3 Games that double-down on video games as works of art
Not every time do you play a video game purely for the entertainment we expect. Video games themselves are also works of art; they radiate with creativity and human touch, their soundtracks alone attest to that.
However not every game is designed with the intent to bring back money, become an infamous popular classic, or gain the archetype of being a esports play. Many games are designed with only the objective of an experience at hand, and these five games nail it!
Iron Lung
Tumblr media
Iron Lung is a short horror video game located on Steam, developed by David Szymanski. He purposefully developed the game to last about an hour of gameplay, however that doesn’t budge on its insanely well designed atmosphere in the first place.
It is beyond grim, and spawns tons of questions that will likely never be answered. It is a single player experience, in which you play a convict trapped within an outdated submarine, sent to explore an ominous blood ocean on a moon.
The sound design is eerie and perfect. The game aims for a sense of isolation, dread, and hopelessness. The exposition is delightfully spooky, followed by gradual built up to singular moment in the game. The atmosphere is retro but exceeds in its dreariness, and truly gives players the feeling of being locked into a submarine blind underneath the depths of a blood ocean on the moon.
Each objective within the game reached not only lures the player to continue on, but adds to the anxiety of the game built-in atmosphere. The submarine itself also begins deteriorating, perhaps even reflecting how the player character himself is falling apart at the seams and losing all hope. It built an experience for sure.
SUPERHOT
Tumblr media
SUPERHOT is a first-person action game, where you are simulating a man with inhuman abilities going on a deadly rampage as the world seemingly throws armies of opponents against you. The game spans onto several platforms, with many different ways to play, and also a handful of variations of the game.
This is another game heavy on building on experience. It starts much more innocent feeling, which is accompanied by its addictive smooth gameplay, where it appears as an everyday looping action game. However quickly everything seems to be going much more wrong, and the story being told rapidly increases in darkness.
The maps being to warp. The red enemies sometimes mimic innocent civilians, desperate forces attempting to stop you, and eventually they too morph and change. In SUPERHOT: Mind Control Delete levels are available to play, with snippets of our player character’s sanity being shown.
In an attempt to finish or continuing playing such smooth and fun gameplay, the players end up mimicking the character’s endless aggressive addiction and spiraling sanity. As dialogue is discovered it feels both aimed at the player and the character, and the your actions are become done methodically with sadness. Now both you and the character are searching for answers, whilst continuing a maddening cycle.
Papers Please
Tumblr media
Papers Please was created by Lucas Pope. As a work of art it not only serves an experience that stays with you, but makes statements against many post-WW2 world problems. Heavily inspired by the border control during the Cold War, especially from Yugoslavic nations and the Soviet Union, Papers Please challenges both your attention to detail, patience, and empathy.
In Papers Please you play a border control agent in the fictional nation of Arstotzka. Similar to SUPERHOT and Iron Lung, as soon as the game is opened, the tone is thrown in the face of players. This time a slavic inspired dreary militaristic anthem booms, as the title and logo is revealed.
The complexity of the border transactions, along with the sudden interruptions to the gameplay’s monotony, makes the game engaging and fresh. However the struggle of the player character is also quickly put on the table after the end of the first day. The game grows more and more complex as the days pass on, and eventually your character will face a time limit on their life.
Each character plays a role in adding to the atmosphere. Even the fictional nations, pixel art visuals, and sound design are built with the purpose of drawing out the depressing atmosphere the border, and Arstotzka offer. The ups are memorable, great, and heartstring tugging. While the downs are just the same, while also reminding the players of their character’s reality.
Authors Notes
I have played the final two of these games, and I have played a lot of them. I suggest go and play them, or maybe even relive them if you already have them.

PAPERS PLEASE INSPECTOR OC
Name: Markus Miller
Age: 26
Nationality: Arstotskian, but canonically Arstotzka is in Germany. So I suppose German.
Sexuality: bisexual who has no idea he is bisexual.
Face claim: Loid Forger from Spy x family
Backstory: Markus is from a village called Nirsk, and at least his father still lives there. His mother passed away when he was a child. He had a relatively normal childhood for a boy in the year 1960s, mostly helping his father with his work. He is a very smart and capable man, his father was upset when he left, mainly because he helped him around a lot. He still keeps in touch with him.
Markus' name is drawn in the 1982 October labor lottery and he is assigned to work at the Grestin border checkpoint where he started on November 23rd, 1982. He has daily 12-hour shifts from 6am to 6pm. A class-8 apartment is given to him and his family, but working very hard, he managed to get that to class 5, the highest class a worker like him can legally have.
Personality: Markus is a stern and serious man who cares about his family more than anything. His son always comes first, along with wife, uncle in law, niece, mother in law. He is often kept professional, but he can be friendly when needed. He knows when to let loose, and that is usually not when he is on duty, catching criminals or letting people pass. Loyal to his country, he refused to work with EZIC, nor did he accept any bribes, and didn't let anyone who didn't have the right paperwork's inside. The only exception is one of his friends, Sergui's girlfriend, who he lets in. And also Jorji, a man he has grown used to seeing. He allowed him in, only once, knowing full well he had drugs on. Also, well.. technically that man who asked to get in to kill his child's murderer. But knowing he would do the same for his own son, he couldn't even think about refusing. It got him a permit, but that's alright. He had only gotten 4 permits in his whole career, Three of them being the cases stated above, and the 4. One being him having to let in someone who doesn't have access to artstotzka just because she is his boss's friend. Long story short- he is very Good at his job.
He might seem like a scary and tough guy on the outside, but he is a very nice man. Someone you can trust. A man who will support you whenever you need. A man who will give you his last money if you told him you need it for medicine, even if he has to sleep hungry that night. Once you melt that cold heart a little, it starts melting away by itself.

Wade sat down Indian style, resting his elbow on his thigh and placing his head gingerly in his hand. He chose not to intrude on the conversation Lucas and Arthur were already having, rather he would enter casually if he felt he had something to add.
He was exhausted anyway, having walked a long way to get here, and they had time to kill.
They were still waiting on one more member to their four man army.
Polina Petrova.
A short but very tough Arstotzkan woman, usually stoic yet filled with pent up rage.
They waited nearly an hour, Wade deciding he had nothing to contribute to the conversation, before they finally heard a greeting laced with that familiar Arstotzkan accent.
Lucas instantly spun on the spot, happy to see his old friend. Smiling like an idiot, he quickly stood, lost his balance, found his footing, and then dragged the poor woman into a bear hug.
"Linny!" He yelled, ignoring her struggles to escape his grasp.
"I told you to stop calling me such childish nickname!" She grunted as she attempted to shove the bear of a man away from her.
He finally let go, patting her hard on the shoulder, which barely phased her.
"Its nice to see you again" Arthur said politely, offering one of his signature friendly smiles. The same smile that made the rest of the team feel they could trust him.
Wade stayed silent, but smiled and nodded in her direction as a greeting.
He and Polina never really got on that well, neither did he and Lucas. Arthur was kind to him, and believed in him when no one else did, so he and Arthur were friendly at least.
"We should go, now that we're all here" Arthur said, and motioned for them all to follow him.
"What is the mission this time?" Polina asked, alarmingly stoic as always. Though, the others were used to it now. She either didn't care or she was pissed. Sometimes she would laugh at Wade or Lucas' dumb jokes, but usually she rolled her eyes, as, well, their jokes weren't that funny.
"Another search for Nazi Intel." Arthur waved it off, instead asking Polina how she had been.
Wade couldn't focus though, he felt they were being watched. He waited a few minutes before finally hushing the group and alerting them to this discrepancy.
"Watched from where?" Lucas asked, taking the hint not to look around for the culprit and give away that he had been spotted.
"I don't know, dipshit!" Wade snapped. "I just can't shake the feeling."
"And we're supposed to just trust your 'feeling'?" Lucas gave an unimpressed look, clearly not feeling the urgency anymore.
"I would trust his intuition, Lucas" Arthur warned. "Wade has very strong senses."
Wade simply nodded in reply, but looked panicked before anyone could continue.
"I heard a rifle bolt!"
"From wh-"
Before Polina could finish her question, she was shoved to the ground hard enough that she bounced as she landed on her side. Her pilotka fell beside her, crumpling and hiding the Arstotzkan badge on the front.
Wade dropped to the ground in her place, eyes slowly rolling to the back of his head.
One eye anyway. The other was missing along with half of his skull, where a high powered rifle had cut through him.
"For Kolechia!" A man yelled. The remaining three snapped their attention in the direction of the voice, only to see a short man dressed in red leap down from a tree and sprint in the opposite direction.
"NOOO!" Polina screamed, realizing that Wade had given his own life to protect her. She somehow felt guilty, as if she had been the one who sent a bullet tearing through his very being.
Quickly, she shot to her feet and sprinted after the man in red, whipping her own rifle around her shoulder and over her arm.
While still running, she took aim, carefully, and waited until the exact moment the man's leg was in her crosshairs before she pulled the trigger.
The man fell, screaming in pain at his mostly severed limb, grasping for his rifle that had been flung from his hands. Polina kicked it away.
"You fucking Kolechians. Always trying to fuck things up!" She spat.
"Now you kill an innocent man! How dare you drag other countries people into your own pathetic hatred! You and all your people can BURN IN HELL!"
She drove the butt of her rifle into his skull again and again, until she finally heard a satisfying crack and the man's body went limp.
She growled in frustration. Maybe she didn't like Wade much, but that didn't mean she wanted him dead. She actually quite liked having him around, even with his cocky attitude.
"Polina.." Arthur carefully approached her, placing a hand on her shoulder.
"I fucking hate Kolechians." She seethed through her clenched teeth.
She started to cry, for reasons even she didn't understand. Wade was annoying, yes, but he was a good man and a didn't deserve to die. Especially protecting her from a war he had no part in.
"I'LL KILL EVERY LAST ONE!" She screamed at nothing, driving the back of her rifle into the dirt.
Lucas joined Arthur in comforting the Arstotzkan, gingerly resting his own hand on her back.

Papers Please
I have never been morally challenged by anything besides this indie game called Papers Please.
I always seek balance in everything to the point that I understand where grumpy registrars are coming from. Basically, you are an immigration officer in a Soviet Union set-up — Yeah it definitely sounds like a simple concept not until you’re faced with different situations such as: the Government trying to deal with terrorists, secret organizations, smuggling, drugs, falsification of documents, media privilege pressure, people coming up with different alibis to get through and many more.
Papers Please has a unique personality on its own to the extent where you truly experience being a federal worker. A lot of people may find it boring due to its routinely play cycle which feels repetitive but as you progress each day, you are challenged to decide ethically or not. You conduct thorough examination of each immigrant’s documents and determine whether they will be approved for transit in the country. The set up is eerie in a way you feel compressed in a small space as a cog trying to survive and make the ends meet for your family.
It’s eerie to feel like how it treats you to become a cog but at the same time coerces you to become human with ethical judgement. There’s a gray line where you have the choice to disobey the rules and allow certain people pass due to their background or keep your job because rules are rules and if you don’t follow, your own family will suffer. Overall, the game itself is a memorable experience, and a core memory indeed.
Glory to Arstotzka!
