#for just collecting phrases to use as titles (sometimes with specific ideas sometimes just vibes sometimes like oh i like that phrase)
Note
I have to ask about good dog bad dream <3
🥰🥰 oh i was HOPING for this one. ok so y’all may actually know a little bit already because it exists in the tags as tyler borzoituzzi but! good dog bad dream is the working document title/notes compilation for a fic that started with the premise of “well you see that’s actually not a dog that’s my blorbo from my hrpf shifter wolf au—”
and, because i have never formally addressed it or put it anywhere other than the tags, three important details about this fic:
this IS a semi-au fic about the detroit red wings, set vaguely in the 2018-19 season, because the wings sucked that year (but not as bad as 2019-20)
this is ALSO a fic that is mainly about tyler bertuzzi and dylan larkin, with some other wings thrown in because i've never met an ensemble i couldn't shove into a love story
this 100% exists because of mickey redmond calling tyler a junkyard dog every chance he gets and me every time going "okay but what if literally though" -> 🐺
#me 🤝 the detroit red wings hippo campus hive mind#liv in the replies#the way that this fic exists fully formed in my brain & i just need it!!! to come out as a narrative!!!#where is the brainworm to print fic button. where is it#also the way in which i’m just like ‘yeah the fic is tyler borzoituzzi’ ok but can we have a title please. like a real one.#because somehow out of 20 pages of bertuzzi-thesis-dog-related quotes i have not found a title. ???? help. i also have a whole titles note#for just collecting phrases to use as titles (sometimes with specific ideas sometimes just vibes sometimes like oh i like that phrase)#not to mention the fact that my quote doc for the bertuzzi thesis has a more embarrassing title but like it’s fine!!#UPDATE THE DOC HAS ACTUAL WRITING IN IT 🚨🚨 I REPEAT WE HAVE REAL NARRATIVE NOT TAG NOT!FIC#WE ARE AT A SOLID ALMOST 1K!!! THIS IS THANKS TO Y’ALL!!! don’t ask how long the document with notes is tho. also how many scenes are done 🙃#anyway i have had this reply written for like two days but keep not posting it because i wanted to be able to have something written to give#but also there’s another ask about good dog bad dream so this one will be info (boring) (sorry) and i will post a snippet in the next ask <3#me vs not wanting to spoil things vs literally the entire plot of this already written out in the tags: fight#tyler borzoituzzi#WAIT MY TAGS DIDN’T SAVE 😭😭😭#you’re missing the one of me going ‘🥺🥰☺️😭💕‼️🥹 thank you for the ask’#lmaooo tumblr out here like ‘bro you can’t do that every time someone sends an ask’ ok well watch me. what if i DO cherish every interaction#wip ask game

fya’m’ ’s name is derived from the first letter of each member’s first names. but because there was a dupe in the a and the m, they added the ’ behind the respective letters to indicate the duplication
check riruhapi’s post about the note on the schools

Coresawa Maito:
don’t ask me what a work-leader is because i don’t have a clue lol (the original japanese phrase used is actually “part-time job leader)
he is in class 2-1
his favourite food is dagashi (cheap japanese candies and snacks)
his hobby is making money (mood)
what he likes about a cappella: ...isn’t it just fun to do something like this with people? it gives you the vibe of being normal teenagers
others introduce him as the following:
the work-leader at his part-time job in a family restaurant
he wants to get the drivers license for his motorcycle
a word to his group members: “aoppella... if we’re doing this then we’re doing this to win.”
Ayase Mitsuo:
“little devil” is a japanese term used to describe a specific personality. the little devil personality is essentially someone who likes to tease others and toy with people’s hearts by seemingly giving them what they want but in reality, have no intention in doing so. they often like to act all cute to let people’s guard down in thinking that they’re of no harm.
“wicked-hearted” is translated from the japanese term 腹黒 (haraguro) which literally means “black belly.” basically, it’s someone who always likes to tease others and usually has an ulterior motive (usually to tease) when asking people to do something for them. haraguro can sometimes play hand-in-hand with sadism (not always) because the things haraguro people like to ask others to do are usually things against their wishes or things they don’t want to do (which in terms can make them suffer).
he is in class 1-3
his favourite food is skewered chicken (team salt without doubt) <- referring to the add-ons, usually it’s between sauce and salt
his hobby is photography (his dad is a photographer apparently)
what he likes about a cappella: it’s the best chance to appeal my cuteness to the world
others introduce him as the following:
a complete narcissist to the bone who has the world revolving around him
the other member who is responsible for arranging their songs
his emotions are more reliable than anybody else (i’m kind of confused myself on this line so don’t quote me)
a word to his group members: “do your best but only to the point where you won’t stand out more than me please~”
Shigaki Akira:
he is in class 1-4
his favourite food is anything that is recently popular between girls
his hobby is reading (especially romance novels targeted towards female readers)
what he like about a cappella: whenever i sing, all of the girls become super happy for me. but recently, i’m beginning to find joy in singing itself.
others introduce him as the following:
he disrupts the school discipline
super strong at social media (meaning he has a lot of followers)
he has way too many posts on social media that include girls
a word to his group members: “recently, singing with everybody has become so much fun. it may not be such a bad idea to seriously aim for aoppella, just kidding.” (he’s totally not kidding)
Soenji Asaharu:
asaharu’s name means “sunny morning” in japanese where sayo’s name means “rainy night.”
there’s a video posted on aoppella’s official yt channel that involves asaharu explaining the basics of a cappella and breaking down all of the parts.
he’s in class 2-2
his favourite food is traditional japanese meals (especially family dishes)
his hobby is walking his dog (a borzoi) and visiting dog parks on days off
what he likes about a cappella: he’s able to explore the deep topic of “using only voiced to charm people’s hearts” and thinks of a cappella as a deep and complicated subject
others introduce him as the following:
the student council president
the main music arranger for the group
can be very scary occasionally
a word to his group members: “they say that if you slack off even for a single day while doing arts that it will take 3 days to gain back the progress you have made. so, let us not slack off at our basic trainings.”
Nekoyashiki Yui:
yui’s surname, nekoyashiki (猫屋敷) literally means “a house for cats”
the student disciplinary committee is actually quite a common student body in japanese schools. the title sounds scary because i legit couldn’t find any other translation for it but basically what they do is make sure students follow the school rules and code.
he is in class 2-2
his favourite food is onigiri (especially the ones his grandma make)
his hobby is paper craft and watching history dramas (from tv to stage shows, he is a total history nerd) (also i’m pretty sure history drama in this context refers to the samurai and sengoku era shows based on yui’s personality)
what he likes about a cappella: a way to improve one self and to sharpen his skills alongside his friends to create high quality performances
others introduce him as the following:
a grandpa and grandma’s boy
super straight-laced samurai
has a surprisingly cute hobby
a word to his group members: “i don’t work well with half-assed people so give nothing but your best from now on too.”
Shinkai Fukami:
the name “fukami” can be interpreted as “a deep person” (referring to personality) or even translated to “a deep sea.” this is interesting because fukami’s surname, “shinkai” (深海) literally means “a deep sea” in kanji.
total side note but when translations fukami’s profile, i totally got hisoka vibes from him, please tell me i’m not the only one.
he is in class 2-3
his favourite food is chicken
his hobbies are muscle training, jogging, and collecting panda goods
what he likes about a cappella: the atmosphere when singing
others introduce him as the following:
mystery boy
a hidden high-spec (means that he’s secretly very capable and skilled)
the amount of panda stuff he has increased recently
a word to his group members: “thank you for singing with me.”

How do you come up with some of the best titles for your stories and also what is your short story writing process? You are amazing and all your works are *chef's kiss* <3..
anon oml!! you’re so sweet, i’m so glad you like my writing + my story titles; they’re usually a struggle™ to pin down so this means a lot. i’ve answered your other question [my short story process] in an upcoming ask, so here’s the gist of how i title things. i'll be exampling this with the process of me naming my short stories it’s gene magic and/or turpentine and geometry of the holy moon (1 am) to make the process clearer. [i’ll be referring to them as gene magic and gothm respectively]
1. figure out the key emotion/aesthetic of the story. this refers to how you perceive the story. it works if you’ve already got the vibes pinned down. so for example, if it's an airy, dreamy story that’s set in the hills, you can pick a lexicon that fits that: grass, air, gauze, wind, bloom, blah blah. for gothm, the vibe was that of nighttime [midnight specifically], the full moon in a cloudless sky, a small village, a very thick and dreamy air which was slightly suffocating, etc. this is where the words ”moon” and 1 am” came through. for gene magic, the word ”turpentine” fits the story as it’s a sharp and bitter aesthetic and turpentine is a pungent smell.
2. allude it to the theme(s). okay so this one doesn't always need to happen because sometimes you don't have a theme / don't know it. but basically, referencing theme [not overtly] in the titles helps add some depth! for gothm, there are themes of religion and faith, and that’s where the word ”holy” comes in. i added this descriptor to the previously chosen moon aesthetic, and so it helps [and it alludes to the story too because in it a god lives on the moon]. for gene magic, the phrase ”it’s gene magic” alludes to the story as the plot has surrealist / fabulist elements and there’s a magical disease running in the family.
3. maintain a lexicon. this brings in both the previous points: maintain a set of words that fit the story as a whole. so this is kind of like a word bank for your story specifically. for gothm, the word bank had ”moonlight, weave, water, reflection, velvet, interval, liminality, silence.” this gives you a general vibe for the story and are used to embellish the aesthetic. i usually do this at the start of the story and then add onto it as i write. so you can use this word bank to pick out the title! for gene magic, it originally had a different title which i’d used at first but by the end of the draft it didn't fit the story at all. so in looking for a new one i referred to the lexicon, where the term ”turpentine smoke” once appears, and this helped the new title click and fit.
4. maintain a general ideas list. this one. this is a LIFESAVER. i’d recommend keeping an ideas list for everything [plot, character, tropes, titles, themes, etc.] but for titles, this helps infinitely. basically just jot down every word you find interesting [this list would not have to be for the aesthetic of the story because it’s a general list]. so any word you come across that intrigues you, or random phrases you find cool. just plop them all into this one document. and in case you want a title for a future story you can always reference this collection of super assorted words and title ideas and pick out ones that sound right for your story. for gothm, the phrase ”geometry of the” came from my general ideas list, where i’d written down the word ”geometry” for later use. this always helps me because i’d done the same thing for gene magic where the word turpentine had been on the list. like i said, this is a lifesaver.
5. trial & error. this one’s something that happens for some stories and doesn't for the rest.
for gene magic, before starting to draft it, i had a vague idea of the aesthetic and referenced my general ideas list for a working title [it’s impossible for me to work on a story if i don’t have a title] and found the term ”elbow grease”, and because i knew this would be a super weird and funky story, the working title was ”elbow grease works for shoulders too”. [yes i know that does not make sense, that does not mean i’m not going to use it for a future title lmao]. i drafted this story and by the end knew that the title and the story had literally nothing in common. and then while actively hunting for a new title i came across the phrase ”turpentine” in my ideas list and the title ”it’s gene magic and/or turpentine” immediately came to mind. as before, i wanted to allude to the funky / weird vibe of the story and thus i use the phrase ”and/or”, which tbf is pretty unusual.
for gothm, i’d gotten the general vibes down, but had a bunch of very similar titles that differed only in the phrasing: ”anatomy of the full moon”, ”geometry in moonlight (1 am)”, ”geometry 101: the shape of moonlight”, ”geometry in moonlight, is it holy enough?” etc etc. none of these sounded exactly right, so instead i picked specific words i liked and put it into one title.
6. don’t overthink it. look, it’s easy to get carried away with super deep and poetic and really complicated titles [i would know]. but sometimes a simple, short title is truly the best. for my short story ”saltwater”, there would be no other title that fit it better. it gets across the vibe of the story, the key character [the ocean] and how it plays into the plot. sometimes the simplest title is the best one.
for me the titling process, like everything else, is something that’s instinctive and intuitive. it’s mostly trial and error + just bouncing ideas back and forth until something clicks. sometimes the first title will stick, or it might need a complete revamp by the end. it can take a while to get to the right title, but it’s worth it. hopefully insight into my process was able to help in some way, best of luck with your stories!!

Got tagged by @grapefruitsketches Thank you! :D
My AO3 is FixaIdea
Fandoms
I’m currently mostly writing for Tian Guan Ci Fu and Mo Dao Zu Shi, but I also have a lot of fic for Maurice and Les Misérables, and a scattered handful of Star Wars and Discworld ones.
Where You Post
Anything resembling a structured story, short or not, goes on AO3, random ramblings, ideas and headcanons on Tumblr.
Most Popular Oneshot
Listed by kudos, it’s an old, old Les Mis fic, In retrospect. ...I mean it’s one of my only Modern AU E/R fics, so there’s that. I’m not gonna disown the idea, but the prose could use a do-over.
Most Popular Multichap
My Discworld/MDZS crossover, Of Hats and Flutes by far. Honestly I thought this was gonna be such a nieche premise, I never expected it to take off, but I’m glad it did.
Favourite Story You’ve Written So Far
It’s gonna sound conceited, but I have a lot of faves - not because they are such masterpieces, but because I’m the only one who knows MY OWN specific tastes and can 100% cater to them.
That said, I’m pretty proud of Zona. It’s a multi-chapter Star Wars/MDZS crossover. Longfic is something I struggle with, but I think this one turned out nicely.
Fic You Were Nervous to Post
Refuge. Boy, was I nervous about this one... It’s a ridiculously self-indulgent miniseries about Hua Cheng and Xie Lian... And sure, there’s no actual smut in it, but it’s still the most intimate (and kinda personal) thing I’ve ever written.
How Your Choose Your Titles
Just before hitting Submit, while crying. Usually it ends up being a very simple phrase that kinda sums up the vibe (or a very simple phrase in Latin or French to give a false impression of sophistication).
Do You Outline
Outlining sounds too sophisticated and too much like I knew what I was doing compared to what’s actually happening.
I kinda... jot down plot points in a spaced-out list, sometimes including phrases I want a character to say, and I come back to expand on whichever segment feels the most inspiring at the moment and then Frankeinstein the whole thing together. The only times I don’t do this is if a fic is shorter than 1000 words and I push the whole thing out in one sitting.
Complete
Almost everything I currently have on AO3.
In Progress
Of Hats and Flutes and Refuge are both collections of self-contained short stories so they can be considered complete, but I think of them as open-ended. Other than that, there’s still a multi-chapter Les Mis fic that lacs an epilogue, and two that died before I managed to get to the point, and am now too lazy to re-visit.
Coming Soon / Not Yet Started
I want to write more in the TGCF canon divergence universe where The Dancer takes place, and I want to finally do something coherent about that MDZS AU where Xiao Xingchen lives and gets to start that sect he dreamed about.
Prompts?
Yes please! I can’t promise for sure that I will answer everything I get - please don’t take that personally, I still love getting them and do my best to fill them! I just... don’t always get around to doing it.
Upcoming Work You’re Most Excited About
The prequel to The Dancer, in which Hua Cheng finds Xie Lian before his third ascension. Or rather, Xie Lian finds him.
Tagging
If you feel like doing it - @eirenical @docmanda
