One out the million reasons i dont like THG book->movie adaptions is how they completely destroyed Peeta’s character.
Book Peeta was INSANE like he was on a whole other level. Peeta Mellark is the definition of a sassy man, and they took that away. They took away flirtatious, funny Peeta, and turned him into a fucking simp. Like yes, he was also a simp in the book but in the movies they made that his entire personality. They made it seem like he revolved his whole life around Katniss. They removed the majority of his iconic lines except “she came her with me” and “if it weren’t for the baby”.
They also removed the fact that he was a painter, although in Mockingjay, Katniss says the " Youre a painter…", but I have actually seen people get confused by that and it kills me 😭 Like how he would paint his nightmares as a coping mechanism.
They also really glossed over his trauma. Like him being abused. AND HIM LOSING HIS LEG??! I feel like that’s SO important and it gets on my NERVES.
Also his accent. God. If he had an appalachian accent AND he said his iconic lines, I wouldve died on the spot honestly.
There’s just so many things they got rid of from his character and I feel like it was because they tried to market “the love triangle” as a main theme, and if that was going to work then they had to give Gale some chance right? Because if they copied and pasted Peetas character from the books then i’m willing to bet “Team Gale” would’ve never been a thing. But it just makes me sad that they reduced a film about various issues of our society into a love story. Like yes there was still obviously a love story in the book, but only between Peeta and Katniss, because Gale was never an option LOL. Anyways i just feel like they made him a boring character. Same with Katniss. Both of their personalities were taken away from them but Josh and Jen did the best with what material they were given.

TFA and TFP cossover!
Yes, I'm finally doing this. Before we start, I just wanna say this.
TFA Optimus: Prime
TFP Optimus: Optimus
TFA Ratchet: Doc Bot
TFP Ratchet: Ratchet
TFA Bumblebee: Bee
TFP Bumblebee: Bumblebee
TFA Ultra Magnus: Ultra Magnus
TFP Ultra Magnus: Magnus
TFA Bulkhead: Bulkhead
TFP Bulkhead: Bulk
Please enjoy.
"Conecting the fusion generator derectly to the power line will increase the range!"
"Puh-lease. Unless you want to implode the moment you try to transport, we'll send the energy through an alternate route so it can be prossesed properly!"
Ratchet and Wheeljack were currently arguing over a new version of groundbridge that would use a fusion generator to enhance performance. However, they couldn't agree on how to encorperate said generator.
Miko had heard enough of the constant bickering, and was finally starting to see why Ratchet disliked her so servearly. "Quiet!" she suddenly shouted, hopping over to the groundbridge power switch, "If you two can't decide, I will!" With that she pulled up the switch and the unfinished teleportation divice powered on. Various cries of "No!" and, "Don't do that!" could be heard from the 'fore arguing 'bots.
The groundbrige started to pull things in, not unlike a blackhole. Miko would have been gone if Wheeljack hadn't grabbed her at the last minute. Then the 'bots started to get pulled in. Just then the rest of Team Prime burst into the room. "Ratchet, what is happening?" Optimus questioned. "Miko turned on the unfinished groundbridge, and the imence power has turned it into a blackhole!" Ratchet informed.
"Well then shut it down!" Fowler shouted, making sure his hold on June was tight. "Can't!" Wheeljack called back, "The power switch is stuck!"
With that, Team Prime was sucked into another demintion.
*Meanwhile in TFA*
"Will you shut your intake about all this Decepticon nonsence?!" Sentinal Prime was at the moment yelling at the purest being in the next thousand solarsystems. Optimus Prime was having none of it. He had to let Jazz and Ultra Magnus know they were driving into a Decepticon trap! He was about to retaliate, when a green-blue portal resembling a spacebridge suddenly appeared next to them. Even stranger, 8 *enormus* bots fell out of it before closing. The two stared in shock.
"State your designations!" Sentinal shouted. The largest one got up with a grone. "Apologies. My desigation is Optimus Prime, leader of the Autobots," he said.
Sentinal laughed, "Good joke! Now who are you really?"
"Optimus," Ratchet started, worry in his tone, "I don't think we're on Earth anymore. At least not *our* Earth." The news sunk in to the other Primeverse 'bots.
"Come on Ratch. Of all the- wait a minute. Primus, I think he's right!" Wheeljack added.
"You are disrispecting a commanding officer! I demand to know your true designations now! Or else I'll have you all arested!" Sentinel was fuming. By now everyone had gotten on their pedes, and the Stealhaven was *cramped*. "Hey can we head outside?" Smokescrean asked. "No!" yelled Sentinel.
"Who put the guy with thg he giant chin in charge?" spoke up Miko Nakadia. Sentinal squeeled, "An organic!"
Miko bursted with laughter, and you could see some others trying to hold in their own giggles.
"Perhaps it is best we step outside," sugested Optimus, and slowly but surely, they made their way out of the Stealhaven.
"Now, can I have your designations?" Sentinel more demanded than asked.
"Smokescrean, Elite Guard."
"Bulkhead, Ex Wrecker."
--Bumblebee, Scout.--
"Arcee, warrior."
"Wheeljack, Ex Wreacker."
"Ratchet, Medic."
"Ultra Magnus, SIC of the Autobot army."
That last one got to Sentinal. "Liar!" he shouted, "You're not Ultra Magnus! Ultra Magnus is out on a mission! He's the leader of the Autobots! And he doesn't look like that!"
"Looks like Ratchet was right. It does kinda seem like we're in another world," Arcee added.
"Have any of you noticed," spoke Jack Darby, "We're totatly out in the open." The new information suddenly became clear to the others on Team Prime. There were tons of civilians watching them. "Autobots, our cover has been blown," Optimus said.
"Wait!" called a new voice, "The humans don't fear us! We work with them!" All helms (and heads) turned to the source of the voice. A young looking 'bot with hints at a firetruck alt mode. "You don't need a cover here. But that doesn't matter now, because two of the 'bots from this world are driving into a Decepticon trap!" said the firetruck. "Optimus, enough with this nonsence. Their are no Decepticons of Earth," Sentinel glared at Prime, but he did not notice everyone else glaring at him.
"If this world is anything like our own, there are most deffinetly Decepticons here. My team and I will asist you if need be," Optimus said to the two Animeted 'bots. This brought a small smile to Prime's lip-plates.
"Follow me!" Prime called before transforming and driving off.
Optimus signalled his team to follow suit.
------------
I'm going to leave it at that for now. Updates will come, but I don't know when. It could be a few days or a few months. I don't know. Sugestions are welcomed and encoraged! Untill next time, have a dandy day/night!

it's wild when I think of thg and the concept of class, classism and capitalism both the books and irl. concepts like racism and various forms of class divide were used as tools to keep people at each other's throats while the Elite kept themselves in power
a poor yt girl in Appalachia on tiktok had once said that poor yt ppl in rural areas will have more in common with black ppl from the Projects in the city than they ever would with other yt people in elevated classes
and I was thinking of Finnick, who is a Career, and how in the first book the Careers are viewed as antagonistic and a Threat from Katniss' pov. in book 2, it's through her friendship and alliance w Finnick that it's shown they have more in common than they don't. Haymitch's "remember who the real enemy is"
the divide in the districts, esp from like district 12 and district 4 (Finnick) or even district 1 or 2, is engineered specifically to prevent uprisings and alliances. District 1 is *not* the Capitol. they still have some pretty bad treatment, too. The Career districts get a Heavy amount of propaganda to keep the disillusionment in tact. District 2 is the bulk of the military, it would stand that the most propaganda was put towards keeping them in line, hence why district 2 isn't much involved in the Rebellion
the Irish when they came to America were treated horribly, but their proximity to poc caused enough of a sense of danger for the elite, the elite decided they got to be yt now bec the divide and having the poor yt folks and poc at each others throats kept their own positions secure. Through the infighting, the class divide grew greater and greater and the lack of education and the government and the propaganda has the fingers pointed towards the minorities and off of them
this post is a bit all over the place so I might remake it sometime bec I've been working on it all over today, but I'm hoping the Point is there lol

Post 2: Winter Solstice and Stars
I'm back to set the stage for what I'll call the next piece of my canon evolution.
Winter Solstice and Stars were both written in the winter of 2012/2013. They're little more than vignettes, as I tried to learn how to deal with District 12 as a setting and Katniss and Peeta (and Madge and Gale) as characters.
At this stage in the game I hated Gale. I loved Madge. I absolutely hated that they did not include her in the movies.
Winter Solstice has some glorious head jumping. I wasn't ruthless about not doing back then, and I even ask for feedback on it! It's also hilarious to me that Peeta's brother isn't named Rye. You'll also see my trademark use of food beginning here. My dialogue is stilted, but I like what I did with some of the character interaction here. Definitely character driven without a ton of plot action.
Gale's a bit of a douchebag. Even then, I shipped him with Madge. I feel really awful about what must happen behind the scenes in this fic and I sort of want to hit him. If only I could apologize to Madge and tell her that I make it up to her in glorious fashion later.
I remember that we had a lot of conversations that winter about how there's no religion in THG. I adamantly believed that there would still be some festival of some sort and I wanted to try my hand at writing something.
Stars is another little character driven piece. It's to get into Peeta's head at various times. Inspired by Orion, it was more an homage to what the Stars above 12 must look like without a lot of light pollution. There's some stilted internal dialogue in this one as well. But I'm super proud of how easy it was for me to hop right into Peeta's head those days.
Winter Solstice: Fanfiction.net A03
Stars: Fanfiction.net
I love some of these older fics because it really shows you where my skill level was and also my headspace with regard to canon.

There’s been a few “Gale isn’t that bad posts lately. Yeah, he wasn’t evil, but he wasn’t good either. And that’s on purpose.
On a meta level THG trilogy is a retelling of Dante’s Comedies. Gale is Virgil, Katniss is Dante, and Peeta is Beatrice.
Virgil (and therefore Gale) represents human reason, while Beatrice (Peeta) represents divine love. Katniss is Dante, moving from Virgil to Beatrice, who then transcends to Paradise (or a world where Peeta's children can play in the meadow).
Here’s the gist:
In the opening scene of The Inferno, the first book of The Divine Comedy, Dante (the author, the main character, and the first-person narrator) awakens in a dark wood midway through his life’s journey, having strayed from the True Way. A shade (i.e., a spirit or ghost) of the Roman poet Virgil appears to Dante, having been sent by Beatrice to lead Dante on a journey through Hell, Purgatory, and eventually Paradise (Heaven). Virgil leads Dante through the various circles of Hell and partway up the ascent of Purgatory before Beatrice takes over as Dante’s guide the remainder of the way through Purgatory and on to Paradise.
So why must Beatrice take over for Virgil as Dante’s guide? Virgil symbolizes human reason in The Divine Comedy, the power and achievements of the human intellect left to its own devices without God, without the redemption offered by Jesus Christ, and without the influence of the Holy Spirit. Human reason is symbolized elsewhere in The Divine Comedy by the faint illumination coming from a citadel, what translator John Ciardi calls the “Citadel of Human Reason” in Limbo, the first circle of Hell (see The Divine Comedy, Canto IV), where the virtuous pagans and unbaptized souls, those who were otherwise virtuous but who lived prior to the incarnation of Jesus, and those who were unbaptized and thus unable to be redeemed and allowed to enter Paradise, reside eternally. Virgil explains to Dante that Limbo is where he resides as well, having both lived and died before the time of Christ. Limbo is a place of no punishment but still one of eternal separation from God’s love, and hence a place of no further hope. At the Citadel of Human Reason in Limbo, Dante finds the great humanistic philosophers in the history of philosophy: Socrates, Plato, Democritus, Diogenes, Thales, Anaxagoras, Zeno, Heraclitus, Empedocles, Cicero, and Seneca—even Euclid, Ptolemy, Hippocrates, and other figures symbolizing the great achievements of pure human reason. Because Virgil symbolizes human reason, and because of the general Medieval mindset that human reason alone cannot lead to salvation, Virgil, by definition, cannot lead Dante into Paradise.
For Dante’s journey into Paradise he must have another guide: Beatrice, Dante’s symbol of divine love. Beatrice, of course, was Dante’s principle love interest, as described in Dante’s La Vita Nuova, a collection of Dante’s poems with his own explanation of their meaning and symbolism. In La Vita Nuova, Dante recounts three key events in his interaction with Beatrice: when he first becomes enamored with her as an adolescent, when she rejects him nine years later, and Beatrice’s death at age 25. The fact that the first two events occurred at nine-year intervals, the number nine (the square of three, the number of the Holy Trinity) traditionally representing perfection, undoubtedly influenced not only Dante’s view of Beatrice as symbolic of divine love both within The Divine Comedy and in the structure of The Divine Comedy itself: nine circles of Hell, three books of 33 cantos each for a total of 99 cantos, etc.
Side note, a huge clue the the trilogy is a retelling is the format that the author used: 3 books, each has 3 parts, each part has 9 chapters…
Anyways, Gale symbolically represents man and man’s base desires. This is shown through his *slight* inability to control his sexual desire for Katniss
Then suddenly, as I was suggesting I take over the daily snare run, he took my face in his hands and kissed me. I was completely unprepared. You would think that after all the hours I’d spent with Gale — watching him talk and laugh and frown — that I would know all there was to know about his lips. But I hadn’t imagined how warm they would feel pressed against my own. Or how those hands, which could set the most intricate of snares, could as easily entrap me. I think I made some sort of noise in the back of my throat, and I vaguely remember my fingers, curled tightly closed, resting on his chest. Then he let go and said, “I had to do that. At least once.” And he was gone.
and through his understanding but lack of compassion for the “other” both at home
Gale knows his anger at Madge is misdirected. On other days, deep in the woods, I’ve listened to him rant about how the tesserae are just another tool to cause misery in our district. A way to plant hatred between the starving workers of the Seam and those who can generally count on supper and thereby ensure we will never trust one another. “It’s to the Capitol’s advantage to have us divided among ourselves,” he might say if there were no ears to hear but mine. If it wasn’t reaping day. If a girl with a gold pin and no tesserae had not made what I’m sure she thought was a harmless comment. As we walk, I glance over at Gale’s face, still smoldering underneath his stony expression.
and during wartime
At some point, Gale and Beetee left the wilderness behind and focused on more human impulses. Like compassion. A bomb explodes. Time is allowed for people to rush to the aid of the wounded. Then a second, more powerful bomb kills them as well. “That seems to be crossing some kind of line,” I say. “So anything goes?” They both stare at me — Beetee with doubt, Gale with hostility.
“They could still escape through the train tunnel to the square,” says Beetee. “Not if we blow it up,” says Gale brusquely. His intent, his full intent, becomes clear. Gale has no interest in preserving the lives of those in the Nut. No interest in caging the prey for later use.
His character is not meant to be evil or good, but morally questionable.
Katniss started in a low place and transcended to a higher level of being, from survival to living with purpose. Peeta started high with a strong sense of self and a higher level of goodness, descends with the torture and highjacking, and then ascends again after a lot of struggle. Gale's arc is static. He is basically the same from the beginning of the book to the end, and while we can imagine that everything he's gone through must have changed him in some way there's no textual evidence to support such claims.
At the beginning of THG Katniss calls him the person that knows her best. Perhaps he was, for a while, but as she goes through her arc there is a wider and wider divide between the person she started as and the person she becomes, and I'm not entirely convinced that he ever truly understood her, just as she didn't totally know herself.
When they first meet Gale basically accuses her of stealing, it takes them forever to actually trust each other enough to become friends. Their relationship starts contractually, a give and take, and the spirit of that never really changes.
He shows a lack of respect of her opinions if they don't align with his own. He tries to bring up the idea of having a family one day, and she immediately shuts him down telling him she doesn't want that. She wonders why he's bringing it up because there's never been anything romantic between them. Then later, in the arena, she admits that things have been different between them for the past six months or so, implying that he's been different. We later learn that he realized he felt jealous when other men paid attention to her.
He never tells her how he feels, but instead kisses her weeks after she returned home from a super traumatic experience telling her he HAD to do that. That kiss really bothers me, because he didn't ask first, so it feels a bit like a violation of her trust. Their kiss in District Two also really bothers me. She has not been in a good headspace and making out with a grieving depressed suicidal girl is just taking advantage, even if he does stop once he realizes she's out if it.
She tries to warn him about Snow when she returns from the Victory Tour, and later tries to warn him about the weapons and the Nut, and he refuses to take her seriously, with terrible consequences.
It feels a bit like he's holding Katniss emotionally hostage, if she refuses him he will end their friendship (or that seems to be Katniss's fear, that she'll lose him). Halfway through CF and at the end of MJ she expresses relief that he’s not there, first because he will think anything she does with Peeta will be seen as an act and therefore won't hurt him (which makes her feel guilty, because really she doesn't have romantic feelings for him) and later because of his actions in the war.
He isn’t evil, he's an asshole. By design.

LEAVING ASIDE the nonsense that was the marketing for these films, how do you feel about the songs Taylor released on the THG soundtrack?
oh i love them!! i actually think eyes open is the superior hunger games song of the two and i think it's a brilliant interpolation of taylor's own relationship with fame projected onto katniss in a way that i think highlights just how incisive the commentary of THG is -- like "everybody's waiting for you to break down/everybody's watching to see the fall out" could easily be on a track like the lucky one and it clearly reflects a lot of taylor's own anxieties about fame and celebrity -- but the fact that it maps so perfectly onto katniss is just like MWAH! perfection. and it's just proof that suzanne collins tapped into a VERY real set of feelings and ideas about fame and living under intense scrutiny. and the hunger games-y lyrics are SO GOOD bc they feel natural but also are so specific and cool: i love "keep your aim locked the night grows dark" like YES LOVE IT.
to expand on that honestly... i think that line eyes open in particular is proof to me that a lot of great songwriting comes out of using stories that are not your own. i think another great example of this is olivia rodrigo. like don't get me wrong: i LOVE deja vu. i think it's a pretty perfect pop song honestly. but "can't catch me now" is SUCH A GOOD SONG. it has imo a some of her best songwriting on it, because i feel like it gave her new metaphors to explore and made the lyrics and the music feel fresh -- like "there's snow falling over the city, you thought that it would wash away the bitter taste of my fury and all of the messes you made" is a BRILLIANT line! like to me, it's leagues above "i used to think i was smart but you made me look so naive" (i could write an essay on my feelings on vampire honestly but that's just one example) (like i really genuinely enjoyed guts a LOT -- but it did start to get repeptitive, only being about heartbreak and insecurity. yeah those feelings are rich and layered! but i also like the song about falling in love with a future fascist dictator and then disappearing into the woods a la wordsworth and exiting in a perpetual state of unreality for the rest of time. like that one was really good too! (another side note is that she has that one unreleased song on her instagram inspired by twilight -- and it's also like, wonderfully written. like yes olivia, free yourself from the need to be a diaristic songwriter and just write insane fandom songs. PLEASE.)) (i felt the same way about "what was i made for?" -- like that song is PERFECTION in the way it maps so perfectly onto the metaphors and images of the barbie movie and yet it stands alone as a great song as well. low key i wished wwimf and ccmn had been released in two dif years because i wanted them both to get the best original song oscar. just incredible work by our gen z pop girlies.)
and to go on and on MORE... all of this is why i think the taylor swift effect in pop music has been like... honestly a net negative for a lot of artists honestly. like music doesn't NEED to be about gossipy personal details to be good! don't get me wrong, i love the way we get to dive into "taylor's diary" and i think it's the reason i still love so many of her personal songs -- bc they feel like various entries into the experience of growing up as a lonely little girl and trying to understand your place in the world. and exploring the evolution of her personal relationships over the years is really cool and makes for a fascinating body of work to dive into and analyze. but also... sometimes songs are still good even when they're NOT intrinsically tied to the personal life of the singer! like nobody cares if "toxic" is about justin timberlake or kevin federline or whatever -- it's just a great fucking song and it doesn't matter that it's britney singing it, except in that her vocal delivery and performance style lends itself to that banger of a track! (AND THIS IS TRUE FOR TAYLOR TOO! i've said often she does her best work when she's fantasizing -- "you belong with me" is inspired by a phone call. "august" is a completely pretend story. "death by a thousand cuts" is about a movie. like those are some of her best songs!! and it's at least in part because they feel expansive and fresh because they're NOT ABOUT HER!)
anyway my point is not to say that diaristic songwriting is bad or that i don't like it -- because i really DO, i love looking at the connections between taylor songs across albums and eras and analyzing how she ties certain images or phrases to certain muses and tracking the evolution of her relationship to life and love over the years. but i also just think she's a good songwriter -- so when she writes songs about other stuff... it's interesting and cool. i wish she'd do more of it haha

Another one! 🤭.
I read your reblog and I'm here to ask about Nina in thg! I asked this to other mutuals so... What about her? Can she win? And her District..etc ❤️
Thank you so much for the question, Flor!🤍 and sorry for the long ass reply, but I got a bit carried away lmao
Nina would be district 9, grain. I think her reaping would be just bad luck: she’d be reaped on the last year she can be, at the age of eighteen. Everyone’s sure she won’t make it, not only because she comes from a poor district, but also because physically she wouldn’t stand a chance.
The thing is, Nina plays the games. And that’s what brings her to victory at the end. From the very moment she steps on the train, her brain would start working incessantly, trying to make up a good strategy. Briefly, her strategy would be being invisible. She figures that if she keeps a low profile, the other tributes won’t consider her a danger and won’t go for her first. For example during the short training, although she’s quite skilled with a knife, she only focuses on the things she can’t really do. She knows winning the Capitol’s favour would play a big part in her surviving, but it would expose her to a greater risk, so that’s something she gives up. She never just watched the games, she studied them, looked for patterns, and tried to keep herself educated by trading bakery stuff for books at the black market, so she knows a lot about edible and poisonous plants, basic survival skills, etc. This allows her to have more chances at surviving on her own.
Her strategy would work: during the games, people almost forget about her. They think she’ll just die at some point. Even the Gamemakers don’t bother messing with her, they focus on breaking the alliances, creating suspense. Nina’s not that interesting. This allows her to stay hidden and watch (she’d figure how the arena works, the various alliances, when it’s safer to move, and keep count of the deaths).
People would only notice her when the games are almost over, like there are 4 or 5 tributes left and she’s one of them. I think she’d manage to keep her hands clean until the end, when there’s just two of them left. But as soon as she hears the signal that another tribute has died and there’s only another one left, things would change drastically, and she’d start an actual hunt. There would be a physical fight, probably with a career, and she’d have a hard time with that. But again, she’s skilled with a knife, and desperation would make her unhinged.
Basically, she’d be the most unexpected victor of the Hunger Games. A few years after winning the Games, chances are she becomes a rebel.

Me: has all these other wips for various fandoms
Also me: how about 17 year old Eva wins the 1xth hunger games for district 10 and meets jaded victors of previous games(Luca, Jack, Tommy, ocs, whatever) and seeing how fucked up the capitol is after implements Coryo's ideas.
Anyways here's the list
Luca being the d1 winner of some of the earlier games (game 8 or 9)and was plucked out of his life on the 11th games and made to mentor Angel for the 12th
Tommy wins 12th for d2 killed Angel to win
Jack was the victor for d5 on the 13th and had the most kills
Eva killed his brother by seducing him and getting him killed when they were in the final two on the 14th
The shelbys are covey members as stated in the tommy in thg headcanons(thanks @emotionalcadaver for sending me the link)
The rileys were involved in the rebellion, a lot were executed
Eva and her harem only meet up for game events
That's all i have lol i blame @justrainandcoffee and @call-sign-shark for thg!eva

WIP asks but it's just the various sections of my happy (???) beville (/angsty carraville) WIP
---
October, 2023.
Jamie is normally a punctual person, but when it comes to things organised by Gary he tries to be just on the wrong side of late, because he enjoys how fussy he gets about it. Unfortunately, today the traffic was against him and the drive over from Liverpool was an absolute breeze, so now he’s sat in the THG car park wondering if he should loiter for another half hour or just get over it and go in early.
He looks over at Gary’s car, for once parked neatly within the lines, and figures that’s as good a thing to tease him about as any so he might as well just go in.
“And look, look,” he hears Gary saying excitedly as he approaches the studio. “This one’s my seat, right, and then –”
“Where’m I? Next to you?”
“Ooh, steady on,” Gary says, and Jamie can hear the stupid little grin in his voice. “No, that’s Carragher’s spot, you’ll be in the middle. Better camera angle there, anyway.”
Jamie stops just before the double doors that lead on to set, leans against the wall and drops his head back with a dull thud. He’s not sure how he’d managed to forget, Gary’s been pestering the podcast group chat about it for weeks. ‘Remember we’ve got Becks on tomorrow, everyone (👀Jamie) on their best behaviour!!!’
“That’s next to Keaney, right?” he hears Beckham ask. “Then who’s on my other side, Jill or Wrighty?”
“Oh, that’ll be Jill. Wouldn’t want to separate Roy and Ian, they’re fantastic together. And Jill is so excited, y’know, you’re her hero.”
“Aw,” says Beckham, with a bashful little laugh, “hope I don’t disappoint. Bit crazy that, innit? I mean, she’s the one with a European championship under her belt.”
The two of them fall quiet for a moment, which Jamie reads as his opportunity to enter the room without interrupting. This, of course, is a mistake; clearly luck is not on Jamie’s side today. He slips quietly through the door and is going to walk over but stops in his tracks when he sees them.
Beckham’s got Gary pressed up against the counter, his hands spread wide on Gary’s hips and Gary’s arms looped around his neck. They’re not kissing, it might’ve been better if they were – instead they’re stood there, heads tilted in close but not quite close enough for their foreheads to touch, and they’re just talking to each other, voices too soft for Jamie to hear.
That’s not the bad part. The bad part is that Gary and Beckham are laughing at whatever stupid little inside joke they’re sharing, and the smile on Gary’s face isn’t one Jamie’s ever seen before. It’s like he’s glowing, and Jamie’s stomach churns with guilt at walking in on something that feels far more intimate than just kissing.
He’s debating whether he should turn around and leave, wait for one of the others to arrive and walk back in with them, when Gary looks over and catches his eye, his smile faltering. Beckham frowns at him in question, then looks over with a polite smile when Gary nods his head towards Jamie.
Jamie watches Beckham’s hand squeeze Gary’s hip for a moment before he takes a step back, shakes his head at Gary fondly and walks towards Jamie with an outstretched hand.
“Good to see you, Carra,” he greets, and dear god Jamie hates him.
He hates him, he hates him, he hates him.
Jamie shakes the offered hand with his most charming smile. “You too. ‘s been a while, eh?”
“It has, yeah, but you know our Gaz,” he says, looking behind him to shoot a grin at Gary. Gary at least has the decency to be looking at the floor in embarrassment, hands fidgeting. “He’s never liked having crossover between his work and social lives, has he?”
Jamie’s not sure when he was relegated to just ‘work friend’. Maybe he never got out of that category to begin with.
Recording the podcast is excruciating. David Beckham is just a bit too perfect, everyone loves him just a bit too much. Even Roy relaxes around him, lets his guard down. He almost smiles, once or twice. The nation’s sweetheart David fucking Beckham, still thought of as their beloved England captain even now, ten years out of the game.
David Beckham, saving the world one corny inspirational speech at a time. David Beckham, one of the best technical players Jamie’s ever seen, whose talents are so often ignored in favour of the fact that he’s David Beckham. David Beckham who never boasts, who’s flash without rubbing your face in it, who always has time for everyone he meets.
David Beckham, probably the most famous footballer of his generation, who looks at Gary Neville like he hung the moon and stars. Gary Neville.
It’s not fair. He could do better than him. He should have done better than him, found another superstar to shack up with and left the poor mortals alone. Maybe then Jamie would’ve had half a chance.
He just really hates David fucking Beckham.
