April 19, 2024 update from the Battleship Texas Foundation
"What kind of wood was on the deck of Battleship Texas? - The majority of the wood deck was originally long leaf yellow pine. However, teak was used around hatches, foundations, barbettes, and the boundaries of decks. During the 1930's some of the ship's pine decking was renewed with Douglas Fir.
What wood will be going back down? - The deck of Battleship Texas will be renewed with pine.
Is the deck going to be painted? - The wooden deck will be painted Deck Blue 20-B.
Will the steel deck be repaired? - The steel deck is going to be sandblasted, repaired, and coated prior to the installation of the new deck.
The 1990 pine decking is being removed from Battleship Texas. The steel will be sand blasted and repaired before new pine is laid.
