#merlin and arthur
ok so i've been trying to read a bunch of 'arthur returns' fic and i belatedly realized that Merlin probably suffered from 𝘴𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘦 ptsd and now im crying cuz i just visualized Merlin going through his ptsd like i did and now it just makes the fics 10× sadder
(spoiler: a lot of yapping)
like i can see Merlin watching Arthur sleep, checking if he's still breathing, checking his pulse and everything but then Arthur doesn't breath for 15 seconds and now Merlin's panicking, overthinking if he should nudge Arthur to stir him a bit to check if he's alive still then Arthur inhales and then Merlin breathes in sinc with Arthur. and then Arthur doesn't breath in what Merlin feels like a long minute (but in reality its probably just been less than 30 seconds) and decides to check his pulse to see if its still there but he's too impatient so he couldn't even wait 5 more seconds to find his pulse and just wakes Arthur up, this happens very often (every day) and Arthur's confused at first but when it keeps on happening he becomes irritated. he gets annoyed one night and was about to get mad but then he sees Merlin in the brink of tears looking straight at him, Arthur's hand is being held by Merlin like it's the only thing keeping him alive. Arthur tries to make Merlin sleep (he's seen the state Merlin was in and even a blind man can see that he wasn't healthy) but Merlin refuses to. Arthur decides to not sleep at all and stay up with Merlin.
they don't sleep the entire night and Arthur thinks this was just a one time thing but then he realizes that he's never seen Merlin sleep ever since he came back. he decides to stay awake and pretend to sleep until Merlin sleeps. when Arthur realizes that Merlin wasn't going to even lay down and 𝘵𝘳𝘺 to sleep he starts to get worried. hours past by and Merlin's fingers check for Arthur's pulse every now and then. Arthur's awake with Merlin the entire night and until dawn.
he still denies the thought that this was how Merlin spends his night ever since Arthur arrived but he still wanna check so he pretends to sleep that night again. the same thing happens again and Merlin doesn't sleep. when a few moments go by and Merlin doesn't check his pulse again Arthur thinks that Merlin finally slept out of exhaustion. but he could still feel Merlin's eyes on him so he decides to hold his breath for one minute.
not even 30 seconds go by and now he can feel Merlin's trembling hands on his wrists. Arthur still holds his breath and then Merlin tries to nudge his shoulder to stir him a little bit. Arthur 𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘭𝘭 holds his breath until he feels Merlin nudging him a bit more aggressively than before. Arthur takes pity on him so tries to act as if he just got woken up. Merlin apologizes for waking him up. Arthur was about to insult him to make it seem natural but then he sees Merlin's teary eyes and he suddenly hugs Merlin. both he and Merlin are a little shocked by this but none of them move. Arthur 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘶𝘢𝘥𝘦s Merlin to sleep by telling him that he wont sleep until he does. Merlin's stubborn at first but the days of not being asleep finally catches up to him and he 𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 sleeps. Arthur decides not to sleep until Merlin does and he does this every night since.
ok wow, that was a lot of monloguing, even for me. anyways see you later after I finished reading 'and like the cycle of the year, we begin again'

I think that if Arthur knew how much the druids worshipped Merlin, he would not take it seriously.
Just like how Merlin completely disregards Arthur being king, Arthur would not care in the slightest.
He would be shocked at first, but then he would get used to it. Eventually, he would use it to poke fun at Merlin.
Neither care about the other’s rank, and I think that its the foundation of their friendship.

nobody touch me I just thought about Merlin the day after arthurs death and felt my soul actually shatter. Because I cant imagine a human feeling more lost than he did in that moment.
no bc the idea of him that morning after, eyes sore from crying, not sure why he slept next to a lake and wondering what shenanigans arthur got him into this time or how annoyed arthur will be because he isnt there to wake him just for him to remember.

Cleric Merlin: [tending to Arthur, concern on his face] What happened?
Templar Arthur: Sword training. A rookie mistake made by one of the younger trainees learning.
Cleric Merlin: [hands glowing gold, healing the wound on Arthur's right arm] That's strange...
Templar Arthur: How so?
Cleric Merlin: You got cut. By a sword.
Templar Arthur: [eyebrow raised] Yes Merlin a sword does cut as you can clearly see—
Cleric Merlin: No. Arthur. You shouldn't have been cut at all!
Templar Arthur: [smirk] I know I'm a great swordsman and can dodge fairly well but accidents—
Cleric Merlin: Clotpole! Except it wasn't an accident!
Templar Arthur: [confused] Merlin—
Cleric Merlin: [rolls eyes] Didn't you tell me years ago when we first started training together that beginners start off with wooden swords or weapons made to be blunt and enchanted to stay that way?
Templar Arthur: Yes, I did, what does that have to do—...[he stares at Merlin, realisation upon his visage] Someone's trying to kill me.
Cleric Merlin: [unimpressed gaze] You don't say.

"All I want to do, is lie between your thighs."
"Arthur, you are drunk."
"Drunk because of your thighs, I love squeezing them."
"Hey! Enough, we're going home so you can sober off."
"I can sober between your—"
"Arthur!" – Arthur and Merlin
[Arthur couldn't help it, he loves petting Merlin's thighs. They make for a great cushion to lay his head on when he's tired or in the early mornings as he rubs himself against them.]

Last one for the night.
Sorry for the content dump. 🫶
Regency AU clip. Arthur and Merlin inspired by Anthony Bridgerton and Kate Sharma.
Arthur’s father, The Viscount, decided he had let Arthur ‘pursue fanciful whims’ long enough.
He wanted Arthur to find a wife this season.
Oh, joy.
It was for this reason, Arthur went for an early morning ride, to let out his overwhelming frustration and to get out of that blasted house with his siblings, more specifically, his elder sister and her eyes full of pity.
Morgana knew that Arthur wanted to hold out for love, the kind of love their own parents shared. Arthur felt it his duty to find someone who would one day become Viscountess, have his children and help him continue his family’s long-standing reputation.
The only problem, which isn’t really a problem, more of an inconvenience, was that Arthur didn’t like women, in the slightest. Romantically speaking, that is.
He found this out the hard way when his college mates tried to throw him into a room full of naked women.
Arthur was…curious. But nothing beyond that, women were a complete mystery to him so he was really just in awe of their natural bodies and how objectively beautiful they were.
But it did nothing. No part of him stirred or got excited. That’s when he started to become uncomfortable, because he’d always known, deep down, in a place no one ever sees.
He left rather quickly.
Thankfully, his friends had disappeared by then.
The ride led him farther into the woods than he usually went, but he knew his way around them.
He slowed his horse to a trot as he went lost in his thoughts.
That was quickly interrupted when he heard galloping approaching. Very fast.
Before he could think twice, the horse and the person riding it, raced just past Arthur, causing his own mare to stumble a bit.
Well, I’ve got to see what this is about.
That was the only thought to cross his mind before turning the other direction, taking off as fast as he could.
He spotted the horse and rider immediately. Arthur rode harder and urged the animal below him to follow.
He had almost caught up, when a branch that seemed to come from nowhere caught Arthur’s jacket and caused him to pull back on the reigns, involuntarily.
He slowed to a stop, laughing hysterically.
That was fun.
“You’re laughing a lot for someone who lost.” The voice was deep.
Arthur hadn’t realized the horse in front of him also slowed and stopped, unwilling to turn the opposite direction and face him.
Arthur took the stranger in, finally. All he could see was a blue cloak with the hood pulled up, hiding all identity.
The skilled hands gripping the reigns wore gloves.
“To be fair, we never agreed on a stopping point and that limb was interference, divinely guided as it may have been.”
“Oh, divinely guided, was it?” The man snickered, but it was closer to a giggle.
Arthur couldn’t read the stranger very well when he could not see him.
He took matters into his own hands and rode past the other man, then spun to see the horse-whisperer directly, face to face.
“Oh.”
He didn’t know what he’d been expecting.
But it was not to have his breath stolen.
He could not even see all of the man’s face, but what peaked out from under the hood was pale flawless skin and perfect pink lips.
Hooded eyes pointed to the ground between their two steeds.
“You’re awfully quiet for someone who won.” Arthur quipped.
The man finally raised him eyes in a glare that didn’t hold much heat behind it.
God, those eyes.
Blue like the ice that forms from dripping water on the window sills. The lightest clearest parts of the ocean. Pure and endless.
Wow.
Arthur had never been struck by a person’s beauty before.
“You’re a complete stranger, what if you have ill intentions, or try to rob me blind?”
Arthur threw his head back in a laugh at this.
“You aren’t that inattentive. My intentions are pure, you have my word. I am a gentleman.” Arthur smirked at the blue eyed wonder. He got a small smile in return.
“Well, I have to be getting back.”
No.
Arthur’s whole body practically howled the word. He’s not unable to control himself.
“Will I see you again?”
The man was already turning around to return from the way they came.
“Perhaps you will, my lord.”
Arthur sputters.
“How did you know I was-“
“I’m not that inattentive.” The man called over his shoulder before tapping the side of his boot on the horses flank and taking off into the trees.
Well, that was truly something.

An unnecessarily thorough analysis of the Tarot imagery in Merlin Season One by an amateur tarot reader
(who is also a hopeless romantic and is currently very affected by the disaster that is BBC Merlin)
I started watching Merlin around two months ago. I fell in love with the show instantly, even if I technically haven't finished it yet because of time reasons (though I did spoil myself everything right to the ending and I’m devastated. Still trying to find courage to start season 5. But that’s beside the point)
There was something in the first season that caught my eye and hasn't let me go since. In fact, I was thinking about it today, went on a search for discussions about it, fully under the assumption that this is something the fandom noticed long beforehand is a well-known fact. To my endless surprise, I’ve found no mention! Nada! Not a single one. That won’t do, I thought. I have to share with the people. It's something that fueled my conviction in Merlin the Show being a love story between Merlin and Arthur (whatever the nature of that love may be, I love both the platonic and romantic interpretation equally, though this specific instance could be leaning towards romance somewhat more, I'll explain it in a second) and here it is.
It's this scene.
Tumblr media
It is Merlin and Arthur, facing each other with two cups in between them, trying to decide who is going to drink the poison, sacrifice himself and save the other. And I thought Oh my god, tarot symbolism.
Tumblr media
That's the card, the Two of Cups. The similarities are obvious (and, in my opinion, very intentional. I’d like to kiss whoever came up with this specific creative decision)
Slight disclaimer: Tarot reading can be very subjective, meanings shift depending on the reader and their perception of the card. I’ll try to be objective with the main aspects of the cards, but there is a lot of subjective opinions too. It’s okay if you disagree)
The main meanings of this card are partnerships, loving relationships, mutual attraction, unity, harmony and, you guessed it!, soulmates. It’s not hard to see why that card would have been chosen to represent them. I think that’s the most outright the show’s ever been about calling them soulmates, without hiding behind labels such as ‘each other’s destiny’ and ‘two sides of one coin’ as if those are any less gay. There is also themes of equality and becoming one, mutual respect and, in certain cases passion and sexual attraction (though it’s not a definition that is applicable in all cases, and can absolutely be ignored for platonic or asexual relationships, it’s still one of the main aspects, given that its represented by, you know, the big red head of a lion with wings right at the top of the card. Can’t exactly forget about it.)
Personally I've always preferred the Two of Cups to The Lovers tarot card (which looks very similar and has some intersections in themes, also concerning love, intimacy, passion). Plus, The Lovers is part of the Major Arcana, so technically it should be more impactful, ‘epic’, someone said, divine. While doing some research into that distinction I've found why exactly it makes me a bit queasy. The Lovers are not always a card about love, in fact, more often it isn’t. And The Lovers aren't made for each other. That is to say, they obviously are, considering the entirety transparent Adam and Eve imagery (and this also makes it a more conservative card, with clear molds for a ‘traditional relationship’). The Lovers are brought together by a higher power, made for a purpose. It serves something. It is a message. It is a lesson. It's a choice between what you want and what you need. It is a partnership, often intense, out of this world, but it’s also about all the factors in between, the things that unite them, the snake, the temptation, the apple, the garden. It can be also about soulmates, and happy relationships, of course, about fated lovers… and mortal enemies. It actually is more in line with Merlin’s and Morgana’s relationship. Out of this world fated connection? Absolutely, guaranteed. Do you want that kind of connection though, really?
How is this relevant, you might be thinking?
Well, there is no such divine power pushing the couple portrayed by the Two of Cups. In fact, they are choosing each other. It’s only them and their union. That’s why I like it so much. They are only the way they are, not the way they are meant to be, not specifically made for each other and yet they are right for each other anyway. And, somehow, just being them is enough. Is that not love?
In Merlin we are told that Merlin and Arthur are a part of each other’s destiny. The Once and Future King and Emrys, his protector, uniting Albion, prophesized by some unnamed seer(s). Does not seem very much like a choice, does it? I guess it depends on the way you view the prophecy and destiny in the show. Is it really all inevitable, and destiny is set in stone, unable to be changed, all leading to the same end, no matter what you do? Or is it the choices themselves that are the constants, fixed in place by the prophecy fulfilling itself? I think the answers to those questions are entirely up to each viewer, and that we can only speculate on it, and never know for sure which was it. Maybe there isn’t a right answer at all. But what I do know is there was a choice Merlin and Arthur made. Let’s return to the imagery on the card..
The couple is exchanging the cups. They are not just toasting – they are performing a ritual, a ceremony. Like exchanging rings, like giving vows. It’s a promise, it’s a connection, it’s a new step, it’s a commitment. And the parallels of the scene in 1x11 don’t end with just imagery. Merlin and Arthur complete the ritual! In the show!
Tumblr media
In the episode 1x04, The Poisoned Chalice, Merlin starts the ritual by drinking from Arthur’s poisoned goblet, which he does to protect him. I would also like to add that this is the first time Two Cups appear that season (that's twice they used the imagery), notably, two ceremonial goblets that are supposed to symbolize peace and partnership between two kingdoms. Even if it doesn’t represent the actual state of the two kingdoms, it definitely shows King Bayard’s genuine desire for a peaceful alliance. And Merlin drinks from one of them!
Tumblr media
Merlin drinks poison for Arthur and in Labyrinth of Gedref, Arthur drinks ‘poison’ for Merlin in turn. Very unconventional way to get married, I must say, but it’s remarkable that they do it in the same way (even if not at the same time).
So. What does all of that tell us about Merlin and Arthur?
We’ve established that the card signifies a very close, strong and significant relationship, chosen by both parties. Again, I like that it emphasizes the choice, that they didn’t just fall into the friendship because of destiny (even if it aided them). The Two of Cups is a part of the Minor Arcana, which deals with the every day matters, earthly lives. Is that not fitting? Merlin didn’t choose The Once and Future King, he chose Arthur, and Arthur didn’t choose Emrys, he chose Merlin.
Merlin’s who been promised a peaceful future. A land where magic is free. Merlin, who knows what’s supposed to happen: The Once and Future King brings that future. The King dies. Merlin, who has a choice to bring that future. To save Mordred. To remove the ban on magic. He doesn’t choose that, he chooses to essentially destroy that future entirely, just so he can have Arthur.
Arthur, who values Merlin’s opinion above everyone else’s, Arthur on his deathbed, finally seeing Merlin for who he is, says, “I don’t want you to change, I want you to always be you,” Arthur, who is dying, a few steps from the chance being saved, (still too far, not enough time), decides to stop because in his last moments he just wants to be held by Merlin.
They chose each other.
And that’s, dare I say it, love.

Arthur: I want to wake up to you every day for the rest of our lives.
Merlin: I wake up at sunrise.
Arthur: …
Arthur: I want to see you at a reasonable time every morning for the rest of our lives.
Merlin: I could always laze in bed till you wake up.
Arthur, knowing that will more than likely mean waking up to Merlin playing with his hair every morning: Perfect. Yes. Do that.
