Fashion is for all.
What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you think of haute couture? Is it the glamorous lifestyle, runways, famous designers or the intricate details of a garment?
The National Gallery of Victoria’s (NGV) Krystyna Campbell-Pretty Fashion Gift proves fashion has no age.

Originally collected by French fashion designer Dominique Sirop, the 1.4 million dollar collection has since been purchased and donated by Campbell-Pretty in honour of her late husband.
Located on the ground level of the NGV, the free exhibit can be viewed until the 14th of July between 10am and 5pm with guided tours daily. More information is available on the NGV website.
As guests move through the exhibition they experience French haute couture from the late nineteenth century to the twenty-first century.
It showcases fashion staples by legendary designers Alexander McQueen, Chanel, Dior, Balenciaga, Yves Saint Laurent and more.

It’s an event for all fashionistas, young children, older generations, those who regularly visit the gallery or people wanting to know more about the fashion industry. It brings the community together to share these timeless treasures.
Tomboy Alexandra says it was a great turn out with a variety of people who attended the gallery.
“There was a mix of people, you know parents with their children, people who knew a lot about fashion, those who like me are not au fait with it and are intrigued to learn more about Parisian style, and those who grew up in the eras of the older garments. It’s brought us together despite our differences in personal style and age,” she said.
The incorporation of child friendly information plaques, easy access to displays and a warm welcoming environment make this event such a success.
The vintage fashion journals Vogue and Bazaar as well as accessories, complement each garment adding another layer to their sophisticated presentation. These are displayed in an inclusive way to allow children and those in a wheelchair to view them easily.

As well as providing a stunning tribute to French fashion, the exhibition showcases each piece in their flawless condition. Visitors of all ages can appreciate the remarkable quality of each garment in their classic forms.

Fashion enthusiast Stella says it was pleasant to see the fashion she grew up wearing.
“I grew up wearing many of these styles, and it’s exciting to show my granddaughter what I used to wear. For some of these younger people, this could be the first time they’ve seen fashion like this. Even to me, it’s still amazing and the quality, today you can get a lot of clothes that just don’t have it,” she said.
It’s evident that many of these textiles and trends are making a comeback, or still remain relevant in today’s society such as puffy sleeves, metal detailing, fur coats, matching pant-suits, ravishing headpieces and satin gowns.
The Krystyna Campbell-Pretty fashion Gift shows the core of these iconic designers and their brands. It’s a collection to be seen, no need to book, just come along to the NGV and discover the wonderful world of Parisian haute couture.
