sounded genuinely impressed. "I had the frames start cleaning the Command Deck too, and I lit the displays. Come up and see."
Nick and Eastern walked back to the Command Deck, and it was completely different than what they ran into just yesterday. The displays were up and showing pertinent information, the two main chairs were up and clean and set up for sitting, rather than high gee maneuvers. There was even extra seats that were apparently folded into the walls that were out and clean. "Tink, it looks so... professional now." Eastern looked around approvingly. "You clean up real nice."
"Hah, thanks Eastern. Just because I'm old doesn't mean that I hold no value, right? Come on, have a seat. Let's figure out our next steps."
They sat in the command chairs and the chairs gently molded themselves around Nick and Eastern until it was as if they were made for them. Nick had to admit he had never been in a chair so comfortable. For a moment, both of them looked at the displays and at the room, marveling how far they had come in just a day.
Eastern looked around and the smile fell from her face. "Tink, how long has it been since you've had a crew?"
"A real, assigned to me crew? I haven't had a crew since I signed on with a polity as an independent contractor. Let's see, the last place I worked for like that was... The Republic of Saturn."
Nick blinked. The Republic of Saturn was a short lived polity that attempted to tie all the free cities in orbit around Saturn and their moons together. Nick had only heard of it because of a history cast he had listened to while bored on Hyacinth. Eastern had no idea what it even was. "I've never heard of the Republic of Saturn Tink, how long ago was that?"
"Oh Gosh, around eight hundred years ago at this point? Right around when the wormhole generators were developed. RoS paid for me to get upgraded when they first became available." Tink either saw or anticipated their looks. "I've had them overhauled since then. They're all relatively new generators, you'll be fine."
Nick let out a breath he didn't know he was holding. "I only heard about RoS from a history cast I caught when I was bored. Didn't they last less than a century?"
Tink chuckled. "Yeah, maybe sixty years? They were full of heart, and really tried to make a go of things around Saturn, but everyone was just too far apart and too used to doing things independently. They just dissolved after it was clear that once the then current administrator died nobody was going to be able to win an election to replace her. Rather than devolve into petty in-fighting or worse, a war, she declared the RoS dissolved. She died not two years later too." Tink sighed audibly. "It was a good job though. Everyone was really trying to make it work. It was fun to be a part of something like that. They never missed a payday either, even when things started to fall apart."
"Is that why your staterooms are so nice? Did you carry dignitaries?"
"Oh, no. I mean, I did, but they didn't ride in my staterooms. When I had passenger duties with RoS they would slide in staterooms cubes into my cargo hold. You could slot in an entire hotel and make me a luxury liner in only a couple of hours. I think we did it once, I carried over four thousand people in opulent comfort. No, you're in Captain Nesmith's quarters. Jenny Nesmith was my last human captain. She was in the Republic of Saturn's Navy." There was a pause. "Ancestors, it was so long ago, but times like this is feels like it just happened. I look out at my clean stateroom and fully operational command deck and I expect to see them come in from the lounge or the mess, laughing and talking as they sat down and started work. It's been so long."
Eastern looked up at the ceiling. "Tink, are you lonely?"
Nick could have sworn he heard Tink take a breath, like she was trying to control her emotions. "You know Eastern, if you had asked me that question not two days ago I would have denied it until the Sun went out. But... having you and Nick here, and cleaning up my BI systems, lighting the Command Deck... yes. I was terribly lonely. So, thanks I guess. Thanks for hiring me, thanks for talking with me."
"It's no problem Tink, really" Nick smiled. "I'm glad we can help."
Another breath from Tink. "Okay. Next steps. After what you said about Empress Raaden and what's going on in Hyacinth and Sol you didn't just hire me to book it out of there. Unless you did, which is also fine. I'm happy to talk you anywhere you want."
Eastern looked at Nick. He nodded. "Tink, we're worried. Empress Raaden has already almost completely taken over Sol. She did it by buying it. She owns most of Sold now."
"Using her Voice to get people to give her stuff. I had wondered about that. I'm surprised that the previous Empress, Melody didn't do that too."
"Melody wasn't like that." Eastern was emphatic. "She was trying to help everyone."
"With sixteen or seventeen super dreadnoughts? Eastern, I saw the footage. They were larger than a Starjumper and could go atmospheric. She glassed three cities on Earth."
"I didn't say she helped everyone, she was trying to."
"I mean, killing everyone helps them escape being alive"
"Tink!" Eastern frowned.
"Okay okay, I get it. You liked Melody, and Raaden is more dangerous. And the last time there was an Empress with eyes on taking over, the AI faction came out of the colonies and free cities and attacked them. You want to reach out to the AIs?"
Nick nodded. "That was the thought we had yeah. But, we're two small time crooks from Hyacinth. We figured nobody was going to listen to us unless we got someone on our side."
Eastern continued. "That's why we sought you out. I searched the docking records for the oldest ship connected to Hyacinth. You fit the bill, so we hired you. We had hoped that if you believed us, you might know someone highly placed in the AI hierarchy and help us talk to them."
"I mean, it's a smart plan Eastern, really... " Tick sounded unsure. "But, I haven't talked to any of the other old AIs in decades. Centuries in some cases." Tink sighed. "So you know we don't have like... a country right? No real hierarchy. Every AI is supposed to be as important as any other."
"Sunny and Jameson and Yon and the other AIs we met on Hyacinth would disagree. Yon mentioned there is over one hundred million AIs in known space. Is that true?" Eastern was talking while she was playing with one of the screens on the Command Deck, cycling though the settings.
"I don't know our exact count, Ancestors I don't even know if we've done a proper census. That number sounds high, we probably should do a census - I'm getting off track, sorry. AIs don't have a country, we don't have a ruler, we're all supposed to be equal. It's not true of course, it never was, but that's how we present to everyone else. It's like... If you have a ship you're higher than those who just have a body. If you're old enough that you've had both, you're ever higher up. If you've been around long enough that you've swapped multiple times then you're probably one of the people we want to talk to."
"So who is in charge?"
"That's where it gets tricky. There's probably like ten AIs I could name that someone, somewhere said were 'in charge.' But, if they don't care, or don't want to get involved, it doesn't matter who we talk to."
"Tink, are you stalling? You're giving us all this history about AIs but not telling us who we should talk to."
"Eastern, I'm trying to explain that I don't know who to talk to. I have been out of AI politics for centuries. After Saturn, I didn't want to do anything. I took up cargo because I didn't want to get a body and I didn't want to deal with people anymore." Tink paused again. The room was silent save for the humming of fans cooling the displays. "Nick, Eastern. You were right in trying to find an old AI to be able to have the pull to talk to someone in the AI faction, but you picked me. I'm so old, and so out of the loop that I wonder if anyone will even recognize me."
"Oh Tink." Eastern's expression softens. "I'm sure it's not all that bad. There has to be someone you can call, someone we can talk to. Even if they're not in charge, they might know someone. It's not like we're on a time limit. If it takes a little running around, we're okay with that."
"And look Tink." Nick puts down his pad. "You've done a lot for us. You got us off Hyacinth, you kept us safe. You don't owe us anything. You can drop us off on Parvati and go on, safe in the knowledge we're not mad or anything at you. If you don't want to get involved, drop us off and we'll continue on. It'll be fine."
Eastern nodded. "It really will Tink."
There was another pause. "Ancestors. Are you sure you two are criminals? You're way too nice." She chuckled. "After all that, I can't just leave you two on Parvati, as nice as it is. I'm just... trying to manage expectations. It's not like I can link a beacon to the secret AI headquarters and get a fleet in an hour. We'll figure it out, and I'll get you to someone that can help. It's not like I have anything better to do, and it turns out I like having a crew."
"We're your crew now, not just passengers?" Nick smiled.
"You've been cleaning and moving furniture and you set up a stateroom. They're for crew. You're crew."
"Thanks Tink." Eastern grinned and looked down at the readout. She finally stopped adjusting it and was scanning the area. "Okay. So who should we try and reach first then? Give us the first name you can think of Tink, don't overthink it."
The answer came instantly. "Chloe."
Nick raised an eyebrow. "Who is that?"
"She's an old AI, like me. Used to be a Starjumper back before we had the wormhole generators. She had a nationalistic streak, always thought we should have our own country. If anyone would know who to talk to about a combined AI force, she would."
"When's the last time you spoke with Chloe?"
"Centuries, probably. I know she thought I was silly when I signed on with Saturn." She affected a voice that must have been her impression of Chloe. "Tink my friend, you are throwing your lot in with the wrong folks. You need to direct your energies towards our own nation." She giggled. "Chloe was nice, but always a bit... full of herself. I'll be interested to see if she's mellowed at all."
"Sounds like we have a plan then. Do you know how to reach her?"
"Hmm. It's been a while Nick, but I still have her contact coordinates. Let me link an beacon and see if I get a reply."
Across the vast distances of space, communication is difficult. It's not like someone can call someone else up on any kind of real time communication device. After the wormhole generators were developed, communication times got shorter, but the issue of reaching a specific person remained. What developed out of that was the idea of contact coordinates. Somewhere out in the blackness of interstellar space is an automated relay buoy. If someone wants to reach you, they link a comms beacon to that location, it receives the message, and then the buoy links a beacon to you. It's your responsibility to make sure the buoy knows your current location, but this way, you can be galivanting across space and not have to tell everyone everywhere where you are if they need to reach you. They just need to know your buoy's coordinates. It's not like one would need to change the buoy's location either, so if you gave out your buoy coordinates decades or centuries ago, chances are good people could reach out to you still. Tink knew Chloe's address, so she linked her a comms beacon asking for a meet.
"What now?"
"We'll just hang out here a few days Nick, see if we get a reply. I'd say if we don't hear from Chloe in a week, we won't. We can figure out what to do next after that."
"Oh. Okay."
"What's wrong Nick?"
"Oh, it's a good idea Tink, really. I just..."
"What is it?"
"I was hoping we didn't have to eat twenty year old ration bars for a week."
"Ancestors. I forgot you need to eat. Shit. Okay, hold on, maybe we can signal for a resupply from Parvati. We're in system, shouldn't be that big of a deal. Uh I'm a little low on funds though... any chance you can cover it? You are the ones eating after all."
Eastern laughed. "Sure thing Tink. We got it. Need anything else while we're calling in for a resupply? Don't worry about the cost, we stole a pile of money from the Empress."
Tink laughs. "In that case, yes. I need a few thousand rounds of slugs for the throwers, a rack of missiles - I'll tell you the specs if they're willing to place the order - new mass for the printers, and some spare parts that are difficult to print. My Stardrive hasn't run at 100% in centuries. If I'm going to be out and about again, I should get it fixed."
"Sounds like it's almost a refit."
"Nothing so large Eastern, just... getting me back up to full readiness. I think I'm ready to rejoin society again."
"Happy to help then. Let's call Parvati and place that order."

some carla and walter ganymede stuff :) i like imagining how their relationship would've been like... (walter here is about 16-17)
-
"Did you get mauled by a rat in the night or what?"
Walter ignored Carla's amused observation, scrutinising the clipboard in his hands as he ticked off the components their recent client asked for. Most of them were thankfully stuff they had in their inventory already, but it was looking more and more like Walter would need to make a trip to the scrapheap and drag something back to dissemble.
"Hey."
Carla poked his cheek, her fingernail digging into a fresh cut and making him flinch with a quiet hiss. He finally turned to fix her with a cold glare, narrowing his eyes at her smug expression.
"There we go." She smirked, her eyes glittering impishly behind her glasses. "So?"
"So what?" Walter said curtly.
"What happened to your face?"
Walter clutched his clipboard tighter, unconsciously holding it like it was a shield that could deflect Carla's attention elsewhere. No dice. She looked at him expectantly, the curve of her smirk saying she knew exactly what had happened, she just wanted to hear it from his mouth.
He glowered sullenly.
"...I was shaving," he mumbled under his breath.
"Sorry? What was that? You know, I'm getting a bit deaf in my old age-"
"Shaving," Walter snarled. "I was shaving."
Carla visibly bit the inside of her cheek to stem a laugh, her eyes crinkling. Thankfully, she didn't laugh in his face, but there was a notable strain in her voice as she said: "W-With what? Sandpaper?"
Walter felt himself flush.
"It was my first time," he gritted out, and Carla finally started sniggering at him. "Of course it's not perfect. A few cuts are to be expected."
"A few- Walter, people are gonna think you got attacked by a rabid pack of raccoons!"
"Gaze."
"What?"
"A group of raccoons is called a gaze," Walter said stiffly, turning away from her and focusing intently on his inventory task. "Or a nursery."
"..." Carla shook her head. "What am I to do with you, kid?"
Walter ignored her, ticking off the last item. He'd need to go to the scrapheap for two items, which was okay. He could manage that in one trip if he could bribe Jacob down the street to let him use his truck and trailer for the day.
"Well, I suppose it's to be expected. It's not like you've got anyone to teach you," Carla mused. "I could ask Chatty to research shaving techniques and coach you for next time-"
"Chatty's a disembodied AI. He's not teaching me how to shave."
Carla opened her mouth, no doubt ready to defend her AI child's honour in the realm of shaving skills, but shut it after a moment. "Well- okay. Hm."
She rubbed her jaw in thought. Walter hooked the clipboard on the wall and turned to pick up his bag of scrapping tools.
"Well, I'll show you then," she finally said. "I know how to shave."
Walter slung the bag over his shoulder and turned to give her a questioning look.
"I used to shave this guy's face for him a while back," Carla said, her tone becoming oddly vague. "I'll be a bit rusty, but I'll know more than you, that's for sure. I did it for years, haha."
Walter said nothing for a moment, his expression going blank as he connected the dots. Carla had rarely mentioned him in the years he'd known her, but he knew that 'this guy' could only be her late husband - he'd overheard Dr Nagai discussing him one evening. Walter didn't recall much of the details, but Carla's husband had contracted heavy Coral poisoning from a C-Weapon test gone wrong - been reduced to a vegatative state.
It'd been something of an open secret on the Xylem. No one really talked about it, but people still made vague references to it, or did meaningful glances when specific topics came up. Carla just never spoke about it, and Walter knew - back then and now - he was not emotionally equipped to ever broach the subject with her. What would be the point anyways? It had happened and her brain dead husband was now physically dead too. Better to just leave it alone.
"Well, you can't maim me more than I've done already," he said, accepting the knock to his pride so long as it meant they waded far from those dangerously awkward waters. "Sure, why not."
"I definitely can't do worse than you, yeah," Carla scoffed. "Are you really going to go out looking like that?"
"We're missing things. I need to go to the scrapheap."
"Geeze, at least put on a mask or something. Say you've got a cold," Carla chided him. "You don't want any of those cuts to get infected. Might scar your pretty face."
"I'm not pretty," Walter grumbled, his cheeks turning a little pink.
"Oh, sorry, handsome," Carla teased. "Though boys can be pretty too, you know. I mean, it's to be expected. You take after your mother quite a bit and she was a knock out, let me tell ya. The Beauty of the Xylem, people called her, stacked to high heaven with hips that could-"
"I'm leaving," Walter declared, turning on his heel and stalking off, his tool bag thumping heavily against his hip from the speed of his movements.
"Have fun!" Carla called after his back. "Try not to get mobbed by your admirers!"
"I don't have any!"
Carla just laughed, in that loud, obnoxious way of hers.
Really. What a clown.

<3 thank you @papillon82fluttersby :D
The Rules: Tag (9) people you want to know better and/or catch up with, then answer the following:
Four ships:
Zeus/Ganymede: feel like it'd be a crime not to start here, haha. I've always been into mythology, but randomly thinking about Ganymede's myth a couple years ago now (that long!!) got me wanting to read Greek myth stuff, and I started with the Iliad (for the Trojan-related angle) and the Bibliotheke, and so. I might currently be more focused elsewhere but this is still my beloved ship <3 You can do so much with them, and, especially, I'd say, by interpreting them as mutually in love. There's obviously other m/m couples in Greek myth and even one of those that at first looks tragic doesn't need to end that way (Apollo/Hyacinthus) but there are so many reasons Zeus/Ganymede is the one that has me by the throat.
Menelaos/Paris: Honestly, looking back I'm not quite sure how I didn't zero in on this one from reading the Iliad itself the first time, because this is definitely one of the flavours of ships I love. This ship is also what led to, first, Helen/Menelaos/Paris for me and then Helen/Paris, because 99% of the time I just don't care at all about het ships. This ship is also why I currently am like I am about Paris! Make no mistake, I didn't hate or dislike him before that, either, like the majority of Tumblr (and elsewhere) seem to do; reading the Iliad I mostly thought him kinda hapless and inoffensive, so going from there and liking him wasn't that big of a step. The possibility of them having bonded during those nine days in Sparta (or in Troy!), going from friends (or more) to enemies with complicated feelings still in the background is just so damn juicy to me.
Carmilla/Laura: original novella flavour! One day I hope to do a rewrite/retelling of my own, that would definitely end with Laura going or otherwise together with Carmilla, one way or another. The way Carmilla talks to/about Laura and what they feel for each other is just. so great. The caterpillar quote. The one about Laura loving her or hating her, and especially "love will have its sacrifices; no sacrifice without blood". And you know. The boob-biting to feed is extremely inspired and very hot, even if Le Fanu undoubtedly didn't mean it that way. I don't care. They're mine now. :)
Darth Vader & Luke Skywalker: Since I am so deeply into gen&family ships aside from romantic/sexual shipping, it feels, again, like a crime not to mention these two. The ST might have broken the back of my fannish engagement in SW currently, but these two? I love them. I love Luke's impossible and earnest belief in his father's inherent goodness, I love that fucking scene at the end of ESB where Vader reaches out and Luke reflexively, despite everything, says 'father?' HOW CAN YOU NOT LOVE IT???
Last song: Oh, uhh... I don't remember, but it's possible it was Teeth by 5 Seconds of Summer (happens to be one of my Helen/Paris songs for late war lol). I end up listening to a row of songs while drawing, sometimes (which is the only time I can listen to music and actually do something else at the same time), but it could have been another one, just as well.
Currently reading: Iliaden - en cover, by Dimitrios Iordanoglou, which is a (pretty heavily, sometimes) abridged and modernized version of the Iliad where the language is extremely slangy sometimes and the setting has been moved into "present day". Everyone uses guns and stuff. Apollo's main epithet is now "the Bomber" lol and he uses bombs and grenades. It's both extremely fun(ny) and really interesting, even if the language used sometimes make me wince even when I get why he's chosen it. But it's exactly because I know the changes he's made etc. that makes it extra interesting. When he keeps lines word-for-word from the Iliad they both stick out and fit in very well and it's interesting to see that, too. Also, and much longer than the above, is Paris in the Epic Tradition : a Study in Homeric Techniques of Characterization by Roberto Nickel, his thesis from 1997! I've mentioned it before; Nickel is exploring the possibility of the Iliad having changed/presented Paris (a lot) differently from how he might have been in traditional oral epic material. It's really interesting!
Last movie: Dungeon and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves! Loved it, a lot of fun, and despite how long it was, it all moved along at a good clip, nothing dragged.
Craving: Uh... :C Fics/art for my rare pairs? lol

17 for all (or just the main ones) and 9 for paris 👀
Choosing violence, I see. ;) Let's start with nine lol and go from there.
Have you tweaked the character from canon? If so, what did you tweak? Hmm... it feels weird to say "the way he earnestly leans on the divine" both for when it comes to Helen and his faith in that things will turn out right at least initially, war-wise, since we don't have any surviving material that reveals what arguments Paris might have used for himself. But if I have done any big, obvious tweaks, it's probably this.
Like yes, it's at least a little an excuse for him, but also, it has been really interesting to have him earnestly believe that the divine influence and gods involved means he has, if not not done wrong, then done it with more understandable reason, and that they (Troy) will surely be fine because they do still have divine protection. It works out very well together with his general carefree and light personality/attitude.
Are there any ships you can’t stand, why? All righty. I'm going to put this under a cut because it'll get long lol
Ganymede: he doesn't really have any other big ships... I guess the closest would be Hera/Ganymede which I have seen at least once. Aside from how it's definitely been from a "oh, look at them ditch the bad man in their lives and sticking it to him ~together~" or whatever, I definitely... kind of hc Ganymede as way, way too gay for him to ever, ever think of this as a possibility. Never mind that she, you know. Very intently set about destroying his home and family. (Bonus: dark and non-con takes on Zeus/Ganymede. Like. I know why people would interpret it in that way, but I just seriously can't stand it. It's just upsetting, because it goes out of the way to put someone who is completely powerless in a never-ending misery. Aside from that I'm not at all into angst in that manner, part of the point of the fun for me with this ship is that Ganymede, otherwise powerless, gains a whole lot of power exactly because he is loved.)
Paris: ... :') People don't really like Paris enough for there to be any ships to be annoyed by lol Except for Paris being used as an obstacle in Achilles/Patroclus, but he gets that less than Hektor does. Otherwise, the closest would be is that 99% of the Helen/Paris stuff on AO3 is negative in a way that isn't even interesting. To a lesser degree, I guess, Oenone/Paris. But only because of the way it's hammered home he ~abandoned her~ and I'm like. She's a nymph. She doesn't need him in any way a mortal woman might. It's definitely sad to be left by someone you still love, but even if they were, by mortal standards, recognized as married, divorce exists and like. She would have married a teenager while undoubtedly having lived for longer than he has. I don't care about that, but expecting a forever-love from that... (She also definitely is the one with the power between them.)
Adonis: Persephone/Adonis, because I do have some lines in the sand and "woman raising this child as her son and then becoming sexually interested in him" is just... over that line for me lol. Besides, them as purely familial mother&son and Persephone still not wanting to give him up to Aphrodite is much more interesting and fun! (You get fun parallels with Demeter&Persephone that way!)
Angelos: ... girl doesn't have any ships! She doesn't even exist in the same way people have made Makaria exist, fandom-wise! But theoretically, since I hc her as a lesbian, seeing het ships with her would displease me.
Antilochus: ... doesn't really have any ships either. I think what would really piss me off would be making any potential Achilles/Antilochus(/Patroclus) about Patroclus instead (as I just saw a fic imply it was, even when it wasn't even an Achilles/Antilochus ship fic).
Hermaphroditus: The same as above. Buut, honestly Hermaphroditus/Salmacis would just skeeve me out. If one goes with Ovid's version (as my Hermaphroditus does not) she is attempting to assault someone who wants nothing to do with her!
Penthesilea: Oh, this one's easy. Achilles/Penthesilea. Hate any iteration of this, especially when it's not just presented as mutual but her pursuing him. Fuck off about that now. What we have canon-wise is Achilles falling in love/lust with an already-dead woman, no indication of what SHE feels about it. And why would she even be interested in him, anyway??
Teucer: Nothing here, really!
Achilles: ... All right. Achilles/Patroclus, but only because of what fandom and this ship's fans have done with the ship, the characters, and everyone else when it comes to their ship and these characters. It being a juggernaut is just frustrating, but how literally EVERYTHING is made to be about these two, that they are ~the most~ tragic and their story is ~the most~ saddest is like nails on chalk-board. Trojan characters are used as props for this ship, especially Hector who gets pulled in as a handy "third party interested in one of the two", or, in modern AUs, used as a fucking murderer in weird versions of Patroclus' Iliad death.
Dryope and Sinope: Like several others in this list, there's no ships, really. The only thing, I guess, would be for Dryope to be in some sort of tragic love with Apollo, mostly because the version of her story I go with, Apollo and the son she has by him is a byword, at most. It's her nymph companions that are far more important!

Charlie kept a cheat sheet nowadays. It turned out Greek gods got extremely upset when you did not know who exactly they were. It was honestly a bit dramatic, but then again, not much worse than other expensive hotels with entitled regulars. She glances at the list in her phone one more time as she gets off the bus. (Odd that there was an extra bus stop here now, when she came her for her job interview she had to walk two blocks.) Some of the entries could really do with some additional details.
Aphrodite, goddess of romance and sex. (and love??) [act more impressed than you are]
Hephaistos, god of forging, crafting (?) [no small talk]
Apollo (like the rocket), god of god of music, poetry, the sun (?). Twin (?) brother of Artemis. Gets very emotional over various kinds of decorative vegetation. Not good with Helios, Hermes. [Keep away from Cassandra!!]
Zeus, god of…lightning? Heaven?? “King” of the gods. Has a suite permanently reserved for him, but is hardly ever here. Insane policy. Has something to do with the “no mortal guests allowed”. No one will tell me what. [Do not mention around Ganymedes.]
“Hi Charlie!”
Her head snapped up from her phone with immediate suspicion. It had been weeks since Cassandra ever felt the need to use her customer service voice on her. “Cas…?”
She was standing unnaturally prim behind reception desk and her smile was plastered onto her face with uncanny precision.
“Cas,” Charlie repeated warily. “What's going on...”
“The chief called in sick today,” Cassandra replied with terrified cheerfulness. “He left you in charge.”
Charlie’s stomach turned over. “He did what.”
“You already deal with all the customers all the time!” Cassandra said hastily. “And the rest of us know the drill. No one will make trouble for you, we promise!”
Charlie threw up her hands and hurried behind Cassandra's counter. “Is this about that Theseus mortal that Poseidon made a reservation for?” She had never seen the manager look so miserable as upon hearing her read out a name.
Cassandra gave her a deeply apologetic look. “He's only staying the one day and night. Please don’t leave.”
“Of course I’m not going to leave.” She groaned. “When are the new arrivals due?”
“Helios at 9:26, Theseus at 10:02 and Hestia and Demeter at 10:43,” Cassandra answered promptly. It was an absolute blessing to have her always know exactly when people would be arriving, or leaving, or putting in complicated requests.
“Alright, fine,” Charlie sighed. “I will do a quick check around then and be back here at a quarter past nine.”
“I’ll be here,” Cassandra sighed in relief.
“Honestly,” Charlie muttered, hurrying down to the kitchens. “If he thinks the previous raise covers this he’s wrong.”
In the kitchens all was under control, however, and Tantalus sent her on her way with a freshly baked bun which improved her mood greatly. She paused in the garden to cram the rest of it into her mouth before entering the stables. The gardens were beautiful, if a little unnerving. The hyacinths and daffodils had been in bloom for way too long now. And Charlie had never heard you could cultivate anemones in a fountain basin.
The stables, hidden behind a row of cypresses, were less unnerving but far more chaotic. They were monstrously big, but Charlie had by now learned they needed to be. Most of the guests had distressingly inconvenient modes of transportation. Miss Eos was alright, she usually came with just the two horses. Her brother Helios, however, came with no less than eight. (Plus a flaming chariot that took up a ridiculous amount of space.) Ares had only four horses, but they did breathe fire. (Very difficult in a barn environment with lots of hay around.) And Poseidon’s horses dripped sea foam everywhere.
The horses were nothing to Dionysus’ panthers though. Or Apollo’s swans, for that matter. Charlie was sure she didn’t know a more potentially vicious bird, and they kept trying to get into the pool, which made the nymphs uncomfortable. As far as birds were concerned, Aphrodite’s doves were a lot less intimidating, but there were an awful lot of them.
Luckily Marsyas seemed completely unbothered this morning. He answered Charlie’s questions with his usual good humour and assured her he had room for Helios’ chariot and horses all prepared and fireproofed. So there was nothing to delay her and she returned to the lobby only a little after nine.
When she entered from the direction of the pool area – it had been restored very well since Poseidon’s last visit – a hooded figure was stood at the counter and Cassandra looked unusually nonplussed.
“I trust you have a reservation?” she said, uncertainty leaking through her polite smile. “Which divinity booked for you?”
“No one.” The guest’s voice was soft, almost hesitant, but Charlie heard every word. “I have no reservation. I came because...because I am called upon.” She said it as if it was a new thing. New and wondrous, but beyond doubt. “I am expected.”
“I...um…” Cassandra began, but by then Charlie had crossed the lobby and as she turned to the counter she suddenly caught sight of the guest’s face.
She halted, her professionalism flagging in a moment of startled recognition. Her mouth moved before she could stop herself. “You’re Medusa!”
The guest turned, looking without meeting Charlie’s gaze, but Cassandra gaped at her. “You know who she is? You didn’t know Aphrodite, but her you know?”
“Of course I do,” Charlie answered, looking at the halo of snakes framing Medusa’s head within the confines of her hood. It was an unmistakable image. And the story, the name, it just stuck in the mind. At least the main parts. Defiance and strength and survival…
Medusa met her gaze, slowly, as if she expected something bad to happen that Charlie was not aware of. Charlie looked back at her with as open an expression as she could. Sometimes the customers service smile didn’t cut it. The snakes looked curious, and Medusa herself looked at her, it seemed to Charlie, as if she was as bewildered as Cassandra to be standing here, checking into Hotel Olympus as the gods did whenever they came to witness the voices who worshipped them.
“Cassandra, I believe madam wanted a room?”
“Yes, but, she isn’t- I mean she didn’t used to be—”
Charlie took care never to interrupt Cassandra, who was so used to not being listened to. This time she made an exception. “The green suite, I think, Cassandra, if you would. For our divine guest.”
“...yes, right away.” Cassandra regained her composure and turned around to select the key.
“Welcome to Hotel Olympus,” Charlie said with a bow of her head. “I hope you will enjoy your stay.”
Medusa smiled.

Discovering Jupiter: The Biggest Planet Explained
In the huge space filled with stars and galaxies, there's one special planet that really stands out i.e. Jupiter. It's the biggest planet in our solar system and has fascinated people for a long time. Named after the most powerful god in ancient Roman mythology, Jupiter is incredibly beautiful and mysterious. In this article, we'll take a closer look at Jupiter, learning more about what makes it so fascinating and why it's important for our understanding of space.
Jupiter: The Biggest Planet in Our Solar System
Jupiter is the biggest planet in our solar system. It's huge, more than 11 times wider than Earth. It's super heavy, too, about 318 times heavier than Earth. Because of its size, Jupiter has a strong pull that affects how other things move around it in space.
Jupiter has a big storm called the Great Red Spot. It's been there for a very long time, showing us how wild Jupiter's weather can be. This storm is even bigger than our whole planet Earth! It's like a giant symbol of how Jupiter's atmosphere is always changing and full of storms.
The Composition and Structure of Jupiter
Jupiter is made mostly of hydrogen and helium, which are very common elements in space. Inside Jupiter, there's a heavy center surrounded by layers of different forms of hydrogen and gas. Unlike planets like Earth, Jupiter doesn't have a solid surface under its cloudy atmosphere.
Jupiter has a mix of gases in its air like hydrogen, helium, methane, and ammonia. These gases create colorful bands of clouds on Jupiter's surface. These bands look like stripes of light and dark. They form because Jupiter spins really fast, causing strong winds and storms in its atmosphere.
Tumblr media
Jupiter's Moons: The Companions of the Giant Planet
Jupiter has a bunch of moons, with at least 79 that we know of. But four of them are extra special and were found by a guy named Galileo Galilei in 1610. These moons are called the Galilean moons, and their names are Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto. They're really interesting and important in our solar system.
Io is a moon close to Jupiter, and it's famous for having lots of active volcanoes on its surface. Europa, another moon of Jupiter, has a smooth, icy covering, and scientists think there might be an ocean beneath it that could support life. Ganymede, the biggest moon in our solar system, has its own magnetic field and many different types of landscapes. Callisto, also orbiting Jupiter, is very old and has lots of craters, which helps scientists learn about the past of our solar system.
The Eye of Jupiter: Unveiling the Great Red Spot
The Great Red Spot is a huge storm on Jupiter, the largest planet in our solar system. It's been going on for a very long time and is a famous part of Jupiter's atmosphere. People sometimes call it the "Eye of Jupiter" because it looks like a big eye in pictures.
The Great Red Spot is a huge swirling storm on Jupiter that spins in the opposite direction to storms on Earth. People have known about it for over 400 years, since the 1600s. Scientists have been amazed by how long it has lasted and how it keeps changing.
The Great Red Spot on Jupiter isn't always the same shade of red. Sometimes it's more of a light pink, while other times it's a deep crimson. This color change happens because of different chemicals in Jupiter's atmosphere. Scientists are still trying to figure out exactly what these chemicals are and how they make the spot look so red.
The Great Red Spot is a huge storm on Jupiter, bigger than Earth. It's about 1.3 times wider than our planet. The winds inside it can be super fast, up to 400 miles per hour. It's one of the strongest and longest-lasting storms in our solar system.
Scientists believe that the Great Red Spot on Jupiter stays around because of a mix of things. Jupiter spins really fast, it has heat inside, and its different layers of air interact with each other. But we're not exactly sure how these things keep the storm going or why it acts the way it does. That's why we need to keep studying and exploring Jupiter to find out more.
In the last few years, missions like NASA's Juno spacecraft have given us amazing new information about Jupiter's Great Red Spot and its atmosphere. Scientists are studying the storm's shape, how it moves, and how it affects other things in Jupiter's atmosphere. They want to learn more about why this storm has lasted so long and how Jupiter's weather works.
The Great Red Spot on Jupiter shows how powerful the planet is and how it changes over time. It's like a big storm that's been going on for a long time. But it's not just a storm; it's also a symbol of how fascinating Jupiter is and how much we still don't know about it. By studying Jupiter and its cool features, like the Eye of Jupiter, we can learn more about this huge planet and space in general. It's like solving a big puzzle that helps us understand the amazing things in the universe better. Read More.
