Lady and her calf, Derby, circa 1998 🐄
Went down a rabbithole reading about Enderby Island cattle earlier so..... This is currently the rarest breed in the world flat out- with only ~27 existing as of 2019 (Supposedly, since it's a little hard to find any info on these guys)
Enderby island cattle existed in the mid 90's as an isolated herd living on Enderby island, off the coast of NZ. They were culled down from a herd of about 50 (to conserve native flora) until Lady was the only one left from the original herd-- after which she was transported to mainland New Zealand and artificially inseminated to produce Derby.
After this a handful of enderby cattle were cloned to bring the population up to ~27, with ongoing conservation efforts. The most recent reference I can find to an extant population is from an NZ Journal of Ecology article published in 2022 so. Make of that what you will 👍

Is this "the first human-made textbook"?
Huge drawings of touchable animal tracks would be an ideal teaching tool for young hunters & trackers. These rock carvings in Namibia are hard to date, but the paper estimates they are at least 5000 to 7000 years old.
The authors of the paper sought out the assistance of local hunter and trackers to better identify the animals represented in the rock art. The range of species identified and the specificity of the depicted species was remarkable, showing the detail and depth of human knowledge of the natural world even thousands of years ago. (The trackers could tell the age and sex of many of the animals represented by the prints.)
Some of the carvings are in a narrow crevice, almost like it was a "test" where the student could move through the prints identifying them by touch. (that's just my guess for how they used it, the authors of the paper are more circumspect in their ideas about what this was for)
Some of the prints are from animals who no longer live in the region, possibly pushing the age of the site deeper into the past.

My Embarrassing Habits: Early Charlie & Vaggie
Charlie: (sitting on the bed in her pajamas with her foot crossed onto her opposite knee)
Charlie: (glances at the door before quickly pulling a fine toothed comb, hoof care kit, and rag out of her bedside drawer) Alright, it's time!
Charlie: (wedges the towel between the toes of her hooves and starts flossing the trapped dirt, lint, and miscellaneous debris out of the crevice)
Charlie: (sighing) Oooooh, yeah. That feels good.
-CREEEEAAAAAAK!!!-
Charlie: (freezes and face falls as she stares at the bedroom door)
Vaggie: (eyes wide as she stares at Charlie's hoof and the small pile of fur, dirt, lint, etc. on the floor)
Charlie: (blushes hotly in embarrassment) It's not what it looks like!!!!
Vaggie: You have hooves?
Charlie: (curls in on herself and tries to tuck her hooves under her thighs) Y-Yeah....
Vaggie: (soft hum of a chuckle) They're adorable.
Charlie: (sits up straight as little hearts float and pop next to her head) Really? You think so?
Vaggie: I mean. I was thrown off at first, but yeah. They're cute. (Glances at the rag still wedged between Charlie's toes and the fine toothed comb in her hand) Do you... want some help with that?
Charlie: (hooves flex and curl) I wouldn't mind... ONLY IF YOU WANT TO!!!
Vaggie: I wouldn't have offered if I wasn't okay with helping, hun. Give me the comb.
Charlie: (brain fried as the word hun plays in her head on repeat) Y-Y-Yeah... sure... here you go.

So I was lookin up what deer feet look like and they're like actually really cute? Really scrunkly? No wonder Alastor wears shoes, he can't be caught with those sticky little legs and baby hooves out.
And since the part between the hoof and dew claw never touches the ground, it's probably one of his tickle death spots. He does not pass go. He does not collect $200. He goes straight to tickle hell.
And even though Vox said they're stinky, he probably takes extremely good care of them. Maybe takes them to the hoof spa to get sharpened and painted. Not that anyone will look at them, but just for the sake of his own vanity.
