that post abt naming places in fantasy just crossed my dash and it makes me laugh because people compliment the place names for locations in wdww/tkor but like...... they're dumb. they're really dumb. i literally CANNOT have the names in English so i plucked words from icelandic/danish/swedish/old norse/old english, mangled them a bit, and then mashed them together. if i named these places in English they'd be called shit like Hot Lake, Dark Hole, Water Houses, Raven's Home, Erdan's Stone (ok those last two sound neat but)

I hate naming fictional places so I pick some words (either rare words or ones in another language) and mangle them until they sound cool. that's it. if there is any deeper meaning behind the names, i made it up via bullshittery AFTER the fact, not before. my ““conlang”” consists of like a dozen words that I recycle constantly because making new words requires brain to do the thinking thing.

lots of the places in wdww/tkor have "myrar" in them because I like that sound, so I was like "this uuuhhhh it means darkness so um. these are places connected to darkness somehow?" and then made that happen because it's my fantasy world and I can do what I like. "wicc/wycc" is also used a lot; I've now decided that the spelling varies based on whether it's a prefix (wycc-) or a suffix (-wicc), but initially it was because I couldn't remember how to spell my own fake fantasy words and thought that 'cc' to make a hard 'ch' sound was nifty.

i aspire to be like j rr tolkien but honestly I'm only ever on his level in retrospect. in this house we slap random things on the page and scramble desperately to justify them afterwards. and y'know what? it works.
