It becomes quite clear that this section of the city hasn't been maintained by citizens in years.

Coupled with the correct tone of a blog, this photo can be especially effective: it communicates a story in front of a famous destination and two people enjoying their cloudless afternoon. A human element also adds scale. Without the photoshopped man in the background would you look twice at this photo? A viewer has no concept of how large the driftwood and bushes are nor the rock in the background. Further, it was shot wide angle so scale is already an illusion. Placing a human element psychologically brings the viewer in. Simultaneously, a human element invites them to look again, even search for more easter eggs (hidden elements). Edit consistently

In addition to sticking to your tone, you should edit your photos within one blog post identically and within the blog itself, similarly. In the gallery below, two of the photos match styles. The other two were edited as I continued to learn and, as such, lack a cohesive style. Look specifically at the blues. Until I am blue in the face: the camera does not contribute to the artistry of photography until the mind behind it understands how to use their camera as an intended tool. Although there is a newer Mark III model out, I think it has an overwhelming amount of bells and whistles. This version remains one of the best mirrorless, lightweight cameras on the market. It is able to automatically shoot simple, automatic photography but the moment you decide to really get into shooting, it also comes ready with professional features. It's the middle ground between professional and hobbyist. Phone photography: Samsung Galaxy S10+

At the end of the day, the best camera is the one you have with you. Camera photography is no joke. Samsung's Galaxy S10+ features a wide angle lens (equivalent to 12mm) and crazy manual control you usually only get from a paid app otherwise. This also means control over your focus. Introduction

Since the time primordial man first picked up a rock and thwacked a scurrying rodent on its head to fix his dinner, mankind has always been inventing things. Improvising, innovating, crafting tools out of almost nothing to overcome the many difficulties of day-to-day life. Whether it was the rudimentary spear crafted by sharpening the end of a stick or much later a simple chair, inventions have shaped our very evolution.

Before you get worried we’ll assure you we’ve not gone that far back in time.

The inventions we’ve covered span core-science aeronautics, biology, physics, medicine, automobiles, electronics and of course technology. We’ve avoided things like “fire” or “the wheel” because quite frankly no one really knows how the former was discovered (not invented) and who invented the latter.

1.3D Printers

The 3D Printer is one of the greatest inventions of the 21st century allowing you to turn your ideas into real objects.

The latest Bond movie, Skyfall used a 3D printer from a German company called Voxeljet to produce three 1:3 scaled models of 007’s Aston Martin just to blow up during the movie!

What sounds like a really cool toy to have is actually used for some very serious operations. Let’s first understand how it works.

3D printing is achieved using an additive process in which successive layers of materials are laid out in different shapes. Cutting and drilling (also known as subtractive processes) are not involved at all making the process easy, efficient and highly suitable for prototyping.

The biggest consumer of the 3D Printer is the medical industry. So far it has produced prosthetics and bones and the ability to generate human

organs from these machines is currently being tried out. If this is managed, it could revolutionize medicine and completely obliterate the need for organ donation. Using a 3D printer in conjunction with CAT scans, surgeons can print out tumours so that they know exactly what they’re dealing with.

We’re sure you’re familiar with Pirate Bay, the file sharing company. It has launched a new content category called ‘Physibles’ i.e. data objects that can be made into physical products. 3D blueprints are uploaded and shared with those who want to print out the actual objects.

2. Airplane

The Wright brothers are given credit for the invention of the Airplane in 1903. The first flight lasted a little over 12 seconds at Kill Devil Hill, Northern Carolina. Since then, much progress has been made in the world of aviation. The sky wasn’t the limit here. War and sci-fi stories inspired great minds like Konstantin Tsiolkovsky and Werner von Braun to achieve flight beyond the atmosphere, making space travel a possibility.

The invention of the airplane sped up services in every single field starting with the postal service in 1920. World War II in 1939 kick-started developments in the aviation sector. Countries competed with each other to one-up the others’ sophisticated developments, with the British developing the airplanedetecting radar followed by the Germans developing radio wave navigation techniques. Fighter jets, advanced landing systems and high altitude aircrafts followed.

In 1947, US Air Force Pilot Captain Charles Yeager broke the sound barrier in the first supersonic flight becoming the fastest man alive.

Commercial flights started not long after and now, well, an airplane makes a landing somewhere around the world every three seconds!

Air travel is considered to be the safest form of travel in the world. A funny but true fact reveals that donkeys kill more people annually than plane crashes. Inspite of these phenomenal odds, 80% of the population of the world has Aerophobia, viz fear of flying. In some (5%) this fear is so intense that they abandon flights and opt for other modes of transport.

We’ve come a long way since 1903. In fact the wingspan of a Boeing 747 is longer than the Wright brothers’ first flight! The world today would be crippled without the discovery of flight. Businesses would crash, economies would slow down, worse still, holidays would be cancelled!

3.Artificial Intelligence

AI could be on either end of two extremes – man’s best invention or worst. In its best light, Artificial Intelligence would showcase robots, drones, machines serving us making daily life easier and more efficient or, as seen in movies, taking over the human race and entirely replacing the work force leading to unemployment, depression and general laziness.

The study of Artificial Intelligence formally began in Dartmouth College in 1956, as an effort by a group of research scientists to evaluate and mechanically replicate human intelligence. That is, they wanted to program machines to think and respond like humans. Their research was based on the assumption that a machine can be made to simulate learning, reasoning, logic and intelligence demonstrated by humans when given proper description and direction.

Every future invention by man will have its base in AI. Every invention will require an intelligently thinking bot to perform tasks faster and more efficiently than their human counterparts.

Essay grading software, weapons that have minds of their own, Siri by Apple, Kinect the 3D gaming interface, Watson by IBM – formerly a trivia expert machine now used to make decisions on lung cancer treatment and smart CCTVs that can identify crime as it happens: these are the varied and most advanced productions of AI.

4.Biometric Scanners

Biometrics – turning yourself into an identity card. No need for passwords, ids, pin numbers, etc. All you need is you. It’s a move from traditional access control systems to feature-based authentication that provides access based on physical presence rather than token (such as passport or drivers license) and knowledge based (password or PIN) methods.

With advancements in e-commerce and e-transactions, individuals have to retain a large number of passwords, PINs and identity cards. This number will only grow in size with passing time. Passwords and PINs are easy to crack by the right hacker, thus compromising your security. Biometrics couldn’t have come at a better time offering the ideal kind of security since no two fingerprints are alike.

The use of Biometric Scanners could unleash an era of super secure gadgets. It is already being used in cars programmed to operate only when a known driver is in the driver’s seat, weapons which fire only on detecting the owner’s fingerprints and smart household security systems that keep intruders out, among other applications. Not only fingerprints, facial scanning biometric devices are also not rare. Take the Samsung Galaxy S III for example. It has a Face Unlock feature which makes sure that only its owner can unlock the phone.

Fingerprint scanners are the cheapest and hence most commonly used biometric devices. Face and voice recognition follow, as iris and retinal scanning are concepts that most people find intrusive and are not too comfortable using.

The invention of Biometric Scanners was a big step into the future. They’ve led to the creation of the ultimate unique identifiers – those that cannot be forgotten, changed or lost.

5.Bluetooth

A wireless technology used to exchange data over short distances using short-wavelength radio transmission, Bluetooth was created by Ericsson in 1994 as an alternative to data cables. The term “Bluetooth” is an anglicized version of Blatand, the epithet of 10th century Danish king Harald who united separated Danish tribes into a single kingdom. The technology was named after him as Bluetooth does what Blatand did but with communications protocols – unites them into one universal standard.

Since its introduction, Bluetooth has increased in popularity over the years – while in 2008, only 5% of mobile devices were Bluetooth-enabled, in 2013, roughly 95% of mobile devices support it. Also, while traditional Bluetooth devices only worked within a range of 10 feet of each other the newest versions now enable transfers to a distance of up to 100 feet. However, what makes Bluetooth stand out as a form of wireless data transfer is that it uses very little power, can be incorporated into a wide variety of devices and can have up to eight devices communicating with each other at once and automatically without a user’s prompt.

Sony Xperia L4 review

Sony’s smartphone division has fallen behind the likes of Apple, Samsung and OnePlus in recent years, forcing it to adapt.

The release of the Xperia 1 in 2019 marked a shift in strategy for the Japanese company, introducing a 21:9 aspect ratio for the first time.

Now, it’s bringing this tall, thin chassis to budget phones, starting with the Xperia L4.

Can this standout feature make the phone a true budget contender, or are there too many compromises in other areas? Read our full review to find out.

Design

The first thing I noticed about the L4’s design is the shift to a 21:9 aspect ratio. It’s the most obvious difference over last year’s L3, and the first time Sony has brought this tall, narrow form factor to its budget line.

Its effect on the user experience remains largely the same as 2019’s Xperia 1 and Xperia 5. Despite only sporting a 720p display, many films look stunning displayed in their native format, free from any letterboxing.

However, it’s punctured by a rather unsightly teardrop notch, something that isn’t present on the more expensive Sony phones. That houses a single 8Mp front-facing camera, without support for face unlock.

With a sizeable chin, the phone lacks symmetry to the point that it becomes annoying at times. The 79.5% screen-to-body ratio is by no means a dealbreaker, but even budget phones regularly exceed 85% in this regard.

The unusual aspect ratio also makes the 6.2in phone almost impossible to use one-handed. That’s typical of many handsets over 6in, but its effects are magnified on such a tall display.

With so many budget phones looking similar these days, the 21:9 display is a surefire way for the L4 to stand out from the crowd, but its implementation does cause a few complications.

The other key design choice is a side-mounted fingerprint scanner. Like with the Xperia 5, a patent issue means it couldn’t be integrated into the power button, and the latter is therefore placed awkwardly low on the side of the device.

The sensor itself is easy to enrol and had an extremely high success rate in my testing, even when my finger was wet.

Another notable inclusion is a 3.5mm headphone jack. Although Sony has brought this back to its flagship Xperia 1 II for 2020, it’s been an ever-present on the company’s budget line.

Combined with a very decent pair of downward-firing speakers, the Xperia L4 offers some excellent audio options.

Flipping the phone over reveals triple rear cameras, with the main 13Mp lens joined by 5Mp ultrawide and 2Mp depth sensors. The latter means the L4 is capable of portrait mode shots, although we’ll have more on that later.

The back of the phone is where the plastic build is most apparent, although it definitely doesn’t have the same cheap feeling as its predecessor. That’s particularly apparent on the black model I tested, although it’s also available in a more eye-catching blue variant.

I felt comfortable enough testing the phone case-free, and the Corning Gorilla Glass screen means I’d be confident of it surviving the drops you might expect in everyday usage.

Hardware

The Xperia L4 sounds pretty unspectacular on paper. Powered by a MT6762 Helio P22 processor, the only configuration offers 3GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. The latter is expandable via the microSD card slot, although it would have been nice to have more flexibility here.

Indeed, the below benchmarks would appear to tell a similarly mediocre story. The L4 performs only marginally better than 2019’s Xperia L3, and lags well behind the best budget phones on the market.

However, this is a classic case of benchmarks not necessarily being representative of real-world usage. I really enjoyed using the Xperia L4 as my everyday phone, to the extent that I was reluctant to take my SIM out of the phone once I’d finished testing.

Moving through the UI was smooth and seamless, with Sony’s stripped-back interpretation of Android undoubtedly contributing to that.

It’s definitely not suited to power users, and graphic-intensive gaming didn’t quite hit the mark, but for everything else it was a joy to use.

Software

The Xperia L4 comes running Android 9 Pie out of the box, and unfortunately there’s no indication whether it’ll get the update to Android 10.

That means you won’t get the improved notification and permission controls or new fonts, although that wasn’t a big issue for me.

Interestingly, Sony has released a patch that means you will get the option for a system-wide dark mode, so that’s something. The company’s phones had also already embraced gesture-based navigation, so you don’t have to worry about missing out on that.

Subtle differences in Sony’s gestures mean there’s a slight learning curve, but once I became accustomed to them I definitely wouldn’t go back to the traditional on-screen buttons.

As always, you can bring the traditional nav buttons back by heading into settings.

As I alluded to in the previous section, this is a thoughtful interpretation of Google’s software that focuses on the basics.

The main point in its favour is that there’s very little bloatware. In fact, a basic music player was the only app I could see that you might not find on Pixel phones. Snaps from the camera even go straight into Google Photos, instead of the Gallery app we so often see from third-party manufacturers.

This makes it excellent if you’re heavily invested in the Google ecosystem, although the flexibility of Android means it’s easy to install third-party alternatives and transform the look and feel of your device.

Potential lack of updates aside, the software on the Xperia L4 is a joy to use.

Cameras

The Xperia L4 comes with an impressive-looking triple rear camera setup, although that’s par for the course when it comes to modern budget phones. The main 13Mp sensor is joined by 5Mp ultra-wide and 2Mp depth sensors.

Unfortunately, despite sounding good on paper, the L4’s cameras are a bit hit-and-miss.

As you’ll see from the samples below, it regularly has issues with exposure. In many of the shots I took, either the background was overexposed, or darker elements in the foreground underexposed.

As you can see above, you can get some nice shots in optimal lighting conditions, but it feels very hit-and-miss. 

It’s easy to say that you’re not buying a £169 for its photographic prowess, but Sony has specifically drawn attention to the Xperia L4’s triple cameras and so their performance is slightly underwhelming.

On the video side, the phone is capable of 1080p video at 30fps, while there’s also the option to take advantage of the 21:9 aspect ratio for recordings.

Footage is fine if you plan on keeping movement to a minimum, but will quickly become juddery with anything more due to a lack of optical image stabilisation.

Battery life

The Xperia L4 comes with a 3580mAh, up from 3300mAh on the L3. Despite having a similar resolution screen, its performance on Geekbench 4’s battery test was significantly down on its predecessor.

8 hours and 48 minutes is around average when you compare all our smartphones, but I was expecting it to be closer to the 11 hours and 6 minutes from the L3.

It’ll get you through a full day without a problem, but it’s far from being a contender for our best battery life phone.

One area it did perform well was standby time; I was able to leave the phone with less than 5% battery for a number of hours without it running out of juice. This is an area that some Android phones struggle with, so it’s even more impressive here.

The phone does support 18W fast charging, although it’s a separate accessory which is ‘available soon’ at the time of writing.

I was able to get 22% of battery in 30 minutes from off via the adapter in the box, so you’re looking at around two hours for a full charge.

Price and value for money

The Sony Xperia L4 costs £169 via the Xperia Official Partner in the UK, where it’s also available for the same price at Amazon.

There are no configuration options beyond colour, so in exchange you’ll get 3GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. The latter is expandable via the microSD card slot, although that’s pretty mediocre when you consider what else is available on the market.

At this it’s going head-to-head with many of the entries in our best budget phone chart. Similarly priced options such as the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9S and Oppo A5 2020 show what is possible at this end of the market, thus drawing even more attention to the L4’s shortcomings.

I wouldn’t say it’s poor value for money per se, but the wealth of extremely capable sub-£200 handsets makes the L4 less attractive for the average consumer.

Verdict
