2022 Cayenne Turbo GT
Porsche is introducing a new high-performance variant at the top of the Cayenne model range: the new Cayenne Turbo GT combines phenomenal performance with a high degree of utility. Its 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine develops 631 hp - 90 hp more than the Cayenne Turbo Coupe. Torque also increases from 567 to 626 lb-ft. As a result, the Cayenne Turbo GT can accelerate from a standstill to 60 mph in 3.1 seconds, complete the quarter-mile sprint in 11.6 seconds and achieve a top track speed of 186 mph, making it the quickest, and fastest production Cayenne ever offered by Porsche.
The Cayenne Turbo GT, which is only available in the Coupe body style, is equipped as standard with an array of performance-enhancing suspension systems and high-performance tires that were made exclusively for this model. The result is a performance SUV that remains very much a Cayenne to its core, and yet possesses reserves of power and ability that allow it to be adept on a demanding road or even a track. By way of demonstrating its capabilities when pushed to the extreme, Porsche test driver Lars Kern took to the legendary Nürburgring Nordschleife where he set a new official SUV lap record of 7:38.9 minutes with the Cayenne Turbo GT for one 12.9-mile lap.
Compared to the Cayenne Turbo Coupe, the Turbo GT has a 17 mm lower ride height. The suspension components as well as the electronically controlled chassis systems were specifically calibrated to enhance performance. The three-chamber air suspension is up to 15 percent stiffer and the damper calibration of the Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) is retuned, as is the Power Steering Plus and rear-axle steering system. The active Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) has also been re-tuned to further reduce body roll and leads to more precise turn-in at higher cornering speeds. To complement this, Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV+) and the further improved front axle sharpens the vehicle handling and turn-in response. The front wheels are one inch wider compared to the Cayenne Turbo Coupe, and the negative camber has been increased by 0.45 degrees to allow the specially developed 22-inch Pirelli P Zero Corsa high-performance tires to maximize their contact patch with the road. Stopping power is induced by the standard Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB), which are wrapped in yellow calipers, but can be optionally equipped in high-gloss black. The rotors measure 440 mm in the front, 410 mm in the rear.

Optimized V8, Tiptronic S with quicker shift times and titanium Sport Exhaust
The twin-turbo engine in the Cayenne Turbo GT is the most powerful V8 currently offered by Porsche. The most significant optimizations were made at the crankshaft, turbochargers, direct fuel injection system as well as the intake and charge air cooling. The V8 of the Turbo GT is significantly altered compared to the engine found in the Cayenne Turbo Coupe, with a different crankshaft, pistons, connecting rods, timing chain and the torsional dampers. The eight-speed Tiptronic S automatic transmission has been modified to offer quicker shift times. Porsche Traction Management (PTM) on the Cayenne Turbo GT has been fitted with a water-cooled transfer case, which further increases the thermal capacity of the drivetrain under high loads. The standard Sport Exhaust system is fitted with centrally-mounted tailpipes and has been specifically developed for the Cayenne Turbo GT. The exhaust is made of lightweight and particularly heat-resistant titanium, which, due to the lack of a center muffler, reduces its weight by approximately 40 lbs.

Optionally available in the new color Arctic Grey, the Cayenne Turbo GT underscores its high level of performance with a number of model-specific design cues. A GT-specific front fascia with a pronounced front lip and larger side air intakes characterizes the front of the car. The contoured carbon fiber roof, black fender arches and the 22-inch GT Design wheels in Neodyme stand out at the sides of the Cayenne Turbo GT. The upper rear wing features side plates in carbon fiber along with an adaptive rear spoiler that features a two inch (50 mm) gurney flap, which is twice the size of the one on the Cayenne Turbo Coupe. The rear diffusor cover made of carbon fiber completes the rear design of the vehicle.
The performance-oriented character of the Cayenne Turbo GT is further enhanced by the extensive level of standard equipment. Eight-way Sport Seats in the front and a sport rear seat arrangement with two seats are standard. All seats are GT-specific with perforated seat centers in Alcantara®, contrasting stitching in Neodyme or Arctic Grey and “Turbo-GT” designations on the headrests. Appropriately, the multifunction sport steering wheel has a yellow 12-o’clock center marker.
Debut in the Turbo GT: New infotainment system for the Cayenne
The Turbo GT is the first Cayenne model to adopt the next generation of Porsche Communication Management (PCM) with improved functionality, a new user interface and new operation logic. PCM 6.0 is fully compatible with Apple CarPlay as before, but now also allows for integration of Apple Music and Apple Podcasts. Additionally, the system is now compatible with Android Auto™, allowing more smartphones to be paired to the car.
The Cayenne Turbo GT is available to order now and expected to reach U.S. dealers in early 2022. The MSRP is $180,800, not including a $1,350 delivery, processing and handling fee.

Game 369: Mythos (1985)
Maybe “Axis” isn’t a great name for a German game company? I’m just putting it out there.

         I wonder if Richard Garriott ever truly understood the number of copycats and clones that spawned from Ultima. We’ve all heard about how he got upset at Deathlord (1987), but did he know about Gates of Delirium, Hera, Legends, and Skariten, all released the same year? He required SSI to license the “look and feel” of Ultima for Questron (1984), but did he realize that plenty of other titles were copying not only the look and feel but also the precise keyboard commands? Did he know that the United Kingdom’s first RPG, 1982’s The Ring of Darkness, had everything including its plot points plagiarized from Ultima? This is my 369th game. Of them, twelve have been actual Ultimas, about 28 of them have been so close that I’d call them “clones,” and another four dozen took direct inspiration from the series for one or more of their elements. I know Lord British hasn’t exactly been overlooked in the history books, but as well-known as he is, he may still get too little credit.
          The influence of the series was particularly felt in Germany. The U.K. had The Ring of Darkness but mostly went their own way after that; France went its own way from pretty much the beginning, derivatives like 1984’s Tyrann aside. Germany would get there, but at the outset they always seemed to be cloning something, whether Ultima, The Bard’s Tale, or Dungeon Master. Nippon (1988), Seven Horror’s (1988), Die Dunkle Dimension (1989), Kayden Garth (1989), Dragonflight (1990), and The Ormus Saga (1991) all owed something to Ultima, and now we find that the country’s first RPG (unless something else surfaces) is a direct clone.               
The game is noted for full-screen graphics during key encounters and transitions between areas.
            To what extent is Mythos a clone? To the extent of using mostly the same races, classes, attributes, and spells. To the extent of having you purchase hit points from the king. To the extent of needing to find a key to free someone from the king’s jail so that you can travel through space. But it also strips away a lot of what makes Ultima tolerable. You can’t talk to guards and random NPCs, for instance. There are only four levels of weapons and armor (three of which you will probably never possess), only three spells, and only half a dozen keyboard commands.
But Mythos does add a couple of features, the most prominent of which is a number of full-screen illustrations to accompany key encounters and transitions between areas. I wouldn’t say they’re beautiful, even accounting for the graphical limitations of the era, but they’re clearly made with a lot of care, and they liven what would otherwise be a terribly fast, easy clone. There are also a couple of other twists that I’ll cover anon.          
Approaching the endgame castle.
          The backstory sets the game in the world of Vandor, once peaceful, plunged into chaos when the Isle of Evil emerged from the depths of the sea of Pasmes. King Aphnaton disappeared from his castle, Talamith, and the land is now ruled by his sister, Zenobia, and her husband Alexander. The light of the sun has dimmed, monsters roam the land, formerly lush valleys are now barren, cities deserted, forests full of perils. You’ve heard it before. A prophecy tells of a hero who will set things right.           
Character creation.
           You create this hero by allocating 60 points to strength, speed, intelligence, and wisdom and then selecting a class (warrior, thief, magician, monk) and race (man, elf, dwarf, hobbit). Just like Ultima, these selections have no effect on the game at all except by modifying your attributes. Any character can wield any weapon and cast any spell (with one exception). The game doesn’t give you the option to name your character.            
The game begins at the southern end of the land.
            Gameplay begins at the southern end of a continent that turns out to be shaped something like a cross, or maybe a bird with its wings expanded. It consists of maybe 10 game screens with a castle, five cities, and a few other special locations. A castle and a city are waiting for the player at the beginning of the game. Before you can enter either, you’ll probably be attacked by an orc, giant, dragon, zombie, or some other evil denizen. If you’re not surprised, you’ll have options to fight or flee. If you fight, your only options each round are to attack or cast a spell.

          Like many early RPGs, success in the game comes down to simple math. You start with 300 hit points and can purchase more from the king at a rate of 100 hit points for 50 gold pieces. You also need food to keep from starving, which can be bought at the same 2:1 rate. You need about 4,000 food and 3,000 hit points to last the game, which together cost 3,500 gold pieces. You maybe need another 2,500 gold for purchases, so that’s 6,000 gold total. At a rate of about 50 gold pieces per combat, you need about 120 random combats throughout the game. You encounter far more than that in the course of exploring the world, so there’s not much need to grind except at the very beginning, when you want to build up your hit point reserve so you can comfortably explore away from the castle.

         Ultima made things harder by offering fewer gold pieces and making enemies do more damage. Here, even dragons and giants, fighting against characters with fists and no armor, do damage in the single digits. Your opening pool of 300 hit points goes a long way by itself. There’s no reason to use the S)teal command (unlike, say, Ultima II) unless you’re just incredibly impatient.

         There’s not much to do in the castle. There are signs saying, “weapons, “armor,” and “food,” but there isn’t actually anything there, and you can’t even open the doors to get into the locations. All you can do is visit the king, who sells hit points, and the queen, who tells you to seek her brother for his magic ring. You can also mark the location of one guy locked behind a door, as you’ll need to free him later.
     The five cities are all set up the same. Weapon shops sell maces, machetes, battle axes, and swords. Armor shops sell four levels of armor. In both cases, the gap in price between the first level and second is so extreme that you’re unlikely to even buy the second level (let alone the third or fourth) before you find the magic sword and magic armor as part of the quest. I’m not sure they’d even help; enemies barely scratch you when you’re unarmed and naked.

          There are three spells, each treated like inventory items that you purchase and equip. “Sanctu” heals a few hit points but is a far worse deal that just spending what it costs on extra hit points in the first place. “Exitus” lets you flee combat, but never in the game should you be in a position where you have to flee to survive. I have no idea what “Goldazium” does; every time I try to cast it, the game says “you need more intelligence or wisdom” despite my trying it with characters with scores of 35 or higher in both. There’s no way to increase attributes after creation.
        Each city also has an oracle, which gives you hints, and a pub where you can often buy special items. One of these is a map of the land. Another is a special key, of which you ultimately need two.

          Winning the game means visiting each location and piecing together the various oracle hints. It starts by purchasing the key in one of the northern cities. You use it to free a mage from the small room in the castle. As a reward, he opens a “space gate” in the northwestern “arm” of the land.             
At least I don’t have to kill a bunch of guards.
           To use the space gate, you need the coordinates of the planet where King Aphnaton fled. You get those from one of the oracles. The Master of Space accepts your coordinates and flings you to a one-screen planet where the only thing to do is enter a tomb. There, you encounter the ghost of King Aphnaton, who had exiled himself and was then killed by the same evil being who took over Vandor.

           Aphnaton poses a riddle, which for me was the hardest part of the game. In German, it was:
Wie der orbis ist seine form
Und das ist seine norm
Er ist klein
Aber fein
Und gross wird dir sein nutzen sein
I translated this as:
Its shape is like the globe
And this is its norm
It is small but fine
And will be of great benefit to you
The answer was RING, which should have been obvious if I’d remembered why I needed to see the old king in the first place. But by the time I encountered him, I had forgotten that I was supposed to get a ring from him, so I was stumped on the riddle. I tried things like “egg” and “seed” before it dawned on me. The key word is orbis, which most dictionaries don’t even have as a German word. I guess maybe they were going more for “orbit” than “globe”? I have plenty of German readers, and I’m sure someone will comment. Anyway, when I finally got it right, the ghost gave me the ring and sent me back to Vandor. 
The second key is needed to enter the ice caves of Madra, a relatively unusual puzzle in which you have to find your way through a series of rooms, arranged in a 5 x 5 grid, in 24 turns or you freeze to death. It’s presented in first-person wireframe form like early Ultima dungeons, although there are no monsters and otherwise nothing to do but figure out the right order through trial and error.

         Getting through the ice caves dumps you into a hidden valley where there’s a hidden town. In the town, the only thing to do is grab the magic sword and armor.

          Once you have these items, you go to the far north of the map and summon the ferryman, who requires the ring and his name (CHARON), the latter also provided by an oracle. Charon ferries you to the Isle of Evil, where you enter the one-screen castle of the game’s antagonist, Irata, who helpfully has a sign in her castle announcing her intention to be evil and rule Vandor.

So few evil enchantresses announce their intentions in contractual language.
           Although there are things in the castle that look like enemies or NPCs, you can’t interact with them. You are, however, attacked by random monsters as you walk through, as if it were an outdoor map. When you reach Irata, you don’t even have to attack. The moment you approach her square, the game tells you that she catches fire and burns with a single blow from the magic sword.               
That was easy!
          After that, you get a final congratulations screen that says the king makes you a baron and the land is restored to peace, at least until Mythos II.         
Some online rumors suggest that Köper finished Mythos II but never released it.
          Other than its claim as the first German CRPG, Mythos‘s legacy rests on its creator, Karsten Köper. Just 17 when he wrote Mythos, Köper would soon begin work on a more ambitious project, Amberstar, which he brought to Thalion Software in 1991 and saw published in 1992. Thalion had previously issued Dragonflight (1990) without Köper’s influence, although that game also had a lot of references to Ultima, including a statue paying tribute to Lord British.         
Who do you suppose that is?
         Mythos is generally called Mythos 1 online. I guess that’s what appeared on the package. But the in-game title screen omits the number even though Köper reportedly intended the game as a trilogy. A Thalion fan site has a page dedicated to Mythos. They’ve collected a number of contemporary reviews. German magazines seemed delighted to finally have a CRPG in German and thus tended to be complimentary. One of them claimed to have spent 11 hours on it and suggested that “beginners will have fun for weeks.” What a time. As for me, I don’t need to spend a lot of time criticizing a teenager’s first game. I gave it a 17 on the GIMLET–mostly 1s and 2s, although I gave at a 3 for graphics, sound, and interface, recognizing the attention to full-screen graphics and the ease of the keyboard shortcuts.           
Given that depiction of a cave entrance, I might have been too generous on the graphics.
           I want to thank commenter Jan for alerting me to this title’s pedigree before I started Amberstar, which will be soon. But I’m pretty confident that after another visit to The Legacy, we can finally pick up Ultima VII where we left off.

The New 2019 Porsche Macan S Is Better than Ever
MALLORCA, Spain — When you hear the name “Porsche,” your mind’s eye conjures something low, compact, possessed of a famous silhouette that even a kid could imitate in a few pencil strokes, and that howls angrily at every stab of the throttle, right? Well, I hope so. And so does Porsche. The 911 is the brand’s icon and the bedrock of a prodigiously successful business, yet it remains a cult hero. Very few ruthlessly executed profit centers command such a misty-eyed sense of purity amongst enthusiasts and customers.
But what you’re reading about right now—a compact SUV with the engine in the front, a platform shared with more prosaic VW Group brands, six cylinders in a V rather than horizontally opposed, and a curb weight of 4,200 pounds—is Porsche’s bestselling vehicle in the U.S. It is responsible for around 40 percent of all sales in our market, so the refreshed 2019 Macan qualifies as a Very Big Deal, certainly more so than a GT3 RS or 911 Turbo. And the $59,650 Macan S, which we drove on the Balearic Island of Mallorca, is by far the most popular variant of this biggest-selling model.
So what’s new? For a start, the engine. The old 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged unit is gone, replaced by a V-6 of similar displacement but with a single, twin-scroll turbocharger. That turbo is now mounted within the valley between the cylinders in a ‘hot vee’ configuration, in German-engineer-trying-to-sound-cool vernacular. The new engine is lighter and more efficient, and it’s also more powerful, of course. The S model produces 348 horsepower from 6400 rpm and 354 lb-ft from barely above idle—1360 rpm—all the way through to 4800 rpm. The seven-speed dual-clutch PDK automatic now shifts even faster in Sport mode. Porsche claims a top speed of 151 mph, as well as a zero-to-60-mph time of 5.1 seconds (4.9 if equipped with the Sport Chrono package). That latter figure puts it just a tenth behind the outgoing 360-hp GTS model. The entry-level Macan retains the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 248 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque and starts at $50,950.
The Macan S might be a philosophical universe away from the 911, but Porsche labels it the “sports car of the segment” and has gone to great lengths to further sharpen the dynamics. New aluminum spring forks reduce unsprung mass by 3.3 pounds, new anti-roll bars and revised dampers are said to enhance agility, the new engine’s mounts are said to offer greater consistency and control, and the width of the front wheels has been increased from 8.0 to 8.5 inches in an effort to create a more neutral balance. Essentially, all of the foregoing is about getting the front to turn-in more quickly and precisely.
The geekiness of the engineering is delightful. For example, there’s a new composite brake-pedal assembly that’s 300 grams (0.7 pound) lighter than the old steel setup, and which acts on a shorter arm to the master cylinder to cut response time and improve feel. This is the sort of stuff you expect to read in a specialized track car’s press kit and either speaks volumes about Porsche’s commitment to the cause or shows just how far it has had to go to improve upon the last Macan. The brake discs are bigger, too, because of course they are. You want ceramics on your compact luxury SUV? Porsche has you covered. In fact, the striking Miami Blue example we drove had every conceivable dynamic option ticked: the PCCB ceramic brakes; the Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus rear differential; the Sport Chrono package that includes the steering-wheel-mounted rotary switch to toggle between Normal, Sport, Sport+, and Individual modes; and the air-suspension that also includes the PASM adjustable dampers. That’s around $15,000 in performance options.
On lightly trafficked highways like those we traversed on Mallorca, the sports car within the Macan S is pretty well hidden. Th crossover rides with a relaxed fluency, the PDK ’box shifts almost invisibly, and the new engine produces plenty of easily tapped torque. It feels extremely well-built too, and the new 10.9-inch touchscreen and infotainment looks good and works intuitively. Like all Porsches, the Macan S possesses a polish that runs deep, and while it might not have the design flair of something like the Range Rover Velar, there’s a timelessness to the Porsche’s look that provides a reward all its own.
Up in the hills, the Macan S simply drives away from the competition. The steering is a little heavy but it’s wonderfully accurate and provides just about enough feedback to live up to the sports-car billing. The front tires never seem to give up no matter how much you ask of them, and the old Macan’s slightly contrived tendency to create an abrupt yaw moment has been buffed away. The balance remains slightly rear-biased but it feels more consistent and natural. The overall weight catches up with the dynamics eventually, and the air suspension means the Macan’s not as crisp as we’d like when it’s being flicked back and forth on these mountain passes, but when you remember the mass you’re trying to cajole it’s pretty damn impressive.
The new engine provides plenty of performance and linear response but it’s not exactly inspiring. It sounds a bit strained as you rev it out, while the odd pop and crackle from the exhaust is mildly amusing but doesn’t inject any real character. On this evidence the Macan S is definitely the sports car of its segment, but it still isn’t a sports car in the traditional sense.
We’ll admit we’re being picky. The Macan S drives extremely well, exhibits superb body control, and has consistently powerful and feelsome brakes (even the non-ceramics). We sampled another Macan without the air suspension, and while the ride is a shade less supple, it has a more natural, honest feel and seems to better control weight transfer, too. Suddenly the Macan feels lighter and more alive with barely a penalty in terms of refinement.
Is the new Macan it fit to wear the new-for-2019 Miami Blue or Mamba Green paint, colors more closely associated with Porsche’s sports cars? Well, it will be a very long time before we picture an SUV when we imagine a Porsche tearing through canyons. Even so, it’s nice to know that when design details from the iconic 911 are supplanted onto a completely different sort of vehicle that Porsche cares about the dynamics. The new Macan S is better than the old Macan S, which means it’s better than all its rivals, at least if you prize driving fun. It seems that’s mission accomplished.

First Drive: 2018 Porsche 718 GTS U.S. Spec
Some eight-or-so years ago, the newly minted 2011 Porsche 911 Carrera GTS and its fresh acronymic title attracted a fair share of scrutiny. Aside from the handful of semi-cosmetic GTS trims on the bygone 928 and the Cayenne, a comprehensive GTS package was a new, scary thing. For some, it made the 911 (and Panamera) lineup more confusing than ever, serving as a cynical cash-grab that was too expensive for a non-GT product.
Now, we know better. The 997.2 GTS proved to be one of the sweetest drivers from that era, and launched a successful model branch that’s an expected and integral part of modern Porsche. It’s usually the one to buy too, provided you can afford the extra cash.
The new-for-2018 718 GTS twins should come as no surprise, then. Following the same GTS formula developed nearly ten years ago, the range-topping (for now) 718 Boxster and Cayman GTS essentially check all of the available boxes on the dealer order form, with a few trim-exclusive goodies thrown in for good measure.
For an extra ten grand over the “S” model, Porsche glues “GTS” script to the rear decklid and adds a bundle of battening-down hardware. Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) is standard, as is Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV) with a limited-slip diff, and 13-inch front brakes pulled from the base Carrera that hide behind 20-inch wheels plucked from the Carrera S. For those who are never satisfied, Porsche will throw PASM Sport into the mix for a piddling $290, dropping the ride height down an additional 0.8-inches. It will also install a set of carbon ceramic brakes for a whopping $7,410.
Aesthetically, the new GTS twins look subtly aggressive thanks to the standard Sport Design package, which adds modified front and rear fasciae, accentuated by darkened script and trim. Inside, most surfaces are upholstered in Alcantara, with exclusive “GTS” script embroidered into the headrests. The essential Sport Chrono pack is standard as well, adding a perfectly designed sport steering wheel and stopwatch/clock combo unit on the top of the dash.
The wick is turned up on the same 2.5-liter turbocharged flat-four found in the “S,” boosting output by 15 hp to 365 hp. If you stick with the six-speed manual, torque remains at 309 lb-ft, but PDK drivers are rewarded with an extra eight lb-ft. Crucially, the engine speaks through a standard sport exhaust. At speed, the four-banger sounds tuner-chic, with aggressive snorting and crackling on the overrun. There’s intake rush, turbo spool, and baritone boxer rumble.
