okk i was just wondering what's the difference between different ballet styles. i get the basics, but i don't get why balanchine is a style if george balanchine was a choreographer. in that case why isn't petipa or ashton considered a style?
I'll try to explain briefly.
Balanchine was indeed a choreographer with his own specific style. He founded SAB to train dancers in that style and NYCB was eventually established to showcase his choreographic works. The company does preform other choreographers now, but Balanchine remains the bread and butter of the company. The Balanchine style is defined by unique technical and choreographic approaches, institutionalized through specific training methods.
Petipa and Ashton were influential in shaping classical and British ballet, respectively, but their legacies are embedded in the broader traditions rather than as distinct "styles."
Ashton's style is nowhere near as codified or as widely taught as a specific training method. And while Petipa's works set the standard for classical ballet technique and structure, his influence is his works, rather than creating a separate style.

barre with me🩰✨💕
January 17, 2024
I can still remember the day I walked into my first ballet class.
I remember being the first one there. I remember walking into the studio and feeling awestruck. It was just like the ones on TV, all mirrors and wooden floors, and ballet barres wrapped around the whole room.
I remember running over to the barre and staring at myself in the mirror. Black leotard, pink tights, pink skirt, pink shoes, 4C hair pulled into a puffy bun because Mommy refused to use gel.
I remember Mommy and Professora talking in the corner. Professora was shocked at how early we were and Mommy explained that I didn’t like to be late. I don’t remember what they talked about after that, I was busy at the barre, holding my balance in what I would soon come to know as relevé but at the time was just my tippy-toes.
I remember them calling me over. Mommy and I followed Professora into a tiny storage room. Its walls were lined with shelves, the upper ones filled with boxes upon boxes of ballet shoes. The lower ones were for students to leave their bags.
I remember there being a swing set, playhouse, and a picnic bench outside. I remember sharing snacks and playing outside with the other girls.
The building is there, although it’s not a ballet studio anymore.
The playhouse is still there too.

I Elisabeth Beyer’s trajectory was purely a sign of the times. I also think people underestimate what second company positions can offer, somebody I knew often spoke about how that helped him transition other things in his life and let him settle into being more of a grown- up. And look at Beyer, somebody with it all going on who improved even further there and gained pas de deux experience
I'm not inherently against the concept of second companies, many students aren't ready to be full-fledged professionals right after graduating school, but the financial and lifestyle support offered at many of these positions is lacking at best, and non-existent at many companies. However with how under-compensated these positions are, the system does not allow most dancers to take full advantage of this opportunity for growth and maturity.
In some regional companies in the US, second-company members or apprentice members are paid as little as $100/ week. This is beyond negative money. Dancers who don't have financially established parents often have to work multiple jobs to support themselves. If you're working out or cross-training for an hour, dancing for 5-6, and then standing on your feet working for another 5-6...when does your body rest and recuperate? How much do you have to work just to make ends meet?
Furthermore, I'd argue that companies are often more interested in having 'cheap labour' to fill out the corps de ballet than actually establishing a universally fulfilling transitional program (except for the one or two they deem to be of real promise and are scared of losing to other companies).
I don't think Elisabeth Beyer was desperate for experience, she had extensive experience performing well under pressure at some of the most prestigious ballet competitions in the world. Ellison Ballet has a robust training program, one of the best in the country, and even has stand-alone pas de deux intensives. ABT stuco was far from the first time she did a pas de deux on stage. Someone like her honestly has a good argument for not being stuck in the studio company at all.
