“You goin’ somewhere?” You hear the gruffness of Daryl’s voice speak behind you. A sigh escapes your lips, but you don’t turn towards him as you continue to pack your bags without any desire to stop. “I’m leaving.” You keep it short, zipping up one of the bags before you move on to fill up another one. “Where?” He presses, watching you move around frantically.

You sigh once more, halting your packing before finally turning to face the man. One thing you’ve learned about Daryl since you’ve met him is that he’s usually great at masking his feelings, but right now there was a look of true concern. “I don’t know.” You answer truthfully. “Okay,” he stares at you in silence for a moment. “Why?”

“Why? Because you said when you were out there you blew up some guys that told you all your stuff belongs to Negan. That’s why.” You turn back around to finish loading your bags. “Yeah, so?” He shrugs his shoulders like it wasn’t a big deal, but anyone that knew Negan the way you knew Negan wouldn’t be so nonchalant about killing his men.

You whip around to face him. “So once he finds his men dead, he’ll hunt down the people that did it. He’ll find Alexandria, and then he’ll find me. I won’t go back to that place, Daryl. I won’t.” Your voice cracks as the memories of your dead friends flood your mind. “And I won’t see people I care about die again. I can’t see people I care about die again.”

“Listen,” he moves from the doorway, walking towards your shaken frame. “Even if he does find those guys, they ain’t alive to tell no tales. You’re safe here.” He reaches to wipe away your tears, but you smack his hands away. “No! We’re not safe here. As long as Negan is alive and breathing we’re not safe anywhere, don’t you get it?!”

“I don’t. ‘Cause up ‘til now you haven’t told me shit about this asshole.” Now his voice was defensive. He was right. You did keep everything about Negan under wraps since you’ve been in Alexandria. It was easier that way–easier to forget. You wanted to live in a community where you could forget what’s outside those walls, and for a moment you did. But now it was time to come back to reality and realize nowhere is safe.

“You wanna know about my past? Fine. 730 days. That’s how long I was locked in there. I counted. Everyday I counted. I was forced to be one of the many wives Negan had, forced to have sex with him or work for him. Do you know what happens to the workers there? They’re brutalized, killed, and sometimes when no one’s looking, Negan’s head men assault the women,” you watch the expression on the brunette’s face change into a sympathetic look.

“So I pretended, and I pretended well. Then when the opportunity presented itself, I escaped and never looked back.” You looked down at your feet, swallowing the lump that welled in your throat.

“Y’know the only reason he didn’t kill me after killing my friends is because…” you pause as your eyes start to brim with tears again. “He ‘liked my spunk’.” You repeat Negan’s words, almost hearing his voice in your head as you said it. You looked back up at Daryl, your eyes burning into his blue ones. “You should’ve left me to die out there, because then I wouldn’t have to live in a world where I worry about people I care for dying.”

Those words were like a spit in the face to Daryl. After he had brought you back. After you had become an official Alexandrian. After you had gotten so close to everyone here, especially to his own group. After you had gotten close to him. “y/n, you’re one of us now. You’re our people, and we protect our people. We’ll protect you,”

You scoff, turning away from him as you go back to your previous task. “I’ll protect you.” He says, his voice gentle. Gentler than you ever knew him to be. The words tug at your heart, but you don’t respond to him or even bother to look his way. He nods, taking it for what it is, and turns to head out. “Don’t make promises you can’t keep, Daryl Dixon.” You say before he exits. He stops.

“I don’t.”
