anyway definitely rlly embarrassing for izzy tho that he’s like “i’ve worked for him for years… i know him better than anyone…” about ed while also believing that any time ed does something a little whimsical and goofy it’s a sign he’s having some sort of psychotic breakdown and meanwhile stede hangs out with ed for like a month and develops a preternatural intuitive understanding of the contours and shapes of ed’s very soul without even trying
Man, but the CONFIDENCE with which Izzy asserts that he knows Ed better than anyone. I honestly don’t think that he’s even jealous of Stede—he truly thinks that the Ed he knows is the real, absolute Ed, and that Ed transforms into something else with Stede (something, not someone). Because he believes so strongly that no one else could possibly know Ed as he does, he works everything into this narrative that he thinks makes sense and completely misses the reality of what’s happening (it’s Ed’s feelings for Stede that are causing this meltdown! It’s Ed being infected by Stede Bonnet that makes him so emotional!). It could never possibly be that Izzy himself never knew Ed.
And he keeps trying to reconcile this even after he’s been shot. He claims that Ed and Stede “balance each other out” and that he gets that now. They don’t! That’s not true! Stede lets Ed be himself, and Ed lets Stede be himself—in all their trauma and imbalance and weirdness and softness!
Ed keeps screaming “this is who I am!!” and Izzy never believes him. OF COURSE HE GETS SHOT.
are you absolutely scaling the walls over how this is framed so eerily similar to stede trying to hold it together alone in the captain's quarters after murdering ned and is something something yet another example of stede always isolating himself and his emotions lest he be shamed for it something something or are you normal
