Back when I was first reading Tai Sui, I remember that when I read "we will meet beyond the bounds," for the first time, I misunderstood what Zhou Ying was talking about. I didn't catch the reference to reuniting beyond the false "bounds" of their world, and I thought "beyond the bounds" was a euphemism for beyond the veil of death. "We'll see each other again in the afterlife," in other words.
It took until Xi Ping thinking about his own interpretation of "beyond the bounds" for me to realize that ZY wasn't necessarily talking about death at all, but simply escape. It was kind of a big "oh shit" moment in the course of my readthrough.
Then, of course, Zhou Ying's quest to get beyond the bounds doesn't reunite him with Xi Ping after all, and Xi Ping makes a bet with Bai Ling in their old age. Who will see Zhou Ying first—Shiyong in the world of humans or Bai Ling in death? And Xi Ping loses that bet.
So now the question of Zhou Ying's meaning is haunting me. Xi Ping thought he meant beyond the bounds of the constrained world they inhabited, but was my first reading actually wrong? Did that gambler Zhou Ying really think he had a chance at seeing Xi Ping again, only to lose his bet? Or did he suspect he might die apart from Xi Ping all along and cloak an insinuation of the afterlife in language his cousin could accept? Or was it both, maybe? Was he accounting for both possibilities and using obscure language on purpose for double-speak? I know he says he "won't die," but does not dying mean seeing his Shiyong again before death?
I'm inclined to think it's something like the last one these days, if only because I think dual meanings and passive self-destruction suit Zhou Ying, but who knows? Every version is perfectly heart-wrenching in its own way.

Got to the big cousins reunion scene as I'm rereading Traveler Abroad and I'm going to go genuinely insane. They've missed each other for so long that Xi Ping doesn't even remember how to talk to him. What the fuck.
I need to chew on something violently
