Bulbophyllum lobbii is an epiphytic orchid native to Southeast Asia, present in countries including India, Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia among others. The large (for a Bulbophyllum) pseudobulbs produce a single leaf and potentially one large flower. Though many Bulbophyllum are fragrant (usually stinky to attract pollinating flies) this species is considered by most to be pleasing. This Bulbo is pollinated by blowflies/bottleflies and he large central lip is hinged and wobbles with the slightest vibration, used in pollination to shove the unsuspecting bug against the column where it can receive or release pollen to the flower.

My plant / flora generator!
Plant / Flora generator ― Perchance
This started as a list of plants, and because I found myself coming back to the list to pick randomly I thought making it into a generator would be useful.
I thought it could be useful for writing, dnd, landmass creation, art ideas, etc.
It will be updating frequently with more and more plants! Currently I’m at 280/1000 plants I want to add to it.

I’m posting again because Mum’s Orchids are fully out. So pretty. Crimson Cattleya or Ruby-lipped Cattleya (cattleya labiata cultivar) originally from Brazil and Venezuela. It’s an easy to grow, Cattleya that, as you can see has lavish displays of flowers. This was Mum’s orchid and I will divide it again this year. I’m sure son and daughter will like a copy of Gran’s orchid. There are fancier varieties but this was Mum’s so it’s special to me. #flower #cattleya #orchid #crimsoncattleya #cattleyalabiata #brazil #abcmygarden #violet #ornamental #venezuela #epiphyte #green (at Belmont, New South Wales, Australia) https://www.instagram.com/p/CriCn4HPPPP/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

#1907 - Pyrrosia eleagnifolia - Leather-leaf Fern
Tumblr media
AKA ota in Māori.
Surprisingly, another fern. Doesn’t look much like one.
This species grows on trees and on the surface of rocks from the coasts to the mountains, and can survive dry conditions thanks to its thick fleshy undivided fronds and dense hair covering on the undersides. The fronds can vary widely in shape and appearance - such adaptability no doubt helps it survive.
Dry conditions probably aren’t that much of a problem around Huka Falls, although conditions would be a bit more unfavourable whenever the supervolcano under the nearby Lake Taupo erupts. It’s been the site of multiple gigantic eruptions over the last 25,600 years, including the largest recorded eruption on Earth in the last 70,000. The most recent eruption took place in 232 CE (± 5) and blew out over 100 cubic kilometers of rock, about one third of that in a few minutes. It would have certainly depopulated the North Island, had any humans lived there at the time - effects were noted in Rome and China.
At least six species of moth are known to feed on the fern, including the  leather-leaf star-miner Philocryptica polypodii (Tortricidae) and the leather-leaf spore-eater Calicotis crucifera, (Stathmopodidae).

A large heart hangs in netting below the skeleton of a mysterious creature in one of Joy Curtis’s sculptures for Night Hike and Ocean Grandma at Klaus von Nichtssagend Gallery.  As you walk around the sculptures you are invited to invent the story behind them. Titles like Ocean Grandma, Sympathetic/ Parasympathetic, and Future Organs, and Night Hike (Epiphytes) provide clues.
Throughout the run of the exhibition, performers activated several of the smaller wearable sculptures. These performances are currently on view on the  gallery’s website and Instagram.
From the press release-
Joy Curtis’s new show of immersive textile sculptures takes on a folkloric quality, addressing ideas of evolution, environmental history, continuity, and change. Curtis sculpts with fabrics dyed to align with multiple historical traditions. These soft materials are quilted and sewn onto wire armatures, assembled to imply animal and plant forms, yet veering into abstraction.
Roots, vertebrae, leaves, and organs drape from figurative or animaloid fabric structures, creating canopies with an ambiguous narrative. Curtis hand-dyes her cloth using techniques inspired by Nigerian (Yoruba) Adire and Japanese Shibori processes, employing natural hues such as amber, ochre, iron, and indigo. Some pieces incorporate synthetic elements, such as reflective discs sewn into the works, causing visual sparks or glimmers amidst the more subdued textiles. The mixture of materials creates rich textures, as well as both reflective and absorbent variations in the light.
Some sculptures are large and hang dramatically from the ceiling, allowing the viewer to walk underneath and between them. A series of smaller works hang on the walls, actively wearable as garments. When dressed on individuals, these sculptures transform the wearer into an extension of Curtis’s formal style.

Butterfly Amaryllis
Hippeastrum papilio, butterfly amaryllis is an uncommon and weirdly epiphytic amaryllis. It may not be as pretty as the countless more colorful hybrids of the genus, but it is more reliably perennial. All of the few specimens that I have observed within home gardens are potted or in the ground, either because they are easier to grow that way, or because those who grow them are not aware that they…
