So its been almost a week since I asked one of my coworkers (almost 70) if he's ever seen Goncharov when we were talking about movies I've never seen. I even gave him a sticky note with the movie title, director, year of release, and the starring actors before I went home.
I asked him today if he's seen it yet and answers "No but I was looking at the note you gave me and it sounds familiar so I might have and not remember since I've seen so many movies. It has all these big names and sounds good!
See I even put your note right here on my folder to remind me when I got some free time!"
He sounded so excited to watch it, I don't know how to tell him.

You really think "Goomcharov" is the greatest film of all time? Sounds like someone hasn't seen The Golettfather.
@drifting-rocket
OKAY LOOK, FIRST OF ALL YOU'RE WRONG. Second of all, I have seen The Golettfather, and it's a good movie! But it's missing Matteo JWHJ0715's unique genius.
Tumblr media
The shot composition in even the most basic scenes is masterful! This is a super basic shot-reverse-shot conversation that Goncharov is having with Andrey, and they could be forgiven for not having his partner Goomy in the shot at all! Wrangling Goomies is a fucking nightmare!
But Matteo positioned it in the background in a very specific way- it's between Goncharov and the rest of the world. Training Pokemon is the one tie that Goncharov has to a normal life, and so every time Goomy's in the shot in Act 1, it's between Gonch and some extras.
Meanwhile, Andrey's never, ever, ever got his partner Pokemon out unless they're battling-- look at this shot from the same scene.
Tumblr media
Because Andrey doesn't have any strong connections to anyone but Goncharov! (And you can put your GonchRey glasses on here if you want.) He doesn't bond with people or Pokemon, all he's got is this fanatic devotion!
Scoresce's a hell of a good director but he just doesn't do this kind of symbolism with characters' Pokemon. They're in scenes where they battle and they're not there when they don't need to be, because directing Pokemon is a nightmare.
But Matteo JWHJ0715 does. It's because he's the son of a Pokemon professor, I'd bet you my left leg.

you were in a new york times article about a tumblr meme????
how did this happen
DGhjkdsghkjsdghkjhsdkjghkjsdghkj So
Back in those several days when the entirety of tumblr was going apeshit over Goncharov, I made a post about it, and how I appreciated that people were so willing to let others in on the joke rather than making 'mock people for never having seen the nonexistent film' part of the punchline.
And someone at the NYT was doing an article about the Goncharov/gonchposting phenomenon, and she saw my post and thought that what I had to say was interesting so we did a short phone interview and next thing I knew I was quoted in a NYT article.
Someone even recognized my name from the article IRL at my end of semester exhibition last year it was buckwild.

I keep reading Goncharov posts and sharing them with my friends
And they absolutely hate it. They can not stand it, and this brings me joy. I encourage all of you to gonchpost irl.

So who here is excited for the 50th anniversary DVD release of Goomcharov?
When they said it was the greatest Evil Team movie ever made, they weren't kidding. There's no greater tragedy in cinema than the war between Team Scarlet and Team Snow.
And they somehow pulled it off Despite Goncharov's battling team being a Goomy, a Garbodor, and a Dialga (that was just a Gardevoir in facepaint). HOW.
(Also the boat scene where Katya's Magikarp evolves into Gyarados? CLASSIC.)
