now that his story is over, I need to get this off my chest. absolutely hated all these dumb brocon jokes about choso because he was constantly worried about yuji after shibuya.

we saw the death paintings being in cold captivity for 150 years and the only thing that kept them all alive was the voices of each other.

and then, when they are finally free, choso, as the eldest, has to make the hard decision of joining the cursed spirits because he knows his brothers don’t look human enough and they’d have a hard time to fit in and live among them.

still, he has no problem of sending them off to their first mission, as he knows they’re strong and trusts their abilities until they are eventually killed - the one time he isn’t around, which he obviously blames himself for.

and then when he’s finally found the killer of his brothers and is about to avenge them, in a fucked up turn of events, he realizes that this stranger is in fact another brother of his and he thinks, yet again, that he failed to protect his siblings.

so when yuji somehow survives, and choso learns about all the hardships he had to endure living as a human without any remaining family around, he’s wrecked by guilt again for not finding him sooner.

it’s obvious why he’s so protective and doesn’t want to leave him out of sight again, because the last time he did, his siblings died.

we see him blame himself constantly for the pain kenjaku inflicted on them, because he thinks as the eldest it’s his duty to protect and lead the way for his brothers, even though he couldn’t possibly know of kenjaku’s plans and is just another victim of his who was traumatized and played with.

idk. it’s probably not that deep but he’s such a tragic character to me and the jokes don’t do him justice

Uncle Nanami loves to take Yuji out on walks, to museums, aquariums, zoos, movies, cafes, and restaurants. He'll also buy Yuji the latest gadgets, new clothes, and toys.

Meanwhile, there's Uncle Sukuna who takes Yuji to wrestling matches, martial arts classes, and race tracks. He'll drag Yuji to sports complexes and teach him how to fight, if not, he'll take him to a race track with him.

The first time Yuji got in trouble for fighting, Nanami was worried and asked why Yuji did it. After hearing that Yuji was defending Junpei from his bullied, Nanami let him off the hook after scolding him for a bit then took both Junpei and Yuji to eat ice cream.

Yuji got home that day with Sukuna sitting in their living room.

"Holy shit! What happened to your face?" Sukuna immediately asks, sounding a little too excited to see his nephew's bruised face. "Did you get into a fight? Who won? Don't tell me you got your ass kicked?"

"I won, of course," Yuji answers and flexes his muscles.

Sukuna stands from his seat and wraps his arms around Yuji's shoulder in a headlock. He ruffles Yuji's hair, proudly saying, "That's my boy. I would've whooped your ass if you had lost despite all the kickboxing we've been doing recently,"

Then there's Jin who thinks that it's good for Yuji to be raised by two polar opposite uncles so he gets to experience both worlds.

I made a post before where I briefly talked about how all the grown ups in yuji’s life might have accidentally cursed him with their last words (wasuke, nanami, higuruma) because they gave him some type of burden he didn’t ask for (helping others, not dying alone, continuing to fight/ complete what they didn’t finish etc.).

but choso’s last words are only words of blaming himself for not being enough, and also gratitude and love for yuji. he doesn’t ask yuji for anything, not to continue the fight, not to avenge him, not to be surrounded by a lot of people.

he just apologizes for leaving him alone again and thanks him for being his little brother. I think that’s what makes his death especially painful for me.
