I love your art sm!! Can I ask what brushes you use?

hai ! thank you! and also thank you for asking. I kinda hop between several programs, so grouped these brushes in regards to the rendering style :)

CLIP STUDIO PAINT: I usually stick to the default lighter and rough pencil .. but lately i have been using the Kasuy brush pack, which is only available for clip.. supah fun textures, loove it!

DRAWPILE: kinda unconventional but i looove the way the brushes feel in drawpile.. I even made a pseudo-dupe in CSP . but i enjoy the crunchy, compressed textured.... also working in a limited program .. helps me get into a flooww state.. nothing is ever too serious... lool

MSPAINT: pretty simple but all my binary brush looking work is done in mspaint, using the single or 3 px pencil. also the marker brush ! same as drawpile.. sometimes drawing in a simpler program really gets u outta the confines of expectation ... a lot of my favourite pieces came from doodling here :)

Hey! I looove your art style!! It's just so full of textures! (It remind me of drawings made with colored wooden pencils!!) Can I ask if you do your colors on the same layer as your lineart? Or if the lineart is just a refined sketch? I myself struggle because I always put my lineart on a separated layer on top of everything and I never like it! I feel like it doesnt blend well with the rest, so I'd love to know if you have tips!

Thank you so much for your kind words! sometimes I draw everything on one layer, but usually I do have a lineart layer but I do not line everything, I create a layer on top of the lineart and add all the details I want :) I found some wips as an example! So the first step is to line/clear(??) sketch, then I just paint on top of that layer! Sorry if my explanation is messy but I hope it helps!

ㅤㅤcalls you at a sensible hour if you haven’t agreed on a specific time. he knows your schedule by heart so don’t worry because he won’t bother you in the middle of work, etc. if you do have a call schedule, then he’ll make sure to call at exactly that time. can be very punctual about this and will start seeing everyone as bowling pins once he realizes he’s gonna be a minute late. they don’t call him a STRIKEr for nothing. will listen and rant equally! he always has interesting stories; wbk being in a call with isagi is never boring. also expect his teammates popping up in the background because of course they want to bonk him in the head after running them over know the person who can temporarily turn him into chigiri. ah yes, the furious yelling ambient noise, a classic. “isagi yoichi istg—” “get your ass back in here wtf was that about?!” “you have a competition, princess.” “EVERYONE STFU!!!” never fails to make you giggle. bonus: screenshots you laughing because he adores you sm <3

⚘ ITOSHI RIN

ㅤㅤhe has a routine and you’re in it: three times a day; square meal style. his early calls are short and mostly consist of “good morning”, “have you had breakfast yet”, and “take care”; (borrowing his word) lukewarm shit like that. i love you. even though he usually prefaces his afternoon/evening calls with “i pressed it on accident” (back to back for months straight? yea sure), it’s clearly an excuse because he just wants to hear your voice but his pride isn’t letting him. i love you. it has also recently been brought up to his attention that he can’t seem to sleep peacefully without hearing your voice first. so tell him something, anything, or don’t. he’ll settle with just the comfortable silence after a “hello”. it’s also the only time of the day he’ll say it loud and clear: “i love you”.

⚘ NAGI SEISHIRO

ㅤㅤwhat’s a timezone? it can be in the middle of the day after practice or he can randomly hit you up at 2am after losing yet another round of game. acts out of impulse: when he misses you that’s when he calls you. it’s mostly video calls too! props up his phone so you can see choki his beloved but gets so pouty when you open up the conversation with “how’s choki?” before he can even show you the cactus lmao. “y’re supposed to be asking about me ( ´•︵•` )” he loooves long calls too (re: letting you watch him play without him saying a word whatsoever and no he did not lose track of time + the game after dedicating his next win to you?). is absolutely against ending it unless you really need to go. rip your phone battery.

⚘ BACHIRA MEGURU

ㅤㅤyou’re like an emergency call button but for whenever there’s something crazy going on. his living diary. a breathing, talking, and confused log entry. that being said, he contacts you at least once a day without a fail. well, that’s actually an understatement because he keeps calling then hanging up after telling you one (1) sentence?? “chigiri just ran me over; ok bye!” “my mom painted something inspired by you; later!” “rin-chan just said we’re all lukewarm, boo— ow, ouch!” gotta rely on his teammates to inform you about his well-being because calling him back is no use. “meguru?” “[unintelligible] [intense fighting ensues]” it’s fine, he makes up for it by showing up at your door later in the day. you think it’ll be funny if you close the door as soon as he finishes a sentence? “hi!!” [door closing] “h-wha- you won’t believe what happened today—” [door closing #2] “?? ok so it wasn’t chigiri who ran me over but isag—” imagine doing this after every sentence to teach him a lesson lmfao.

⚘ ITOSHI SAE

ㅤㅤhonestly? in the middle of a fucking interview because man is so unhinged i tell you. “so sae, are you ready for the next match?” ugh, this is so boring. “wait let me ask my s/o.” ??? this is broadcasted live, btw. you think just because he has a tight schedule and it’s nearly impossible to have a free time he won’t call you? he’ll find a way, he always does. likes to call you at the end of the day too and will never lose to the “who can stay awake the longest” game. is more of a listener than a talker, so go ahead and talk his ears off. he doesn’t mind if it’s you + he loves being the last one to end the call, making sure you get some rest (ps: he’s counting on you to wake him up the next day). you’ll receive a call from his manager in the morning saying that he won’t answer his phone and that they’re gonna be late for the next event. “goddamnit sae, not again.”

I don't want people to reblog that AI art post so I'll put my addition here:

One thing that will always make me cringe with those AI imitations of middle to late 19th century art is how the intelligence will always try to match ALL the women figures with the current 21th century beauty standards. Now, of course, I wouldn't be complaining if these kind of images weren't plaguing the "classical art" or "oil painting" tags. But since they are, I will show you what 19th century painting of women really looks like. And yeah, I know, some paintings match with current beauty standards but it's still more complicated than that. "Classic" painting is not all about representing pretty ladies. Otherwise historians of art would be bored.

Okay, if it's a "classic" painting, let's go with neoclassicism which is basically a return to the classic inspirations from antiquity and a return to simplicity after years of the wild Baroque and Rococo of the 18th century. Want to see portraits of women in that time?

So far, notice how these two women don't look at all like the women in those fake AI paintings. They are portraits of real women, thus real models. But even when they were painting gods, 19th century painters HAD models! Not only that, they were also inspired by antiquity, which wasn't really doing realism either, they had their own ideals like, to cite one exemple, the really straight noses you always see in greek statues. Well, that's also in neoclassical paintings! Look:

On the other side, you've got two strong opponents (and logical responding movements) to this return to classical culture : Romantism and Realism. Once again, look at the diversity :

Realism is pretty self-explanatory. The painters were going back to show normal people, farmers and workers. They weren't here to make them beautiful or to conform to beauty standards but to show the world as it is. Result was a lot of controversies, notably with Courbet and Les baigneuses, a representation of a strong woman in an unflatering pose and dirt on her feet that shook the beauty standards so dear to the academic ideals of his times. Check it out if you're interested, there's plenty of articles about it. And romanticism? Once again very diverse. Just look at pre-romantism, with Goya, who loooved representing fucked up little scenes. Or with Delacroix, here with one of his most famous portrait (Jeune orpheline au cimetière) probably because of the expression, the pose, everything that makes that girl look alive, real, unique.

But wait.... You've already seen classical paintings were the ladies looked like all the ladies nowadays, right? Maybe you've seen those very pretty pre raphaelites paintings with those women that look kinda like Florence Welch. Maybe you've seen academic art, the most palatable of 19th century style when it comes to beauty norms. And it's true, it could be similar to these prompted AI classical babes, except once again, it's not. Because once again, they had models, and models were different from paintings to paintings. And this is this systematic same face vibes that makes AI so boring. Because even when real historical art comes close to that, it is always way way way more rich and full of surprises.

Then, you have all these art styles that AI weirdly stays away from : those where the style and process is so strong, so much more important than the subject, that it would be hard to copy without noticing the difference. It could be impressionism, it could be symbolism or better, it could be the avant-garde artists that announces then blends into the wild, colorful and tortured art of the first half of the 20th century.

Conclusion/ TLDR : If fake historical AI art becomes more realistic every day, it will never be as rich and diverse as the real deal because it will always be used to appease an algorithm for people who just want to see pretty images that catters to them and never challenge their views. When it comes to beauty norm, this could be dangerous and make people believe that these was always how women looked like. That all girls were born with removed buccal fat and symmetrical faces, even in old paintings. I don't know, it may be nothing, but it may be something. Thank you for those who read all that and I hope see many cool paintings in museums :)

Addition: This is of course a very european centric vision of art but it's what the AI will take inspiration from anyway. For the same reasons, these paintings are very white but I was also trying to avoid the icky orientalist representations that were so trendy in the 19th century. Note that there is an even better diversity in paintings when you open your eyes to non-european centric art.

i've seen some of your traditional stuff and wanted to ask what pens/pencils you use to sketch?? and have you ever tried coloring/making finished illustrations traditionally?

i'm a traditional artist (i just fill sketchbooks and never make anything finished) and everytime i see tutorials for comicbook/misprint/vintage-y art it's always digital (probably because of the aging and editing possibilities). so I'm curious if you've ever tried it (or if it's even possible lol)

I do make lots of traditional art, and I looove working with ink. I gravitate towards Pilot fine points and Speedball for making comics, but really just experimenting with different ones on different media is the best :]

And it is totally possible to make hand-drawn misprints! Once you got your linework, get yourself some alcohol markers (preferably in cmyk colors) and lay them down individually in layers, staggering each color to one side/outside the lines a little! Also tracing over your lines with a different color pen gives you a chromatic aberration appearance, too!

Also, even if you do a little ink wash/water color over your work, it can really make it pop! You can even add "stains" to the art that way...

Also, lastly, solid blocks of color and linework over it reflecta the UPA style, which is SUPER fun to do with paint and pens!

So there's tons of ways to get your traditional art to look vintage :D I'm glad you asked, thank you!

Just listened to Monica Gleberman's latest podcast with S. Twice. I can only urge you to do the same: it's 19 minutes long and well.. I'd just love to read your thoughts on it. By the way, I had no idea the woman even existed (happens a lot in SC world, at least to me) before she chimed in with indignation, you know... the Palestine Letter, and such.

But first, my short assessment, of course. By the way, this was recorded, I think, on November 1st, based on this X post:

OK, I honestly think her voice and her completely clueless, torrential debit are totally meh, but maybe that's just me. She made me think of one of those Tupperware representatives, always eager (hungry?) to sell something to you and do it quick, drug-dealer style. Some in Mordor thought she was drunk on the job (a half-emptied bottle of SS Gin was emphatically mentioned at least twice during the interview) - as usually, no humor and nasty.

I just think she was just acting too cool for school and #silly, with a severe case of ovaries going...

... on top.

Straight off the bat, the OTT praise is on steroids: how amazing S is, how he never changed, 'same sweetest person and like an amazing human being and friend to talk to and I just love you'. Kill me now, but that was unnecessary - yet still useful, since it prompted this answer (02:54):

'Well, that's very kind of you to say, but I think that's not true...I think there's...there's a lot of smoke and mirrors, this is ALL fake, um...underneath, there's a completely different human being. I have a double, actually. I AM the double. Um.. no, it's been a great journey, I'm very lucky and yeah, it's [OL] given me a lot of opportunities, as well (...).'

Translation: I am joking, but not even joking, if you see what I mean.

You'd think that was casual banter? You might want to think twice. Like all Taureans, bless their heart, S always almost heavily insists, when he wants to make sure the message gets across (07:12):

MG: ' Soooo, I don't know what's true, what's not true, but I'm just gonna assume that, you know, you looove watercolor. So, what is your favorite watercolor painting to make?'

Huh? Did I get that right? The answer does not match the clumsy question. At all. But see/hear for yourself:

S:' Err, you know what, I mean, I actually do, I actually have a couple paintings.. um.. from a..an artist called James Morrison, he was a Scottish artist.. he.. he actually painted a lot around Scotland, but he also painted up in the Arctic... the Arctic Circle... I'm kind of obsessed with him, so yes, this actually,,, this is truth...damn, I didn't know you'd actually put truths in here, but, you know...'

MG: ' OK, so we're already breaking barriers, right? Like revealing secrets so that is... that is... true.'

I shall not comment this. I do not think it needs any translation, to be honest.

The 'illiterate' S is, apparently, a keen art connoisseur and how could it be otherwise, if you only think of his mum? And Morrison is not just your average Scottish watercolorist. If you care to check his Wikipedia page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Morrison_(artist), you'll find interesting things, like:

His works can fetch at auction (here at Christie's in 2006), around...

... and the recent (conservative) estimates are stable. You can check them here: https://www.invaluable.com/artist/morrison-james-1932-9fybkaiqbc/sold-at-auction-prices/. A very good investment, on a volatile, whimsical market (I know very well what I am talking about).

Surely enough, some of you will just hear that horrendous cackle and the flirt fest that totally goes south by the end of the podcast. But maybe - just maybe - if you listen a bit more carefully, you'd have a rare peek behind that damn mask.

Can we please get more Julian and Harry content they are too cute

i looove them!! h obviously doesn’t have favorites, but i think he has a unique relationship with each of his kids, so here is a little bit about harry and jules

Julian is the only boy in the Styles clan, but he is definitely the most sensitive. For the first few years, he definitely crawls into Y/n and Harry's bed in the middle of the night, even though Harry already chased all the monsters out from under his bed.

The first time Jules goes to swimming lessons, he's terrified. He cries and kicks and refuses to get in the pool until Harry gets in with him to show him it’s not so bad; he even manages to get a floaty on so he and Julian can match.

Harry and Julian definitely go on father-son dates where they get lunch and get their nails done.

The first time Harry introduces Julian to his band (his live on tour band), Jules is super shy and hides behind his dad's leg or curls into his neck if he's being held. But when Harry sits him on his lap and helps him play the guitar, Jules gets more. comfortable, and Harry is super proud to see his little bubbie enjoying music and being less shy.

One time when Harry is in the dog house, he dresses Jules up in a tux and sends his son to Y/n with a heartfelt apology. When Harry finally makes an appearance, he asks Jules, “How did we do?” and Julian gives him a little thumbs up

Julian loves his Uncle Louis.

The first time Harry holds Julian after he's born, he cries. Considering his track record so far, he was convinced he would only have daughters, and to be honest he was a little nervous about raising a boy, but everything falls into place when he sees Julian’s little face for the first time.

Harry is constantly buying matching tour outfits for Julian.

One time, Julian wants to perform with Harry at his school’s talent show. Obviously they can’t risk exposing the family, but this is like the first time Julian wants to do something like this, so Harry invites close friends and family and they have a little Styles Family talent show where he and Jules can perform a little duet.

I feel like Julian loves dogs. He loves seeing them on the street and on TV, and there's definitely a time where he pretends to be a dog for a while. Like he sticks his tongue out and barks instead of talks. Harry totally leans into it to humor Jules, and one day Y/n comes home and sees the two of them crawling around on the floor and she's just like, wtf. Paw Patrol and Bluey are also popular in the Styles residence.

Before he leaves for tour, Harry always tells Julian, “You take care of Mama and your sisters, alright?” Julian is always really emotional when Harry has to leave, so Harry tries to give him a little pep talk and tells him to be a strong, brave boy for him.

When Jules is really little, Harry was gone a lot, and one time when he came back, Julian cried when Harry tried to hold him. It absolutely wrecked Harry. He can’t stand the idea of his son not recognizing his touch, and he beats himself up about it for a while.

Julian refuses to get his haircut because he wants to look like Harry after seeing some older pictures of Harry with his long hair. Y/n and Harry try to get him in a chair a couple times to get it cut, but eventually they just give up

There are tons of pictures in the house of Harry and Y/n with the kids. The one of Harry and Julian is definitely something like this.

Harry and Julian paint the nursery for Geneva and Natalia together. They both rock the jeans, no shirt, and backwards cap look. Julian wears a mask so he doesn't inhale the fumes, and Harry puts Jules on his shoulders to reach the higher parts. Unbeknownst to Harry, Y/n takes a picture of them and sends it to Zayn, who Harry doesn't really speak to anymore, but she makes it a point to check in every now and again (esp when she finds out he's having a baby). One day a package comes in the mail addressed to Julian, and it's a graffiti art of his name with a little more from “Uncle Z.” Harry’s confused, but when he asks Y/n about it, she acts surprised and says she didn’t know anything about it.

Harry and Julian are just best buds, and H loves his sweet boy so much🥹🥹

Yue Qingyuan said, “Maybe I like the mauling.” He loosened his collar, tapping a purpling bite mark on his neck to the hoots of some tipsy guests. “A creditor will demand interest at some point.” He downed his drink and placed the cup on the table, a gentle smile playing on his lips.

They also love taking you to little events when they find one

Arty 💖 I have a question inspired by another reader who asked about oc's fashion style... I'm curious about like, how oc's personal style affected their shared apartment? Like, did oc introduce more plants into the space, or certain type of photos/art up, or specific kitchen stuff (I went through a phase of buying cartoon-character egg timers which my bf at the time humoured me for 🙈) Love you!

THIS IS SUCH A GOOD QUESTION!! as i mention a balcony every now and then that’s where oc does take care of plants 🥹 trying to grow some herbs too and been failing half the time lol. + books and plushies everywhere <3 like joon has a shelf but he also got books piled up on the floor… yeah… (they may or may not be obsessed with sonny angels too currently… spoiler: they are) as yk oc is not very fond of cooking buuut they do love mixing drinks 🤭 so expect to see those colorful ice trays with different shapes when u open the freezer. swears chocolate milk tastes better with star-shaped blocks of ice. brown > black. loooves handmade things :( handmade&painted plates/mugs/cups. handwoven coasters. crocheted rugs then lil baskets for their change, keys, sewing kit, and such. says shit like “according to studies, green is shown to increase complex thinking and creativity and-” when persuading jungkook to let them choose the color when they need to buy stuff for the house and succeeds 😭 ok i’ll stop rambling here i got a class 😥 hehe hope i answered ur question right !! anw more stuff will be mentioned in future drabbles i’m sure :D love you too

The other ask about college reminded me, I just brought a physical copy of superbright to my college professor, I took digital painting with him and now he's letting me sit in on his life drawing class. He did a quick flip through and he liked it! He also immediately said "yeah if you like this art get into the history, who did they learn from?" I've only been following you for 2ish years? And it's just been what's landed on my dash. But I looove your pieces, the coloring on the backgrounds versus how Leo and Takumi are drawn, and then the pieces like the mainly pink diner.

So yeah mainly wanted to say you're super cool! Things that you learned from would be neat to see but no pressure.

i answered the rest of this under the cut

as far as my art history goes, i have no academic background in art so i'm just making stuff up. i think like a lot of kids I got my roots in wanting to draw like shoujo manga, particularly the big eyed round faces of the early 2000s. I would just try to copy the eyes or something. To this day I honestly don't really look at tutorials or watch speedpaints i kind of just look at finished art and try to emulate the things I like about them. It's very simplistic I think and perhaps means I don't make art that's as clean or efficient as people who actually go out and try to learn how pro artists actually draw.

i went on pixiv a lot as a teen and followed like 1000+ artists and looked at a lot of art all the time. I was really enamored by people who could draw characters and backgrounds, like fuzichoco. (this is a super weird fun fact but one of my favorite artists in like 2011-2012 who specialized in like drawing beautiful girls with beautiful backgrounds ended up getting into leokumi under a different name/account and i was their mutual! and i didnt realize this until rather recently. im too shy to share the name tho. my teen self is throttling me btw). I Really wanted to learn how to draw backgrounds so i had to go through the struggle of teaching myself perspective and later on downloading 3d software so i could see boxes on the same plane at angles lol.

When I see art I like I try to capture the essence of what it is I liked about it in a piece (maybe one time its desaturated colors, and the next its dramatically long legs, or adding blur to the foreground), and i decide if it worked out and I want to keep doing it. Some stuff i definitely continue to use is i draw upper eyelashes the way i do because of Sata (touken ranbu, feh artist) and i started drawing leo with weird non-blond hair colors because of Araki (the jjba mangaka, who often colors his characters in alternate palettes than their "canon"). Even though i think there are stuff im a bit rigid about, like i always kinda stay in the realm of anime style, I'm still trying to keep trying out stuff I see in other artists, not just even anime artists but everyone's favorite Leyendecker or Mucha, or I'll take photos of random stuff to file away as an idea. Like I have a photo of leaves my coworker collected that have a nice green to pink gradient that I took for inspiration.

As far as the diner picture goes I think to pull off that piece I needed to practice making art with less colors and also less contrast. Similar shades of pink take up most of the picture with teals being a secondary color and avoiding adding other colors in large amounts. I think the linework is doing a lot of work in that piece. I had to google a photo of a person sitting at a diner table for the perspective.
