Decorative Sunday
This Sunday we are showcasing several plates from publisher Hans Carl Perleberg’s Modern Fabrics, Series II, a collection of 50 plates issued in a portfolio in 1917 in Jersey City. Perleberg operated out of Philadelphia, Jersey City, and New York City, and was active during the first half of the 20th century. He published primarily textile and architectural portfolios, including American Indian Designs, Peruvian Textiles, Persian Textiles, Old Scandinavian Homes, and Sixty Photographs from Old Hollandish Interiors.
Our copy was originally part of the Albert F. Gallun Collection at the Layton School of Art (1920-1974). The Layton School of Art was revolutionary for being the first art school to require a year of foundational studies before allowing students to specialize and was one of the first to hold co-ed figure drawing classes. The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee acquired the Gallun collection after the Layton closed in 1974, and in that same year seven former faculty members of the Layton School co-founded the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design (MIAD). Today, UWM Special Collections continues to serve as an important resource for the students, faculty, and staff at MIAD.
Check out more of our posts on Decorative Plates here.
