Upgraded my cutting table setup. 😁 Still a work in progress—I have someone local designing me a permanent working table with nice shelves and storage. In the meantime, I found a banquet table for just $25 and got it propped up using folding table raisers. And today my 3’x6’ SpeedPress cutting mat arrived. Haven’t used the mat yet, but I’m gonna hope the quality is good and excited to try it out. 🤩 Definitely gonna be nice having such a large working surface. What Music Journalism Could Mean

I get asked a lot why music journalism is something I specifically want to do - surely it’s just a bunch of people spitting their unfounded opinions all over the internet for no one to read, right?

Honestly, I think you’re not wrong... at its surface level, music journalism is something just about anyone could do, and it doesn’t really need to be something grounded in musicology, or academic level research. Think of our lord and saviour Lester Bangs. Outside of the records labels would send him for review, his research was essentially just hanging around rock stars wearing problematic t-shirts and doing too much speed over his typewriter. But still people read him, and bought his magazines, and disillusioned young people all over the world are still desperately trying to become him (myself included).

Why?

Because all I want to do is try to articulate why what matters as much to me as breathing should matter to you. And also to hang shit on bands of boys too good looking to be trying to play rock and roll (I’m looking at you, Rathammock).

But seriously, music is something so special, especially to disillusioned teenagers and outcasts on the edge. If I hadn’t had the music my dad so carefully helped me find just when I needed it while I was growing up (the cure for my angst, tom waits for my circus-freak phase, the ramones for my first pair of doc martens and shaven head), I’d be an entirely different person now. And I’d probably be a lot less self-assured, quieter, and hollow inside. But it’s just a guess.

To be a girl (or anything other than a cis white man (eyeroll)) and love rock and roll almost requires a suspension of disbelief, like reading sci-fi - except it’s more a suspension of feminism. It’s a disturbing thing, but to enjoy almost anything you have to suspend critical thinking and freefall. I read an essay collection edited by Rhian E. Jones called “Under My Thumb: Songs That Hate Women and the Women Who Love Them” and, even though it wasn’t especially enlightening in terms of new information, it was such a relief to see my thoughts and feelings articulated - I didn’t feel so alone. And even when I was the only girl at various punk shows in dingy basements, I felt those authors/contributors with me.

I want to be one of those people, holding some young girl’s hand in a punk show, telling her it’s okay to throw herself into the pit and scream and yell and also criticise the use of bitch and whore in the song lyrics she was just singing along to.

I see you and I love you and we can talk about this, even if we are just a bunch of losers spitting our unfounded opinions all over the internet for no one to read.
