Why the Ten Duel Commandments is actually genius from a writing perspective.
okay @theonewithallthefixations SO!
(Sorry this got. LONG.)
The Ten Duel Commandments is fascinating from a writing perspective for a lot of reasons, because looking at it- Lin didn't have to do that part. It could've been an easily mentioned and forgotten line in a song, and he could've done something different, But he didn't, and this is why it's genuis-
A. Fantastic writing. It tells us all the rules of a duel, even little nuances ("Pick a place to die where it's high and dry!"). And while it does that, It takes us through the duel between Laurens and Lee.
B. It gives us another view on duels. Because we later see a duel from an outsider perspective (Phillip's Duel) and an dueler's perspective (Burr and Hamilton). But this one we see it from the perspective of a second. We see the duel without the main characters being in danger.
C. FORESHADOWING. Cause some people may have come into Hamilton knowing that he dies from a duel at the end, but maybe not everyone, and I doubt many knew that his son died in a duel. But by showing the duel between Laurens and Lee, we get foreshadowing with the setup of all the rules of a duel.
D. It sets us up for later (Yes this is different from foreshadowing). Like I said, it gives us the details, it gives us the rules. So then later, when we see Phillip's duel, it doesn't have to go back into those details as much. Which makes the reuse of the melody in The World Was Wide Enough hit that much harder, because we get reminded of all of them.
E. It shows the differences between the duels. It shows us the difference between Lee and Laurens, which doesn't seem as high stakes, and Hamilton and Burr, which, while it has the same melody, the differing words and using the melody again really really hammer down that this is higher stakes. This feels more important. there's something different about this one.

Bay/rise 34!! @brightlotusmoon @errorfreak88 @digitl-art-monstr @selfindulgenz @yarchurr @dakotafinely @yarchurr @sententiously-sarcastic @sprinklestheditty
“This is fucking stupid.” Raph was pacing anxiously, his frustrations coming out in the form of heavy breaths.
“I totally agree.” Donnie agreed, “But you know Leo. He’d not gonna let this go.”
“He he fucking ought to! We ain’t got time for this shit!”
The Leo’s were both separately getting ready for the spar, but with such an open space it was nearly impossible for them to get out of each other's line of sight. This resulted in what could only be described as a heated staring content between the both of them as they sharpened their katana and odachi almost passive-aggressively. The brothers and sister of both proud ninja were intermingled in a group together— their brothers’ antics weren’t enough to drive them apart completely, but it was enough for a wedge to be stuck between them.
“Is Leo gonna be okay?” Michelangelo appealed to Donatello, grabbing a hold of the older teens arm.
“I don’t know Michael.” Donatello sighed, sticking his nose in the air in his frustration, “Leon’s always getting himself in this kind of trouble! It’s gonna catch up to him eventually!”
“Hopefully not today.” Michelangelo said, looking to Leo. “Other Leo is very large. He’s jumbo sized!”
“Sadly, his brain didn't get the memo.”
Mikey was looking between both of the Leo’s with no small amount of guilt. Donnie had given him the clear after he had calmed slightly and the pain in his chest wasn’t so bad, but now the pain had been replaced with an intense sadness. Michelangelo nudged his brother and pointed to the sad box turtle, and then both brothers nodded at each other with similar intent as they marched over and each took a seat beside Mikey.
“Why the long face?” Michelangelo pouted.
“I dunno, Mike, seems kinda… oblong to me.” Donatello motioned vageuly to Mikey’s face.
Mikey gave the slightest chuckle before he started to cry softly. Michelangelo frowned and looked to Donatello, who quickly pulled a tissue from out of his battle shell and offered it to Mikey. Mikey accepted it and, after a moments thought, said,
“You just carry tissues around wherever?”
“I never know when I’ll have to break out the dramatics~!” Donatello struck a pose.
“Are you okay?” Michelangelo gave Mikey a gentle stroke on the shoulder. “You look sad.”
“I’m just… useless.” Mikey hung his head.
That statement caused both Hamato brothers to erupt in loud, overlaying denial as they practically swarmed Mikey trying to convince him otherwise.
“You’re not!”
“You’re really not.”
“You’re incredible!”
“I once tried nunchucks for a day. Hit myself in the head, cried in a corner, slept in said corner. Very traumatizing.”
“You can do lots of things!”
“Except fight, apparently…” Mikey pouted, crossing his arms. “I just watched my dad and your dad get taken and I did nothing!”
“You’re not the only one who did nothing!” Donatello offered.
Michelangelo swatted Donatello and scowled at him a second before turning back to Mikey. “You panicked— that’s nothing to be ashamed of!”
“We were there! We— we could’ve helped stop them! We—“
“What could we have done…?” Michelangelo asked softly, laying a hand on Mikey’s knee.
Mikey gave a long, tired sigh reminiscent of someone far older with many more years of life bearing down on his shoulders. “Nothing.”
“Exactly.” Michelangelo said, “But what we could’ve done is gotten hurt! He took out all your brothers in one swing! All we would’ve ended up doing is getting taken out with them.”
“But don’t you think—“
“Come on.” Mikey’s words were interrupted by his Leo, who had lost what little patience remained as he strutted forward with the confidence of gods. “Let’s get this over with.”
Leo was the first in the dojo and he stood there as if he was still challenging Leonardo to back down at the cost of his honor. Leonardo didn't move from his place where he was still polishing his odachi.
“Well?” Leo prompted, “Come on! You challenged me to this, remember! Don’t you want to defend your honor?”
Leonardo thought for a second, and then shrugged. “Eh, never really had much of that to begin with. And I have all the time in the world baby!”
Despite his words, Leonardo seemed to accept his counterpart's challenge and stood from his seated position, giving his odachi a few experimental swipes before he came to join Leo in the dojo.
“This ain’t gonna end good...” April shook her head. Her face was painted to match Leonardo’s markings and she brandished a blue flag in support. Upon seeing Leonardo entering the dojo, however, she promptly cheered, “WHOOP WHOOP! YOU GOT THIS LEON!”
The rest of the gathered mutants— all except Raphael, who was still sleeping off his exhaustion— gathered in a tight group to watch as the scene unfolded. Donnie split from the group one last time in an attempt to appeal to his brother.
“Leo, this is crazy!” Donnie said, but it was like talking to a wall, “You can’t fight him!”
“Why not?” Leo asked calmly without dignifying Donnie’s concern with even a glance.
“Well, one, he's a child.” Donnie deadpanned, “And two, we need to be focusing on finding Master Splinter.”
“Trust me Don, this isn’t gonna take very long.”
“What you gonna do, punt the fifteen year old?!”
“He’s the one who picked a fight.” Leo growled.
“Yeah. Oh course he did.” Donnie leaned closer to his brother and spoke slowly, as if Leo were dense, “He’s. A. Teenager. A dumb, confident teenager!”
“So are we.”
“We’re gonna be twenty next month— I hardly think it counts!”
Leo didn't respond. He stared forward with a determined look and simply walked away from Donnie, leaving his younger brother staring after him with a frustrated disbelief.
Leo faced his counterpart. “Do you know the duel rights?”
Leonardo shrugged almost cartoonishly.
“Of course not.” Leo sighed, then carried on, “Rule number one: The offending party has the right to an apology and, if it is accepted by the offended party, then the duel will not carry to term.”
“Okay, so you gonna apologize them?” Leonardo asked, almost hopefully.
Leo narrowed his eyes and gave no answer. “If there is no apology met, then the next rule of order is to choose a second. The seconds are the judges— they try to reach a peace, and if a peace is unable to be met, then we move onto phase three. My second is my brother Raphael.”
Raph grunted softly and split off from the group to hesitantly come to Leo’s side.
“Don, you feeling up to it?” Leonardo looked to his brother.
Donatello gave it a moment's thought before shrugging and sauntering off almost in a bored fashion to Leonardo’s side.
“How do we win?” Leonardo asked.
“To win, you must knock down your opponent and hold your blade to their throat. Rule number three! The seconds try to negotiate a peace.” Leo gave a nod, and Raph lumbered forward to meet Donatello in the middle. The two of them quickly fell to a hushed discussion.
“Hello.” Donatello said, his eyes half-lidded and his voice dull.
“Hey— can’t you just try and get your Leo to apologize?” Raph almost pleaded, “You know this ain’t exactly a fair fight.”
“I know.” Donatello replied with little enthusiasm. “Your Leo’s gonna get knocked flat on his Gluteus Maximus. That’s science terms for buttocks. Aka: ass.”
Raph gave a half-amused snort. “No offense, pancake, but I think we both know that ain’t right.”
“Oh wowwwwww, so original.” Donatello slumped, “I’m so hurt. Then again you do have a good point.
Raph smiled, thinning himself victorious until Donatello added,
“I mean, there’s nothing Maximus about his Gluteus.” Donatello motioned to Leo with his thumb.
“No—” Raph growled and forced a smile as he addressed Donatello with slow words, “What I meant was that your brother is gonna end up with the same fate as a firework on Fourth of July.” He made an explosion motion and added his own sound effects, “I mean— come on! It’s like a dodge against a semi-truck— your bro stands no chance!”
“I think we can stand to disagree on that.” Donatello defended his brother calmly.
Raph fixed Donatello with a deadpan expression. “You’re not gonna back down are you?”
“Negatory.” Donatello finally smiled— little more than a slight curve of his lips, but still a smile. “Or way— would that be an affirmative? Eh. Doesn’t matter. Either way I believe we are done here.”
Without another word, he spun on his heels and carried himself confidently over to his brother’s side. Raph grumbled as he often did before taking his leave a few seconds after. There was a minute of stressful silence as both seconds reported to their brothers before Leo stepped forward again.
“Rule four. Draw your weapon only once there is a medic on sight with his back turned.”
Leonardo whistled. “I mean, not that I couldn’t beat you with my back turned, but seriously?”
“Not you.” Leo growled, “Donnie will be our medic on standby.” Leo motioned the tech genius to turn around, and Donnie hesitantly obeyed. This left only the Mikey’s watching. Once Leo was satisfied, he went on, “Rule five would usually include dueling at dawn, but I hardly think it matters down here.”
Leonardo looked up at the high ceiling and then down at Leo.
“Rules six and seven are also moot given our particular circumstances. Unless you have a god you pray to…?”
“Eh, some may describe me as a God, but I think I forgive myself for my sins~”
It took everything Leo had to keep his cool. “Rule number eight. Your last chance to set the record straight.”
“Hey! That rhymed! Good for you!”
“Wait are you just getting these from the Hamilton Musical?” Donatello started to ask, but was interrupted; even as Leo spoke over him, he still continued to talk until he finished the sentence.
“Rule number nine! Look your enemy in the eye.” He and Leonardo locked gazes, “Meet your enemy in the middle…”
Leonardo and Leo took four paces each until they were directly in front of each other.
“Summon your courage in any way necessary.” Leo said cooly, giving a bow that Leonardo returned, “Take a minute to breathe, then take ten paces back.”
The Leo’s were almost in perfect sync as they took their paces backward, now several paces behind their seconds while still facing each other.
“Ready your sword…”
Twin katana and a single odachi were held at the ready.
“Take one final breath…”
No one in the room breathed.
“And count to ten. One… two… three… four...”
“...five...six…seven… eight... nine...”
“Ten.”

Musical Tryouts (1/31/2021)
Please pretend I posted this chat log a month and a half ago when it actually happened, sob.
Valera @autokrates is leaving an audition for Hell’s first production of Hamilton, and runs into Alastor, waiting for his turn to audition. They hang out and chat until it’s his turn—which marks the first time in forever they’ve had a full conversation that wasn’t Incredibly Awkward the whole way through. Hooray for progress.
Chronologically, this chat log happened between this (note: art of extremely hilarious outfit) and this (note: art of another hilarious outfit)
Alastor
Alastor hasn’t auditioned for a show since the seventies, and hasn’t auditioned and *cared* about it in almost a century. He’d like to think he doesn’t look nervous, but he knows he’s reread his typewritten lyrics about a hundred times and every couple of minutes he catches his leg bouncing again. That’s fine, he’s in disguise, he isn’t supposed to look like himself anyway. He can look a little nervous.
When he realizes he’s more staring a hole through his pages than actually reading them, he forces himself to lift his head, slouches back in his cheap metal chair, and looks around the makeshift backstage waiting room. Maybe he can figure out if anyone else is trying for his parts, drag them into the back alley, and mangle them. It would defeat the purpose of showing up in disguise, but it would burn some nervous energy, and anyway he’s already seen one would-be Angelica pin another down and slit her throat. His gaze scans over the other hopeful actors.
Valera
From the stage comes the muffled sound of someone singing, as expected. But the singing gets louder as the voice approaches the door, and it certainly sounds like Not A Musical Number. It sounds a lot more like someone who needed to be accompanied by someone torturing a piano with a series of small hammers. Was that a Will Wood number? Why yes, yes it was!
Through the curtains and round the corner comes the fish supreme, bedecked in enough frills and frippery to lose an orphan in with their 18th century french fashion, belting out lines from I/Me/Myself as they saunter towards the exit with barely a glance for the other hopefuls waiting for their call. Barely a glance at all, until their eyes land on Alastor. Then their jaunty tune is cut off with an uncanny impression of a record scratch crossed with a chicken being strangled, head whipping around for a double take as they freeze mid stride. Holy fuck what was he WEARING???
Alastor
Alastor’s ears threatened to perk up beneath his temporarily shapeshifted hair at the sound of a very familiar and very beloved song from another performer—he’d almost considered performing that one himself, God was he lucky he’d decided to go with “Modern Major General”—and he turned to see who it was with the spectacular taste in music—
“Valera?!” What the hell was Valera doing at a musical audition in Hell?
Valera
It WAS Alastor! They KNEW it! They gasp, pointing at him as their eyes boggle. "Al--" And just as quickly, a hand is clapped over their own mouth, teeth clicking as they clamp their mouth shut. Okay, try that again, *without* ruining his disguise.
They stride over to where he's sitting, leaning in slightly before hissing. "What are you WEARING?"
Alastor
Alastor plays the sound of something crashing over when Valera starts to say his name—the other waiting performers look around to see which props just toppled over—and hops out of his seat to meet Valera in the middle when they approach him. “Do *not* expose me,” he hisses, flinging an arm around Valera’s shoulders. “Nobody here knows I’m the Radio Demon and if this is going to work, nobody *can* know.”
Then he looks down at his own outfit. “A disguise.” Obviously. “I asked my listeners, ‘What’s the last thing you’d ever expect me to wear?’”
Valera
Oh, great, he's touching them AND he's already mad at them for something they'd already avoided. This seemed like par for the course, might as well get through this as painlessly as possible. Valera's face tightens into a stiff little smile, stomach already twisting into knots. "I've got no plans of exposing you, it would be a shame to ruin the work you put into your... outfit."
A slow exhale from the nose, and they force their shoulders to relax. Can't have the other actors see the two of them at odds, they're clearly just a couple of friends running into each other! A funny coincidence! Their voice raises back to a normal speaking tone, all sunshine and cheer as they give Alastor a pat on the back that falls short of actually touching him. "I take it you're here to audition for a part, then?"
Alastor
Alastor wheezes a near-silent laugh. “Isn’t it hideous?” he whispers. “You should see what the full leggings look like, they’re horrible.”
He lets go and steps back. “I am! I was seized by a wild burst of inspiration, and auditions happened before that inspiration ran out. I take it you... *already* auditioned.” Which raises a whole slew of questions, but Alastor starts with the most important one: “Which part?”
Valera
Valera sends up a silent prayer of thanks to any God listening, hands folding behind their back as they admire Alastor's grotesque attire. "Unfortunately, I kind of love it. It's vile, but with a few tweaks it could be a genuinely good outfit."
They clear their throat at his latter question, rolling back on the heels of their new shoes. "Washington. I didn't come to Hell today expecting to audition for anything, I was just here buying shoes. But I heard music, saw the theater, decided to pop in and see what was going on. And hey, why not try out? Didn't expect to run into you of all people."
Alastor
A little tension drains out of his shoulders at the answer. He glances down to idly check out Valera’s new shoes. “Oh, good! I don’t have to duel you for a part.” He almost instinctively starts playing a snip from “Ten Duel Commandments” to underline the comment, but catches himself. He is, after all, trying not to blow his cover—he’s even consciously suppressing the radio distortion to his voice, he nearly sounds like a normal person. “The feeling’s *entirely* mutual. You’re about the last person I’d expect to try out for a show around here, so far from home!”
And he’s not sure how he feels about it yet. He’s been trying to avoid talking to Valera—can’t get in trouble after interacting with them if they *don’t* interact, can he?—and now here he is doing the opposite of that... but they haven’t started another stupid argument. Yet. “What are you doing if you actually get the part? You’re committing to being in Pentagram City on a near daily basis for—goodness, months at least!”
Valera
They don't know how they feel about seeing him here either. It went from being a fun little spur of the moment tryout before icecream into an UNEXPECTED INTERACTION with A PERSON THEY DON'T KNOW WELL. But no, they have to tamp down on the urge to make their excuses and leave, things would never improve between them if Valera did nothing but avoid him after all.
"IF I get the part! I haven't been in a production in years, I'm rusty compared to plenty of the actors here today, I'm sure." A hand waves, lazy and dismissive. "But if I do pull it off, I've been planning on spending more time in Hell anyway. This is just a convenient excuse."
Alastor
“Hah, I haven’t tried out for a show since—well, since before you were born.” And then, he’d just been doing it as a lark, too—something to attempt to keep his mind occupied. He hadn’t actually *wanted* to be in a production this badly since he lived in New York, before he gave up on making it on Broadway and went into radio. “But how many of *them* can launch into a full musical number at the drop of a hat!”
Valera
Right, it was easy to forget that Alastor was old enough to be their dad. Or Grandpa. Probably? They'd done the math at some point..
"Hatched." They correct on reflex, reaching up to fuss with the feather on their hat. "Who are you trying for? Lafayette? I could see you as a Lafayette." They're saying it because of the French, but they will NOT say that out loud.
Alastor
Great-grandpa, easily. Maybe even great-great grandpa if a few generations got early starts.
His face brightens. “Let’s hope the casting director thinks so, too! Yes, Lafayette and Jefferson—the same actor played them both in the mortal realm, why shouldn’t one person play both down here, too?”
Valera
Great-grandpa Alastor, the spryest old man in the nursing home. Eating the interns when he gets bored... That sounds like a typical older Veci actually.
They hum, looking Alastor up and down in his getup. "You'll get the part, or I'll eat this silly chapeu. I've seen the competition you're up against. They're good, don't get me wrong, but..." A vague gesture at him. "Nobody could compete!"
Alastor
"You flatter me!" All the same, he's beaming widely. "But I was hoping that would be the case, what with when they scheduled auditions. January's a bad time for, well, *most* people's schedules. I'm afraid I missed all but the tail end of your performance—spectacular choice of song, though!"
Valera
"Why thank you! Will Wood doesn't fit the show's theme in the slightest, but it certainly shows my singing chops! Though if I'd planned for this audition I might have gone with an outfit a bit less.. *French*." They grin, shimmying their enormous sleeves. Unrepentant in the slightest. "Might. I could see Washington's doughy self in this getup."
Alastor
Alastor examines Valera’s getup. Was that French? It just looked old-fashioned to him. “Well, hopefully they’re not going to judge based on fashion!” He glances pointedly down at his own outfit.
Valera
Another glance at his outfit, and they give a thumbs up. "You've got a bowtie on, you'll be fine."
Oh. Would it be a supportive friend thing to do to sit and wait for his call with him? Or would that be somehow rude? They couldn't just ask, if it *was* rude he'd probably be offended by the notion, but if it wasn't... Something bad. Probably? Maybe they're being unfair. A quick clearing of the throat, and they gesture towards the door. "Do you want to sit down? I've got time to kill before. Uh... *Mon Cerf Rouge* arrives with my ice cream."
Alastor
*Oh right*, he’s wearing *Valera’s husband’s* bow tie. His hand flies up to cover it as if that will prevent it from being identified, and he quickly forces his hand back down. “Well! I wasn’t going to show up to an audition underdressed, was I?” He laughs thinly. Don’t act suspicious it’s fine.
Is Valera hanging out with another Alastor? He wonders which one. How is it that every version of himself manages to get along with them but him? It wouldn’t be so galling if *none* of them could get along with Valera, but if it’s something he uniquely is doing wrong—no, don’t worry about that right now.
His first inclination is to turn down the offer, they’ve had a cordial conversation so far and he can’t mess it up if it ends right here; but there’s a chance they’re about to both end up in the same show, isn’t there? Polite avoidance might not be an option for long. Better get to work on getting along. “Sure! It’s a bit yet until my turn.”
Valera
What a reaction! They will politely pretend they didn't see him have a miniature panic over being seen wearing Pentious' bowtie. Far too busy inspecting their gloves, for some reason. How convenient.
Well, now they've done it, they're stuck here. Though it's surprising he accepted the offer, maybe it'll be okay? If he really wanted to avoid them he could have turned the offer down. They're probably overthinking it. A quick nod, and then they perch on the edge of a seat so their fuckoff huge tail can actually fit amidst the mounds of ruffles. On the plus side, nobody but Alastor was going to be taking the seats next to them anytime soon, unless they wanted to fight the tide of frills.
Time to.. Get along? Polite chit chat? "Is this the first production of Hamilton in Hell? It's a fairly new musical, and I know there's a bit of a delay getting things down here."
Alastor
“The very first! In fact, this production company is the one that got the first recording smuggled down from the living realm! Online there’s a few amateur recordings of recent arrivals singing the songs they remember, but so far that’s the only presence Hamilton has had in Hell. Anyone who gets in this show has an opportunity to *define* their roles in the eyes of the public.” Oh, he’s getting a little starry-eyed just thinking of it. “I suppose you’ve probably seen the original production in the mortal realm?”
Valera
"I did, though that was long before I met you or I'd have invited you along!" They're going to take the hat off, it's very silly and the feather keeps floating around in the corner of their vision. Plus, now they have something to hold in their hands so they can't start doing anything weird with them. Win win!
Alastor seems genuinely excited about this production, he'd gone through all the effort to get an outfit, come for tryouts.. And they just sauntered in on a whim. Thank the gods they weren't trying out for the same part, Valera would have had to bow out immediately. "I wonder if any of the actual founding fathers have survived long enough down here to see the show. Wouldn't *that* be something?"
Alastor
“Wouldn’t it just! I can’t think of *anything* I’d enjoy more than prancing around on stage making Jefferson look like an absolute damn fool while the real deal seethes in a front row seat!” He laughs. It’s not a terribly friendly laugh. “But I don’t know if any are down here. I don’t pay close attention to that sort of thing—and anyway, most *important* people who end up damned either find themselves on the receiving end of a deluge of assassination attempts or else change their identities fairly fast. A founding father could show up and audition to play as himself and we might not know.” A thoughtful pause. “Although I doubt any of them would get the part.”
Valera
"I'd assume they wound up here, considering the whole owning slaves and starting wars thing. Good PR post mortem doesn't absolve you of shitty behaviors in life, unfortunately." Yes. Very unfortunate. That's why they're grinning so toothily. "Imagine if we got the actual King George on the roster? Though I'd rather see Pentious try for the part, personally." There's no way George was still around, he'd gone batty enough in life that he'd probably wandered onto the nearest angelic spear first thing. But they could dream!
Alastor
“One would hope! But no one’s ever sent me the rule book on what does and doesn’t get you access upstairs, who knows for sure? I can tell you what I think *should* get you down here, but I can’t tell you with complete certainty whether or not it does.”
Oh, his eyes light up at that. “Just imagine him in the full raiment of a king! But no. Getting up on stage to have hundreds of people laugh at him for dressing and acting like royalty? He’d hate it.”
Valera
"He'd look glorious in a crown! But you're right, he'd never want a comic relief role, even if he WOULD get to sing about sending battalions after people." Alas and alack, King George ala Pentious would have to live in their dreams. But they smirk, leaning a fraction closer to Alastor to whisper. "But we might be able to get him to sing it privately, at least, and wouldn't that be lovely?"
Quickly pulling back, they cross one leg over the other and put on that cheerful grin again. "What do you think *should* qualify to send people to Hell, my fine fellow? It's a broad question, so we can skip it if you'd rather not open that can of worms."
Alastor
Wouldn’t it be lovely, indeed. He smiles uncomfortably and glances away.
“Oh, skip it.” He waves a hand vaguely. “I find the topic as sanctimonious as it is futile. It may not be for *you*, perhaps—for you, it’s little more than an interesting thought experiment on alien morality—but for us? What’s the good of debating why people should be damned when we’re *already* damned? It’s not going to help us get out of Hell. God isn’t going to take our suggestions into consideration. All the topic does is make one bitter that the powers that be don’t appear to be judging people to one’s personal moral standards—or else it inspires one to assume that God *is* operating in line with one’s personal understanding of justice, and try to pigeonhole everyone one meets into the crimes one believes are worthy of damnation. I’ve run into countless people down here who *don’t know why* they’re damned—and yet they *are* damned, which means they’ve done something that *is* damnable even if they themselves don’t believe it. If people can’t understand their own sins, how can they be trusted to judge anyone else’s?”
Valera
They lean back as Alastor skips one can of worms for another, watching him as he broke down his reasoning. It was interesting, insightful, even if they didn't have much to say to him in response. He was right, after all. For them it was an alien concept, a novelty to roll around and discard when they were bored, just like so many other human notions. But not everyone was so lucky. A nod of agreement, and they flick their tail.
"You're right. My apologies, Alastor, it's easy to forget how... fortunate I am, to be in the position I'm in." A side eye at the other actors, who PROBABLY couldn't hear the conversation, but even so. "Something lighter, then. Have you had a chance to work on restoring your deathday gift yet? You did a fine job with Alexander, he's as glossy as the day you *finished* him."
Alastor
“Oh, that’s just to be expected. How many people have a chance to measure their lives up against the dead and damned, anyway? We’re not given opportunities to interact with anyone but our fellow prisoners and our jailers, and that’s by design.” He’s occasionally side-eyeing the other actors himself, but none seem to be paying attention.
“Oh—yes! Cleaned out the guts and got off the worst of the grime of age. I need to get a few cleaning supplies to finish the job, but soon the both of them will be spick and span!” Look at him beaming, the proud father. “How *is* Alexander? I wanted to talk to him while visiting your place, but his time seemed to be monopolized by someone else the whole trip!” He really did feel bad about that. He feels like he’s got something a duty to Alexander, but so far he hasn’t been able to meet it.
Valera
This was a MUCH better topic. Radios and mutual friends, much safer. They let their shoulders relax under the jacket, chirping as their fins waggle. "I'm sure they'll be as good as new by the time you're done with them, mon collègue. You'll have to show me how they come out. A beautiful antique is always twice as radiant when restored with care, and those radios were gorgeous."
Ah.. Alexander. Their face twists, a frown tugging at the corners of their mouth. "Alexander is.. alright, I suppose. Nothing terrible has happened, and I've been trying to work with him on his manifestations with generally mixed to positive results." They shrug, sighing through their nose. "I think he misses other humans. Or former humans, I suppose. We get along well, but he'll see something and start talking about.. Ponzi? Or his mother writing to him from the" Airquotes here as they squint "Dust Bowl?" What the fuck is a dust bowl? They don't know, it sounds like something a chinchilla would roll in. "And he loses me completely."
Alastor
“I’ll have Vaggie take pictures some time.”
Alastor’s eyebrows shoot up. “That poor man got tangled up with Ponzi *and* the dust bowl? Goodness, what an unfortunate life he lived! But you’re right, he really needs more humans to talk to, doesn’t he? I’ll—“ A pause, and then he says thoughtfully, “I’ll see whether I can contact him myself. If not, I’ll let you know and we’ll arrange a play date. If it works, though—you’ll probably hear about it from him.”
Valera
Contact Alexander himself? Valera opens their mouth to ask how, then it clicks. Right, radio to radio transmissions. Could Alastor reach radios outside of Hell? Maybe it would be easier if the radio was haunted, a bit closer to the fuzzy boundaries between Heaven, Hell, and Earth. Or, Okkylk in this case. Hm.
"I'll take your word for it, I haven't got the foggiest about what either of those are. What the *devil* is a Ponzi?" They've heard "Ponzi Scheme" said in movies, but maybe it wasn't even the same Ponzi! Maybe Ponzi was a normal human thing. Like a brand, they do love their brands... "But thank you. I think he'd benefit from having more than one very alien being to talk to."
Alastor
“Charles Ponzi! A con artist! He convinced a whole slew of people to give him a mountain of money to invest in what he claimed was some post office money-making scheme and that he’d double their money in a month or two. Instead, he pocketed the money, convinced *another* slew of people to give him money for the same scheme, used that money to pay off the first wave of suckers—and rinse and repeated until he’d scammed thousands and stolen millions! Spent a few years in prison, got out and tried another scheme, got arrested in dear old New Orleans trying to flee the country! You knew you weren’t going to be bored any time he showed up in the papers!” Alastor loves a good con artist story. “The Dust Bowl, I missed myself—just a little bit after my time—but from my understanding it was a big drought in the middle of the States that dried out a bunch of farmland. Lot of farming families starved those years.” Alastor loves a good con artist, but starving people are just sad.
Valera
This Ponzi guy should have gone into politics, hot damn. Valera makes a low whistle, nodding their approval. "That DOES explain why he thought about Ponzi, we were talking about the weird political scams my predecessor left me on the hook for when I snuffed him out. Though I think that Charles there pulled it off with more flair than that bird brain ever could have. What a character! I've got to respect that kind of daring."
Probably best not to comment too much on the dust bowl, that sounds like a downer. But, they did bring it up, and if they're talking about Alexander.. "That does explain it. I believe his family was based in that middle area." A nod, and they immediately jump to something less negative. "Let him prattle on at you about his electronics store, he'd love it. The man talked my fins off for twenty minutes about something called a Perikon Detector a regular asked him to order and I STILL don't understand why he was so exasperated about it."
Alastor
“Oh, did he ever have flair! There’s a story I heard about when news of his scams started hitting the papers—all his investors swarmed his offices to demand their money back, he went around to them one by one offering coffee and donuts and smiles, and charmed them so well they *left* their money with him!” Alastor laughs.
Perikon Detector? Alastor stares off into space a moment, trying to dig the term out of nearly-century-old memories. “... Probably because Perikon Detectors were replaced by vacuum tubes before ninety percent of the nation ever even *heard* of radios. What the hell did someone want a Perikon Detector?”
Valera
They laugh, clapping their hands together. Charles Ponzi, was it? They'd have to look the fellow up later just to see the details of his escapades, maybe forward the information to a certain lawyer they knew. But for now, their potential costar has been oddly silent..
Alastor in a state of blank befuddlement was a rare treat, and one that Valera enjoyed while they could before he seemed to snap back into focus with his scrabbled knowledge in hand. "You'll have to ask him for specifics, but judging by the choice of insults, this person had a habit of asking for obscure, outdated parts rather frequently. Maybe a collector? Upcycler?" They shrug. "I still have no idea what a Perikon Detector IS. It sounds like a little bauble they'd use in a bad sci-fi show."
Alastor
“Well, it detects perikons, obviously!” He pauses. Dead silence. “Right, forgot I gave the laugh track the afternoon off. You at least know what vacuum tubes are, right? They, uh...” Has Alastor ever actually learned what it is, *exactly,* that vacuum tubes do. He knows how to use them. He knows how to tell which one he needs. He’s put them in radios. He’s *made* radios. But his eyes glaze over whenever he tries to learn what exactly it is the electricity *does* in there.
“Well,” he says confidently, “they control electrons, you see. You’re not getting very far in electronics if you can’t control electrons.” There’s a smattering of laughter. “Shut up, you’re all on break. Anyway, you’ve got vacuum tube radios and crystal radios—there’s a crystal in a Perikon Detector, see—and vacuum tube radios actually need some electricity to power them—which means you’ve got enough electricity to also power a speaker. Crystal radios are powered only by the very radio waves they pick up, but you’ve got to squeeze headphones against your face to hear it—so not very useful if you want to use a radio while doing anything but sitting in one spot very quietly with your hands over your ears. A Perikon Detector is just one brand name of crystal detectors that pick up radio waves.”
Valera
Alastor's initial joke is delivered, and Valera rather wished it hadn't been. In fact, they'd like to file a formal complaint with the verbal post office, they seem to have delivered an auditory assault instead of pleasantries. Silence reigns between them, oppressive and all consuming like an unjust monarch, three eyes staring silent judgement at the Radio Demon for his awful, terrible, no good dad joke levels of comedy. Jingle the bells on your little jester hat, old man-- Oh wait, he's talking again.
Valera stops squinting, rolling their eyes with a groan. He's still telling bad jokes. Those are only funny when YOU'RE the one telling them, the bastard. But they're going to completely gloss over his evil sense of humor and focus on the technical talk, and if there's a little upward twitch of their lips it's his imagination. Shut up. Dad jokes aren't funny. "Interesting! I'd never even heard of a crystal radio before, humans upgrade their technology so quickly that it makes the mind reel. One of their.. Your? Finer features."
Alastor
Alastor is goddamn hilarious and a gift to the microphone and the world is better for him and his humor having been in it, if we’re not counting those murders he did. “It *is* one of our more impressive parlor tricks! Although, truth be told, only one we picked up in the last century or so!” A pause. “Last *two* centuries. I keep forgetting the 1820s aren’t a hundred years ago. Anyway, we’ve really picked up the pace lately, relatively speaking! I once heard someone say—I don’t know how he knows, but I’m sure someone looked it up—that for several thousand years, the human *pelvis* evolved faster than the plowshare! And then all of the sudden, boom! Factories! Steel! Trains! Airships! Radio! How did people before the nineteenth century not bore themselves to death, I’ll never know.”
Valera
Valera cocks their head to the side, mind casting back. "From what I recall about sixteen hundreds France from my earliest visits, there was a lot of interpersonal drama and dying from preventable diseases to keep people busy. Much less interesting than the industrial revolution. Though the water was also a lot *cleaner* back then." A dissatisfied scoff. "Late eighteen hundreds London was a foul, foul place. Only went once and I had a cough for a week."
Alastor
"Oh, *that's* right! *Human drama!* Entertainment at its purest! I would have been an insufferable gossip, I'm sure." His smile broadens with satisfaction at figuring out what he would have done before radio.
Valera
"Oh don't sell yourself short, Alastor. I'm sure given the chance, you could be an insufferable gossip now, too!" They flutter their lashes dramatically, fanning themselves with their hat as they titter like a fine court damsel. Okay, enough of that. "They should be calling you soon, no?"
Alastor
“You flatter me! If more people shared gossip with me, I *would* be!”
Oh, right. He’s here for the first audition he’s cared about since dying. He sits up a little straighter, ears almost lifting out of his absurd disguise hair as he strains to listen to the current audition on stage. Sounds like it’s wrapping up. “Probably.” He looks down at his printed lyrics again and, predictably, forgets how to read.
Valera
Valera glances at Alastor's paper, humming as their hands rest on their hat. Was he *nervous*?
"Are you nervous?" Wait they said that out loud didn't they. Well, shit. Better commit. "What did you say you were doing again? The Major General's Song?"
Alastor
He's gonna ignore the hell out of that first question. "Yes, Modern Major General—and I learned a couple of songs from the show, more or less. I don't know what they're going to ask for. I figured at a minimum Modern Major General would show I can sing fast enough for the parts, if they don't want anyone to sing from the show."
Valera
If he'd actually answered the question, Valera would have probably accused him of being an imposter. Alastor wasn't known for admitting to his emotions unless you happened to be a Victorian steampunk snake, and even then. A sigh, and they lean back in their seat as much as their tail allows. "They let me sing Will Wood, so I think your selection should be perfectly sufficient. You even went with another musical theater song!"
Valera
Even then, he only just sort of failed to deny straightforward accusations. Kind of like what he just did. "I'm glad I didn't go with Will Wood," he mutters.
Yep, there's no more singing or talking from the stage, they're definitely wrapping up. Any second now.
Valera
It sounds like Alastor's turn is coming up, and good timing on that. They had no idea how to respond to his mutterings beyond pointing out that no casting director in Hell was likely to have heard of a semi obscure avant-garde jazz musician. Which might not even be accurate, maybe he was popular down here.
Out comes the phone, the ultimate distraction to ignore a potentially awkward silence. Better to end the talk on a positive-ish note, considering they're going to be seeing this garishly dressed man on the daily for possibly months. Sit next to one Alastor, text another, barely suppress snorts when the second gets confused about "phish food" being an ice cream flavor. As a fish does.
Alastor
The most recent actor comes backstage again, and another demon calls, “Next, uh... Lass?”
Alastor hops to his feet. “That’s me! That’s my name.” He turns to Valera. “Stage name. Drag name, usually, but as long as I’ve got the hair and the dress today—Anyway!” He claps a hand on Valera’s shoulder. “Tell me to break a leg!”
Valera
They glance up from their phone at the name call, sliding their eyes back down as Alastor hops up. Off he goes then? Maybe not, he's talking now, they should respond--
They make a very undignified BWAGH at the unexpected touch, hat flying off their lap as their whole body jumps. Then immediately pretends it didn't happen, clearing their throat noisily. What? No, they didn't just jump out of their scales. "Break a leg, Alastor."
Alastor
*Wheeze.* He doesn’t apologize but he *does* quickly take his hand back, which is probably as close as they’re gonna get from him. “Thanks!” He startled the hell out of someone and got a quick laugh out of it, that does something to steady his nerves. He folds up his lyrics, tucks them away god-only-knows-where, and strides out. Showtime!
Valera
Valera watches him go, shaking their head as they stand. Well, that's one radio demon out of their hair. Time to go willingly throw themselves at another one! The hat is plucked off the floor, and off they go. Not too shabby a day, not too shabby at all.

HAMILTON'S BIRTHDAY HISTORY POST
Today on January 11th Hamilton was born in Charleston, Nevis.
Overview:
Born into poverty, Hamilton faced many struggles in his life. A hurricane destroyed his home at the age of 17, at the age of 11 he began working at a counting house as a clerk. When he was roughly 19 Hamilton journeyed to America (New York) under the financial aid of Henry Livingston. He met his friends such as Hercules Mulligan and John Laurens in New York and in his early years at war. He also met Marquis de Lafayette in war. Laurens, Laffayete and Hamilton had been referred to as the Gay Trio by Washington’s Nephew. He later became a prominent political figure and fighter in the revolution. He is known for his lasting effects on our government and Financial system.
Revolutionary War and Washington:
In the american revolutionary war Hamilton served as Washington’s Aide-de-camp for the longest time. His Military Stances; Major General and Lieutenant Colonel in the continental army with allegiance to New York and The US. he served in the battle of Yorktown, commanding a battalion that stormed redoubt 9. The battles he served in notably are: Battle of Harlem Heights, Battle of White Plain, Battle of Trenton, Battle of Princeton, Battle of Brandywine, Battle of Germantown, Battle of Monmouth, and The Siege of Yorktown. Hamilton was a son-like figure to Washington although it took a long time to finally allow Hamilton to fight in a battle and command a battalion.
Political Career:
Hamilton began his political career shortly after the war ended. He wrote the federalist papers with James Madison and John Jay, served as a lawyer often defending wrongly treated british people. He attended and participated in the constitutional convention, signed the constitution, and served in Washington’s Cabinet as Secretary of Treasury. He also drafted and ended up creating the financial and banking system used today. He was known for his feuds with Thomas Jefferson and his tendency to endorse a government that many feared would end up like Britain. Hamilton could be referred to as the Nancy Pelosi of his time. He held great power and influence, however he was more disliked than liked at the time. He made important decisions and knew the leaders of the country well, but would never be able to hold the presidency due to the fact that he was unelectable. He had most of the Democratic-Republicans against him and even members of his own party disliked him. (Recognize the name John Adams?) He was widely popular in both good and bad ways and did heavily influence the young nation, but there were things Hamilton simply could do.
Children and Family History:
Born to James Hamilton and Rachel Faucett Lavine. His parents divorced in roughly 1758. Shortly after James left to live on his own leaving Rachel to set up a small shop to provide for her sons. He had a brother named James too. Rachel died in 1768, leaving him a technical orphan with no contact to his father.
In roughly December 14, 1780 - July 12, 1804 he married Elizabeth Schyler
His children include; Philip, Alexander, Angelica, James Alexander, John Church, William, Eliza, Philip (Yes there were two)
His relatives included Philip Schyler, Angelica Schyler Church, and Margarita “Peggy” Schyler.
The Fatal Duel:
On July 11th, Burr and Hamilton met on the Weehawken river on the New Jersey side. Burr’s second was William P. Van Ness, while Hamilton's was Nathaniel Pendleton. There was a doctor present as it was custom for duels. The intent was to keep the duel a secret so they left separate docks. From early letters describing the duel it was clear Hamilton intended to throw away his shot and end the duel with both men still living. However, when it came to the duel Hamilton did not traditionally (and debatably correctly) Delope. Normally the parson would aim and shoot the ground, Hamilton aimed skyward and ended up shooting a tree behind Burr. Burr acted in panic and turned to shoot Hamilton, delivering the fatal blow. Hamilton died the next day.
Life and Legacy:
Hamilton had both ideas and initiative. He was willing to go through on his ideas, all of which were directed at a goal. He was ambitious, headstrong, and a hard worker. He demonstrated gratitude, moral principle and was good natured while also being impulsive, arrogant and jealous which created the interesting life he had. Known for Establishing the Financial System of America and the Reynolds Pamphlet and Affair, Hamilton is truly one of the most interesting founding fathers. And today 264-266 years ago, He was born.

- the minute General Charles Les came into the picture i hated him so hard, even though his literal first word was ‘Whee!!!!’, though i can appreciate the sentiment and what LMM was tryna do there
- “Washington cannot be left to his devices indescisive, from crisis to crisis” — sweet baby jesus that alliteration, and jon rua totally pulled it off (i hate General Charles Lee not the person who played him, i can also appreciate the fact that as an actor it takes a lot of talent to be able to make you hate a character so easily, also shoutout to Jonathan Groff as King Georgey-Boy™️, Sydney James Harcourt as james reynolds, and the general way LMM somehow made me fed up/turn on Alexander with the whole scene with him and Maria Reynolds — and not only that but somehow redeemed himself to me which is easier said than done for characters and people alike.. i’ve been hurt too much to play like that.
- Act 1: 15. Ten Duel Commandments
- honorable mention: “if you don’t reach peace, that’s alright. time to get some pistols and a doctor on site. you pay him in advance, you treat him with civility. you have him turn around so he can have deniability.”
- Act 1: 17. That Would Be Enough
- honorable mention: the melody that LMM went with for that turn of phraseis a truly beautiful thing
- “Immigrants:” — “We get the job done.”
- THE FACT THAT MY MAIN MAN HERCULE MULLIGAN WAS ON THE INSIDE NOT ONLY DID I CALL IT BUT DAMN HE REALLY GOT THAT GOOD HOT TRIBUTE HE DESERVED
- “To my brother’s a revolutionary covenant! I’m runnin’ with the sons of liberty and I am lovin’ it! See, that’s what happens when you up against the ruffians. We’re in the shit now, somebody gotta shovel it! Hercules Mulligan, I need no introduction, when you knock me down I get the fuck back up again!”
- Act 1: 21. What Comes Next
- honorable mention: “i’m so blue” — the little squat that Groffsauce does as the light turns blue really got to me
- Act 1: 22. Dear Theodosia
- Leslie Odom Jr.’s voice is so ding dang delightfully airy
- honorable mention: “You have my eyes. You have your mother’s name. When you came into the world, you cried and it broke my heart.”
- Act 1: 23. Non-Stop
- as someone with siblings i can appreciate that they’re bickering like that’s just what they are
- “I was chosen for the constitutional convention! *squeal*”
- “Burr, we studied and we fought and we killed for the notion of a nation we now get to build. For once in your life, take a stand with pride. I don’t understand how you stand to the side.”
- Act 2: 1. What’d I Miss?
- honorable mention: “But the sun comes up and the world still spins.”
- Act 2: 2. Cabinet Battle #1
- honorable mention: “DOIN’ WHATEVER THE HELL IT IS YOU DO IN MONTICELLO!”
- tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow
- “Daddy, daddy, look.... My name is Philip. I am a poet. I wrote this poem just to show it. And I just turned nine. You can write rhymes but you can’t write mine.” - “What!” - “I practice French and play piano with my mother.” — “Uh-huh!” — “I have a sister but I want a little brother.” — “Okay!” — “My daddy’s trying to start America’s bank. Un deux trois quatre cinq!” — “Bravo!” — “Hey, our kid is pretty great.”
- as much as i hate Act 2: 4. Say No To This (because for some reason i though Alexander Hamilton was better than that) Jasmine Cephas Jones sings in it is like a hot knife through butter — namely; “My husband’s doin’ me wrong beatin’ me, cheatin’ me, mistreatin’ me...”... I guess maybe I understand it ‘cause damn Jasmine Cephas Jones is so ding dang pretty and ding dang talented and wow what a remarkable person
- the way that Lin says “And her body’s saying, ‘hell, yes’ is um.. 😓
- “You see, that was my wife you decided to” — “Fuuuu—“
- Act 2: 5. The Room Where It Happens
- honorable mention: “Bros.”
- “Talk less. Smile more.” LMM being a dramatic bastard
- Act 2: 6. Schuyler Defeated
- Act 2: 7. Cabinet Battle #2
- “revolution is messy but now is the time to stand."
- honorable mention: “Ooh!!”
- “We signed a treaty with a King whose head is now in a basket. Would you like to take it out and ask it? ‘Should we honor our treaty, King Louis’ head?’ ‘Uh... do whatever you want, I’m super dead.’”
- Thomas Jefferson all like “but sir do we not fight for freedom” MY BAD SIR YOU ARE A SLAVE-OWNER HOW ABOUT YOU NOT
- mentioning Lafayette because apparently LMM has no problem with breaking the fourth wall
- “Daddy’s calling.”
- “I’m in the cabinet. I am complicit in watching him grabbin’ at power and kiss it. If Washington isn’t gon’ listen to disciplined dissidents, this is the difference. This kid is out!”
- “Southern motherfuckin’ Democratic-Republicans!”
- “The emperor has no clothes.”
- “Sir, I don’t know what you heard but whatever it is Jefferson started it.” — “Thomas Jefferson resigned this morning.” — “You’re kidding.” — “I need a favor.” — “Whatever you say, sir, Jefferson will pay for his behavior.” — “I’ll use the press. I’ll write under a pseudonym, you’ll see what I can do to him—“ — “Yes! He resigned you can finally speak your mind!” — “Ha. Good luck defeating you, sir.” - “I’m sorry, what?”
- Act 2: 10. I Know Him

- Act 2: 13. Hurricane
- Act 2: 14. The Reynolds Pamphlet
- honorable mention: *DEEP VOICE* “DAMN”
- Act 2: 15. Burn
- i’ll be the first to say i wasn’t a huge fan of Eliza at first aside from Phillipa Soo’s killer voice
- this gave me a lot of respect for her
- honorable mention: “You have married an Icarus. He has flown too close to the sun.”
- Act 2: 16. Blow Us All Away

- “God, you’re a fox.”
- Act 2: 17. Stay Alive (Reprise)
- The ‘I know, I know. Shh.’ and the full circle back to his mom teaching him french on the piano really got to me for the beautiful artistry in it but also damn them feels
- Act 2: 18. It’s Quiet Uptown
- “I spend hours in the garden. I walk alone to the store and it’s quiet uptown. I never liked the quiet before. I take the children to church on Sunday, a sign of the cross at the door, and I pray. That never used to happen before.”
- “Philip, you would like it uptown. It’s quiet uptown.”
- “You knock me out, I fall apart.”
- “Eliza, do you like it uptown? It’s quiet uptown.”
- “There are moments that the words don’t reach. There is suffering too terrible to name. You hold your child as tight as you can and push away the unimaginable. The moments when you’re in so deep it feels easier to just swim down.”
- “There are moments that the words don’t reach. There is a grace too powerful to name. We push away what we can never understand. We push away the unimaginable.”
- “Can you imagine?”
- Act 2: 19. The Election of 1800
- honorable mention: “And they say I’m a Francophile: at least they know I know where France is!”
- “You used to work on the same staff” — “Whaaaat.”
- “Honestly, it’s kind of draining.” — “Burr...” — “Sir!” — “Is there anything you wouldn’t do?” — “No. I’m chasing what I want. And you know what?” — “What?” — “I learned that from you.” / this moment made the blow that he voted for Jefferson like a damn hole in my chest and i actually really felt for Burr. i get Hammy’s reluctance, i think if anything he was hoping voting for Jefferson would give Burr the chance to have experience as VP and then the next election he might vote for him then depending
- Act 2: 20. Your Obedient Servant
- A. Burr
- A. Ham
- “I just need to write something down.” / really resonated as one of the last things they showed him doing before going off to the duel, his life really was writing and that was the perfect way to say that in a very subtle sort of way. i really appreciate it artistically, whether it was intentionally so or not.
- Act 2: 22. The World Was Wide Enough
- okay but first of all i would like to comment on the fact that Ariana DeBose PLAYS THE GODDAMN BULLET, I JUST
- THE FACT THAT THE BULLET HAS A PART
- “This man will not make an orphan of my daughter.” / this made me really sympathize with Burr, as well as when he tries to go towards Hamilton (at least in the play but I sincerely hope that was historically accurate) / but also that fact that Theodosia Burr was lost at sea at 29 makes me sad because Hamilton’s life was taken to give her one and then she just up and disappears in a freak accident
- Act 2: 23. Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story
- the orphanage got to me
- i loved that he (LMM) didn’t end it with himself or anything
- he let Phillipa Soo tear my heart out
- it killed me but i died quite happily
- and really what more could you ask for.

I need lams headcanons OwO
Heck yes!
I’ll even do a hamilton musical one cause why not?
So:
When John met Alexander at the tavern, his heart literally stopped
Like
Help
He’s so helpless
John thought Alexander idea for financial system was genius (he actually understood it)
Alexander and Lafayette spent an entire week figuring out how to sell John’s Black battalion plan with him so it could be passed and approved
Alexander and John would always team up to rap battles with Lafayette and Hercules
John begged Hercules to let him know Alexander’s size cause Alex’s coat was falling at the seams.
Guess what he got for his twentieth birthday. A coat.
John told Burr G Wash was in town and looking for assistance. (He could hear the dude singing)
John and Alex and Hercules and Laf all stayed together for a good portion up until A Winter’s Ball and Stay Alive. John and Alex shared a room.
;)
After the rap battle Seabury, for some reason he had a note that said ‘Thou shall kick me right up here’ with an arrow that pointed down to his butt. It’s theorized it was either Laf or Laurens, but Alex knows who it is
When they joined up with G Wash, John and Alex got all caught up on work
;)
If you know what I mean
Originally they weren’t suppose to go to the winter ball but they were near the Forrest of coincidence *coughs*
John danced with Peggy Schuyler so Alex could sweet talk with Angelica. He did it cause Ham’s his bro.
Laurens got super drunk at Ham’s wedding. He was a big ol’ mess. (Peggy took care of him with help of Hercules!)
The rest of the night John had to listen to Lafayette talk about his relationship with G Wash and about his wife and such.
Alexander and John spent so much time apart at a time. John would send pictures of Alexander’s portrait to him. Alexander weeped.
When Lee retreated, John was like ‘this bitch!!’ The moment John saw Lee it’s a miracle he didn’t punch him in the face
On the day of the duel, G Wash asking A Ham for help and A Ham was like ‘Sorry, I got plans with my boyfriend.’ And G Wash was like ‘grass stains are messy.’
Alex blanched cause he’s married and he may or may not have a kid on the way who is to say but yeah
G Wash rolled his eyes
John and Alex invented a language so if their letters were discovered they wouldn’t get in trouble.
John does the best Burr impression that left Alex in stitches
Literally
Alex cooks the best so he would make him and John breakfast depending on the house
Alex wanted to go to SC but G Wash told him no, they need him in Yorktown with his command
Basically G Wash brought John back up to HQ due to Alex driving him crazy
They partied so much after they won. They were thrilled
John had to leave but they got to see each other happy
One last time
When Alex found out he had a son, Eliza told him ‘no to John, Alex.’ She was very expasterated.
Alex wanted to make John The Godfather for Philip but alas
When he heard John had died, he locked himself in his study, writing. He threw himself into work.
Alex didn’t sleep for a good couple of weeks.
Every year, on the day that John passed away, regardless, he holds himself up in his study and reads their letters from start to finish.
He swears John ghost appeared on when the Reynolds Pamphlet happened but he didn’t sleep for three days at the time so what does that tell you
Alex never had enough time to go down to SC and see him one last time
When he passes away, John is the first one he sees. (Philip was a lil peeved about that)
When Burr sings his last part, John has to resist the urge to haunt him because BITCH
Now onto the modern au (if you’re still reading!):
John and Alex met
It’s like instant ‘oh god I found my soulmate’
‘Shite’
John works as a barista but he goes to college at night
He wants to be a zoologist on his own dime, screw his dad
Alexander is in his first year of law school at nineteen
But he works in the same coffee shop as John
They become best friends fast
Oh god
John is so helpless but the last time he had a crush the dude was awful and purposely broke his heart
His dad and him don’t talk he’s not meant for love
So yeah
Alex lost his mom and his brother
Sometimes he talks to his dad
So he got issues too
Laf and Hercules know they like each other
It takes a while
But
Their tension becomes thicker
Alexander will only take a break when John asks
Not even Washington can persuade Alex and he’s his boss
Jesus
John missed nature
Alex and John go on nature trips
As long as Herc and Laf come with them
They start doing camping trips cause John complained he wasn’t experiencing nature like he use to
Alex reluctantly agreed to go camping
As long as he gets to share a tent with John
Hercules is a light sleeper, btw
Laf isn’t though
Yes I’ll confirm what you’re thinking: they definitely try that
Afterwards, (in the morning) they announce they are dating
Without missing a beat Herc goes ‘Wish you had done that before the trip. Otherwise, I could have brought headphones.’
Alex and John are bright red
Go Hercules
Next time they go camping, Aaron Burr comes with them
No one tells Burr to bring headphones
Anyway
Alex and John go walking through Central Park on their days off
They have coordinated date nights (if they stay in on a date night, the other has to plan a relexing night but they get to choose the channel. John loves the discovery channel.)
They live with Laf and Hercules but they plan on moving out to their own place
Mostly so John can get a pet
Hercules has a no pet rule
John and Alexander will text each other poems
When John has to go to SC for a while, Alex and him send each other letters
It’s mostly cute but it could def give the devil a nosebleed
John reconciles with his siblings but not his dad.
He eventually tells Alex why
John will play with Alexander’s hair the most
John is two inches taller than Alex and Alex hates short jokes so much
UGH
I have more but ask me again and I’ll be sure to help you out anon! Thanks so much for the ask!! I love lams they are one of my favorites! :)

God okay so over the past few days I've re-listened to Hamilton about 3 1/2 times (including watching a lot of the old animatics on youtube thank u amazing artists) and now you're all going to just have to deal with the fact that i have a Lot to say about it!
First of all, I forgot how fucking amazing the motif usage is through the whole thing. Like, we all know and love how the 'Schuyler Sisters' melody is repeated when Eliza and Angelica are reunited in 'Non-Stop' but god!! Every single song has that sort of motif styling - yes I know, that's how musicals work, but it's done so gracefully in Hamilton!!! Almost every time someone says Hamilton's name, it's to the tune of his introduction and even when it shouldn't fit ('Right Hand Man' - "Hamilton, have you met Burr? ... Hamilton, how come no one can get you on their staff?" is just one example, and it's subtle but it's there if you know what to look for). Really the only obvious time when his name is used and it's not to that tune, it's during 'Your Obedient Servant' when Burr says "Dear Alexander" - instead of the rapid 16th note style in a descending chord that has been used up to then, he uses something more akin to an 1/8-1/2-1/4 note sequence, drawing out the "an" in the middle and keeping the tone pretty consistent. And even then, the "A dot Ham" later in the song is a modified version of the original motif! God! I love it!
I always have, and always will, love the doubling up of characters - it's thematically brilliant, it's heartbreaking at times and joyous in others, and even though I have listened through the whole musical more times than i can count at this point, I still get a little twist in my gut when 'Say No To This' comes on and you realize that when Jasmine Cephas Jones (in the original Broadway cast recording, which is what i have on my phone) said "Me? I loved him" in the introduction she didn't really mean it as another Schuyler sister, but as the 'other woman' GOD I JUST LOVE IT SO MUCH. Every single double-casting is so perfect and I adore LMM forever for it, even as I cry about Laurens/Phillip.
I know every story has a hero and a villain - Burr even says "now I'm the villain in your history" - but can I just take a moment to appreciate the 'villains journey' that Burr takes alongside Hamilton's 'heros journey' like??? It's so masterfully done - he's presented as just sort of a stuffy, cautious dude and then BAM, on your first listen 'Your Obedient Servant' seems like such a wild leap from the mild-mannered man we thought he was to someone who demands a duel to the death. But when you listen again, you realize that he was always like that. He was just quiet about it to start. "Talk less, smile more. Don't let them know what you're against or what you're for." He mentions the death of a former commanding officer off-handedly ("I was a captain under General Montgomery, until he caught a bullet in the neck in Quebec, and well in summary, I think that I could be of some assistance"), he's got patience and intelligence and ambition, allowing him to let plans fall together naturally insead of rushing in ("I'll keep all my plans close to my chest... I'm taking my time, watching the afterbirth of a nation, watching the tension grow"), and, quite frankly, I've always been of the opinion that it's not the guy who punches you in the face in the heat of the moment you need to be worries about, it's the guy who waits for an opportune moment two months later to slash your tires and plant evidence so that you get accused for trying to commit insurance fraud.
Eliza's solo at the very end still fucks me up. That is all.

Reminiscences of Mrs. Alexander Hamilton
One of the contributions to volume 78 of the Atlantic Monthly, published in 1896, came from an unidentified woman who in her youth had stayed as a guest with Elizabeth Hamilton and her daughter in Washington, D.C. during the 1850s. Over games of backgammon and nights by the fire, she was treated to intimate view of Eliza Hamilton in her old age. Her full account follows:
“When I was a child of twelve or thirteen, I spent the winter in Washington, and had the good fortune to know Mrs. Alexander Hamilton, whom I remember to this day with vivid interest and love. It was probably pleasant for her to have a young person about her, and for days and often weeks at a time she and her widowed daughter would have me with them. General Winfield Scott lived in the house next Mrs. Hamilton’s, and I became familiar with his soldierly figure, and remember how eagerly I watched for him on New Year’s Day, when his six-feet-and-four was arrayed in all the glory of full uniform for the President’s reception. I had my own idea of the God of War, but not Mars himself could have filled it more gorgeously than the general as he crossed the broad sidewalk in a dazzle of gold and color, with waving plume and clanking sword. Bur there was no prancing war-horse, and I had a miserable sense of flatness when all that splendor was swallowed up in a rusty hack and jolted away in the most commonplace manner.
Mrs. Hamilton’s favorite room in her house, which was on H street, near the site of the Presbyterian church, was the front room of the English basement, the dining room being back of it. There, by the window, in her own particular chair, she sat for hours, either looking out, or weaving mats on a small frame with pins along the sides. No longer able to read or even knit, this work was a great resource to her who had always been full of activity. Precluded from any social exertion by her great age (she was then ninety-five), she often seemed pleased to turn to me for amusement. I would read to her, or sit near and sew my bits of work while she was in a talkative mood; or, in fine weather, I would walk with her. Leaning her right hand on a stout cane, and her left arm upon my arm, she would walk several blocks, generally to a florist’s, for she was passionately fond of flowers; and always there was from her a cheerful little stream of talk, either of reminiscences, or of observations of nature, or of philosophical reverie, when everything else seemed to be forgotten. In stormy weather there were her mat-weaving and backgammon, of which she was very fond. I would have to tell her the number on the dice, because she could not see; but she would play for hours. I asked her once if she had always like it. She replied: “Yes, always. When I was young, Mr. Franklin taught me to play. He visited my father’s when I was a girl, and was very kind to me.”
One of her reminiscences that made a deep impression on me was the story of a great gathering of the Indians of eastern New York at Saratoga, which was then only a log fort. All the chiefs and greatest warriors of the Six Nations had met in solemn council, row after row of fine specimens of manhood standing silently around an open space, where a bit of greensward gleamed in the sunshine. Although they were dressed in all the barbaric pomp of war-paint, there was peace on their faces as they stood awaiting the approach of a small group of whites,--one or two officers in full uniform, and a tall commanding man in the prime of life, leading by the hand a slim girl about thirteen, dressed in white, with uncovered head and half-curious, half-frightened eyes. This man was General Philip Schuyler, whom the Indians honored as they did no other white man; and they had met to offer him a tribute of devotion. At a sign from the great chief of their ranks parted to admit General Schuyler, who advanced into the open space, still leading his little daughter. There, with many ceremonies, the child was formally adopted by the Six Nations, the chiefs ending the sacred rites by laying their hands upon her head, and giving her an Indian name meaning “One-of-us.” This incident as told by Mrs. Hamilton was the more impressive because she herself was the little maid thus adopted.
I recall one of her reminiscences of General Washington, because it gave me a new idea of him. She had been talking of men of bodily strength, and she observed that Washington was a very strong man. She then told an incident that must have happened soon after her marriage, for she was at the time at headquarters with her husband. Washington was writing in his office, a room on the second floor of a farmhouse. The farmer’s wife, who was washing clothes, suddenly discovered that the shed-roof was on fire. She rushed screaming into the house, and Washington came bounding down the stairs, picked up one of the large washtubs full of suds, ran upstairs with it, got out on the roof, and emptied it on the blaze; then he ran for another tub, and still another, before he succeeded in putting out the fire.
After dinner, it was the custom for Mrs. Hamilton, if well enough, to spend an hour or so in the large parlors on the first floor, where every evening there were many visitors, friends and strangers. Generally she enjoyed their calls, taking part in the conversation and showing a lively interest in current affairs; but sometimes she was unable to make the exertion. She did not make calls herself, but once I remember she went to one of President Pierce’s receptions. When it was known that the widow of Alexander Hamilton was present, she became the attraction of the evening; and the President, anxious to do her honor, left his place, offered his arm, and escorted her around the East Room.
Her dress, always black, of wool in the morning and of silk or satin in the evening, had been made after the same fashion for years. She wore a plain full skirt, and a plain, rather short waist folded over (not under) a muslin kerchief. Around her neck was a broad, finely plaited ruffle fastened behind, and a small soft shawl was laid over her shoulders. Her face, with its fine features, was framed by a plain snowy cap edged with finely plated ruffle, and tied under the chin. Some of the fire of youth still shone in those dark eyes, as she sat and talked with her guests, or, when they had gone, she slowly walked about the large rooms, leaning on her cane, pausing at one old bit or another of furniture to tell me its history. These rooms were crowded with relics,--swords, books, china, pictures, and many other things whose history I would gladly recall. The side wall near the entrance door was almost covered with a large half-length portrait of Washington, who sat to Stuart for it, and gave it to Hamilton. Under a large handsome centre table in the front parlor was a great silver wine-cooler, also a gift from Washington. I remember nothing more distinctly than a sofa and chairs with spindle legs, upholstered in black broadcloth, embroidered in flowery wreaths by Mrs. Hamilton herself, and a marble bust of Hamilton standing on it pedestal in a draped corner. That bust I can never forget, for the old lady always paused before it in her tour of the rooms, and leaning on her cane, gazed and gazed, as if she could never be satisfied.
She always called him Hamilton. One night, I remember, she seemed sad and absent-minded, and could not go to the parlor where there were visitors, but sat near the fire and played backgammon for a while; when the game was done, she leaned back in her chair a long time with closed eyes, as if lost to all around her. I never heard her complain, and I loved her with a reverent love that made me feel awed as the long silence was broken by the murmured words, “I am so tired,--it is so long. I want to see Hamilton.” What thoughts must have come to her from the past!—for she had griefs and losses beyond the usual grievous lot of woman. It is told in history that her oldest son, Philip, fell in a duel before his father met a similar fate; but it is unwritten history that the oldest daughter, a lovely young creature, was so shocked by her brother’s cruel death that her reason fled forever. In a private asylum she lived to be an old woman.
When Mrs. Hamilton died, at the age of ninety-seven, although an interment in old Trinity churchyard in New York had been for years a forbidden thing, her last request was granted. Quietly, at night, that frail little form was laid to rest there by the side of her beloved and illustrious husband. “

Hi, so I was wondering if you could maybe write one shot where it's Ten Duel Commandments but instead of Charles Lee getting hurt, it's actually John who got shot. How would Alexander and George Washington react? How about Lee himself and Burr? Thank you so much! ❤️
(Edited by: @dflwrites)
General Charles Lee had decided he was man enough to insult the great General George Washington. John Laurens decided to put that to the test, challenging Lee to a duel.
The event took place on a hot, early morning, before anybody else was awake, as per tradition. Laurens stood across the field from Lee with his second, his close friend Alexander Hamilton.
“Are you worried?” Hamilton asked as Laurens loaded his pistol.
“Please,” Laurens sneered. “He’s a coward. Nothing more, nothing less. He’d sooner empty his bladder on this field than he would his pistol.”
Hamilton laughed at that and moved to meet Lee’s second, Aaron Burr, in the middle of the field.
“This is his last chance, Hamilton,” Burr warned. “This is childish. Have your man call it off.”
Hamilton scoffed. “Why should he? He isn’t afraid for a second of that joke of a general,” he informed him, making sure to speak loud enough for Lee to hear.
Burr sighed and solemnly nodded before going back to his place at Lee’s side. “Good luck.”
“Thank you..” Lee muttered, taking a deep breath to calm himself down. Laurens was a man of pride. Lee had this as good as won.
As the men began their paces, Lee actually wore a smirk, a knowing grin. It was as if he knew the outcome of the duel and only came back to live it out.
“1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9-” Laurens was cut off as he cried out in pain, feeling a bullet tear through the skin at his waist. The second he fell to his knee, Hamilton was at his side, reaching for the pistol himself.
“That dirty little-”
“No!” Laurens argued. “Tell him I want another shot.”
Hamilton’s eyes widened. “But you’re-”
“I want another shot,” Laurens said, more sternly this time.
Hamilton sighed and stood up, turning towards Lee and Burr to give them the news. Instead, he was interrupted by the sound of a horse approaching. General Washington’s horse.
“What is the meaning of this?” the General demanded, jumping off his horse.
Hamilton jumped to his feet, Laurens painfully doing the same.
Washington’s eyes widened a bit at the sight of Laurens and his injury and he went over, helping the colonel back to the horse and glancing at the doctor that attended their duel - a new recruit, as most were during duels. “This is one of our best men. Make sure he gets the proper attention,” the General commanded.
“Yes sir,” the doctor agreed, taking Laurens to the medical tent.
Washington looked at the three remaining men with a stern look, making his way to Lee first. “Lee, while I know you and I will never agree on much, I hope that you know these men do not speak for me. Having said that, I think it would be for the best if you stepped down from your position as a general and as a soldier.”
Lee glared harshly. “You treat that child like he’s better than me, even after giving me the title I have now. I have seniority, I have done nothing wrong, but if it means taking no more orders from the likes of hypocrites such as yourself, I will gladly leave.” He spat at the general’s feet before walking away.
Washington looked at Burr next, the disappointment in his eyes beginning the conversation. “Burr, I never expected to see you participating in such matters. Friend or not, I know deep down, you knew you shouldn’t be here with Lee. I’ll let it slide, but do not let it happen again.”
“Yes, sir..” Burr muttered.
“Go see how Colonel Laurens is fairing. Report his condition to me immediately.”
Burr nodded before running off to do as he was told, leaving Hamilton and Washington alone.
“Sir, he-”
“I don’t want to hear another word from you. This war is hard enough without soldiers fighting amongst themselves, especially those as highly respected as you and Laurens.”
“He disrespected your name and spat at you! What made you think that coward was fit to be general?!”
“Years of seniority, son.”
“I’m not your son,” Hamilton muttered.
“And I am not a maiden in need of defending, I can take what they throw at me. You will never learn to do the same unless you grow up.”
Hamilton clenched his fists at his sides. “I learn from experience. If you gave me some kind of power, a battalion, I could-”
“With behavior like this?” Washington asked, almost shocked that Hamilton could think of something so ridiculous. Almost. “Until you grow up, son, you’ll never get to-”
“I am not your son!” Hamilton snapped. “And maybe if you stopped thinking of us as such, Laurens wouldn’t have felt so compelled to protect your honor. Maybe Laurens wouldn’t have been shot.”
The silence that hung in the air quickly grew heavy, suffocating both men. But neither dared to break it. Not for a minute or so, until Washington knew exactly what he had to say.
“You’re dismissed, Hamilton.”
Alexander began walking away. “I’m going to see John.”
“No,” Washington called back. “No, you’re dismissed as a soldier. We can use all the help we get, but with an attitude like yours, you’ll do nothing but hurt us for now.”
Hamilton felt his heart drop. “Let me see John first. Please..”
“I said no and that’s an order, Hamilton. Pack your things and leave,” Washington said sternly. Leaving without knowing the condition of John would kill Alexander and Washington knew it. It was the kind of wake up call he needed to see that running a battalion, that having the lives of these men in his hands, was no joke. Washington turned and went back to camp, finding Burr in front of the medical tent.
“He’s lost quite a bit of blood, but the doctor believes he’ll make it. We were able to feed him and give him water, but for now, he’s unconscious.”Washington nodded. “Thank you. I want you and Lafayette to see to it that Hamilton stays out of this tent. He needs to learn a lesson and this is the only way I can think to teach it to him.”
“Yes sir.”
“Good. I’ll call Lafayette over.”
Burr nodded and, not a few minutes later, Lafayette was at his side, guilt evident on his face as they stood, prepared to keep his friends apart.
“Laurens is alright, yes?” Lafayette asked.
“Yes. He’ll be fine, but an order is an order and we have to keep Hamilton out.”
Lafayette nodded and sighed, knowing that this was going to be difficult.
Alexander went to his tent and packed his things, leaving a letter on his bed addressed to John before leaving. He saw Burr and Lafayette - he knew he wasn’t getting past them, but he also knew no soldier would dare read a private letter. So, he left, taking a carriage back home to his wife, the second love of his life.
(Hey, guys! Quick note: I’m making a new posting schedule based on you guys. After every post, I start a metaphorical clock for 96 hours, or four days, and every note takes off one hour until the next thing I post. For example, the last High School AU chapter got 7 notes, so this was posted 89 hours later. I’m doing this because it honestly does hurt me when I have over 1500 followers and, on a one shot that me and @dflwrites work hard on, I get less than 15 notes, especially when I can make a quick text post and get more than that in less than a day. And, before you ask, I’m putting this under a one shot rather than on it’s own or before the one shot because I wouldn’t want people liking just because they want to see something else, something that caters to them, rather than because they like what I do and appreciate the work I put into it. Having said that, please don’t just tell this to others, that’ll kill the point. I’ll add this note under the next few posts until I think enough people have read it. If you guys have any questions or anything about this, please DM me. Thank you for taking the time to read this!)

Highlights from Hamilton!
The rush I got hearing the opening notes mmmm
Hamilton was Very Smol and Burr was Very Tol. It was gr e a t. Made their dynamic 10000x better.
John Laurens
"And Peggy!" She was so exasperated it was hilarious
Hamilton trying his best to get to Samuel Seabury and Burr attempting to hold this tiny ball of fury back. And then Hamilton finally got close and CLIMBED UP on the box with Sam and honestly their whole interaction was GREAT. I honestly thought Burr was going to lift Hamilton off the box. I was kind of disappointed he didn't.
King George hadn't even started singing yet- he was BARELY on stage - and people were already laughing. Myself included.
The entirety of Satisfied GOSH how did they do that so well ALSO Angelica is a queen
Lafayette
Wait For It gave me chills
GEEEEOOOORRRGE W A SH I N GTON

Ten Duel Commandments was Very Good. It's one of my favorites so I was happy to see it come to life!
CALL ME SON ONE MORE TIME
Did I mention I love Laurens and Lafayette??
EvErYONE gIVE it UP FOr AMErIcA’s FaVORitE FIGhtiNG FRENCHMAAANNN
LA FAY ETTE
Honestly everything from Guns and Ships to Non-Stop was a m a z i n g. So intense. Kind of sad. Sometimes adorable. It was all wonderful.
Hamilton learning about Laurens’ death was?? so sad??? My heart
I cried a little during Dear Theodosia, not gonna lie. Mostly because I love the end bit ahhhh
What’d I Miss was as perfect as I was expecting.
Honestly Jefferson deserves his own bullet point here.
Jefferson
I like him better than Daveed Diggs
Every single Cabinet Battle was hilarious and very well done.
Eliza beat boxing while Philip sings his poem omigosh
I...wanna be....in the roooommm where it happens..
Ok seriously though Burr during The Room Where It Happens was BRILLIANT. His vocals gave me serious chills.
SAME WITH WASHINGTON IN ONE LAST TIME. Golly they can SING!!
There are so many things I love in Act 2 WHAT
*Burr slips out of a dark corner* ...It must be nice..it must be niiice...to have Washington on your side. *is friends with Jefferson in .2 seconds and harmonizing with him*
Hurricane was chilling and beautiful
NEVER GONNA BE PRESIDENT NOW *everyone is climbing on furniture and dancing, Jefferson starts throwing Reynolds Pamphlets everywhere, King George emerges and dances with everyone and NO ONE CARES*
The way Eliza sang I hope that you b u rn
What do you mean Philip dies what kind of sick au is that ahahaha ahah ha haha ahhhhhhh
Hamilton reaching to comfort Eliza and her immediately ripping her hand away and holding it still in the air yes you know what part I’m talking about
At the end of It’s Quiet Uptown, when Eliza takes Hamilton’s hand, and while everyone is singing “forgiveness” and so on, Hamilton looks at her and you can see him talking and she looks ahead still but you can just tell she’s listening and understanding and sdskdksdksdksdks
Everything literally everything in World Was Wide Enough and Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story was BEAUTIFUL
Ok that was a lot longer than I thought it would be! This is what I can think of now... I'll add another highlight if I think of it. In summary, Hamilton was super fun!

How was Hamilton?
Magical. I still feel it in my heart ye know? I had the main cast save for Marsha Songcome as Eliza, Sifiso Mazibuko as Burr and Jack Butterworth as Laurens/Phillip.
General notes:
- Maybe this is a common thing, but Angelica was constantly flirting with every guy on stage, while none of them obviously were good enough for her. I wasn’t expecting that, but I liked it.
- “Time to get some pistols and a doctor on site“ a swole af blond male model walks across the stage carrying a medic bag the way mechanics carry their toolboxes in pornos
- Obioma’s “meet me inside” was deep af. I felt it in my bones.
- Satisfied’s choreography was fucking amazing. It’s Quiet Uptown also had a really beautiful one, which surprised me. I was expecting it to be more stripped down but I loved what they did with it.
- I’m so glad I went to stage door, everyone was so lovely!! Tarinn Callender complimented my tattoo and I had a really pathetic fangirl moment over it.
- I find it amusing that the American King George is this (lowkey queercoded), funny character while the British KG is just like… not amused with the American’s bullshit and the British audience was here for it. The difference was very stark and interesting.
Performances:
- Not much I can say about Jamael Westman that hasn’t been said already. His voice is very pleasing to listen to and I loved the little poses he would throw throughout the show. I think he strikes a great balance between playful and flirty, and driven and relentless, the way any good Hamilton should. Also his timing (comedic and dramatic) is on point.
- Sifiso Mazibuko as Burr. Yes. He was fantastic, my eye was drawn to him throughout the whole show and he always had something interesting to say about the character in every scene. He genuinely seemed to be having a good time in the beginning of the first act. His RWIH was really good. He also sounds a lot like Leslie - at some less belty points I remember thinking that I wouldn’t be able to distinguish the two based on audio alone.
- Jason Pennycooke was adorable as Laf. I wasn’t expecting to like him very much as TJ for dumb reasons, but he totally proved me wrong?? He brought everything with every scene he was in and was absolutely delightful to watch. It was totally different from Daveed’s portrayal, and yet it was him, I wasn’t left wanting for anything. It’s just amazing to me, because different yet equally good portrayals are what different casts are all about.
- Jack Butterworth as Laurens/Phillip was alright. I felt like his energy wasn’t quite up to par with the rest of the hamilsquad, but I totally get that he’s an understudy and part of his energy was going into keeping track of what was happening.
- I wasn’t feeling much of a chemistry between Eliza and Angelica? It felt like the sisters had had a fight behind the scenes or something the whole time lol. Again, probably just had to do with Eliza being a stand in and not having the time to really develop that chemistry.
- That said, Burr’s and Hamilton’s chemistry was fantastic, I loved watching them interact. The moment in 10 Duel Commandments when they negotiate stood out to me purely because I was watching their expressions on the edge of my seat. I wish I could say something more specific about this, but I’m no theatre buff so I’m bad at putting these things into words. As much as I want to see Giles as well at some point, I’m perfectly happy I got to see this.
That’s all I can think of at the moment. I’m praying the show will still be on if/when I end up moving to England because I need to see it again. Good god.

Hamilton Angelica Tour in Atlanta, 6/2/18 Evening
So, this was my first time EVER seeing Hamilton and being the extra person I am I had to document all my thoughts so I could remember everything I loved and share it with others! The cast was the full Angelica cast with Edred Utomi as Hamilton and Karli Dinardo as Peggy/Maria. Putting this review under a read more because it is LONG. If anyone has any specific questions about cast members or songs feel free to ask!
We were seated in left orchestra, and while there was no obstructed view there were moments where characters (often Eliza for some reason) were either blocked by someone else or had their back to us.
(I also credit the structure of these rambles to @fourteenacross whose Hamilton reviews are always so well thought out and insightful 💙)
Alexander Hamilton: I nearly passed out when I heard that first note. But this is just such a good introductory number, everyone played their parts very well. The staging is unique and beautiful and when the ensemble all sang together towards the end I felt it in my soul. The “me? I....” part was as striking as expected.
Aaron Burr, Sir: I could tell from the get-go Edred and Nicholas had awesome chemistry as Hamilton and Burr. The bursar lines were really funny. Edred seemed very deflated in his little “ha” after Burr’s advice. The squad introductions were predictably fun and Chris Lee’s dancing is a godsend.
My Shot: I lovedddd Edred in this song. He had so much energy with the squad and was very determined as Hamiton should be!!! Chris’s delivery of “anarchy” will never fail to crack me up, and Chaundre’s coat flip was awesome. Ruben got the crowd so pumped on the “rise up” bit which is one of my FAVORITE parts of the show. But my favorite part of this song was definitely Edred. He had a great little nervous “oh am I talking too loud?” and his “I imagine death” was so vulnerable and convincing. I loved seeing the sisters in the wings, I’m not sure if this was intentional but I almost saw Julia kinda staring longingly at Ham? Foreshadowing? Or me looking too much into things? Who knows?
The Story of Tonight: Edred and Ruben both have lovely singing voices which made this a 10/10 number. The camaraderie felt so real and it’s just such a sweet little number that I adore.
The Schuyler Sisters: All around so much fun. Karli’s Peggy wasn’t as pouty as some of my favorites but she was still very cute and got some laughs. Nicholas had a very funny delivery of “your daddy’s got money.” They all sounded amazing and had awesome energy!! But one of my favorite dumb details in this show is Eliza’s facial expressions during Angelica’s roast and downsides of being pretty far left, Burr was completely blocking Eliza from my frame of vision :(( still, overall great number and Sabrina especially slayed!
Farmer Refuted: Really funny. Edred’s Ham was so frustrated with this tiny guy because “he’s WRONG and I’m RIGHT and I need to SHOW HIM.” Lafayette distracting Burr in the back was a great detail as well.
You’ll Be Back: I thought this was done well, but honestly it might have been my least favorite king song of the show because he didn’t have many funny moments until the back half of the song. He did this growl on “and ever” that was hilarious, but to me the funniest part was the ensemble scurrying out SO QUICKLY when he called them and following his dance moves.
Redcoat transition got some audible gasps.
Right Hand Man: The beginning of this song where the Schuyler sisters and ensemble sing at the front of the stage then quickly run away is just one of my favorite little details of the show. Such captivating and almost haunting choreography. Carvens has AMAZING stage presence and such a powerful voice!! His Washington was so frustrated with everything and very authoritative. The cannon “BOOM”s were so loud in the theater and really brought you into the scene. Nicholas had a very funny delivery of “from a distance.” I loved loved loved the Schuyler sisters harmonizing in the wings as well.
A Winter’s Ball: This was the first of many moments where Nicholas used obviously fake cheeriness to cover up how annoyed Burr was with Hamilton to AMAZING effect. Chris looked so put out when Hamilton pushed him aside lmao. And I totally missed the faces of the guys towards the end bc I was watching Angelica and Eliza like YES THOSE ARE MY GIRLS. Whoops.
Helpless: Ahhh this was just so CUTE. You could actually hear Julia smiling through some lines, her Eliza was so smitten and pleading w Angelica. Edred and Julia had fantastic chemistry and you could so feel the love between them. Julia had a wonderfully “wtf” reaction to “Angelica tried to take a bite of me.” Also, I owe my life to all her riffs. She has such a lovely vibrant voice that reverberated through the theater so well.
Satisfied: This is my favorite song in the whole show and Sabrina did not disappoint. First of all, seeing the “rewind” bit live is SO COOL. I loved that Sabrina genuinely played it as feeling a real emotional and romantic connection to Hamilton but also was so protective of Eliza and knew she couldn’t have him. She was the perfect blend of Angelica’s stoicism and emotion. And oh god THE BRIDGE. That scene where it’s just Angelica, Eliza, and Hamilton on stage and Angelica looks absolutely gutted as she delivers the “at least...” part and Eliza has this huge smile.... ugh just rip my heart out. No fancy riffs in the end but she did it well. Sabrina’s ending was heartbreaking and the staging w Angelica totally alone on stage was :((( I want to hug her. Fun tidbit: when Eliza and Burr are dancing, Burr was doing this SUPER dorky dance I can’t even explain and Eliza had the funniest look on her face.
The Story of Tonight (Reprise): They were all v drunk and silly and I loved it. Literally any scene Lafayette was in, Chris Lee was doing all kinds of weird dance moves that cracked me up. When Laurens was teasing Burr about Theodosia, Mulligan came up behind Burr and did this huge exaggerated thrusting motion that had me DYING. Edred’s “oh shit” was everything. In the final few lines after Hamilton said “what are you waiting for?”, Nicholas did this little almost resentful laugh that was like, “you could never understand.” Such a great dichotomy between these two characters and the actors did it so well.
Wait For It: First of all, Nicholas has an incredible voice and great stage presence and he rocked this number. I was fully captivated. Also, he got some laughs on “I’m keeping the bed warm while her husband is away” and “Theodosia she’s mine” which I’ve never heard laughs on? However, he had a REALLY BAD line flub that made me cringe but he recovered well. In the bridge part, he lowkey started singing the lyrics to The Word Was Wide Enough and then had like 5 seconds of silence before catching it again YIKES. But he made up for it doubly by going SO HARD on the final chorus w amazing emotion and intensity. You so felt Burr’s philosophy and wanted to root for him so badly. Loved it.
Stay Alive: I absolutely loved the little bit with the Bullet just skirting over Hamilton at the beginning. Robbie Nicholson’s Charles Lee was SO ANNOYING. It was perfect. The instrumentals of this number are superb as well. I really enjoyed Eliza and Angelica's presence in the balcony as well, Julia riffed a little bit on the “stay alive”s and it sounded very good. The Lams moment at the end was subtle but definitely there.
Ten Duel Commandments: I just really enjoy the staging of this song and the use of the turntable. I know I keep talking about the minute deliveries of Nicholas’s Burr, but THEY WERE SO GOOD. His “can we agree that duels are dumb and immature?” and “okay so we’re doing this” were just comic gold.
Meet Me Inside: INTENSE. Carvens basically bellowed his first “meet me inside.” Edred was super argumentative and pissed up until “call me son one more time” where he realized he messed up. Carvens “go home” was very firm but not yelled or whispered.
That Would Be Enough: Julia is a star. This number was just all kinds of cute, she was super touchy and physically affectionate with him and they really tugged on my heartstrings. Also she had one of my favorite touches that Solea did where she holds her belly on “and we could be enough” and her final “enoughhhh” had such a nice vibrato. The ending pose warmed my heart. Such a touching little song.
Guns and Ships: I LOVE CHRIS LEE!!!! His rapping was very crisp even with the accent and he had hella energy. His Lafayette was so eager and energetic. Something you don’t see in bootlegs is how COOL the choreography of passing Washington’s letter to Hamilton is. The Hamliza goodbye was very sweet, Edred touched her belly and she looked very sad.
History Has Its Eyes On You: Carvens has such a captivating and strong singing voice. All the harmonies of the ensemble and the ensemble singing together were transcendent.
Yorktown: Hi again I still love Chris Lee. It felt really good to clap for “immigrants, we get the job done.” You could really feel Edred’s emotion on the part about Eliza and his energy throughout the number was amazing. Jennifer Geller was mesmerizing as the bullet and I adored her part with Ruben. Mulligan’s rap WENT HARD Chaundre really brought it. Also I would like to reiterate my love for Carvens his “not yet” was so powerful!!! That emphasis!! I have never felt more alive than when the entire ensemble was singing at the end and all the chants. Another hidden gem of this number: on the second “the world turned upside down,” I could CLEARLY hear Raven Thomas doing a lil riff and it was much appreciated I was kinda sad to not see her as a sister.
What Comes Next?: This was funny.
Dear Theodosia: Nicholas and Edred had gorgeous harmonies together. A lovely and simple number that worked so well with the two of them.
Laurens Interlude: OUCH. Between Hamilton, Laurens, Lafayette, and Mulligan I didn’t even know who to look at. Hamilton looked so gutted, he was gripping the chair and just seemed devastated. Laf and Herc were in the balcony reading the letters and Lafayette gave a little salute and Mulligan just took a drink. Ruben had a very mournful and sad delivery and the stare between him and Edred towards the end was just heart wrenching. They definitely played up Lams in this scene.
Non Stop: I seriously love this number. Edred and Nicholas play so well off of each other. Edred had awesome energy and totally internalized the whole persistence and blind determination of Hamilton in this number. I completely missed his little flourish on “I practically perfected it” tho FOR VALID REASON and that reason was Nicholas delivering the line “he’s just non stop” with the ensemble through gritted teeth and a fake ass smile which was PRICELESS. Nicholas’s “okay” after “you’re a better lawyer than me” was really high pitched and funny. After Hamilton left, Burr like chased him down during “I’ll keep all my plans close to my chest” and it seemed like Burr was just desperately trying to prove to Hamilton that MY WAY OF DOING THINGS IS JUST AS GOOD AS YOURS, one of many excellent little character moments Nicholas threw in bless him. Edred and Sabrina had excellent chemistry in that tiny bit, his long stare at her was painful. “The other 51!!!” was just as emphatic as I could have hoped for. Julia’s “Alexander... AlexANDER” was pissed and I loved it, the final 30 seconds were beautiful. Julia has amazing riffs that sound so clear even when the whole ensemble is singing. Edred’s last “I am not throwing away my shot!!” was so LOUD lmao what an amazing number though it was a perfect Act 1 closer.
What’d I Miss?: After seeing Act 1, I knew Chris’s Jefferson would just be above and beyond, and I was so not disappointed. @ontheupandupagain said something in her tags the other day that he has such a good singing voice in this song AND HE REALLY DOES, his voice is like silk. But the acting was just invariably hilarious. His best scenes as Jefferson were playing off of Chaundre’s Madison though. Chaundre coughed into his hand and then shook Chris’s hand with it and his face was just like, “what the fuck dude?” and I thought it was SO FUNNY. He also did so much crazy stuff with his extra af coat which I loved.
Cabinet Battle #1: This was highkey the funniest number in the show. Chris and Chaundre had so many tiny little flourishes that had me in stitches. Ex. Chris getting ALLL in Edred’s face, Chris dropping the mic and Chaundre trying to pick it up but fanning it like it was too hot, Chaundre being so offended by “getting high with the French” that he literally shoved an ensemble member out of their chair and had to fan himself, them delivering “you don’t have the votes” with dance moves in PERFECT synchronization. Ugh so good. Edred was really good in this too, his mimicking of Jefferson’s dance moves was hilarious and he went v hard in his bit. After Jefferson and Madison left, he was very indignant w Washington like “I’m right!!! Listen to me!!!”
Take a Break: Julia and Ruben were very cute. Philip was tapping his legs like a little kid while playing the piano which was very in character. I thought Ruben’s Philip rap was very good! He was nervous until like the last two lines and then had such a funny victorious run up the stairs. But again, left orchestra probs, Edred was totally blocking my view of Julia beatboxing :( And god bless Edred for having equal amounts of chemistry with both Sabrina and Julia. The “my dearest Angelica” hits you right in the heart and Sabrina was almost fearfully hopeful but then dismissed it right away. Julia and Sabrina had awesome harmonies, and the bit where Angelica tried to go after him and Eliza stops her will never not hurt me.
Say No To This: Edred was very actively narrating to the audience in the beginning so you could definitely tell everything Maria did was through his retelling. His first “show me how to say no to this” got laughs which was kinda weird. One part of his performance that was so unique was that his “fuuuuu-” was very exasperated and funny more than downright shocked and horrified. Karli definitely played Maria as more of a victim too, she looked so panicked during the middle bit. Her “stay” note was AWESOME. One bit that tugged at the heartstrings was after James Reynolds clipped his whip thing, she stared at Hamilton very longingly and it almost seemed like a cry for help. I really liked the way all of them did this number.
The Room Where It Happens: Okay so this was definitely the best performance of the whole show. Hands down. Nicholas ran the gamut of Burr’s emotions from frustration to anger to horror to unbridled ambition. I can’t even really comment on Chris, Chaundre, or Edred because of how captivating Nicholas was. One touch I really liked was when Jefferson and Madison were planning for the meeting, Burr was aggressively pointing at them to the audience like “look at them!!! look how corrupt they are!!!” But yeah he tore that ending up on Leslie and Josh levels. There was huge applause MIDWAY THROUGH THE ENDING. He went so so so hard, literally slamming on the floor in just an unhinged state of finally letting go of his calculated demeanor. Such a huge shift for Burr and a showstopper in every sense of the word. Ugh I have chills just remembering it.
Schuyler Defeated: “They don’t like you” was delivered to great effect. Burr was almost nagging Hamilton towards the end as Hamilton walked away. These two just really had endlessly great chemistry.
Cabinet Battle #2: Very good all around. They were both super frustrated, and all the typical funny lines were very funny. I think Edred could have gone a just a little bit harder on “you must be out of your goDDAMN MIND” but hey that’s a very minute complaint. Chris got all up in his face for “Daddy’s calling.”
Washington On Your Side: Jefferson’s “wtf” face when Burr shows up will never not amuse me. And Chaundre’s “which I wrote!” was so indignant. They were all very calculating through the whole number and the crescendo of the song pumped me up so hard. 11/10 guys.
One Last Time: This was my favorite number Carvens did by far. His Washington was very desperate to have let a good impact on his country but in a very different way than Hamilton is. Edred’s reactions to all the different bits, especially “Jefferson started it,” were great. And I’d be lying if I said the ending didn’t draw some tears to my eyes, Carvens has such a powerful voice and this song is so cathartic.
I Know Him: I enjoyed it. The lines that are usually funny were funny.
The Adams Administration: Nicholas almost broke because of the king bouncing, but he kept it together. The “sit down” bit was predictably very funny. i loved how conniving Jefferson, Burr, and Madison were at the end, especially how Chris said “let’s let him know, what we know.”
We Know: Hamilton was kinda dismissive when he first said “Secretary Jefferson” but slowly realized something was up by “what is this?” He was very frantic to discredit their accusations. Chris’s “my God” was so disgusted and he was on such a high horse it was HILARIOUS. It totally reminded me of Gina Linetti high horsing Amy in the Season 1 B99 Thanksgiving episode, it was that good. Also, Eliza and Philip in the balcony was a subtle but heartbreaking touch.
Hurricane: I would literally die for the staging, lighting, and choreography of this song. Some of the light changes just hit you straight in the heart and all the choreography with the ensemble holding the chairs is so good. As for the actual performance, I think Edred was the perfect balance between Lin’s quieter emotions and Michael’s almost rage like intense emotions. He got kinda choked up at the part about his mother which ouch. Edred just had a lovely voice too which really shone through in this song.
The Reynolds Pamphlet: This song is EXPLOSIVE live. Chris was so thrilled and Edred was so defensive. Philip was so upset seeing the pamphlet. And oh god, when Angelica showed up Hamilton was so relieved but she yanked away so quickly and she genuinely seemed pained to do so. She was so so hurt and angry, she almost looked on the verge of tears because she had sacrificed so much for him and Eliza and he just threw it away. She almost spit out “god I hope you’re satisfied” into his face and raised a finger in his face, it looked like she could hit him. Rather than staying in his face like Renee did, Sabrina was so angry she left right away. And the dancing in the middle of the stage was definitely the funniest thing the king did.
Burn: UGHHHHH MY HEART. First of all, Julia’s voice is just beautiful on its own. But she really brought the emotion in this. She was so devastated and betrayed, and the fact that she played Eliza as so utterly in love with Hamilton before just really fucked me up. She barely choked out the “I’m” after the long pause. Her ending was super angry though but it was all anger coming from real sadness and hurt. After her final line, she did this little choked sob that just put the nail in my coffin of love for Eliza. This whole song I was just fully engrossed and probably had my mouth just hanging wide open.
Blow Us All Away: I whispered “oh no” to my dad at the beginning of this. Ruben’s Philip was so confident and idealistic and the father/son scene just made you want to scream at Hamilton. Little observation, Eacker’s cape is so swooshy and the actor was playing around with it so much. But yeah this Eacker seemed so much older than Ruben’s Philip and there was a definite power imbalance. Ruben seemed really nervous right before :( and oh god, when he shot on seven my heart just dropped to my stomach because WHY IS THIS HAPPENING. The whole theater gasped.
Stay Alive (Reprise): :(((( Edred’s Hamilton was so panicked and desperate. You could tell he really internalized it when Philip said “I did exactly what you said Pop” and was horrified that this was partially his fault. And Julia just ran out with tears already in her eyes and it was just over for me. She was so motherly and you could tell this was just her worst fear of something bad happening to her son. Ruben didn’t expressly play it like he was dying but he definitely seemed terrified and in pain and didn’t have the Musical Theatre Death Smile which thank god. You could hear a pin drop when the heartbeat stopped, and Julia did a version of the scream that was more like a sob but wow I was in pain. And she yanked that hand away from Hamilton so quickly. It was like she felt he didn’t deserve to mourn with her.
It’s Quiet Uptown: My god, what an intimate and beautiful piece of theatre. I cried which was a given. But really, between Hamilton, Angelica, Eliza, and the ensemble, the grief is so raw and powerful. There are some staging bits I never noticed before, like the ensemble kneeling and doing the sign of the cross during the lines about church. Edred was SO CHOKED UP during some lines. You could just feel how much regret he felt and how he realized how much he’s messed up everything. His delivery of “and you would smile, and that would be enough” was particularly gut wrenching. Sabrina’s voice was beautiful and so sympathetic in this song too which just added to all the poignancy. And then UGH. When Julia’s Eliza took his hand she was just so tired and relieved and devastated. Edred was audibly sobbing (so was I.) This scene is just the perfect encapsulation of the unconditional love Hamilton and Eliza had for each other and Edred and Julia’s performance was just so :(((
The Election of 1800: Chris Lee dramatically saying “Can we get back to politics?” and Chaundre Hall-Broomfield saying “Please?” through tears is really just the best way to get an audience full of crying people to laugh. Burr was SO FAKE during this song I loved it. His reactions to the voters was priceless, and when he greeted Hamilton with “Alexander!” he had such a fake ass smile and exclamation with his arms spread out for a hug; it was GOLDEN. Edred was so emphatic when he said “Burr has none” and Nicholas seemed so personally betrayed. And of course, the ending was flawless. Burr was trying so hard to go back into his cheery public persona but Jefferson just wanted nothing to do with him.
Your Obedient Servant: Burr was LIVID at the beginning of this song. Nicholas had such a great buildup to his anger. The back and forth between the two was just so good through the whole song and they hit the comedic bits right on. But the actual challenge part was very “shit’s about to go down.”
Best of Wives, Best of Women: They were such a good Hamliza pair :( so soft, so in love, so pure.
The World Was Wide Enough: Both Nicholas and Edred were just on their A-game for this song. It seemed like Nicholas, for the first half, was really trying to justify to the audience that he was doing the right thing and that Hamilton was a bad person who deserved this. His “this man will not make an orphan of my daughter” was heart wrenching. And props to Jennifer Geller for being a fantastic Bullet, especially in this song. Edred’s monologue was so mesmerizing; every word was delivered with purpose and you really got the vibe that he just wanted more time. And I truly think that “rise up, Eliza!” and then “my love, take your time; I’ll see you on the other side” is one of the most emotionally impactful moments in the whole show. My heart just stopped. My heart also stopped on the shot because woww ouch. You could instantly feel Burr’s regret and just overall thought of “what did I just do?” Angelica and Eliza looked so sad when they came out. The final bit, with Burr alone in the middle of the stage and Hamilton looking down on him from the balcony, and then the light going out on Hamilton is just genius direction. Nicholas had a really dramatic pause on “for Hamilton and.... me.”
Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story: The instrumentals of this song alone make me tear up. Sabrina was so fierce coming out for her part and I loved it. And then was Julia came out as Eliza I was just a mess. “I live another 50 years” was delivered particularly well. She was so frantic trying to ensure she had done everything, and then there was that moment of beautiful clarity with the orphanage. God bless Julia K. Harriman and God bless Eliza Hamilton. The ending with Hamilton and Eliza was absolutely breathtaking and the perfect final moment of their love, and Julia’s gasp was everything.
Edred Utomi as Hamilton: I will admit, I was a little bummed to be missing Austin Scott as I’ve heard great things about him. But I was so impressed by Edred! He had killer chemistry with Julia, Sabrina, Nicholas, Ruben, Chris, Carvens, Karli and basically everyone with whom he interacted. His singing and rapping voices were both equally good. I did prefer his Act 2 to his Act 1 though as I think he was more comfortable and really thrived in some of the more emotional numbers i.e. It’s Quiet Uptown in which he absolutely destroyed me. I really have no complaints, he did everything a great Hamilton needs to do and was such a nice guy at stage door. I hope he gets a lot more opportunities to go on in the future and maybe even a principal role in a company.
Julia K. Harriman as Eliza: I was so excited to see Julia as she was amazing in First Burn and the audios I’ve heard of her. Her journey as Eliza was so heartbreaking because she was genuinely so in love with Hamilton and was so betrayed and sad by the events of Act 2 :( she was a very good mix of an angry Eliza and a sad Eliza but she conveyed her  inner strength so well. I can’t even pick a favorite number for her because she wowed me in every song she sang. Plus, her voice is just out of this world and I would love to hear her do some recording in the future.
Nicholas Christopher as Burr: If you couldn’t tell from my review, his Burr was one of the best parts of the show. This role suits him perfectly and he was able really make you sympathize with Burr. It’s such a complex role to play and he did it with aplomb; he had a very distinct difference between Burr’s almost corny fake public persona and his inner ambition and drive. His final verse of Wait for It and his entire Room were religious experiences, plus he was so emotionally impactful in The World Was Wide Enough. I also loved that his Burr was so funny! Burr is usually not a comedic role but he had a much more subtle humor than the characters who are explicitly played for laughs and he had me cracking up. He had so many little moments of characterization that made the payoff in the end that much more worth it. He is now right up there with my all time favorite Burrs and I would kill to see him again.
Sabrina Sloan as Angelica: I knew of Sabrina before she was cast because of her run as Vanessa in ITH, and I was super excited as she was a Vanessa I really enjoyed. She so did not disappoint. I feel like the role of Angelica is being turned into a mostly “sassy” role and sassy can sometimes cross into bitchy or straight up unlikable, but Sabrina really made you feel all of Angelica’s emotions and that is exactly the kind of actress that my favorite character deserves. I obviously loved her in Satisfied because that song is the very thesis of Angelica as a character, but she was also so good in Reynolds Pamphlet and Take a Break. In the gran scheme of the play, Angelica does not get that much to do despite being one of the most well written and complex characters imo, but Sabrina forced you to be so invested in Angelica and feel her every feeling. I adored her.
Carvens Lissaint as Washington: Superb. For those of you who don’t know, Carvens used to tour as a poet before musical theatre and that honestly helped his performance so much. He knew exactly what words to emphasize to punch you right in the gut; his “not yet” was seriously so good how does one make two words so powerful. He has all the gravitas of CJack and has a very gospel-esque voice that he put to WORK in One Last Time. I was so thrilled to see him in this role and I can only wonder what his Burr and Laf/Jeff were like on Broadway.
Chris Lee as Lafayette/Jefferson: THE ACTUAL STAR OF THE SHOW. Listen I am a person who gets very annoyed by the emphasis of Jefferson as a character over the females and Burr in the fandom but god Chris Lee is a revelation I am so sad he is leaving but infinitely glad I was able to see him. Everything he did was so funny. In Act 1, if you looked in the background of any scene he was doing these little body roll dance moves and in Act 2 he just had this super jazzy and unbothered swagger when he walked which were both amazing. His singing is also super underrated as this is not a singing heavy part but he riffed all over the place in What’d I Miss and Story of Tonight. All of his little flourishes in the Cabinet Battles were just golden and he played so well off of Chaundre and Edred. Definitely my favorite Laf/Jeff so far.
Rubén J. Carbajal as Laurens/Philip: He has a man bun now! I enjoyed him more than I thought I would. I wasn’t particularly wowed by him in the bootleg but seeing him live was different. This role is really small but I think it can be one of the best parts of the show when really done well, and while I don’t think Ruben reached that level, he definitely didn’t fall into some of the tropes I really dislike for that character like the smiley death scene or the complete lack of chemistry between Laurens and Hamilton. (Seriously, the boy is 19 and dying I will never understand why some performers insist on making it seem like he’s all mature about it Philip should be TERRIFIED it irks me.)
Chaundre Hall-Broomfield as Mulligan/Madison: I thought he was awesome. His Mulligan was very brash and booming like Oak’s which I liked, and he went really hard during the Yorktown rap. His Madison was FANTASTIC against Chris’s Jefferson. He was such a sweet guy at the stage door too.
Karli Dinardo as Peggy/Maria: She was announced as an understudy right before the show started and she was good! She didn’t really wow me but it’s such a small part I was satisfied with what she did. I preferred her Maria to her Peggy because she was able to add some emotional nuance to the character. She has a really nice voice so that helped. It would have been cool to see Isa but I’m not disappointed, I thought Karli’s performance was super well done.
Peter Matthew Smith as King George III: Good! All King George’s blend together for me honestly but he was funny.
Ensemble: Every moment where the entire company sang together was heavenly and filled the theater so perfectly. The choreography of this whole show is just so great and they were all amazing dancers and added so much to every scene they were in. Appreciate ensemble 2kforever. Jennifer Geller was an excellent bullet and really drew your eye in every scene. Like I said before, Raven’s voice really stood out in some parts which I loved.
Stagedoor: It was kinda awkward because nobody really cheered or anything when the cast came out? But everyone was really nice. Julia, Chaundre, Karli, Edred, and Robbie Nicholson all came out and were super nice and took pictures. I was next to a little girl and they were all so sweet to her. Chaundre passed out flyers for their BCEFA event on Monday too which was cool. When Edred came out someone next to me said they cried and Edred was like “me too!” lol. But there was one girl next to me who was pushing and kept calling the male cast members “dad” and asking when Chris would come out which ugh. We left after Edred bc our ride was there and I think Chris came out after him bc I could hear cheering down the street rip.
If you’ve made it this far thanks for reading my rambles, I enjoyed it so much and couldn’t ask for a better first Hamilton cast! It went above my sky-high expectations and I cannot wait until I get another chance to see it, whenever in the future that may be.

At Ten Paces
“So, Burr, have the finger on the trigger?”
Hamilton, as usual, didn’t miss the opportunity to sneer and throw a waspish remark at me. As expected, he wasn’t serious at all, this duel meant merely nothing to him: he didn’t respect this historical moment – just like he didn’t respect me. He made fun of everything he saw – made fun of the situation, made fun of me, that eccentric that would certainly be dished on by newspapers!.. Unbearable, ridiculous! This man turns everything into a farce: once he takes the floor, any session morphs into a mess!
        “Almost pulling it.”
Hamilton grinned arrogantly – with the schadenfreude so characteristic of him that drives me crazy. Oh, if only I could, I would’ve shot him back then, I would’ve planted a bullet into his sarcastic dirty mouth which is always full of snide remarks! He’s always vaunting of his “service in battle”, but in reality it seems like this filthy little toad lay low somewhere in the tent scribbling his useless plans and botching up senseless essays! Instead of being active in politics he always dilates upon, the only thing he’s doing is writing which is not going to help us on the economic arena. This Caribbean bastard, supercilious parvenu God knows how ingratiated himself with Washington, managed to obtain his cushy job – and now he is not ashamed to use the fruits of his so called providence! What are his achievements exactly? A couple of Federalist articles for the Constitution nobody cares about? This mediocre project of the National Bank which isn’t accepted even by excruciatingly indifferent Jefferson? What’s his cultural impact? What’s his contribute to our country’s development? His constant squabbles in Congress – at any meeting in general? His permanent braggadocio, idiotic ostentation, swelled up conceit? Showing off in front of the delegates and haughty behavior? Voting for the man unable to make a strategically important decision, voting for someone preferring to procrastinate and postpone? The fact that his vote gravely changed the situation during the election of 1800 rose himself in his own eyes and ascribed non-existent accomplishments to him. Hamilton, enough. You can apologize – here and now – and stop marring this beautiful day with your insipid jokes popping out of your carelessly concocted pamphlets. But no, you want to take revenge for your own disrespect – again, posing, giving a performance, trying to prove what a perfect shooter you are. You’ll have to take responsibility for your words, for your exceedingly long tongue, for your everlasting attacks and accusations – and your hubris.
“Don’t hesitate, sir,” Hamilton drawled in a mocking manner, reluctantly preparing himself for the duel.
He looked around slowly – slightly narrowed his eyes, he glanced at the boats and the oars; took a gander at me – and, damn it, he obviously noticed I had soaked a bit!.. He muttered something about the fog – and the wonderful day that lay ahead; patted Pendleton on the shoulder, smiled… and started telling us about his plans for the evenings as if he expected to go home in one piece! As if there was not a gun loaded, there were not a second tensed; me, the one capable to determine his fate, did not exist for him!.. He idly adjusted his sleeves as if preening before a date; grabbed the weapon and glanced at the boats again. Hamilton didn’t look nervous at all – on the contrary, he seemed either to be participating in another passionate dispute, or preparing himself for another blow to inflict on the Republicans, especially on Jefferson who had been elected to run afoul of me.
“At ten paces?” he asked, adjusting a ginger strand at the temple. Hell, is he attending a party?
Fighting my annoyance, I nodded. Yes, he surprised me here as well – he baffled me with his outstanding impudence.
        “If you say so, Hamilton.”
“Good to know that at least now you hear me.”
I clenched my teeth: he simply couldn’t stay silent for a second! Moreover, the closer the moment of truth crawled, the calmer he became – he wasn’t in the least affected by the seriousness of my intentions! Is he that dumb to take everything for a joke, a cheap trick? The only thing he had to do was to issue an apology and admit the inferiority of his judgement – I’d easily relent! This bastard is always turning the world around into a penny-ante play, and unfortunately this duel wasn’t an exception to the rule. On the contrary: it had awakened the honed skills of a third-rate clown.
“It’s a pity you can’t shut up even on the brink of death.”
“On the brink of death? For god’s sake, Burr. I bet I’ll outlive you.”
And again, that brazen grin, this histrionic astonishment of a bad actor – he wouldn’t be accepted even at the wayside travelling show though he was accepted at the Congress abrim with the same prancing fools!.. No, I am not against the idea of reconciliation, I would forget about the affront, but Hamilton somewhat insists on violence. He vexes me even more so, pits himself against me! With every second he’s digging a deeper hole. I feel a growing urge to tell him that a couple of words could alter everything, even my intentions – he doesn’t even care what nonsense to talk, so if he added a few more lines to his stupid monologue of a great length, it wouldn’t play a significant part for him: a sentence more, a sentence less…
The seconds strained. At the beginning they thought the duel to be a silly caprice of two men with no death happening at the end (at any rate, Hamilton always managed to interject with a long tedious speech full of redundant details, or with a squib). And now they understood the shots were unavoidable. God knows, I didn’t want it to occur – someone had to watch the mouth instead of talking nonsense amplifying it with publications and pamphlets. If Mother Nature created people for a certain purpose, Hamilton had none – he was a startlingly garrulous experiment, ready to take chances. If others consider that to be elocution and talent, then I realize this lack of interest towards my modest person – to any person whatsoever, as this ruffled rooster outshines the most obtuse parrot chattering days on end. Hard to imagine how his family put up with him – I bet his wife and children elude him all the time.
“Check the gun: they say it misfires. You sure don’t want to be a poor shot to boot?”
Pendleton frowned – and Hamilton definitely saw it though didn’t pay any heed to this. Winked and smiled; no control over the situation. Is it possible he is not scared at all? Is it possible he… he intends to shoot? Is it possible he… wants to end it up this way?
        “Not worse than you are.”
        “We’ll see!”
Just imagine: that smirk, again! I can’t bear it any longer!
“Ten paces,” came a muffled voice. I cannot even make out to whom it belongs exactly. Dang it, he isn’t kidding. He really is going to kill me.
        “One…”
Everything is so foggy – it seems the haze covered the eyes as well. I am no longer certain what is going on.
        “Two.”
The second’s voice didn’t quiver – but dropped down a notch.
        “Three.”
Hamilton barely suppressed the desire to toss another wisecrack. He could hardly keep himself from saying something.
        “Four.”
Making a step, I stumble over wet grass.
        “Five...”
I can hear Hamilton’s steps behind my back. Slow, steady, made at the word of command.
        “Six.”
I falter again. For some obscure reason, I am nervous: maybe I should turn back?
        “Seven.”
He commences to sing a doltish funny song as if it is the right time to dally. Hamilton manages to ruin the most serious moment – we’re an inch from death!
        “Eight… Nine… Ten. Stop.”
We turn to each other. He shoots first – what have I done to disgruntle him so much that he wants to destroy me? Is he eager to be the most discussed politician of the time? Wasn’t it enough after that Reynolds’ Pamphlet read by the whole country?
“You know, Burr,” Hamilton smiled, aiming, “I am not a supporter or adherent to Draconian measures. But drastic times…”
He didn’t finish the sentence. Instead of listening to his monologue, I way too vividly saw his white finger placing on the trigger. I swear, nothing else seemed more natural to me: he knew how to use the gun; you’d think he was born with the weapon in hand; the way he held it, the way he…
        …shot the tree.
I hear the bullet piercing the air next to my ear; honestly, it was an inch away from me – and it got stuck in the trunk of a spreading willow now shaking its boughs.
        “…call for diplomacy, not violence.”
I gave a start. He stood opposite me, unusually collected, straightened up – and appeared taller than I remembered; I saw my own reflection in his violet eyes; I was sure there was no shot at all, and if I hadn’t been deafened by it, I wouldn’t have grabbed my own pistol so hastily, I wouldn’t have been so trigger-happy, I wouldn’t have…
“Burr… damn you. The wound is fatal. You aren’t as bad as I thought.”
Hamilton’s voice was muffled and cracked – but his lips were still grinning. Out of the corner of the eye I saw him falling – and the seconds running up to him. As for me… I stood there rooted to the spot, staring into space. Duels had seemed different to me… before I shot Alexander Hamilton, the first secretary of Treasure of the United States.

Falling Through Time: Book 2
Masterpost
Jamilton Series Masterpost
Basking in Firelight
Part Twenty-Five
Old Wounds
----
Warnings: Mentions of blood, questioning life, questioning death, questioning existence, basically a small mental breakdown. Cause we all know I can only go so long before fucking something up.
----
Several days passed since Hamilton got Jefferson those horses and though life was overall the happiest it could be, Hamilton's worry for Jefferson was increasing. He slipped back in time more and more often, talking about the politics of the eighteen hundreds. Sometimes he would look around and then ask Hamilton why he was here and not at the presidential mansion doing everything he could to prevent a future war with France or England, other times it'd be why he wasn't in France trying to secure a treaty so they would help America fight for their freedom from the British Crown. Sometimes he would act as though everything was normal until Hamilton pulled out his phone or cleaned one of his guns. Jefferson would take it from him and inspect it like he'd never seen it before, asking how the magazine worked to allow one to fire it without reloading every shot, or how the screen of the phone lit up and moved when touched.
He'd always snap back to himself after a second, sometimes Hamilton didn't even have to point it out, Jefferson would just hand it back to him silently and go pound his head against the wall, go for a walk, or just sigh and let Hamilton hold his head while he stared absently at the ceiling. Why this was such a problem for Jefferson and not Hamilton, he didn't know, at least until one night.
Jefferson woke up screaming, clutching at his chest, sweat drenching his body. Hamilton was instantly awake and trying to soothe him as he frantically looked around, trying to get his bearings. When he finally realized he was a Monticello and Hamilton was beside him, he finally started to relax, but his hand remained clutched to his chest.
"What is it, Thomas? What happened?" Hamilton asked after Jefferson seemed to have calmed down.
"You won't believe this," Jefferson said shakily, "You and I left Monticello and returned to New York where I became president. You came to visit me one night as a way of saying goodbye just in case you would die in an upcoming duel with Burr. Well, I found out, naturally, and followed you there, where I found you facing off with Burr. My chest was filled with dread and I just knew that if I didn't get you out of there, you would never return to Monticello with me to live out a happy life. So of course, I shouted, but you didn't hear me, I ran for you but I knew I wouldn't make it in time, so I settled of blocking the bullet's path instead. I had to protect you. A-and, I died. Alexander, I died. You never die in dreams, you always wake up, but I died. It felt so real. I'm glad it wasn't though," Jefferson said, entwining his hand with Hamilton's. "You're still with me. I'm still alive. We're still in Monticello. Let's not go back to New York, okay? Let's just stay here."
"Thomas,"
"Please, Alexander. I know you always have to be in the thick of things, but please, at least until after the election of 1800. Then we can go do whatever you want."
"Thomas-"
"How about we go travel Europe? All of it. We can visit Lafayette on our way through. He'd enjoy that. You know, he'd be the one person that didn't care that we're together. He'd be overjoyed."
"Thomas-"
"I bet he'd throw a party. You know what, nevermind. That's probably not a good idea. He wouldn't be able to keep his mouth shut about it."
"Thomas!" Hamilton said sternly, finally catching Jefferson's attention.
"What?" Jefferson asked, looking at him.
"You did die. Your dream was real."
"What? No, I didn't die, look at me, I'm right in front of you, beating heart, working lungs. Still alive."
"You died over two hundred years ago in a duel with Aaron Burr on the 11th of July in 1804."
"That's ridiculous, it's January, 1799." Hamilton let him think for a moment. Jefferson closed his eyes, "Shit." Hamilton rubbed his back. "Shit, I can't believe I keep doing this."
"Take your time-"
"No! Don't you see? It's getting worse. Every day it happens more and more often."
"It just takes time-"
"Alexander, listen to me. This is not normal. None of this is normal. I'm not supposed to be here, we're not supposed to be here. We died. Do you understand that? We died. Dead. Gone. No longer of this earth."
"But we are here, Thomas. Against all logic and reason, we are here."
"But why? Why are we here?"
Hamilton thought for a moment, "To fix the country."
"What right do we have to fix the country? We're dead! *The earth belongs to the living, not to the dead.*"
"Thomas, we are alive, you have to get that through your head. We are alive, we are affected by what happens in the world. We bleed, we cry, we feel pain, we laugh. If we get shot in the head, we die, if we get stabbed in the heart, we die. We can die because we're alive. We are living. Okay?"
"Okay," Jefferson replied, shoulders slumping, hands rubbing his face, "I think I need a walk."
"No."
"What?" Jefferson asked, pausing.
"I said no," Hamilton repeated, climbing out of bed and walking around to Jefferson.
"It's never been a problem before."
"It's never been this bad before," Hamilton responded, stopping in front of Jefferson, crossing his arms defiantly. His stance and posture told Jefferson he was serious and he wasn't going to move out of the way.
"Fine," Jefferson said, slightly irritated, but too exhausted to fight back. "What is it you'd rather me do?"
Hamilton took one of Jefferson's hands and held it to his bare chest, "Do you feel that?" Hamilton asked, trying not to wince when Jefferson's ice cold hands came into contact with his skin. Shit, they were cold.
"What exactly?"
"My heartbeat." Jefferson remained silent, his gaze lowered. "Look at me," Hamilton commanded, holding Jefferson hand to his chest still. Jefferson met his gaze. "Do you feel it?"
Jefferson watched Hamilton's stubborn eyes intently, admiring the how the deep brown looked black in this light, like Jefferson could get lost in them forever. In fact, he could. "Yes," he whispered.
Hamilton placed his own hand on Jefferson's bare chest. "I can feel yours too. You know what that means?" Jefferson waited. "It means that there's warm blood pumping through veins. Blood that quickens when we kiss, blood that bleeds when we're cut, blood that slows when we sleep. Blood that flows in our bodies. It keeps us alive. And as long as our hearts are pumping, we are alive. It doesn't matter why, it doesn't matter if we already lived, it doesn't matter if we already died. We are alive now and I'll be damned if we don't wring every second we can out of it. So now you and I are going to climb back into bed and we are going to hold each other close enough that we can feel each other's heartbeat. Got it?"
Jefferson smiled slightly, "Do I have a choice in the matter?"
"Would you rather sleep on the couch?"
Jefferson laughed and pressed a quick kiss to Hamilton's lips, "Thank you, darlin."
"Oh get into bed for fuck's sake."
